Community assessment is the first step of the nursing process and provides a framework to gather information about a community. A community is defined as a group of people in a place over time who share common goals and characteristics. Critical components that define a community include the people, the place they inhabit, and the social interactions between members. When assessing a community, nurses consider subsystems like the physical environment, health services, education, economics, safety, and more. Systems theory and nursing frameworks guide the community assessment process.

- This would be a great place to encourage students to enjoy the first clinical. If students take the time to really look, listen, and palpate the pulse of the areas they are in their ability to assess will be enhanced and their insight will develop as their perspective begins to broaden.
