What is missile?
• Missile is a weapon or an object that is
thrown at a target.
• MAJOR COMPONENTS OF MISSILE
 WARHEAD
 GUIDANCE SYSTEM
 PROPULSION SYSTEM
 FINS
Types of missile
• There are two types of missiles:
• UNGUIDED OR BALLISTIC MISSILES
which moves freely to the target and
can’t be controlled after launching.
• GUIDED MISSILES which are guided
through remote controls e.g. Cruise
missile.
MISSILE CLASSIFICATION
• MODE
 Air to air
 Air to surface
 Surface to air
 Surface to surface
 Under sea to surface
• SPEED
 Subsonic
 Supersonic
 Hypersonic
WHAT IS BALLISTIC MISSILE?
• Ballistic missile is a missile that has
ballistic trajectory over most of its flight
path.
• Ballistic missiles can be launched from
ships and land based facilities.
• AGNI, DHANUSH, TRISHUL, PRITHVI are
some of the examples of indian ballistic
missiles.
WHAT IS CRUISE MISSILE?
• Cruise missile is basically a small
unmanned aircraft.
• They are also called as unmanned aerial
vehicles (UAV).
• Cruise missiles are designed to deliver a
large warhead over long distance with
high accuracy.
• Modern cruise missiles can travel at
supersonic or hypersonic speeds.
LAUNCHING OF CRUISE MISSILES
GUIDANCE SYSTEM
• Missile guidance refers to a variety of
methods of guiding a missile or a guided
bomb to its intended target.
TYPES OF GUIDANCE SYSTEM
GPS
SATELLITE NAVIGATION
TERRAIN CONTOUR MATCHING
PROPULSION SYSTEM
• Propulsion in missiles is achieved by jet engines.
• Jet engine is a reaction engine that discharges a fast
moving jet which generates thrust and propels the
missile.
• All the jet engines work on a TD cycle called brayton
cycle.
• Along with the brayton cycle, expansion of gases in
the nozzle is carried out in order to achieve the high
velocity of missiles.
WORKING OF MISSILE ENGINE
• Brayton cycle involves three process:
Air compression
Heat supplied in combustion chamber
Expansion of gases in turbine
• The use of turbine in the missile is to run the
compressor.
• The remaining pressure energy of the exhaust is
used to gain the high velocity for missiles by
expanding the exhaust in nozzle.
CONCLUSION
• Currently cruise missiles are among the
most expensive of single-use weapons,
up to several million dollars.
• If they are got in wrong hands, they will
cause lots of destruction of wide area,
money and men.
