3. What is Managerial
Communication?
• Managing is a process of working with and through other
people to accomplish certain tasks, usually within
organizations.
• Managerial communication is the process by which a
manager in an organization share ideas or information
with other managers or members of their team.
• Depending on how well it is done managerial
communication has a great impact on the staff morale,
achievement of company goals and organizational
culture.
4. Importance at the
workplace
• Communication is necessary for the exchange of ideas
amongst employees within the organization.
• Managerial communication is essential at the workplace
to achieve targets within the desired time frame.
• Managers must communicate with their team members
to understand and address the grievance and problems.
• Managerial communication also helps managers set
goals and targets for themselves and organization.
• Employees feel secure and develop a sense of
ownership towards organization.
5. Types of Managerial
Communication
• Interpersonal Communication- This occurs between two
or more members of staff. An example would be a
meeting between a manager and a team member to
conduct a performance review.
• Organizational Communication-Is the sharing of
information between the various levels of an
organization. For example, when a CEO holds a
conference call with his managers to communicate
strategic objectives.
6. Key Management Functions
• Planning:
is a thinking process.
o What has to be done to reach these objectives?
o How will these activities be carried out?
o Who will do them?
o When will these activities take place?
o Where will this work be done?
o How much of kind of recourses will be needed?
7. • Organizing:
involves arranging the work sequence and assigning
areas of responsibility and authority.
Assign these responsibilities to unit staff.
Ensure that all responsibilities and supporting authority is
assigned, that none is “uncovered” and that there is a
overlapping of responsibilities.
8. • Commanding and Coordinating:
summed up in the term leading, those actions that the
manager performs that enable the unit to achieve its objectives.
Indicating the direction in which subordinates must go.
Generating the energy(motivation).
Provided the necessary resources.
• Controlling:
ensures the manager and the work group are working
towards the selected objectives.
9. Necessity of Organizations and
Organizational failures
• Organizations permits us to accomplish things we cannot do
alone.
• Organizations emerges when people need to get something
done that they cannot do working alone. Organizations serve
people’s need to build and accomplish.
• Better communication makes the organization work better.
• While failures occur when,
too little communication takes place.
too much communication is attempted.

10. Misconception 1:
Communication is a fringe benefit:
• Some managers see it as a way to keep workers happy
or to boost their morale.
• This involves instructing, guiding, and motivating.
• Our effectiveness depends on our sensitivity to the
perceptions and expectations of those we manage, as
well as the degree of their involvement.
• Creating conditions in which the development of mutual,
two-way understanding can flourish.

• To view communication as just message sending is
inadequate.
• The point of both examples is that many factors affecting
communication – such as expectations, receptiveness to
questions, and a desire to express rapport and friendship
through good natured ribbing.
13. Alternative to Misconception 2:
• People are constantly communicating
• Communication success is determined by message
receiver.
• Communication occurs whenever someone attaches
meaning to something.
14. Misconception 3:
• Communication consultant Walter Wiseman has said;
“Whether management likes it or not, it must face
the fact that all actions, by all people, on all level, in all
functions of the organizations, constantly communicate;
that all actions create
impressions in employees
judged by each employee
from his frame of reference”
• We cannot always control when communication will
occur.
