Creation Stories In Singing Visions, And Marduk And Tiamat
Stories are used as tools for overcoming logical contradictions that cannot otherwise be
overcome. Ever since we have been kids we have annoyed are parents with the million dollar
question, what is that? to help solve our endless curiosity, or perhaps just to shut us up, we have
been told stories. Creation stories work the same way. In order to explain complex and elaborate
events, such as the creation of the world, we tell stories that act as guidelines as to how and why
these things came about. We see examples of powerful creation stories in Genesis, Erika Zetterlund
s Singing Visions, and Marduk and Tiamat. These stories become socially important because they
tell people their origins and can guide their present and future actions.... Show more content on

These stories are known as adaptive stories. We see a clear example of an adaptive story when
looking at Babylon in 586 BCE. During this time the wall of Jerusalem was breached and the
temple was destroyed. The Jewish culture was threatened of being altered by bloody creation
stories like Marduk and Tiamat. To keep their culture alive they would combat creation stories like
Marduk and Tiamat by telling the stories of Genesis. Stories like Genesis helped members of the
Jewish community adapt to the catastrophe that was going on around them. They were able to live
vicariously through positive stories and were able to ease the hardship that they were experiencing.
While reading Genesis you can imagine a Grandmother telling a young child the story of Noahs
Ark, as she points out to the horizon and explains how rainbows are the sign of the covenant that
[God has] established between [him] and all flesh that is on the earth . The Grandmother may
continue to explain how the very same rainbows that they see, are a constant reminder that God is
watching down from above. Stories like this are known as constitutive stories. These stories give
meaning to the world that we live in, and help explain things that would otherwise be left

Female Sexuality Within Charlotte Bronte s Jane Eyre
Charlotte BrontГ« s Jane Eyre sets a strong example of female sexuality in the Victorian era. The
title character confronts herself with her feelings for Mr. Rochester and her growing throughout
the novel. She eventually finds the courage to embrace herself as she is. Jane s independent
mind and nature contradict the grain of Victorian society. She defies historical notions of female
sexuality and Victorian codes and rules on sexuality. BrontГ« reimagines the Victorian notion of
marriage as she emphasizes Jane s education and female work. The Introduction of 1983 s The
Woman Question Vol. 2 states, Almost any public statement bearing on the Woman Question
whether an essay, a review, a novel, a poem, a lecture, a cartoon, or a painting was likely to
generate a chain of responses, and to be read as a response to prior statements in an ongoing public
discussion (Helsinger xi). This quote conveys the message of Victorian times and their grasp on
femininity. Many people, like Charlotte BrontГ«, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and John Stuart Mill,
disagreed with common conceptions and advocated for women s beliefs. Others, like those
belonging to the True Womanhood Cult, were motivated, less by chauvinism than by deep needs
and genuine concern (57). Self sacrifice and a submissive role were expected virtues of femininity.
Physicians and scientists also introduced a single minded approach to women s sexuality and
behavioral nature. One of the most important and adverse aspects

Why Homework Is Homework
There are many students who realize that it is important to get good grades. But those students
are also stressed, exhausted, and frustrated. How would you feel if you had to study for more
than three hours a day just to earn a good grade? If you re a student, you probably fall into the
category of those who do not have time to do things other than school. You may also feel as though
homeworkdoesn t actually do anything. Most students get so busy with activities outside of
school and just simply do not have time to do homework or study for a test for 5 hours. So ask
yourself, is all of this necessary? Or can all of this unnecessary stress be avoided?
Of course, nobody truly knows if homework is actually effective or not. It may be stressing
student out for no good reason. Many students said they often do homework they see as pointless
or mindless in order to keep their grades up. Homework should have a purpose and a benefit. It
should be designed to actually teach kids instead of stress them out. It would be one thing to have
as much homework that is assigned if students actually learned or benefited from it, but it doesn t
do anything besides worry them.
In addition, most kids do not have hardly any time to do anything other than school related things.
All because society tells them that they should keep up their ... Show more content on

have time to do other things because of homework, they don t believe that homework is actually
efficient, and just do not have time to do homework. The stress level for most teens is through
the roof nowadays and is 63% higher than what is was in the 1980 s and all of it might be
unnecessary. Is it wrong for kids today to not want to do their work or do they have a point? If you
were put in the same position as most students, you would think the excessive amount of homework

Chick-Fil-A Marketing Strategy
Chick fil A is one of the most recognizable fast food chains in America. Operating over 1,250
locations in 37 states and Washington, D.C., Chick fil A was founded in 1967 in an Atlanta,
Georgia shopping center. The company is widely known for their famous Eat Mor Chikin
advertising campaign which feature cows attempting to convince restaurant goers to switch to
eating more chicken, ideally at Chick fil A restaurants. This theme has also introduced different
marketing material such as clothing, merchandise, and calendars containing coupon offers. It has
even won a national silver EFFIE award for its creativity and effectiveness in advertising. These
advertisements have helped to drive Chick fil A in becoming a national brand. The company is a
unique in many. What sets it apart from its competition is the way it surpasses industry norms
through its balance between financial performance and ethical values.
One of the marketing strategies fostered by Chick fil A is that they shut down business on Sundays.
This corporate culture has been developed by its founder S. Truett Cathy s Christian background. He
believed this is a way to honor God by giving attention to things that are more important to business
(Perreault, Cannon McCarthy, 2015). Another strategy is corporate giving. Chick fil A s WinShape
Foundation was established to help shape winners (Perreault, et al., 2015). This foundation has
helped foster children and thousands of its employees. There are a few

Mental Health For All By Involving All
Mental illness is a broad spectrum of many diseases, from autism to depression and dementia. One
in four people suffer from mental illness, and more often than not, those affected with mental
illness are not treated. It is not an illness you can see or touch, but an illness in the mind, and
today s society does not see it as an issue worth discussing. Imagine if you suffered from a mental
illnessand were not able to receive the help you needed to have a good quality of life. In
developing countries, this is not just imagination, however but a harsh reality. They will statically
unhealthier and will live shorter lives compared to those who do not suffer from any form of
mental illness. ( Transcript of Mental healthfor all by involving all ) Dr. Vikram Patel, a Psychiatrist
and Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropic Medicine, has a plan to change all that.
Patel s idea is to train individuals in developing countries to be able to perform basic psychological
treatment to those affected in rural or developing areas.
To begin a way to get proper mental health care treatment to other areas, Patel has established a
plan of action to get that care to certain individuals by receiving it from people they trust, their
very own neighbors. This type of health care system has been around for centuries in different
ways. The Native Americans had the Medicine Man, and the Europeans had the mid wife. If a
person can be trained to help deliver the gift of

The 2016 Miss America Contest allowed fifty two women to compete for the honor of being
crowned as the most tantalizingly beautiful woman in America. However, unlike previous years this
pageant featured a contestant who exemplifies compassion and intelligence on and off of the stage
in addition to being physically stunning. She galvanized a social movement that brought awareness
to a profession within our nation that has been misinterpreted and underappreciated by the public

Factors Helping Children Learn Their Native Tongue Essay
Factors Helping Children Learn Their Native Tongue There are many factors as to how a child
may be able to learn their native tongue at a very young age. Each of these factors has advantages
and disadvantages in a child s learning to speak their native tongue and some are more effective
than others. This essay will discuss each of these factors and how important they are. Some of the
factors that will be included in this essay are the children imitating their parents, being taught by
their parents, interaction with adults and the child s ability to work out the rules of grammar. It has
been said that in their development of language, children begin to make sounds or say words by
imitating what... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although it is argued that a child is not exposed to enough language to merely imitate. Also it is
evident that children tend to over extend words and call more than one object the name of
another object, or over generalize words for example adding ed onto the end of words such as
falled . It has also been suggested that by careful teaching from the parent can be crucial within a
child s development. For example repetition from the parent towards the child, such as saying
Daddy can make a child s understanding of language develop quicker. But also this can by
changing the language that they use when around the child. This sort of babyish talk is often
called caretaker speech or parentese , but this use of babyish language would make it harder for
the child to create sentences. The subjects and topics should be of which the child can understand,
but if spoken in an adult manner the child would be able to make connections on how sentences are
put together. Although it has been said that there is always a gap between understanding and
meaning, where the child may imitate what they hear but not actually understand what they are
saying. Also the rules of grammar have been shown to be too complex for a child learning to
speak, as they would not have yet

Cinematic Conventions In Jane Campion s Bright Star
Jane Campion s Bright Star (2009) is a film critically acclaimed for its use of cinematic
conventions, winning an array of awards such as the 2010 Australian Film Industry awards for Best
Cinematography, Best Production Design and Best Costume Design. Campion utilises such
conventions as these to facilitate her exploration of the relationship between Bright Star s
characters, creating a filmthat, according to The Observer s Critic of the Year Philip French, is in a
different class.
Janet Patterson, costume designer for Bright Star, expertly utilises costume to illustrate costume to
display changes in relationships between characters throughout the three year timeframe this film

Fanny Brawne notably is presented initially in bright and youthful clothing that is similar to that of
her sister Toots. The opening scene of the film presents both Fanny and Toots dressed in near
matching white dresses, and both sisters wear bonnets upon their heads. Such presentation of the
Brawne sisters is indicative symbolically of the closeness in their relationship that stems
predominately from their shared youth and maturity. Patterson creates a contrast to this presentation
as eventually Fanny increasingly dresses similarly to her mother as she matures, finding herself
more akin to an adult than to Toots, who, lacking the experience of falling in love with a terminally
ill man such as Keats, retains more childlike qualities. Upon the near end of the film this costume
alteration is apparent, particularly within the scene where Mrs Brawne comforts her distraught
daughter after she hears the news of Keats death. Mother and daughter when they are drawn

Analysis Of Maus By Art Spiegelman
Does any human actually want to take responsibilities for the mistakes they made? Doesn t
every human want to feel bad for themselves when they make what the consider a mistake? Many
people were traumatized by a horrific event that they were forced into, while their friends and
family were all being killed and forced to work against their will for the Nazi s. While many
people were affected, not all of them were able to fully explain how hurt they were as it was
something that was not easy to talk about for them. In a graphic novel called Maus, the author Art
Spiegelman is trying to connect to his father and understand the hardships he went through during a
hard time called the Holocaust. The author starts to talk about the Holocaust with his father and
starts to learn how hard it was for his father, Vladek and his now deceased mother, Anja. His father
and mother fought to not go into the camps until the last second, doing anything possible to stay
away from them whether it meant lying or hiding with the rest of their family. When discussing
this with his father he wanted to be able to tell his father s story for him, as he was never able to
do it himself. Not only does Spiegelman just tell his story with words, he tells it with pictures
through a graphic novel, using unique techniques with the illustrations in order to explain how
broken humanrelationships were at this time period. Art Spiegelman represents humans as being
accustomed to animalistic behaviors as he

Vitamin D And Calcium.vitamin D Essay
Bone Health, Calcium and Vitamin D
My research of the vitamin or mineral will be based on vitamin D and Calcium.Vitamin D is a fat
soluble vitamin, which means it is stored in the body s fatty tissue, normally is obtained through
exposure to sunlight, which triggers vitamin D production in the skin is found naturally in very
few foods but in the United States, it is routinely added to milk and infant formula. Other right
food sources are egg yolks and some types of fish such as salmon and mackerel and is also
available in nutritional supplements. Vitamin D allows your body to absorb calcium which is
necessary for building strong, healthy bones, without enough vitamin D and calcium, bones may
not form properly in childhood and can lose mass, become weak, and break easily in adulthood.
Even if you obtain enough calcium in your diet, your body will not absorb it, if you don t secure
enough vitamin D.
You can load up on calcium from plenty of different kinds of food. For example, add some dairy
to your diet, such as milk, cheese, and yogurt. Or try veggies like broccoli, kale, and Chinese
cabbage. Some foods, like orange juice or cereal, are calcium fortified, which means the nutrient is
added in by the manufacturer before you buy it.
Bone is a living tissue that is constantly breaking down and being replaced. Throughout life, our
body balances the loss of bone with the creation of new bone. We reach our highest bone mass at
about age 30.

Analysis Of Money And Class In America By Lewis Lapham
In his book, Money and Class in America, Lewis Lapham states, The ardor of the American faith
in money easily surpasses the intensity achieved by other societies in other times and places. This
notion is the reoccurring theme in Lapham s book. America is so taken with the idea that without
money your achievements do not mean as much as they would if they came with a large sum of
cash. We as a society value money over more important qualities such as knowledge or integrity. If
you have wealthin America you are looked up too, you are respected. Lapham wrote seeing is

have extra money to splurge on a phone or a new jacket instead of the same holey jacket you ve
had for 5 years you re looked down on. You re branded as an outsider because you don t have
what everyone else has. Laphman states, As often as not it isn t the money itself that means
anything; it is the use of money as the currency of the soul. Lapham is saying that money isn t
the end objective for most people; it s the things they can buy with money that they want. In the
movie Clique, there were a group of very wealthy best friends that thought they were better then
everyone. As the movie went on you found out one of the friends was not as wealthy as the

The Use Of Slang And Its Significance On English Essay
Before getting into the abundance of slang and its significance on English, it is first best to
cover the four base words of the LGBTQ community and how they have transgressed over time.
Queer, lesbian, homosexual, and gay all share an importance to the beginnings of the more
modern usages. The origin of queer is unclear, but the Oxford English dictionary defines one of
its earliest meanings around 1513 as strange, odd, peculiar, eccentric . It wasn t until the 1900s
that it was used as an offensive term for homosexual people, with its original meaning still in
context. This changed in the 1990s when early conversations about queer theory were had by
social theorists Michel Foucault, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Judith Butler, and others. This brought
the word into a new light. Of course it still holds some of its derogatory meaning, but by using
this word to define a theory that discussed the idea that gender is major part of the necessary self
and in gay/lesbian studies it closely examines the socially constructed nature of identities and
sexual acts. This reading connects directly with what is happening at present, which is a
reclaiming of queer by people in the LGBTQ community to stand for both questioning and sexual
and gender minorities. In her article on equality, Lisa Duggan states, Queer people, particularly
queer people of color, began to reclaim queer in response to a perceived shift in the gay community
toward liberal conservatism, catalyzed by Andrew Sullivan s

College Is A Essential Tool For Life Essay
The research topic of the connection between students who are in college and the level of stress
they inquire financially and generally has had a huge impact on society. College is a very
essential tool for life. College is meant to learn and experience a variety of techniques to use in
your everyday life. On the other hand, college can become a very stressful place, whether it s
because of your financial status or in general. The increase in responsibilities after transitioning
from a young adolescent to an adult is a cause of stress. There are two different sources of stress,
external stress and internal stress. External stress is getting a bad grade on an assignments/test or
relationship problems. Internal stress are motivators that put high expectations on one s self to
accomplish or achieve something. Financial stress is worrying about how you are going to pay
for something and where you will get the money to pay for it. In academic communities financial
stress can cause low performance in school work. Also, stress can cause the low rate of attendance
in the academic communities. The amount of workload assignment wise and job wise can
significantly bring stress due to the balance between the two. A solution for financial stress and
general stress could be to make more scholarships and grants available to students, and find ways to
relieve stress. In the article Surviving Stress and Anxietyin College Beyond Cohen explains

Symbolism In A Christmas Carol
Life is filled with riches. Many people believe that to be wealthy means to have copious amounts
of money. There is a far grander meaning. One can be rich in a plethora of ways: friendship,
kindness, generosity, family, and happiness. In A Christmas Carol, a fantasy novel by Charles
Dickens and adapted into a play by Israel Horovitz, a misanthrope, Ebenezer Scroogelearns what it
truly means to be rich. One literary technique Dickens employs to convey his message is
symbolism. From Marley s chain of sins to the gnarled children who represent want and ignorance,

Tiny Tim is grateful enough that he is around his family, and does not take any money from his

Ghost of Christmas Present then reveals a shocking truth, [Present sees] a vacant seat...in the

blow, as Scrooge realizes that if this family does not get enough money, their disabled son will

souls, he knows that he would have to change his ways; because if Tiny Tim dies, he would be

The Importance Of Year-Round Schools

Summary Of The Evil Genius
There s a saying in ballet that says Put Swan Lake on the billboard, and they will come. This
certainly seemed the case tonight as the Bolshoi Ballet has kicked off its two week stay at the
Koch Theater with a week a Swan Lakes. Well ... I think many of the audience were shocked, to
say the least, that in the Bolshoi/Grigorovich version, there s no swan and no lake. In fact,
audience reaction was muted, and it made for some awkward moments when the audience was
dead silent and the dancers decided to come out for another bow. Grigorovich decided to make
the whole ballet a vision conjured up by the Evil Genius. The Evil Genius mirrors Siegfried in all
his dancing and actions, and swans appear from behind a curtain. In the third act a sextet of black
swans and Odile are also conjured up by the Evil Genius from behind this curtain. This robs the
ballet of any meaningful romantic connection between Odette and Siegfried. It s all a vision of the
Evil Genius, remember? And in the final act, there s no reconciliation or forgiveness between
Odette and Siegfried. The Evil Genius again whisks his swans behind the curtain. The end. Many
iconic moments are gone: Odette doesn t make the flying entrance. Instead, she s already behind the
curtain, and has to exit the stage before re entering. The entrance of the swans is also gone: they re
already onstage behind that stupid curtain, then a few minutes later they re enter with the familiar
flying arabesque sequence. This production

Review Of The War On Malaria
THE WAR ON MALARIA
JAYME SWANSON

ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY II
OCTOBER 19, 2014 The War on Malaria
About 3.3 billion people, that is about half of the world s population are at risk of contracting
malaria (figure 1). Every year there are 250 million cases of malaria, and nearly 1 million deaths.
That amounts to 2,732 deaths per day. Out of those million people that die every year, 800,000
of them are African children under the age of 5. To control malaria three actions need to be
taken: insecticides need to be used to decrease the vector population, people have to be educated
as to how to prevent the vector from reproducing, and anti malarial drugs need to be distributed.
To understand the vector and what the vector is, scientists had to first discover what the parasite
was and how it worked. It was not until the year 1880 that French Physician Charles Laveran
discovered that Malaria was caused by a protozoan in the genus Plasmodium (Malaria, 2013)
Figure 1: Malaria endemic areas around the world. Areas where malaria transmission occurs are in
red, places that are at risk and malaria transmission occurs infrequently are in yellow, and places in
grey is where there is no malaria present (Malaria, 2010).

Review Of Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep
Bryan Rosendo MHC 354 Composition and Style Prof. Russo Bullaro Thursday, December 1, 2016
Email: gjabr12@gmail.com What It Means to Be Human? Phillip K. Dick, American science
fiction writer, delivers a story that emphasizes that there really is no major difference between the
human and non human, or in this case, the android. The androids presented in the book serve as a
means of redefining what it means to be human. Humans have now entered this new age of
technology and with it, have attained the ability to push pre existing mental and physical
boundaries. Abstract: The boundaries of what it means to be human is constantly shifting. As we
enter the Posthuman age, the altered posthuman is becoming the new human. In Phillip K Dick s
novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? androids serve and live alongside humans in the post
war Earth. The indistinguishability of the new Nexus 6 model android and a human creates the
context for the question what does it mean to be human. This paper will analyze the connection
between the posthuman and the human. With rapid advancements in technology, the human
rapidly advances alongside it. This paper will also examine the novel s main portrayal of the two
opposing beings. To conclude, the paper will touch upon the differences that seem to separate the
two and whether or not there truly are any. The concept of Posthumansim blurs the line of the
human and non human. This idea is prevalent in the 1968 science fiction novel Do

communication is vital for success and living a normal life. If one lacks the ability to communicate,
it can be an extreme challenge to live a normal life. Males and females often communicate
differently and sometimes can communicate the same. Differences between gendercultures
influence the way that people of different genders communicate. These differences begin at
childhood (Boundless). They have different ways of reacting, different objectives, body language,
and different ways of communicating with one another. Later, you will discover how genders differ
when it comes to communication during social interaction, in the workplace, with a significant...

The first issue that will be discussed is the fact that women feel left out during conversations
(Evans). These conversations that women feel left out in are debates at work, regular conversations,
and decision making conversations. Women like to be invited into conversations because they feel
more accepted if someone else shows sympathy toward the female s opinion or view. Females tend
to keep quiet during debates between men because of the fact that they want to be invited in.
Many men don t feel the need to invite the female in because she isn t speaking and they feel as if
the female has nothing to say. It isn t hard to see the miscommunication in this situation. They both
are picking up false messages and are drawing logical conclusions based on the information that
they are given. I have experienced this in the work place myself. I work in at a male dominant
cement plant that contains very few females. Most of these females don t seem to fit in with the
rest of the guys when it comes to simple conversation and debate. The women tend to keep quiet
more than the men do. Another difference between genders at work is men think that women ask
too many questions (Evans). Some men think that these questions asked by women inhibit progress
and take too much time. Many women claim that asking questions is their best way to contribute.
They feel that it sparks an exchange of ideas and that it shows concern for others. The best way that
genders can team up and work

Describe The Activity Of Human Amylase
Amylase is an enzyme that is responsible for splitting up food that contain high quantities of
carbohydrates and starch into simple and smaller groups of sugar. Amylase can be found in plants,
humans, bacteria, fungi and other mammals.
Human amylase is an example of an organism that produces alpha amylase and can be found in the
pancreatic juice in the pancreas and the saliva in the mouth. Both the pancreatic juice and the saliva
play important roles in the digestive system. The amylase found in the pancreas breaks down starch
into maltose and the amylase found in the saliva breaks down starch into glucose. The activity of
human amylase is very sensitive to temperature and pH so it is very important to maintain the
optimum conditions for any

What Are The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Gas Turbine
A gas turbine by definition is an engine in the centre of a power plant producing electric current
[1]. It is also a rotary engine extracting energy from flow of combustion gas. Gas turbine is
responsible for the conversion of natural gas or any other liquid fuels into mechanical energy. This
energy can therefore be used to drive the generator to produce electrical energy[1 3]. Gas turbineis
made up of components as shown in Figure 1 below. Figure 1: Gas turbineshowing arrangements of

The Cause Of Nathaniel Bacon s Rebellion
Nathaniel Bacon and his men, comprised of indentured servants, black slaves, and frontiersmen, ran
through the streets of Jamestown, plundering the plantation homes of gentry and eventually
burning Jamestown to the ground. This group was a testament to the rebellious potential of the
plantation labor force, namely indentured servants. Plantation owners had grown wary of
indentured servants and due to the hard labor, few free workers were willing to work on
plantations, leaving no viable labor source for the gentry to generate wealth. Over time, as slaves
from Africa gradually replaced indentured servants, the upper class instituted discriminatory laws
prevent slaves from uprising. Thus, the upper class did not intentionally propagate prejudice... Show

Earlier in the century, the legal difference between a slave and a servant was unclear. But now
the law began to make sharp distinctions between the two largely on the basis of race... This
quote clearly shows a shift in the legal definition of a slave to specifically the black race, making
the black race synonymous with slavery and inferiority. Although unintentional on part of the
upper class, these laws enculturated racism into colonial life, creating a class rift between
whites and blacks. However, the incorporation of prejudice and racism developed only after the
slave trade was established. Racism was not a prevalent social norm before American slavery. It
was the potential combination of poor whites and blacks that caused the most fear. If there had
been the natural racial repugnance...control would have been easier. This quote shows the low bar
of prejudice in the early colonial times, as white and blacks had rebelled together. Additionally, in
the Old World, slavery was not a new concept, but it had never been applied solely to the black
population. Servants and poor whites were always at the bottom rung of the social ladder in
England; they were not naturally better than the black population. However, in the colonies,
servants and poor whites were unquestionably in a higher class than the black population, a position

Modern Technology And Its Impact On Society
Before modern technology, men would band together for the protection of their families. History
has proven people group together for survival, whether that be warmth, food, or protection. The
idea was that a group is stronger and more profitable than one person acting alone. Each tribe or
gathering of individuals working together is considered a society. A society is nothing more than a
group of people living together for a common purpose, or simply because it is more convenient.
But, if all societies were thriving entities, then we would not know the hardships that have repeated
throughout history, such as, poverty and famine. On the contrary, a society that works well is a
society that works for the well being of its individualmembers. A high functioning and successful
society is built on a foundation of trust and equality and enforced by a governing body. Trust in
people is merely a relationship of reliance and an intrinsic part of human nature. It is established
at the family level and expands outward as the child matures. Each being depends on their families
to provide as one depends on educators to teach. Furthermore, trust is necessary for institutions
such as schools, hospitals, businesses, and even the government to effectively operate. The
workforce expects their employers to give a cash able paycheck in return for their hard worked
hours; consumers give a business compensation on the basis of receiving a product or service in
return; and individuals put their

This is true: the committee investigating the event managed to expose the failure using extensive

2) The failure was caused by reusing a flawed component. This is true as well but, because of
physical characteristics of the Ariane 4, this flaw had never become apparent. There had been many

The American Dream In Nickel And Dimed By Barbara Ehrenreich
One new experience can bring a whole other dimension. Viewpoints on life change, knowledge is
gained through mistakes, and one may find themselves trapped in a maze like situation that they
need to find a way out of. However, making the best out of one s position through determination,
perseverance, and courage can slowly reverse the difficulty of handling it. Eventually, as strength is
regained from tough obstacles, the desire to obtain their dreams escalates even further, which aids
in working harder and striving to reach their goals. Barbara Ehrenreich, the author of Nickel and

wagejobs after the welfare reform affected their lifestyles. In the novel, Ehrenreich tests the limits of
living in poverty by accepting any scarce job that was offered, and provides insight that although it
was exhausting to balance her needs and her hectic work schedule, by diligently laboring, constantly
persisting in seeking the better, and voicing out the wrongs, it can eventually lead to the attainment
of the American Dream. Through the struggles of stabilizing two jobs at once while searching for a
temporary home, Ehrenreich displayed the frustration of sticking to her three guidelines in her
experiment: she cannot go hungry, be homeless, or ignore the skills she learned through her
education and past work experiences. She struggled to find jobs that provided more than minimum

Equal Outcomes vs. Equal Opportunities Essay
Equal Outcomes vs. Equal Opportunities
Description: If you take all the change out of your pocket and look at the tail side of each coin you
will find written in Latin the motto of the United States of America; e pluribus
Unum . It states : out of many, one . This statement suggests that there are many different cultures
that comprise our country, and all these cultures are as one. The United
States political system has enacted numerous policies in order to ensure the equality promised by
this motto among all the people of this Nation. Due to the discrimination that is sadly, still a part of

Equal Outcome policies have made sure that all races, creeds, and peoples with disabilities are
proportionally represented in the work place. This has sent a message to the minority that it is
possible to for their group to succeed in a given workforce, thus giving them motivation to strive
for the best and eventually eliminating the need for an equal outcome policy. With the
implementation of such equal outcome policies, in time the workplace will become a equal
opportunity for everyone. With the rise of equal outcome/equal opportunity policies, many
problems have risen, however, that present a detriment to egalitarianism. Equal opportunity
policies all too often go too far and focus more on equal outcome policies such as quotas. Quotas
are hiring based on the percentage of a certain minority in a community. For instance, if there are
two percent Asians, and ten percent Hispanics in an area, then a company will hire two percent
Asians, and ten percent Hispanics. This is unfavorable because if a company has a position open
and needs Asians to fulfill its quotas, they will pass over a more qualified white male to hire the
Asian and meet its requirement. Though equal outcomes strives to eliminate discrimination, it
forces employers to discriminate against a possibly more qualified individual in order to meet a
quota.

Tropical Cyclones and Climate Change
Tropical cyclones (TCs) are of the most extreme and dangerous weather phenomena on Earth. In
the United States, landfalling TCs account for an average of $10 billion damages annually
(Pielke et al. 2008). Hurricane Katrina (2005) alone caused $81 billion of damages and took more
than 1,800 lives away. In developing countries, TC landfalls can be extremely detrimental. For
example, Cyclone Nargis (2008) took more than 130,000 lives in Myanmer (Burma) . Due to the
catastrophic nature of TCs, substantial efforts have been devoted to short term predictions of TC
track and intensity in an effort to minimize the damages and casualties. In recent years, the

At intraseasonal (30 90 day) scale, the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO, Madden and Julian 1972)
has substantial impacts upon retional TC activities in multiple basins; Indian Oceans (Hall et al.
2001, Bessafi and Wheeler 2006), western North Pacific (e.g., Liebmann et al. 1994), eastern North
Pacific (e.g., Maloney and Hartmann 2000a), and Gulf of Mexico (Maloney and Hartmann 2000b).
Association of these modes of variabilities to TC activity has contributed to substantial increase of
understanding in long term variation of TC activities in different regions. It is also true that the
modulations of seasonal to interannual variations of TC activities by these modes of variability
complicate the separation of natural variabilities and climate change signal. Recent studies have
identified some emerging trends in regional TC activities. Using observed TC track data, Webster
et al. (2005) reported increasing trends in intense (Category 4+ in the Saffir Simpson Hurricane
Scale) TCs in all TC basins. North Atlantic TC activity over the past 30 years has particularly
attracted strong interest in part due to the availability of more reliable observed TC track data
(discussed later in the chapter) and the noted increasing trends both in frequency and intensity.
Increase of North Atlantic intense storms is reflected to the increasing trend of the overall
destructiveness of hurricanes, as measured by the

Both salicylic acid and methyl salicylate are phenols containing a hydroxyl group that reacts with
the metal ions of FeCl3 to produce a brightly coloured magenta complex. The crude aspirin sample
reacted with FeCl3 to produce a translucent purple solution. Salicylic acid was tested as well and
reacted with FeCl3 to produce a dark purple opaque solution. Thus it was determined that the crude
aspirin sample did contain unreacted salicylic acid/acetic acid. The crude sample of aspirin was
then purified using water to remove unreacted acetic acid and then a recrystallization method to
remove unreacted salicylic acid. The crude product was dissolved in a warm solvent (95%
ethanol) and then allowed to cool to room temperature. Due to the differences in solubility of
salicylic acid and aspirin this method allowed for the isolation of aspirin as it crystallized out of
solution. Of the 1.322 g of crude aspirin, 0.684 g were recovered after the solution underwent the
recrystallization process resulting in a percent recovered of 51.74%. The melting point was
determined for both the crude and purified aspirin samples. The crude aspirin sample produced a

Analysis of Over Door Carving from Shiite Mosque in India
The beautiful over door carving is from a Shiite mosque in India that was made during the 19th
century. The wood carving is of rich patterns of greenery and flowers with Islamic writing in the
bottom center of it. The medium used in this sculpture would be wood and paint.
This piece had religious meaning the writing in the sculpture meant In the name of God, most
beneficent and merciful. Oh, Allah. Oh, Mohammad. Oh, Ali. Oh, Fatima. Oh, Hassan. Oh,
Hussein. Help from God is near at hand. In the month of Ziquad. In the year of Hijri 1287.
Islamic art is always symbolic everything there has a meaning most of the time, in this sculpture
what I can see is that the flowers, date trees, and greenery could be symbolizes a paradise image
since the writing is saying that help from god is near at hand . So when you portray god

  • 2. Creation Stories In Singing Visions, And Marduk And Tiamat Stories are used as tools for overcoming logical contradictions that cannot otherwise be overcome. Ever since we have been kids we have annoyed are parents with the million dollar question, what is that? to help solve our endless curiosity, or perhaps just to shut us up, we have been told stories. Creation stories work the same way. In order to explain complex and elaborate events, such as the creation of the world, we tell stories that act as guidelines as to how and why these things came about. We see examples of powerful creation stories in Genesis, Erika Zetterlund s Singing Visions, and Marduk and Tiamat. These stories become socially important because they tell people their origins and can guide their present and future actions.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These stories are known as adaptive stories. We see a clear example of an adaptive story when looking at Babylon in 586 BCE. During this time the wall of Jerusalem was breached and the temple was destroyed. The Jewish culture was threatened of being altered by bloody creation stories like Marduk and Tiamat. To keep their culture alive they would combat creation stories like Marduk and Tiamat by telling the stories of Genesis. Stories like Genesis helped members of the Jewish community adapt to the catastrophe that was going on around them. They were able to live vicariously through positive stories and were able to ease the hardship that they were experiencing. While reading Genesis you can imagine a Grandmother telling a young child the story of Noahs Ark, as she points out to the horizon and explains how rainbows are the sign of the covenant that [God has] established between [him] and all flesh that is on the earth . The Grandmother may continue to explain how the very same rainbows that they see, are a constant reminder that God is watching down from above. Stories like this are known as constitutive stories. These stories give meaning to the world that we live in, and help explain things that would otherwise be left ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Female Sexuality Within Charlotte Bronte s Jane Eyre Charlotte BrontГ« s Jane Eyre sets a strong example of female sexuality in the Victorian era. The title character confronts herself with her feelings for Mr. Rochester and her growing throughout the novel. She eventually finds the courage to embrace herself as she is. Jane s independent mind and nature contradict the grain of Victorian society. She defies historical notions of female sexuality and Victorian codes and rules on sexuality. BrontГ« reimagines the Victorian notion of marriage as she emphasizes Jane s education and female work. The Introduction of 1983 s The Woman Question Vol. 2 states, Almost any public statement bearing on the Woman Question whether an essay, a review, a novel, a poem, a lecture, a cartoon, or a painting was likely to generate a chain of responses, and to be read as a response to prior statements in an ongoing public discussion (Helsinger xi). This quote conveys the message of Victorian times and their grasp on femininity. Many people, like Charlotte BrontГ«, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and John Stuart Mill, disagreed with common conceptions and advocated for women s beliefs. Others, like those belonging to the True Womanhood Cult, were motivated, less by chauvinism than by deep needs and genuine concern (57). Self sacrifice and a submissive role were expected virtues of femininity. Physicians and scientists also introduced a single minded approach to women s sexuality and behavioral nature. One of the most important and adverse aspects ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Why Homework Is Homework There are many students who realize that it is important to get good grades. But those students are also stressed, exhausted, and frustrated. How would you feel if you had to study for more than three hours a day just to earn a good grade? If you re a student, you probably fall into the category of those who do not have time to do things other than school. You may also feel as though homeworkdoesn t actually do anything. Most students get so busy with activities outside of school and just simply do not have time to do homework or study for a test for 5 hours. So ask yourself, is all of this necessary? Or can all of this unnecessary stress be avoided? Of course, nobody truly knows if homework is actually effective or not. It may be stressing student out for no good reason. Many students said they often do homework they see as pointless or mindless in order to keep their grades up. Homework should have a purpose and a benefit. It should be designed to actually teach kids instead of stress them out. It would be one thing to have as much homework that is assigned if students actually learned or benefited from it, but it doesn t do anything besides worry them. In addition, most kids do not have hardly any time to do anything other than school related things. All because society tells them that they should keep up their ... One in four people suffer from mental illness, and more often than not, those affected with mental illness are not treated. It is not an illness you can see or touch, but an illness in the mind, and today s society does not see it as an issue worth discussing. Imagine if you suffered from a mental illnessand were not able to receive the help you needed to have a good quality of life. In developing countries, this is not just imagination, however but a harsh reality. They will statically unhealthier and will live shorter lives compared to those who do not suffer from any form of mental illness. Factors Helping Children Learn Their Native Tongue Essay Factors Helping Children Learn Their Native Tongue There are many factors as to how a child may be able to learn their native tongue at a very young age. Each of these factors has advantages and disadvantages in a child s learning to speak their native tongue and some are more effective than others. This essay will discuss each of these factors and how important they are. Some of the factors that will be included in this essay are the children imitating their parents, being taught by their parents, interaction with adults and the child s ability to work out the rules of grammar. Although it is argued that a child is not exposed to enough language to merely imitate. Also it is evident that children tend to over extend words and call more than one object the name of another object, or over generalize words for example adding ed onto the end of words such as falled . It has also been suggested that by careful teaching from the parent can be crucial within a child s development. For example repetition from the parent towards the child, such as saying Daddy can make a child s understanding of language develop quicker. But also this can by changing the language that they use when around the child. This sort of babyish talk is often called caretaker speech or parentese , but this use of babyish language would make it harder for the child to create sentences. The subjects and topics should be of which the child can understand, but if spoken in an adult manner the child would be able to make connections on how sentences are put together. Although it has been said that there is always a gap between understanding and meaning, where the child may imitate what they hear but not actually understand what they are saying. The opening scene of the film presents both Fanny and Toots dressed in near matching white dresses, and both sisters wear bonnets upon their heads. Such presentation of the Brawne sisters is indicative symbolically of the closeness in their relationship that stems predominately from their shared youth and maturity. Patterson creates a contrast to this presentation as eventually Fanny increasingly dresses similarly to her mother as she matures, finding herself more akin to an adult than to Toots, who, lacking the experience of falling in love with a terminally ill man such as Keats, retains more childlike qualities. Doesn t every human want to feel bad for themselves when they make what the consider a mistake? Many people were traumatized by a horrific event that they were forced into, while their friends and family were all being killed and forced to work against their will for the Nazi s. While many people were affected, not all of them were able to fully explain how hurt they were as it was something that was not easy to talk about for them. In a graphic novel called Maus, the author Art Spiegelman is trying to connect to his father and understand the hardships he went through during a hard time called the Holocaust. The author starts to talk about the Holocaust with his father and starts to learn how hard it was for his father, Vladek and his now deceased mother, Anja. His father and mother fought to not go into the camps until the last second, doing anything possible to stay away from them whether it meant lying or hiding with the rest of their family. When discussing this with his father he wanted to be able to tell his father s story for him, as he was never able to do it himself. The Use Of Slang And Its Significance On English Essay Before getting into the abundance of slang and its significance on English, it is first best to cover the four base words of the LGBTQ community and how they have transgressed over time. Queer, lesbian, homosexual, and gay all share an importance to the beginnings of the more modern usages. The origin of queer is unclear, but the Oxford English dictionary defines one of its earliest meanings around 1513 as strange, odd, peculiar, eccentric . It wasn t until the 1900s that it was used as an offensive term for homosexual people, with its original meaning still in context. This changed in the 1990s when early conversations about queer theory were had by social theorists Michel Foucault, Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick, Judith Butler, and others. This brought the word into a new light. Of course it still holds some of its derogatory meaning, but by using this word to define a theory that discussed the idea that gender is major part of the necessary self and in gay/lesbian studies it closely examines the socially constructed nature of identities and sexual acts. This reading connects directly with what is happening at present, which is a reclaiming of queer by people in the LGBTQ community to stand for both questioning and sexual and gender minorities. I think many of the audience were shocked, to say the least, that in the Bolshoi/Grigorovich version, there s no swan and no lake. In fact, audience reaction was muted, and it made for some awkward moments when the audience was dead silent and the dancers decided to come out for another bow. Grigorovich decided to make the whole ballet a vision conjured up by the Evil Genius. The Evil Genius mirrors Siegfried in all his dancing and actions, and swans appear from behind a curtain. In the third act a sextet of black swans and Odile are also conjured up by the Evil Genius from behind this curtain. This robs the ballet of any meaningful romantic connection between Odette and Siegfried. It s all a vision of the Evil Genius, remember? And in the final act, there s no reconciliation or forgiveness between Odette and Siegfried. The Evil Genius again whisks his swans behind the curtain. The end. Many iconic moments are gone: Odette doesn t make the flying entrance. Instead, she s already behind the curtain, and has to exit the stage before re entering. SAMUEL ODEDOKUN ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY II OCTOBER 19, 2014 The War on Malaria About 3.3 billion people, that is about half of the world s population are at risk of contracting malaria (figure 1). Every year there are 250 million cases of malaria, and nearly 1 million deaths. That amounts to 2,732 deaths per day. Out of those million people that die every year, 800,000 of them are African children under the age of 5. To control malaria three actions need to be taken: insecticides need to be used to decrease the vector population, people have to be educated as to how to prevent the vector from reproducing, and anti malarial drugs need to be distributed. To understand the vector and what the vector is, scientists had to first discover what the parasite was and how it worked. It was not until the year 1880 that French Physician Charles Laveran discovered that Malaria was caused by a protozoan in the genus Plasmodium (Malaria, 2013) Figure 1: Malaria endemic areas around the world. • 29. Whistling Tree Frog Research Paper There is a deadly fungus called Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, Bd for short, that has been wiping out populations of frogs all across the world. Bd has caused dozens of extensions over the past four decades and leaving behind very few survivors. Also in the 1980s the frogs faced a similar problem with this chyrid fungusthat wiped out four frogspecies. However, there are two frogs, the whistling tree frogs and the alpine tree frog, that are doing better than scientists predicted. The whistling tree frog does not have as many infected or dead frogs as scientists expected. Researchers theorized that the frog has evolved slightly or those who were infected as juveniles survived and became immune. Their habitat is also play a role in their ... This is true: the committee investigating the event managed to expose the failure using extensive simulations. 2) The failure was caused by reusing a flawed component. This is true as well but, because of physical characteristics of the Ariane 4, this flaw had never become apparent. There had been many successful Ariane 4 flights, using essentially the same SRI subsystem. Apparently, reuse is not compositional: the successful use of a component in one environment is no guarantee for successful reuse of that component in another environment. 3) The failure was caused by a flaw ... A formal written test case is characterized by a known input and by an expected output, which is worked out before the test is executed. The known input should test a precondition and the expected output should test a post condition. In order to fully test that all the requirements of an application are met, there must be at least two test cases for each requirement: one positive test and one negative test. If a requirement has sub requirements, each sub requirement must have at least two test cases. Keeping track of the link between the requirement and the test is frequently done using a traceability matrix. Written test cases should include a description of the functionality to be tested, and the preparation required to ensure that the test can be conducted. Evaluation Of Norm Sample Evaluation of Norm Sample for KeyMath 3 DA The following evaluation presents the components of the normative sample applied in the KeyMath 3 Diagnostic Assessment (KeyMath 3 DA). For reference, a norm sample characterizes as a selected sample of test takers from various common characteristics such as gender, age, grade, race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or some combination thereof, for the purpose of creating test norms. The KeyMath 3 DA is a comprehensive, norm referenced measure of essential mathematical concepts and skill which is untimed and individually administered (Connolly, p. 1, 2007). Furthermore, the test consists of 372 full color test items and 10 subtests covering three general math areas: Basic Concepts (numeration, algebra, geometry, measurement, data analysis and probability), Operations (mental computation and estimation; addition and subtraction; and multiplication and division), and Applications (foundations of problem solving and applied problem solving). Additionally, data from the U.S. Bureau of the Census (2004) reinforced the integrity of the normative sample to establish the target counts in age, grade and season, race /ethnicity, geographic region and socioeconomic status. Ages/Grades of Students To accomplish an age norm sample, the KeyMath 3 DA tested students beginning from the ages of 4 years 6 months through 21 years 11 months. However, making the best out of one s position through determination, perseverance, and courage can slowly reverse the difficulty of handling it. Barbara Ehrenreich, the author of Nickel and Dimed, depicts the financial struggles of single mothers who raise their families through minimum wagejobs after the welfare reform affected their lifestyles. In the novel, Ehrenreich tests the limits of living in poverty by accepting any scarce job that was offered, and provides insight that although it was exhausting to balance her needs and her hectic work schedule, by diligently laboring, constantly persisting in seeking the better, and voicing out the wrongs, it can eventually lead to the attainment of the American Dream. Through the struggles of stabilizing two jobs at once while searching for a temporary home, Ehrenreich displayed the frustration of sticking to her three guidelines in her experiment: she cannot go hungry, be homeless, or ignore the skills she learned through her education and past work experiences. Equal Outcomes vs. Equal Opportunities Essay Equal Outcomes vs. Equal Opportunities Description: If you take all the change out of your pocket and look at the tail side of each coin you will find written in Latin the motto of the United States of America; e pluribus Unum . It states : out of many, one . This statement suggests that there are many different cultures that comprise our country, and all these cultures are as one. The United States political system has enacted numerous policies in order to ensure the equality promised by this motto among all the people of this Nation. Due to the discrimination that is sadly, still a part of this society, blacks, Indians (of both vernaculars), Hispanics, women, gays, and the disabled are sometimes denied the opportunity to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Equal Outcome policies have made sure that all races, creeds, and peoples with disabilities are proportionally represented in the work place. This has sent a message to the minority that it is possible to for their group to succeed in a given workforce, thus giving them motivation to strive for the best and eventually eliminating the need for an equal outcome policy. With the implementation of such equal outcome policies, in time the workplace will become a equal opportunity for everyone. With the rise of equal outcome/equal opportunity policies, many problems have risen, however, that present a detriment to egalitarianism. Equal opportunity policies all too often go too far and focus more on equal outcome policies such as quotas. Quotas are hiring based on the percentage of a certain minority in a community. For instance, if there are two percent Asians, and ten percent Hispanics in an area, then a company will hire two percent Asians, and ten percent Hispanics. This is unfavorable because if a company has a position open and needs Asians to fulfill its quotas, they will pass over a more qualified white male to hire the Asian and meet its requirement. Though equal outcomes strives to eliminate discrimination, it forces employers to discriminate against a possibly more qualified individual in order to meet a quota. • 37. Tropical Cyclones and Climate Change Tropical cyclones (TCs) are of the most extreme and dangerous weather phenomena on Earth. In the United States, landfalling TCs account for an average of $10 billion damages annually (Pielke et al. 2008). Hurricane Katrina (2005) alone caused $81 billion of damages and took more than 1,800 lives away. In developing countries, TC landfalls can be extremely detrimental. For example, Cyclone Nargis (2008) took more than 130,000 lives in Myanmer (Burma) . Due to the catastrophic nature of TCs, substantial efforts have been devoted to short term predictions of TC track and intensity in an effort to minimize the damages and casualties. At intraseasonal (30 90 day) scale, the Madden Julian Oscillation (MJO, Madden and Julian 1972) has substantial impacts upon retional TC activities in multiple basins; Indian Oceans (Hall et al. 2001, Bessafi and Wheeler 2006), western North Pacific (e.g., Liebmann et al. 1994), eastern North Pacific (e.g., Maloney and Hartmann 2000a), and Gulf of Mexico (Maloney and Hartmann 2000b). Association of these modes of variabilities to TC activity has contributed to substantial increase of understanding in long term variation of TC activities in different regions. It is also true that the modulations of seasonal to interannual variations of TC activities by these modes of variability complicate the separation of natural variabilities and climate change signal. Recent studies have identified some emerging trends in regional TC activities. Using observed TC track data, Webster et al. (2005) reported increasing trends in intense (Category 4+ in the Saffir Simpson Hurricane Scale) TCs in all TC basins. North Atlantic TC activity over the past 30 years has particularly attracted strong interest in part due to the availability of more reliable observed TC track data (discussed later in the chapter) and the noted increasing trends both in frequency and intensity. Synthesis Of Aspirin Lab Report Experiment 19: Synthesis of Aspirin and Oil of Wintergreen The purpose of this experiment was to employ techniques to synthesize aspirin and oil of wintergreen and to purify crude aspirin via recrystallization. Additionally, techniques were learned to determine the purity of the synthesized organic molecule of acetylsalicylic acid using a back titration method. The objectives of the experiment were achieved by synthesizing the organic molecules of acetylsalicylic acid (using salicylic acidand acetic anhydride), and methyl salicylate (using salicylic acid and methanol). FeCl3 was added to each synthesized product to test for the presence of a hydroxyl group ( OH). FeCl3 reacts with a hydroxyl group to form a brightly coloured magenta... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Both salicylic acid and methyl salicylate are phenols containing a hydroxyl group that reacts with the metal ions of FeCl3 to produce a brightly coloured magenta complex. The crude aspirin sample reacted with FeCl3 to produce a translucent purple solution. Salicylic acid was tested as well and reacted with FeCl3 to produce a dark purple opaque solution. Thus it was determined that the crude aspirin sample did contain unreacted salicylic acid/acetic acid. The crude sample of aspirin was then purified using water to remove unreacted acetic acid and then a recrystallization method to remove unreacted salicylic acid. The crude product was dissolved in a warm solvent (95% ethanol) and then allowed to cool to room temperature. Due to the differences in solubility of salicylic acid and aspirin this method allowed for the isolation of aspirin as it crystallized out of solution. Of the 1.322 g of crude aspirin, 0.684 g were recovered after the solution underwent the recrystallization process resulting in a percent recovered of 51.74%. The melting point was determined for both the crude and purified aspirin samples. The crude aspirin sample produced a melting range of 90Лљ 101Лљcelsius and the purified aspirin sample produced a melting of 117Лљ 132Лљcelsius. This was most likely because European countries had an abundance of land while Japan needed to expand and they were limited on their land due to the fact they were surrounded by ocean.
