2. Introduction
This method is created for the necessary for a change of the
GrammarTranslation Method. It is created in the 19th century and
associated with Francois Gouin and Charles Berlitz. The direct
method is sought to immerse the laerner in the same way as when
the first language is learnt. Since the GrammarTranslation method
was not very effective in preparing students to use target language
communicatively, the Direct Method become popular.
3. Definition
Direct Method is a technique of foreign
language teaching in which only the target
language is used. Direct Method meaning
is to be conveyed directly into the second
language through demonstration and
visual aids.
4. Principles of Direct Method
Translation
students are not allowed to use their mother tonge
language.
Grammar
grammar is taught inductively, the learner should figure
out the rule through the example by the teacher.
Conversation
Speaking is tought first before reading and writing. Student
should speak at least 80% of the time during the lesson.
Context/Situation
the teacher is actively involved in using the language in
realistic everyday situations. Students are introduced to the
ways of life of target language (L2).
Target language
students are encouraged to think in the target language.
5. strategies
Reading aloud
students take turns reading sections of a passage, a play, or a dialogue
out loud.
Self-correction
when a student make a mistake the teacher will offer him/her a
second chance by giving him/her a choice, or second to repeat the learner’s
mistake in order to signal that something was wrong.
Conversation practice
1. Teacher asks students a number of question in L2.The student should be
able to answer correctly in full sentences.
2. Fill in the blank
All the items are in the target language, no explicit grammar rules
would be applied. Students deduce the grammar rules throgh the items or
example given by the teacher.
3. Dictation
The teacher chooses a grade appropriate passage from a book and
reads the text aloud three times.
6. procedures
Each students has a reading passage in front of them.
The students are called on one by one and they read the text loudly
After the students finish reading the passage, they are asked in the target
language if they have questions.
The teacher answers the students’ questions in the target language.
The teacher works with the students on the pronunciation.
The teacher gives questions to the students and the questions and
statements are about the students in the classroom.
The students make up their own questions and statements and direct
them to other students in the classroom.
The teacher instruct the students to turn to an exercise in the lesson
which asks them to fill in the blanks.
The students read a sentence out loud and supply the missing word as
they are reading.
The teacher asks the students to take out their notebooks and he/she
gives them a dictation; the passage is about the topic that has been
discussed.
