A History of American Movies in Martin Scorsese’s A...
Martin Scorsese s A Personal Journey through American Film is a summary and analysis of the history
of American Movies. A legendary filmmaker in his own right, Scorsese highlights not only the hits but
also the lesser known but revolutionary titles. His analysis is clearly from a director s point of view,
which gives it an interesting and novel perspective. After a brief introduction, Scorsese highlights
what he calls the director s dilemma. A good director, he says, is able to balance his or her own vision
with that of the producers. This was far more significant in the past, as the director was beholden to
the producers. The best filmmakers were able to overcome this obstacle and produce great movies.
These days, directors are given significantly more artistic license, and producers do little more than
fund the idea and put the team together. The director is a storyteller first, claims Scorsese. He quotes
Raoul Walsh: If you haven t got the story, you haven t got anything. Documentary style films were
always a secondary to fiction. This has improved as the industry matured, but still holds true today.
For better or for worse, a Hollywood director is an entertainer. He is in the business of telling stories,
Scorsese tells us. He outlines the birth of the classic American genres, ones that moviegoers take for
granted today. Directors, producers, and fans alike love familiar tropes and genres. Similar themes
pervade all movies, recycled and reworked into new

The Glass Menagerie Pressure
The pressures of society in The Glass Menagerie push Laura Wingfield to be a shy girl who does not
have any contact with the outside world. Laura s biggest flaw, her slight limp, cause her to shut out the
world and become a hermit. Amanda, her mother, pushes her to go to college and find a man whom
will take care of her. However, Laura s insecurities kick in and she just about throws up during her
first speed test in college, which shows just how serious her situation is. Her personality shines
through her glass animals, whom she cares for with great tenderness. Laura has withdrawn from the
real world and gone into a make believe world which she creates from her set of glass menagerie.
Laura is a very shy, sensitive person who is very fragile. Society in The Glass Menagerie wants her to
go to business college, find a gentlemen caller, and not be so fragile. However, she has become so shy
and vulnerable that she has forgotten almost completely about the real responsibilities of life. When
Laura s high school crush, Jim O Connor, comes to Laura s house for dinner she escapes her make
believe world. Laura s make believe world is characterized by I haven t heard any arguments among
them! (Williams 122). Laura imagines her glass menagerie to be real which comes to show how ...

Personal Finance Lessons Learned
While taking the personal finance course this past spring, I learned many valuable lessons that will
greatly assist me throughout my life. One lesson I learned is the importance of paying yourself first.
To put this into action, I will save money in an emergency fund to have enough money to live
comfortably for 3 to 6 months, in case of emergency. Furthermore, this course has taught me the
importance of budgeting. Using budgeting, I will make a plan for my money, so I can avoid over
drafting and bouncing checks. Another lesson personal finance taught me is to pay all bills and loans
on time to develop a good FICO credit score, which is what companies use to evaluate the risk of
loaning to an individual. Knowing this information will help me ... Show more content on

By using a CD instead of a savings account, I will be able to make more money off of the award due
to CDs having higher interest rates since the money cannot be withdrawn until the end of the term.
This would not be problematic for me because if I were to receive the award, I would use the money
for college expenses to invest in my human capital, so I would not need it for two years. Going to
college will give me a financial advantage in the long run because according to what I learned in
personal finance, people with degrees tend to have higher paying jobs. Additionally, with this award
and scholarships, I might get through college debt free. This too would be extremely beneficial to my
financial situation throughout life because I would not have to worry about paying off student loans
and could instead invest in stocks or in my retirement funds. Furthermore, I love volunteering and
giving back to my community, so I also want to invest in nonprofit organizations to help others find
their way in life and allow them the opportunity to go to college, get a well paying job, and hopefully
continue the cycle of giving back. Therefore, the money from this award would benefit me for the rest
of my life along with the community I will invest

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Road Landslides
A KBS called XPENT (Faure et al, 1988; Faure et al, 1995; Mascarelli et al, 1992; Faure et al, 1991)
is a KBS used to assist in slope stability analysis. It diagnoses the type of landslide based on
information about the geology, vegetation, geomorphology and hydrogeology. It also advises methods
of stabilisation. SISYPHE (Asté, 1992) is a KBS used to analyse slope instabilities and is also used in
the diagnosis of hazard and landslides evaluation. This KBS has the ability to develop 3D models of
the ground surface as well as slip surfaces and piezometric surfaces.

Comparison Of Silent And Boomer Generations
With the advent of social media and unlimited access to the internet, many are contemplating why
Millennials seem to be more ignorant than other generations. Millennials seem to be more concerned
with status updates and keeping up with the Kardashians than with actual news. Older generations
wonder how this could have happened to a generation with so much capability to be informed.
Millennials are (or at least have the capability to be) more informed than previous generations,
because of instantly updating social media, access to more news, and advances in education. On the
other hand, others may feel as though newspapers and news radio stations are going the way of the
dodo. What served us so well for so long is not being lost to phone obsessed teenagers. Millennials are
the new generation. That needs to be accepted. Silent and Boomer generations older generations may

News apps, social media, and the internet allow teens to read and know more than just what was
included in the daily newspaper. According to Glenbard East journalism teacher Jeffrey Kargol, I
believe it s a lot easier to find the information because there are a lot more resources at our fingertips.
People can pretty much go online and get informed about something, while other generations couldn t
do that (Paragraph#8). Mr. Kargol explains that resources such as social media are more effective in
informing teens because news is unlimited. In former generations, people only had access to whatever
could fit into the day s newspaper. ... Many agree that the widespread use of technology is key in
keeping the Millennial generation informed of current affairs... (P#9) Technology allows people of this

The Failures Of The Public School System Essay
The Failures of the Public School System
All across the United States, there are schools that are struggling financially and culturally due to
different socio economic challenges. Some of these challenges cannot be avoided, although many of
them could be avoided. One of these problems that could be avoided is the act of institutionalized
separation of rich and poor. If integration was more focused the school systems in certain parts of a
city would not be understaffed and underfunded. In the documentary Waiting for Superman there were
many different points made by the filmmaker that in the modern Education system people are
believing that teachers are the only ones responsible for the success of their students. In the film states
that people should not wait for Superman to come to the rescue; look in the mirror. We need to
understand that it is not just the schools and teachers that are accountable for students performance .
This idea can be seen not only in the film, but in Sheryll Cashin s The Failures of Integration. A piece
of literature that discusses the modern education system and the organizations within them in the
United States. Waiting for Superman argues that the public school system in the United States is
failing due to poor performing teachers in schools. When The Failures of Integration argues that race
and socioeconomic impact is more important than the teachers in the failing schools. Schools in large
city centers are failing faster than schools in

The ultimate goal of ethical theory is to achieve human dignity, peace, happiness, and well being. But
these goals are somewhat vague and can be interpreted differently in different situations under certain
circumstances. So to make the things less complex, we try to define a sphere of freedom in which
people can act and make decisions freely without interference from others. So natural rights defines
ethical theory as a set of actions that respects fundamental rights of others, including the rights to life,
liberty, and property. Natural rights can be categorized in two different

The Constitutionality Of Capital Punishment
A major discussion and legal issue that has been the topic of major debates across the world is the
legality of Capital Punishment. Capital Punishment, also known as the death penalty, is defined as the
legally authorized killing of someone as a punishment for committing a crime (Oxford, n.d.). The
issue has been undecided by the federal government, which gives the states the right to determine their
own laws on the issue. Some states have outlawed the death penalty while others still use this practice
to this day. In the state of Maryland the death penalty was used for hundreds of years before it was
recently outlawed in a bill passed by the state legislature. The passing of the Capital Punishment
Repeal in the state of Maryland was a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Eighth Amendment, there is a section called the Cruel and Unusual Punishment Clause. This
states that the punishment for a crime can t be inhumane and it must be fitting to the crime. For
example, you can t put someone to death for stealing an apple. Because of this Amendment the death
penalty is heavily debated as a fitting and humane way of dealing with capital crimes.
Pro Capital Punishment People who support Capital punishment in the State of Maryland were not
happy about its repeal in 2013. Some delegates were not in favor of the repeal and voted against it.
Some of them believed that we should not completely abolish the death penalty because there are
extreme cases that could call for it. Delegate Smigiel said I have grave concerns about the state having
the power of life and death over other people, but there are circumstances where that s the only
penalty that s appropriate for a crime (Dresser, 2013). They believe that we should still keep it in place
for extreme situations such as the Boston Marathon Massacre, and the killing of correctional officers.
While the people who are advocates for the death penalty did not like the ruling, they had the
opportunity to sign petitions in order to stop the passing of the repeal bill. But they did not reach the
number of signatures needed to stop the bill. This shows that they did not have enough support to say
that they did not

Employee counseling in the workplace has gained distinction over the years and has become
increasingly important with the number of incidents related to stress related health issues ( ).
Furthermore, employee assistance programs (EAP) have become so popular that more than 60% of
large firms offer EAP services (Dessler, 2013). With corporations competing for success, excellence,
and the increasing intricacies of work, employees now experience enormous work life stress leading to
anxiety and depression. EAPs are programs intended to facilitate employee well being (Dessler, 2013).

Professional staffing is a necessity for the success of the EAP. Organizations should ensure EAP
personnel should be certified by professional or state licensing programs. Since 1970, EAPs have
experienced an expansion in certifications with the assistance from the Occupational Programs Branch
of National Institute on Alcohol and Alcoholism and the formation of the Association of Labor and
Management Consultants on Alcoholism (McCann, 2012). With the growth of EAPs, the
establishment of standards of professional practice and conduct was established under the Employee
Assistance Professional Association (EAPA) (McCann, 2012). Afterward, the Employee Assistance
Certification Commission (EACC) was created. The EACC established three critical skills required
for an individual to be certified; 1) Mastery of the requisite knowledge of employee assistance
principles, 2) Recognition of established professional standards of practice, and 3) Adherence to a
code of ethical conduct in the delivery of employee assistance services (McCann,

The Illusion of Racial Identity Essays
In common sense thought, race is simply a fact: humans are not all alike, there are whites, blacks and
yellows, maybe reds and browns too, and these different kinds are races, and that s just a feature of the
way the world is. However, recent work on the concept of race shows that race and race talk can be
understood by analogy to what Foucault suggests about psychiatry and mental illness coming into
being together: (1) it is now beginning to appear than race and racism came into existence together as
well. It is racism that has made talk of race something that we can take seriously. A statement

The distinction Heidegger proposed in Being and Time (4) between several senses of being became
the starting point of existential phenomenology, and the subsequent work of Sartre and deBeauvoir, on
which I will draw in a moment, derives important ideas from it.
Specifically, I want to distinguish between three meanings of being with respect to the meaning of
race , deriving from the discourse of existential phenomenology. With this distinction, I believe it is
possible to gain some insight into the problem of race and the question of truth.
Vorhandenheit and Existenz are Heidegger s words for a distinction between two senses of being ;
Vorhandenheit has come to be known in English as presence at hand , but substantiality is another way
to sum up its meaning. This refers to the kind of being that we attribute to, for instance, natural
phenomena. When we ask what is it? with regard to some natural phenomenon, we are expecting, and
will be satisfied with, an account of what the thing is composed of; this answer speaks of the object
not primarily in terms of its usefulness, its value, its relation to other things, but primarily in terms of
itself independently. In contrast, to name the kind of being that humans have, Heidegger uses the word
existence , and by it he means especially to call attention to the fact of care:

Imperialism In World History
Imperialism is a major part of world history. It has created borders, wars, and nations with its ideas
and actions but many people do not know what it was or how it shaped the modern world. It also
brought a darker side of humanity that crushed many lives and cultures. So what is imperialism, why
did it make people inhumane, and what is its impact on world history. The term of Imperialism is the
seizing of a weaker country by a stronger country. This means that strong countries like Britain,
France, and other european countries could set up colonies or controle native people to do their work
for them. The main drive for imperialism is that colonies create wealth for the mother country. Many
european countries needed raw materials for industrialization back in the mother country. Places like
Africa or India were taken and controlled to extract the raw materials from the area for cheap labor.
Another reason for the building of colonies was for strategic locations. Many ... Show more content on

The mother country and the people of that country were deemed superior to the people of the
controlled country. This was seen in places like india, where the British were at the top of the
hierarchy and Indians were the lower part of the hierarchy. The British took away aspects of their
religion, culture, teachings, and their hierarchy. When the Indians revolted they were shown no mercy
and many war atrocities were committed on both sides. The worst atrocities although, were in Africa.
Many of the people who were controlled in Africa became slaves and were forced to farm cash crops.
Resources were plentiful in Africa and it was a mad dash to control the most land in Africa. The Berlin
conference allowed many european countries to gain massive amounts of land and control it without
the rulers of the areas consent. The people were not deemed human and many times they were
considered demons. All of this led to the creation of the world that we

Deception In The Tragedy Of Hamlet

Hamlet deceives others through the need to get revenge for his father s death . Hamlet s deception and
need for revenge continues to cause him to question himself and his existence. In doing this, he is an
indecisive character . Hamlet is additionally deceiving his own friends and family, causing them to
feel the pain just so he avenge his father s honor. The meaning of the play as a whole is that deceit

Analysis Of Menagerie By John Williams
Looking at John Lahr s recent biography, he frames the history of Williams s life based on textual
readings of his plays. The notion that Williams s plays were heavily autobiographical is now a
generally accepted interpretation used to connect the disparate nature of his texts. As many
contemporary scholars do, Lahr reads Menagerie as biographical portraits of his mother and sister
when they lived in St. Louis, Streetcar drawing from his experience in New Orleans and his
tempestuous relationship with Pancho Rodriguez, Cat referencing Williams s uneasy relationship with
his father, and Suddenly Last Summer documenting both his experiences with therapy and his sister s

At the same time, it seems impossible to deny Menagerie was in some way based on Williams s life;
he drew from his experiences in St. Louis crafting Amanda after his mother Edwina and Laura after
his sister Rose. The use of his family members for models of this early work is undeniable. However,
the over emphasis of Williams s use of autobiography helps situate Menagerie as naturalistic because
Williams was drawing from real memories. While Williams was inspired by his personal life in some
regards, his contribution to literature was never a faithful reconstruction of his personal history.
Williams was inspired by his personal life in some regards, but his additions to literature were never a
faithful reconstruction of personal history. Williams s brother Dakin recalls his mother Edwina did not
recognize herself as Amanda when she saw Menagerie:
Edwina went backstage to congratulate Laurette on her performance. The actress was sitting with her
feet up on the radiator, keeping warm. To quote Edwina: Before I had a chance to get out a word, she
greeted me: How did you like you seff, Miz Williams? I was so shocked I didn t know what to say ...

we both like jonquils.

Examples Of Dystopia In The Maze Runner
If a society is somehow all content and happy with the way things are, then most modern day
problems would be solved. If there were some way to achieve this dream of a community, political
conflict would become a thing of the past. The desired goal is a utopian society. A utopia is a place or
stat gcxhe of order in which everything is perfect. The more that we fight for this dream, the more
apparent it becomes that such a society is impossible. When government tries to create a utopia, the
image of a perfect life could evolve. The result of this could be a dystopia. A dystopia is when the
opposite of a utopia is established when trying to create a utopia. In The Maze Runner, a group of
teenage boys are trapped in the center of one giant maze. An exemplary dystopian effect is given
within the book when one of the boys states: If you ain t scared, you ain t human (Dashner 9). The

They both centralize the power in one area and do not let the people have rights or a say in what is
going on. When a dystopia occurs, it is usually due to unequal distribution of power. When too much
power is put in the wrong hands, the society could spin out of control like a car on the highway. A
utopia is not realistic goal to have for any type of government. The best thing that a government can
do is to avoid becoming a dystopia. It all comes down to who has the power and what they are doing
with it. If the government has too much power, the people might rebel. The result would be a dystopia.
But if the people have too much power, there would not be enough order, also leading to a dystopia.
This scale needs to be balanced to where the government and the people have just the right amount of
power to keep the system in order. With so many flaws, the utopian dream could result in a dystopian

An understanding of addiction must remain broad: addiction as a possible consequence of the human
desire to alter consciousness; a chief public health concern for its dramatic negative impact on society
through the destructive behaviors of the addiction; a chronic, relapsing, biopsychosocial disorder that
cannot be understood apart from social context not simply as a brain disease (Hammer et al., 2013). It

As we discussed in class MI is all about arranging conversations so that people talk themselves into
change, based on their own values and beliefs. By giving the client s a safe place to do this we are
ensuring that they can work towards what they want. By being able to empathize, validate, and accept
these clients where they are at and take the time to see where they want to be we are helping them to
grow. Working collaboratively to evocate and be a partner on this journey is what makes this treatment
so important for those suffering from trauma and addiction issues. This does not mean that it will be
an easy task for instance when challenging discrepancies and facing client s resistance, but it will be
rewarding to help them get closer to where they want to be. By providing encouragement and praise
we are promoting a safe supportive place for self efficacy to foster. Once we are able to address,
normalize, and pass the ambivalence stage we are able to get to the real work by being a trusted

inner voice, did a seven day mental review, did the HURIER listening profile, and assessed how I

usually make flashcards to study, which really helps, but only for classes that have terms and
processes that lend themselves well to it. I also fill pages of notebooks with rewritten notes to help me
memorize them and my phone is full of random reminders. As stated in the textbook, Remembering is
essential if you intend to apply what you have heard in future situations (Brownell p 13). There is no
point in learning concepts if I cannot remember them to apply to future situations. For example, in

However, I cannot remember what was said or who said it. I also have a hard time remembering
conversations that I have had with my friends. Therefore, I would like to enhance my remembering

as well as responding skills. Responding is just as important as effective listening. The idea
surrounding responding is that Your partner makes judgements regarding the quality of your listening

The first reason is why attendance in class be mandatory because to learn new knowledge and
different subject. Students who study scientific they not necessary they take only scientific they can
take anything. For example, students who their major accounting they can take sociology or history to
know about new knowledge and they know more about the different between the subject. Also,

will take the end of class FA or F. Also, this grade is not good for you in the future when you want to

put the grade like a bonus for us. In conclusion, students should come to classes every day to know
about their subject and take a high degree. The degree with a high grade is a very good for their future.
I suggest students to come to their classes even to no be a problem with their parents. When the
students don t come to classes and take a FA or F their gpa will decrease and the collage will call their
parents about the students didn t come to classes, but their parents see the students go to college every

History Tommy Douglas also known as the father of Medicare introduced the existence of universal
health care in 1947. This care is set out to help improve health and standard of living making the
government responsible for setting rules for Canada health act. Along side with other organization
such as Canada Health Act, universal health still exists in Canada till date. Mary Wiktorowicz stated
there were oppositions such as Canadian Medical Association, tried to block the medical care act I
1957.(Raphael,Bryant,Rioux, 2006 p. 247). Despite the fact that universal health care system is meant
to make things better, the long waits, low budget and shortage of health workers are all the same
topics that trigger interests in the face of health maintenance. Issues Despite the accessibility
Canadians have to universal health, there are many causes of long waits, shortage of health workers
and low budget. Wait time has increased because of the lack of follow up; the government owns the
health care services so less supervision is assigned to services. According to Cbc report Canadians
wait longer in hospital emergency departments than people in other countries with publicly funded
health care systems (Cbc 2014). In relation to long wait times, shortage of health workers is another
big issue Canadians face.

Climate Justice in the United States
Climate change has been called the biggest problem of the 21st century by many scientists and
government officials alike. Many classes at the university level cover some aspect of this complex and
multifaceted problem. From the human rights that are at risk due to rising sea levels and food
shortages to the environmental, geographical, and intergenerational inequities resulting from
increasing greenhouse gas emissions; climate change is a serious and complex issue with little
agreement on how to solve it. In this paper, I will analyze the impacts of climate change in the country
that contributes most to the problem: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This may not sound like much, but when one considers that the global temperature during the last Ice
Age 7,000 years ago was only 5 or 6 degrees Celsius colder than it is today, then the numbers are
pretty frightening (Freese). Sea level rise is another area of concern for scientists and the global
community with respect to climate change. Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, the sea
level has risen about 8 in. and continues to rise about 0.14 in. per year (National Climate Association).
IPCC has predicted a sea level rise of 1m. (~3.3 ft.) by the end of this century (O Rourke), putting
small island nations such as the Maldives and at risk of losing their land, as well as cities in the US
such as Miami, New Orleans, and New York. Once again, this number may seem insignificant, but
when one considers that approximately 5 million people live within 4 ft. of the high tide areas in the
United States; and 1 in 10 persons live in low lying coastal areas around the globe, then the numbers
illustrate cause for great concern. An estimated 634 million people will be impacted by rising sea
levels (Greenfieldboyce) and 1 billion people could be displaced from their homes by 2050 as a result
of climate change (O Rourke).

Essay Comparison of Three First World War Poems
Comparison of Three First World War Poems
The three poems that I will be studying in this essay are Dulce Et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen,
Comrades: An Episode by Robert Nichols and Who s For The Game? by Jessie Pope. These poems are
about the First World War and two of them seem to have a negative attitude criticising and
downgrading the so called spectacular experience of the First World War. In Dulce Et Decorum Est
Wilfred Owen seems to mention good aspects of the War but compares them to low class tragic
events. In Comrades: An Episode Robert Nichols describes the event of a soldier being badly injured
and eventually dying. It describes what the corporals and soldiers did and how ... Show more content

In the second poem, Comrades: An Episode the same picture comes to mind by using different
techniques. The poem is written in the style of a story, which gives the writer more opportunity to
include descriptions and details. In this poem the narrator is the leader of a group of men and he
mentions names and, as he knows his men so well, he can create and describe vivid pictures of them,
such as Not to see them: Wilkinson, Stubby, Grim. Other ways he describes his men is by the speech
they use regularly. Who s For the Game? shows the thoughts that Jessie Pope has towards the war; she
views the war as very straight forward and simple; join the army, fight, win, then go home. There is
some reality points in the text even though they are understated, such as;
It won t be a picnic not much ,
and
Come back with a crutch .
This second quote is very misleading, Pope is saying that a crutch is the about the worst thing that
could happen when over a million Englishmen died fighting for their country. She uses metaphors in
her poem including the title of the poem. In the title Who s For The Game? was has been compared to
an enjoyable experience making the war seem less scary, and making people become more eager to
go.

Legal Case Brief
Jacobson vs. Nike Canada Inc.,
Instructor: Connie Carter
November 9th, 2014
Introduction
In the case of Jacobsen vs. Nike Canada Ltd, Mr. Jacobsen an employer of Nike Canada Ltd was
seriously injured in a car accident as a result of alcohol consumption while at work. This paper will
prove that the defendant (Nike Canada Ltd.) was negligent in all the four elements of Negligence and
therefore liable for the injuries. Also it will explain for any legal defense that the employer (Nike
Canada Ltd.) might be able to raise.

Was there a breach of standard of care?
Nike is obligated to provide a safe working environment particularly if the job is inherently
dangerous. The employer (Nike) must hire competent representatives. Nike s representative, supplied
the workers with considerable amounts of beer. Providing alcohol while at work jeopardizes work
safety and as a result breaches the duty of care that the employer is obligated to provide.
Causation?
It is very clear that alcohol consumption is the main cause of the accident. Applying the but for test we
can say: but for consuming the alcohol, the collision would not have occurred.
Damages?
Nike failed to exercise reasonable care and as a result Mr. Jacobsen was involved in a single vehicle
accident, which left him with physical damages (quadriplegic).
Counter Argument Assumption of Risk and Contributory Negligence
Nike could use assumption of risk and contributory negligence as part of their defense and show that
the plaintiff s negligence contributed to the accident. Although Nike provided alcohol in the work
place it could argue that Jacobsen was voluntary drinking and was aware of the danger arising from
driving intoxicated. Therefore, he knew the risk and voluntarily assumed the risk by engaging in the
behavior. Also Nike could claim that it does not owe a duty of care to Jacobsen because he was
released of his duties when he was driving.

Measuring The Distributional Characteristics Of L2 Input...
Given the two necessary conditions for measuring the distributional characteristics of L2 input stated
above, it becomes obvious that input variability differs fundamentally from the variability in a TL
construction (cf. section 2.3.2). The same conclusion can be drawn from the fact that non robust input
and the TL variable structure are proposed as two different, though closely related and interacting,
forces of interlanguage fossilization (Han, 2013) (see section 2.3.1). For simplicity, variability in a TL
construction will be referred to as construction variability in the remainder of this dissertation
proposal. To recapitulate, Han s (2014) conceptualization of the variability dimension of L2 input
robustness consists of the following levels: (a) one to one, or one TL form encoding one meaning; (b)
one to many, namely one TL form encoding multiple meanings across multiple contexts, or (c) within
the same context; and (d) many to one, or multiple TL forms encoding the same or a similar meaning
(see section 1.3). Though identical in terminology and entailment on the surface, construction
variability signifies (in)consistency in the form meaning function relations of the TL in the
prescriptive, categorical sense, and is generally stable in distribution. Input variability denotes a TL
construction s (in)consistency in the form meaning function mappings in discourse episodes that make
up the primary linguistic data immediately accessible to L2 learners. Whereas naturalistic

The Veldt And There Will Come Soft Rains By Ray Bradbury...
Technology Against Humanity Technology is a helpful tool that society has become accustomed to
using. However, the overuse of technology can lead to disaster. In The Veldt and There Will Come
Soft Rains , Ray Bradbury explores the power that technology holds through the use of futuristic
gadgets. Both stories contain smart homes that provide everything for the humans living in the house
and show the destruction caused by it. Through these technological advancements, the reader sees how
mankind is being defeated by its own creation in mental and physical ways. Bradbury uses the
superior technology of the smart home, the replacement of humans for the newest electronics, and the
dependence of technology on humans to explain that overindulgence of these modern appliances can
have drastic results. The smart home s advanced technology leads more to demise rather than
happiness. An example of this is in The Veldt when it is stated that, They walked down the hall of their
soundproofed Happylife Home, which had cost them thirty thousand dollars installed, this house
which clothed and fed and rocked them to sleep and played and sang and was good to them (3 4). The
house does everything for them, but it still cannot put Lydia at ease. It also makes its inhabitants feel
useless which does more to harm them than help them. Another instance of technology leading to
demise is in There Will Come Soft Rains when Bradbury states that, The house tries to save itself (11).
Technology has become so much like humans that it is performing human actions. Unfortunately, all
humans must die which is why technology must do it as well. Technology s death is also
foreshadowed in this passage which states, This was the one house left standing. At night the ruined
city gave off a radioactive glow which could be seen for miles ( Soft Rains 5). Technology has
outlived humans yet it cannot survive without them. When this computerization of a home tries to
survive on its own, it causes destruction. In short, when technology has no more humans left to serve,
its purpose is gone. Therefore all it has left to do is vanish. The humans in these stories also depend so
much on technology that they have been replaced by it. Technology s

Outline And Evaluate The Memory Process
Memory is the term given to the structures and processes involved in the storage and subsequent
retrieval of information. Memory is essential to all our lives. Without a memory of the past we cannot
operate in the present or think about the future. Memory is involved in processing vast amounts of
information. This information takes many different forms, e.g. images, sounds or meaning.
The multi store model (Atkinson, Shiffrin 1968) describes memory in terms of information flowing
through a system. Accordingly, it can be described as an information processing model with an input,
process and output. Information is detected by the sense organs and enters the sensory memory. If
attended to this information enters the short term memory. Information from the STM is then
transferred to the long term memory by rehearsal.
Miller s (1956) Magic number 7 (plus or minus two) provides evidence for the capacity of short term
memory. Most adults can store between 5 and 9 items in their short term memory. This idea was put
forward by Miller and he called it the magic number 7. He though that short term memory could hold

the sequence until the participant can no longer recall the given digits in order. Capacity refers to the
amount of information that can be held at any one time in memory. Jacobs found that the average span
for digits was 9.3 numbers and 7.3 for letters. The span increases with age because people learn how
to chunk the information given. This findings suggested that STM has a limited storage capacity of

He married the love of his life, Marie Raab, on November 12, 1961. They had one child together, my
mom. After my grandpa retired from the Air Force he worked at a paper making company in Sumter,
South Carolina. Instead of having flowers in the middle of the dining room table there would be a beer
bottle full of Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce. He would put that sauce on everything, he called it his magic
juice . My grandparents had a fig tree in their backyard that my grandpa would give a splash of his
magic juice to everyday because he said it gives the figs a little extra flavor when they are ripe. He
brewed his own beer out of a shed in his backyard. And in 2010 he was diagnosed with Parkinson s
Disease. I was only 12 years old when we first found out. My parents didn t really know how to tell
me because they thought I was too young and wouldn t be able to understand. They did not want to
scare me since I was so close with my grandpa. My grandpa was always the person I went to when I
was feeling down because he was always happy and had a joke for every situation. My brother and I
would visit every summer, for two weeks, and we would constantly go out and explore Columbia with
him. We would go to the pool, hiking, the park, even going to the grocery store was always an
adventure with him. There was never a dull moment when he was around, until we started seeing the
devastating

  • 2. A History of American Movies in Martin Scorsese’s A... Martin Scorsese s A Personal Journey through American Film is a summary and analysis of the history of American Movies. A legendary filmmaker in his own right, Scorsese highlights not only the hits but also the lesser known but revolutionary titles. His analysis is clearly from a director s point of view, which gives it an interesting and novel perspective. After a brief introduction, Scorsese highlights what he calls the director s dilemma. A good director, he says, is able to balance his or her own vision with that of the producers. This was far more significant in the past, as the director was beholden to the producers. The best filmmakers were able to overcome this obstacle and produce great movies. These days, directors are given significantly more artistic license, and producers do little more than fund the idea and put the team together. The director is a storyteller first, claims Scorsese. He quotes Raoul Walsh: If you haven t got the story, you haven t got anything. Documentary style films were always a secondary to fiction. This has improved as the industry matured, but still holds true today. For better or for worse, a Hollywood director is an entertainer. He is in the business of telling stories, Scorsese tells us. He outlines the birth of the classic American genres, ones that moviegoers take for granted today. Directors, producers, and fans alike love familiar tropes and genres. Similar themes pervade all movies, recycled and reworked into new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Glass Menagerie Pressure The pressures of society in The Glass Menagerie push Laura Wingfield to be a shy girl who does not have any contact with the outside world. Laura s biggest flaw, her slight limp, cause her to shut out the world and become a hermit. Amanda, her mother, pushes her to go to college and find a man whom will take care of her. However, Laura s insecurities kick in and she just about throws up during her first speed test in college, which shows just how serious her situation is. Her personality shines through her glass animals, whom she cares for with great tenderness. Laura has withdrawn from the real world and gone into a make believe world which she creates from her set of glass menagerie. Laura is a very shy, sensitive person who is very fragile. Society in The Glass Menagerie wants her to go to business college, find a gentlemen caller, and not be so fragile. However, she has become so shy and vulnerable that she has forgotten almost completely about the real responsibilities of life. When Laura s high school crush, Jim O Connor, comes to Laura s house for dinner she escapes her make believe world. Laura s make believe world is characterized by I haven t heard any arguments among them! (Williams 122). Laura imagines her glass menagerie to be real which comes to show how ... • 4. Personal Finance Lessons Learned While taking the personal finance course this past spring, I learned many valuable lessons that will greatly assist me throughout my life. One lesson I learned is the importance of paying yourself first. To put this into action, I will save money in an emergency fund to have enough money to live comfortably for 3 to 6 months, in case of emergency. Furthermore, this course has taught me the importance of budgeting. Using budgeting, I will make a plan for my money, so I can avoid over drafting and bouncing checks. Another lesson personal finance taught me is to pay all bills and loans on time to develop a good FICO credit score, which is what companies use to evaluate the risk of loaning to an individual. Knowing this information will help me ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By using a CD instead of a savings account, I will be able to make more money off of the award due to CDs having higher interest rates since the money cannot be withdrawn until the end of the term. This would not be problematic for me because if I were to receive the award, I would use the money for college expenses to invest in my human capital, so I would not need it for two years. Going to college will give me a financial advantage in the long run because according to what I learned in personal finance, people with degrees tend to have higher paying jobs. Additionally, with this award and scholarships, I might get through college debt free. This too would be extremely beneficial to my financial situation throughout life because I would not have to worry about paying off student loans and could instead invest in stocks or in my retirement funds. Furthermore, I love volunteering and giving back to my community, so I also want to invest in nonprofit organizations to help others find their way in life and allow them the opportunity to go to college, get a well paying job, and hopefully continue the cycle of giving back. Therefore, the money from this award would benefit me for the rest of my life along with the community I will invest ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Comparison Of Silent And Boomer Generations With the advent of social media and unlimited access to the internet, many are contemplating why Millennials seem to be more ignorant than other generations. Millennials seem to be more concerned with status updates and keeping up with the Kardashians than with actual news. Older generations wonder how this could have happened to a generation with so much capability to be informed. Millennials are (or at least have the capability to be) more informed than previous generations, because of instantly updating social media, access to more news, and advances in education. On the other hand, others may feel as though newspapers and news radio stations are going the way of the dodo. What served us so well for so long is not being lost to phone obsessed teenagers. People can pretty much go online and get informed about something, while other generations couldn t do that (Paragraph#8). Mr. Kargol explains that resources such as social media are more effective in informing teens because news is unlimited. • 7. The Failures Of The Public School System Essay The Failures of the Public School System All across the United States, there are schools that are struggling financially and culturally due to different socio economic challenges. Some of these challenges cannot be avoided, although many of them could be avoided. One of these problems that could be avoided is the act of institutionalized separation of rich and poor. If integration was more focused the school systems in certain parts of a city would not be understaffed and underfunded. In the documentary Waiting for Superman there were many different points made by the filmmaker that in the modern Education system people are believing that teachers are the only ones responsible for the success of their students. In the film states that people should not wait for Superman to come to the rescue; look in the mirror. We need to understand that it is not just the schools and teachers that are accountable for students performance . This idea can be seen not only in the film, but in Sheryll Cashin s The Failures of Integration. A piece of literature that discusses the modern education system and the organizations within them in the United States. Waiting for Superman argues that the public school system in the United States is failing due to poor performing teachers in schools. Capital Punishment, also known as the death penalty, is defined as the legally authorized killing of someone as a punishment for committing a crime (Oxford, n.d.). The issue has been undecided by the federal government, which gives the states the right to determine their own laws on the issue. Some states have outlawed the death penalty while others still use this practice to this day. In the Eighth Amendment, there is a section called the Cruel and Unusual Punishment Clause. This states that the punishment for a crime can t be inhumane and it must be fitting to the crime. For example, you can t put someone to death for stealing an apple. Because of this Amendment the death penalty is heavily debated as a fitting and humane way of dealing with capital crimes. Pro Capital Punishment People who support Capital punishment in the State of Maryland were not happy about its repeal in 2013. Some delegates were not in favor of the repeal and voted against it. Some of them believed that we should not completely abolish the death penalty because there are extreme cases that could call for it. Delegate Smigiel said I have grave concerns about the state having the power of life and death over other people, but there are circumstances where that s the only penalty that s appropriate for a crime (Dresser, 2013). They believe that we should still keep it in place for extreme situations such as the Boston Marathon Massacre, and the killing of correctional officers. While the people who are advocates for the death penalty did not like the ruling, they had the opportunity to sign petitions in order to stop the passing of the repeal bill. The Illusion of Racial Identity Essays In common sense thought, race is simply a fact: humans are not all alike, there are whites, blacks and yellows, maybe reds and browns too, and these different kinds are races, and that s just a feature of the way the world is. However, recent work on the concept of race shows that race and race talk can be understood by analogy to what Foucault suggests about psychiatry and mental illness coming into being together: (1) it is now beginning to appear than race and racism came into existence together as well. It is racism that has made talk of race something that we can take seriously. The distinction Heidegger proposed in Being and Time (4) between several senses of being became the starting point of existential phenomenology, and the subsequent work of Sartre and deBeauvoir, on which I will draw in a moment, derives important ideas from it. Specifically, I want to distinguish between three meanings of being with respect to the meaning of race , deriving from the discourse of existential phenomenology. With this distinction, I believe it is possible to gain some insight into the problem of race and the question of truth. Vorhandenheit and Existenz are Heidegger s words for a distinction between two senses of being ; Vorhandenheit has come to be known in English as presence at hand , but substantiality is another way to sum up its meaning. This refers to the kind of being that we attribute to, for instance, natural phenomena. When we ask what is it? with regard to some natural phenomenon, we are expecting, and will be satisfied with, an account of what the thing is composed of; this answer speaks of the object not primarily in terms of its usefulness, its value, its relation to other things, but primarily in terms of itself independently. In contrast, to name the kind of being that humans have, Heidegger uses the word existence , and by it he means especially to call attention to the fact of care: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It has created borders, wars, and nations with its ideas and actions but many people do not know what it was or how it shaped the modern world. It also brought a darker side of humanity that crushed many lives and cultures. So what is imperialism, why did it make people inhumane, and what is its impact on world history. The term of Imperialism is the seizing of a weaker country by a stronger country. This means that strong countries like Britain, France, and other european countries could set up colonies or controle native people to do their work for them. The main drive for imperialism is that colonies create wealth for the mother country. Many european countries needed raw materials for industrialization back in the mother country. The notion that Williams s plays were heavily autobiographical is now a generally accepted interpretation used to connect the disparate nature of his texts. As many contemporary scholars do, Lahr reads Menagerie as biographical portraits of his mother and sister when they lived in St. Louis, Streetcar drawing from his experience in New Orleans and his tempestuous relationship with Pancho Rodriguez, Cat referencing Williams s uneasy relationship with his father, and Suddenly Last Summer documenting both his experiences with therapy and his sister s lobotomy: Throughout his life, Williams, who was the most ... Counter Argument Assumption of Risk and Contributory Negligence Nike could use assumption of risk and contributory negligence as part of their defense and show that the plaintiff s negligence contributed to the accident. • 31. Measuring The Distributional Characteristics Of L2 Input... Given the two necessary conditions for measuring the distributional characteristics of L2 input stated above, it becomes obvious that input variability differs fundamentally from the variability in a TL construction (cf. section 2.3.2). The same conclusion can be drawn from the fact that non robust input and the TL variable structure are proposed as two different, though closely related and interacting, forces of interlanguage fossilization (Han, 2013) (see section 2.3.1). For simplicity, variability in a TL construction will be referred to as construction variability in the remainder of this dissertation proposal. To recapitulate, Han s (2014) conceptualization of the variability dimension of L2 input robustness consists of the following levels: (a) one to one, or one TL form encoding one meaning; (b) one to many, namely one TL form encoding multiple meanings across multiple contexts, or (c) within the same context; and (d) many to one, or multiple TL forms encoding the same or a similar meaning (see section 1.3). Though identical in terminology and entailment on the surface, construction variability signifies (in)consistency in the form meaning function relations of the TL in the prescriptive, categorical sense, and is generally stable in distribution. Input variability denotes a TL construction s (in)consistency in the form meaning function mappings in discourse episodes that make up the primary linguistic data immediately accessible to L2 learners. • 32. The Veldt And There Will Come Soft Rains By Ray Bradbury... Technology Against Humanity Technology is a helpful tool that society has become accustomed to using. However, the overuse of technology can lead to disaster. In The Veldt and There Will Come Soft Rains , Ray Bradbury explores the power that technology holds through the use of futuristic gadgets. Both stories contain smart homes that provide everything for the humans living in the house and show the destruction caused by it. Through these technological advancements, the reader sees how mankind is being defeated by its own creation in mental and physical ways. Bradbury uses the superior technology of the smart home, the replacement of humans for the newest electronics, and the dependence of technology on humans to explain that overindulgence of these modern appliances can have drastic results. The smart home s advanced technology leads more to demise rather than happiness. An example of this is in The Veldt when it is stated that, They walked down the hall of their soundproofed Happylife Home, which had cost them thirty thousand dollars installed, this house which clothed and fed and rocked them to sleep and played and sang and was good to them (3 4). The house does everything for them, but it still cannot put Lydia at ease. It also makes its inhabitants feel useless which does more to harm them than help them. Another instance of technology leading to demise is in There Will Come Soft Rains when Bradbury states that, The house tries to save itself (11). Technology has become so much like humans that it is performing human actions. Unfortunately, all humans must die which is why technology must do it as well. Technology s death is also foreshadowed in this passage which states, This was the one house left standing. At night the ruined city gave off a radioactive glow which could be seen for miles ( Soft Rains 5). Technology has outlived humans yet it cannot survive without them. When this computerization of a home tries to survive on its own, it causes destruction. In short, when technology has no more humans left to serve, its purpose is gone. Therefore all it has left to do is vanish. The humans in these stories also depend so much on technology that they have been replaced by it. Technology s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 34. The Quality Of A Person s Relationships With Their... This research is designed to answer the following question: Does the quality of a person s relationships with their parents and with their peers influence the extent to which that person engages in marijuana use? Data for this study come from the [seventh wave of the] National Youth Survey (NYS). The NYS is a nationally representative, longitudinal survey of 1,725 U.S. youth between the ages of 11 and 17 at the time of the first interview in early 1977. Respondents were interviewed annually through 1981 (Waves 1 5) and then again in 1984 (Wave 6) and 1987 (Wave 7). By the last wave of interviews, respondents were between the ages of 21 and 27 years (King South, 2011, p. 107). The variables used consisted of two independent variables, Perceived Disapproval by Parents Towards Deviance and Perceived Disapproval by Peers Towards Deviance, and the dependent variable of Marijuana Use. The variable Perceived Disapproval by Parents was operationalized by creating a composite variable from the following questions: PARENTS OPIN: CHEAT ON INCOME TAX (Y7_378), PARENTS OPIN: STOLEN WORTH $5 (Y7_379), PARENTS OPIN: SOLD HARD DRUGS (Y7_380), PARENTS OPIN: USED MARIJUANA (Y7_381), PARENTS OPIN: STOLE WORTH $50 (Y7_382), PARENTS OPIN: HIT SOMEONE (Y7_383), PARENTS OPIN: DESTROYED PROPERTY (Y7_385), PARENTS OPIN: BROKE INTO VEHICLE (Y7_386), PARENTS OPIN: DELIB HURT SP/PARTN (Y7_387) (National Youth Survey [United States]: Wave VII, 1987). • 37. Outline And Evaluate The Memory Process Memory is the term given to the structures and processes involved in the storage and subsequent retrieval of information. Memory is essential to all our lives. Without a memory of the past we cannot operate in the present or think about the future. Memory is involved in processing vast amounts of information. This information takes many different forms, e.g. images, sounds or meaning. The multi store model (Atkinson, Shiffrin 1968) describes memory in terms of information flowing through a system. Accordingly, it can be described as an information processing model with an input, process and output. Information is detected by the sense organs and enters the sensory memory. If attended to this information enters the short term memory. Information from the STM is then transferred to the long term memory by rehearsal. Miller s (1956) Magic number 7 (plus or minus two) provides evidence for the capacity of short term memory. Most adults can store between 5 and 9 items in their short term memory. This idea was put forward by Miller and he called it the magic number 7. He though that short term memory could hold 7 (plus or minus 2 items) because it only had a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He used memory span to measure how much can be stored in short term memory at any time. Jacobs presented his participants with random sequence of digits or letters and they were asked to repeat them back in the same order. They are first given 1 digit to repeat and the digit increases by one at a time to the sequence until the participant can no longer recall the given digits in order. Capacity refers to the amount of information that can be held at any one time in memory. Jacobs found that the average span for digits was 9.3 numbers and 7.3 for letters. The span increases with age because people learn how to chunk the information given. This findings suggested that STM has a limited storage capacity of between about 5 to 9 ... • 39. My Father, Lieutenant Colonel Wayne Raab Essay My Light My grandfather, Lieutenant Colonel Wayne Raab, served in the US Air Force for 27 years. He married the love of his life, Marie Raab, on November 12, 1961. They had one child together, my mom. After my grandpa retired from the Air Force he worked at a paper making company in Sumter, South Carolina. Instead of having flowers in the middle of the dining room table there would be a beer bottle full of Sriracha Hot Chili Sauce. He would put that sauce on everything, he called it his magic juice . My grandparents had a fig tree in their backyard that my grandpa would give a splash of his magic juice to everyday because he said it gives the figs a little extra flavor when they are ripe. He brewed his own beer out of a shed in his backyard. And in 2010 he was diagnosed with Parkinson s Disease. I was only 12 years old when we first found out. My parents didn t really know how to tell me because they thought I was too young and wouldn t be able to understand. They did not want to scare me since I was so close with my grandpa. My grandpa was always the person I went to when I was feeling down because he was always happy and had a joke for every situation. My brother and I would visit every summer, for two weeks, and we would constantly go out and explore Columbia with him. We would go to the pool, hiking, the park, even going to the grocery store was always an adventure with him.
