Fiber based product & structure used in the
first aid or clinical treatment of a
wound or medical condition.
Fibers used in Medical Textiles falls into two
groups:

 1.Collagen:This is obtained from cow skin.It
is a protein available either in hydrogel or
fiber form.Collagen fiber when use as suture
are equally strong as silk & biodegradable.
This is made from brown seaweed.This fiber
possess healing properties.These fibers are
non toxic,bio degradable & haemostatic.
 Chemical formula (C12H14CaO12)n
 Calcium β-D-mannopyranuronosyl-(1→4)-
 This is a polysachharide that is obtained from crab
& shrimp shell.
 It has excellent antithrombogenic characteristics.
 It can be absorbed by the body & promote
healing.Artificial skin made from chitin non woven
fabric stimulate new skin formation.
According to biological resistance:
1.Biodegradable:Fibers which are absorbed by the
body within 2-3 months time after Implantation
includes,cotton,viscose,rayon,polyamide,collagen
etc.
2.Non-biodegradable:Fibers that are absorbed by the
body slowly & take more than six months time to
degrade are considered as non bio degradable.For
example polypropylene, PTFE etc.

2. Implentable materials: Internal application
or replacement sugery.
3. Non implentation: External application of
the body
4. Extra-corporeal devices: Support the
function of the vital organs.

 Fibre optic sensor used in smart textile.There ability to sense
physical & chemical parameters can be accessed by embedding
several kinds of sensors.

Present day society is undergoing changes like large
population size,various situations and hazards of human
activity and civilization including transport accidents, chemical
materials, fire, cold, diseases, and sports. Such factors increase
the demand of medical textiles. So there are several researching
works are going on all over the world in medical textile
materials.
