Introduction:
Textile has always been a part of health care.
Combination of textile technology and medical sciences
has resulted into MEDICAL TEXTILES
Medical textiles are one of the faster growing sectors of
the global Technical Textile Industry.
Development of medical textiles can be considered as
one such development, which is really meant for
converting the painful days of patients into the
comfortable days.

Properties of Textile material for
Medical Application.
 Non toxic.
 Durability.
 Biocompatibility.
 Non allergic response.
 Non carcinogenic.
 The ability to be sterilized
 Strength, elasticity.
 Good resistance to alkali, acid and microbial.
 Air permeability and repellency.
 Absorption and good dimensional stability.

Classification of Medical textile fibre :
1.Commodity Fibre: 2.Speciality Fibre
Collagen
Calcium alginate
Chitin
Chitosan etc.
Primarily 2 types:
Natural &
Regenerated
• Cotton
• Silk
• Viscose
Synthetic fibre
• polyester
• polypropylene
• carbon etc
• PTFE (polytrafluoroethylene)
• polyamide
• glass fibre

Collagen: collagen is obtained from cow skin.It is a
protein available either in Hydrogel or fibre form. Collagen
fibre when used as suture are equally strong as silk and are
bidegradable.
Applications:
Contact lens
Artificial tissue
9
Calcium Alginate:
It is made from brown sea
weed.This fibre poses
healing properties againist
wound.
Applications:
Wound dressings are
made from this.
Chitin: This is a polysacharide
that is obtain from crab
and shrimp shell. It can be
absorbed by the body and
promote healing.
Application: Artificial skin made from
chitin non woven fabric
stimulate new skin formation.
10
Chitosan: It is obtained from chitin
treating with alkali. It can be spun
into filament and the strength of the
fibre is similar to viscose rayon.
Applications: It is being
developed for slow drug
release membrane.
11

Medical textile fibre according to
biodegradability:
Textile fibre
Non -biodegradableBiodegradable
12
Biodegradable:
Fibre which are absorbed
by the body within 2-3
months after implantation and
include cotton, Viscose ,rayon,
polyamide, polyamide,
collagen and alginate.
Non biodegradable:
Fibre that are absorbed
by the body slowly and
take more than six months time to
degrade are considered as
biodegradable .
e.g: Polyester, polypropylene, carbon.

Advantages of Textile material for
Medical Application:
Implementable material.
High specific surface.
Compatibility with biological tissue.
Possibility to combine different material.
Draping property.
Customized mechanical property.
Possibility to construct 2D and 3D structure.
Possible to produce micro and Nano structure.
Absorbency, softness, flexibility, bio stability, tenacity.
17
4
Some Recent Advances:
1.Development polylactic acid polyglycolic acid fibers as
structures for cell growth.
2.Temporary bio-resource-able textile supports for growing
human organic tissue.
3.Development of smart fibers (Polymers/proteins) for
treatment of wounds and Ulcers
18
4
Conclusion:
5th in the textile market size with respect to other twelve textile
application.
Medical textiles are one of the dynamically expanding sectors.
Maximum fabric structures of medical textiles are woven and
nonwoven.
Bangladesh imports medical textiles mainly from China and India.
Because of high initial investment required in R&D, there are
very few manufactures of Meditech products existing in
Bangladesh.
We need to take steps to produce Medical textiles to cope with the
global textile trend.
