A Cure for Ad-Fraud: Turning Fraud Detection into Fraud PreventionInMobi
The digital advertising ecosystem continues to be threatened by an ever-expanding and evolving web of ad fraud, leaving advertisers scrambling to scrutinize the authenticity of each impression and every subsequent user interaction. Fraud is destroying value and trust within the mobile advertising ecosystem with every passing day and, according to a recent study, it's estimated to cost advertisers $16.4 billion in 2017. While advertisers are the obvious victims, other players in the media supply chain such as agencies and networks are also greatly impacted. In order to truly eradicate fraud, advertisers, ad networks and attribution technologies must form a united front to turn ad fraud detection into ad fraud prevention.
This webinar will discuss the state of the art and latest advances in technology in the war against the invisible army of advertising fraudsters and explore strategies in which various industry stakeholders can work together towards stamping out ad fraud once and for all.
In this PPT you'll learn:
What are the incentives for mobile ad fraud?
What does fraud look like and how can it be detected?
How can the industry work together to eradicate ad fraud?

However, we need more technologies and techniques that focus on how to stop fraud before it happens. Having continuous, real-time data is important for this; but equally important are the policies and disclosures of the publishers and ad networks themselves.
Key Takeaways:
- The State of Digital Ad Fraud -- Terminology, landscape and trends
- The advertiser and publisher perspective -- Top issues and concerns
- Tools of the trade and best practices -- The different technologies and approaches to detecting and mitigating digital ad fraud
- Anatomy of a successful premium ad inventory program -- Whitepages’ guiding principles, policies and procedures

Trustworthy Accountability Group (TAG) - The Trustworthy Accountability Group was created to spur transformational improvement at scale across the digital advertising ecosystem, focusing on four core areas: eliminating fraudulent traffic, combating malware, fighting ad-supported Internet piracy to promote brand integrity, and promoting brand safety through greater transparency. For more information on TAG, please visit tagtoday.net.
The mission of the Anti-Fraud Working Group is to contribute to the healthiest possible ecosystem by improving trust, transparency, and accountability among all parties involved by developing the tools, standards, and technologies that enable the elimination of fraud.
Reduce your risk of exposure to traffic fraud and help the industry fight the bad actors by being more proactive in your operations.
• Educate yourself about traffic fraud, the risks that it poses to your business, and identify activities that can help you mitigate them.
• Practice safe sourcing. Only trust business partners who have earned trust. Implement technology to detect and prevent fraud. Filter traffic through vendors who specialize in fraud detection.
Set clear objectives for your media campaigns that focus on the measurement of real ROI, which is difficult for fraudsters to falsify. Measurements such as clickthrough-rate, completion rate, or last-touch abribution can be easily faked or gamed.
• Craft policies and procedures to eliminate low-level fraud, such as comparing impression volumes to audience sizes reported by third-party measurement services.

Online Traffic Fraud: Visits to publishers’ site(s) which occur without the knowledge of a user, or driven by non-human actors; Can be initiated by a person’s online actions, or fully controlled by a bot that has infected a personal computer
Make consumers install fraudlent toolbars in their brwosers and Fraudulent traffic-generating codes on their PCs
Consumer clicks on a link taking them to a compromised site or they`re tricked to download software
THE PC is infected unknowingly and turns into zombie or a node (узел, доп.сервер в сети) on a botnet
A botnet controller (froadster) hosts promotes “real unique users to your website”
A website owner or network needs to drive traffic and purchases impressions from fraudster not realizing it’s a botnet
The money flows into pocket of the fraudster
The fraudster starts sending bot traffic through the nodes in the botnet, driving fake impressions to the website
Ads are served on pages that are never seen by consumers, some even generate clicks from the bots
The website owners reporting shows that impressions have hit the site and clicks have accured, but they`ve actually all been generated by bots
https://www.sizmek.com/media/filer_public/eb/13/eb13ee88-972e-441a-a879-8e641609b4c2/casestudy_060514_fraud.pdf
Bots are small programs usually hosted in unsuspecting users computers that can perform various activities on the internet. Groups of bots hosted on many computers are called Botnets.
Ghost Sites The most widely reported type of fraud that currently takes place in online advertising is something referred to as Ghost Sites. These are real websites with real content,
Usually falsely produced or stolen from other legitimate websites. The sites’ only purpose is to defraud advertisers
Ad Stacking - Ad stacking is a practice where multiple ads are stacked on top of one another, with only the top ad visible to the viewer. While only one ad is visible, the impression counts for each served ad, even the hidden ads underneath the stack.
iFrame stuffing, also referred to as pixel stuffing, takes place when a 1x1 pixel (invisible to the human eye) is placed on a site, sometimes through an
ad unit. Unbeknownst to the user, these pixels can end up loading an entirely different website. The site that loads out of view in a 1x1 iFrame often contains advertising – none of which is ever seen by a user.
Allowing “bad actors” to profit from traffic fraud affects the en&re online adver&sing industry. In addi&on to dilu&ng inventory value and diver&ng payment from legi&mate businesses to fraudulent ones, traffic fraud also impacts the integrity of digital media.
https://www.tagtoday.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/TAG_Simplified_UnderstandingOnlineTrafficFraud-4-27.pdf
It is very easy to set up a website, put some ad space onto it and sell it via ad networks or ad exchanges. You can rent a botnet—millions of computers controlled by Trojans—for a handful of dollars and command them to visit your site and click onto the ads. All this is available to anyone with just a little criminal know-how of the dark alleys of the internet.
Then the buyers come. Very low CPMs, close to zero. Wow! High click-through rates. Great! They don’t care what they buy and from whom. And if they check out the websites, they look like legitimate content. So what to do?
https://www.tagtoday.net/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/TAG_Simplified_UnderstandingOnlineTrafficFraud-4-27.pdf
2 - Fraud complicates campaign performance analysis when human and non-human activity for ads and site visits are mixed in reports.
4 The supply of inventory is inflated artificially, reducing the value of legitimate publishers.
5 Failing to root out traffic fraud funds criminal activity and supports organized crime.
6 Fraud undermines industry self-regulation efforts, invites negative press about the industry, and potentially intervention by government regulators.
Allowing “bad actors” to profit from traffic fraud affects the en&re online adver&sing industry. In addi&on to dilu&ng inventory value and diver&ng payment from legi&mate businesses to fraudulent ones, traffic fraud also impacts the integrity of digital media.

There are risks when you leave your house. You lock the door, take a jacket and install a virus scanner on your PC.
But when I asked a panel of the leading ad-verification vendors at a recent I-COM conference what share of ads are bought with ad verification on, estimates were around 40%. That means 60% of ad buyers don’t lock their door, don’t take a jacket and don’t have a virus scanner on their computer.
That is reckless behaviour.
Well, let’s do the math: If you buy inventory for $1 CPM and have only 16.514% fraud, you lose $0.146 on each dollar you spend. So the ad-verification tool not only pays for itself, it saves money the moment you switch it on.
This evaluation provides an overview of the uses and current limitations of ad verification vendors/features, covering brand safety measures,
the practice of weeding out false impressions and other fraudulent activity,
and the emerging field of viewability measurement. It also considers the state of mobile and digital video ad verification.
We can argue about which tool you should use (and MediaCom can recommend a range of providers) but the truth is that even the worst tool
is better than not using one at all. It is similar to virus scanners—the best one does not give you 100% protection, but even the worst scanner
provides a comfortable level of protection.
So just do it. And don’t forget to take your jacket.
But you don’t need it. There is plenty of low-cost reach that you can buy from trustworthy publishers. Buy it directly through private marketplace deals and you’ll get the premium stuff, plus a discount if you are a good customer. MediaCom and GroupM have strong teams that do nothing but curate quality content, working with publishers to maximize the quality and negotiate great rates in exchange for spend volume to deliver on this opportunity.
Listen to your Mum: buy good quality at a good price in the trusted marketplace. Don’t buy in the dark alley.
Why is ad fraud so easy? One reason is that many advertisers evaluate their media buy on KPI that aren’t linked to business success but are just simple to measure. Impressions and clicks are easy to measure but they can also be generated by bots. Even viewable impression and completed video views are effortless to fake—it’s just the bot watching on a hijacked computer in a hidden window.
Evaluate your media on the value it delivers for your business outcomes. This will weed out any fraudulent low-quality inventory that may have escaped the ad-verification tools you use.
We know that quality and price usually correlate. And we know that you don’t always have to buy premium quality. If you have to feed your son’s entire football team with hamburgers, you may go for low-cost beef of decent quality. But if you want to put a perfect steak on the grill, you probably are willing to pay more.
The same applies to online ad impressions. You have to decide what’s important—the publisher’s brand, the context in which the ad appears or a high viewability rate.
Of course it can be 90%, if it’s a single-page website and user learns everything he wanted on the first page (for example info on the promo).
But, if you have a normal campaign, which all the time is on the same website where you would always have BR at 60-70%, the traffic of BR 90% should alert you.
Below are average benchmarks on BR in different channels.
IAB 50% 1 sec GroupM 65% 6 sec
53.4% the average viewability rate for banner placements
Ad injection is a technique by which ads are surreptitiously inserted in webpages without getting the permission of site owners or paying them. The practice takes multiple forms. In one, ads are inserted on top of those that already appear, making the original ads impossible to see (and hurting publishers’ viewability scores). Injected ads can also replace other ads entirely, or appear on pages that weren’t supposed to include ads at all.

And here is our standard for all platforms:
100% of HUMAN-viewable pixels….
For an Ad to be truly viewable it must be seen by a human (not a bot) so this means that, whilst fraud and viewability are different measurements, viewable impressions need to be fraud free too.
The good news is that all of our preferred technology vendors that we use for Viewability have fraud detection capabilities too.
For Premium Video (we will define this more precisely later) the definition is more robust:
