1. Elle Magazine
Elle translated in French means “she” as a magazine that
is specifically aimed at young women. Elle targets to the
young woman aged 16-30,interested in the latest
fashion and beauty trends. The magazine is published by
Filipacchi Hachette media U.S. inc. It is also responsible
for publishing Elle décor, Cycle word, Car and
Driver, Road and Track and Woman's day. Hachette
Filipacchi Media Us is the part of the larger Filipacchi
Hachette Medias, one of the words largest magazine
publishers. Elle Uk cost £3.80 per issue and being a
monthly publication there are 12 issues per year. Elle has
its own website Elle.uk.com.
3. Background
The background colour of
the magazine is made up
of yellow shades that
matches the detail on the
celebrity's dress. A lighter
tone is close around the
image acting as a shadow
attracting the audiences
attraction to the centre so
that they are drawn to look
at the main image. Elle
magazine focuses mainly
on fashion and beauty and
is mostly for young aged
woman to target a general
mass audience of women
as light colours are
associated with girls and
the magazine would
appeal to them.
4. Mast head
The mast head of the
magazine has been
stereotypically positioned
at the top of the font
cover so that it stands out
but also this is where the
audience know for the
mast head to be. The
typography of the mast
head is tall and skinny
which connotes the
desired figure for a
woman in the media. As
Elle is a very popular
magazine it doesn’t really
effect the letters hidden
by the celebrity. The style
is very smart and chic but
in the upper case to stand
out as black is readable
and a very prominent
colour connoting a
representation of
boldness and loud.
5. Main cover line
Here the main feature is
that is the main cover line of
the magazine has been
positioned on the right
corner below the mast
head. Sometime the main
cover line of the story is in
smaller fonts than other
coverlines.This is usually the
first article seen by the
readers therefore
considered as the most
important feauture.The
typography style of the main
feature must be the most
eye-catching and usually are
in capital letter “SELENA
GOMEZ”. The font is written
in black on yellow which
makes it very visible.
6. Main cover image
Here the cover girl image is being captioned in this substory which uses white typography against the yellow
background sharing the same colours as the dress worn
by Selene Gomez. The entire sub story here is in upper
case letters to show that it is important and the word
‘SELENA’' is in bigger letters than the other sub stories
on the page excluding the main feature. As the font is
white and so is her dress, however by the audiences
instant response to her face and her unique surname it
is acceptable to have this as we already know what it
will say.
7. Cover line
The typography is in a girly
handwriting which is appealing to
a female audience. The magazine
is fairly expensive compared to
other fashion magazines as its
target market of fashionable
women of a higher class would
be willing to pay this for the
luxury of the magazine .The word
'now' is a demand which is eye
catching to the reader as it is not
asking them or trying to persuade
them it is telling them what to do
and therefore the consequences
of this are that they feel they
have to buy it due to the
magazine telling them that they
must find out what is inside.
8. Buzz word
Most significantly
the word fashion
has been placed on
the cover of a
'fashion' magazine
and therefore its
target audience will
automatically be
attracted by this as
they know the
magazine will
include what they
want it too. Buzz
words are also
mentioned in
capital italic font
“253 Instant outfit
ideas” too attract
the audience
9. Cover line
The cover line is in
capital letters so that it
is eye catching to the
reader whilst the main
title of the article is in a
bold font as well as
being upper case. This
is so that the reader is
intrigued as to what
the title may mean as it
gives no clues until the
sub-heading of this is
read which is
positioned closely
beneath the title and
briefly explains the
story without giving it
away so the readers
feel they must find out.
10. Cover line
Another cover line
for vacation packing
written in capital
letters and “15 must
pack items” written
in bold letters. The
typography of the
sub-heading is in
lower case and is of
a slimmer font in
lower case which is
more feminine and
calm.
11. Date, Price and
Barcode
The date, price and
barcode of the magazine
has been placed beneath
the cover lines on the end
right side of the page
layout. The typography
style is still the same whilst
again the entire word is in
upper case to become
more distinctive to the
reader although the size of
the font is much smaller as
the price is not to be the
most eye catching piece on
the page so that it doesn't
put the reader off its
purchase.
