1. This is the front cover of a magazine called “Wired” which was released in June 1997. The font used for the masthead is interesting and unusual, and the fact that every other letter is reversed out makes it stand out dramatically. Each letter also has a subtle yellow outline, which contributes to make the masthead that much more prominent. The image is the logo company “apple” and is very striking as the company was (and still is) very successful, and to surround their famous logo with barbed wire and red spikes is a very controversial way to get people to buy the magazine. This is obviously a metaphor for the fact that apple were facing potential bankruptcy at this particular time. The word “Pray” at the bottom is written in apple style writing and is bold and black which emphasizes it very effectively; as almost all the rest of the writing in the magazine is extremely colorful and interesting.19050-595630

The masthead in this magazine has a slightly battered affect which fits the context and makes it more appealing to the target audience. The main image is of a well known musician, and this also contributes to the attraction of the magazine as a whole. There are subheadings all over the cover which use different aspects of language and imagery in order to draw attention; some examples of these are slang, exclamations marks, capitals, bold font etc. The background is quite plain which simply allows all attention/emphasis to be on the main image.Despite that the masthead in this magazine is quite dull and not particularly interesting; it still stands out as it is white- contrasting with the rest of the magazine- and in large letters. The background is quite a serene looking purple sky, which makes everything look calm and tranquil. This contrasts with the main image dramatically; as the image of a noose obviously has some very negative connotations associated with it. This all contributes to a very out of the ordinary front cover which is likely to attract many potential customers. This front cover is very simple; yet very effective. The question in the centre of the magazine has quite a strong message, and by putting in the centre in capitals it allows people immediately to be drawn to it. The image of a church in the water emphasizes, and almost even exaggerates the writing above its message. The masthead is bold and ends with an exclamation mark for stress. The coloring consists of kind of light orange and makes everything calm to contrast with what is happening in the image. 190505918311-400053468370939801018540
