The document discusses various film techniques used in the title sequence for the film Insomnia. These techniques include fade ins and outs to create mystery, extreme close ups of a blood stain to highlight its significance and convey a sense of the unknown, white backgrounds and muted colors to portray bleakness and isolation, and over the shoulder shots to question reality. Angles are also used to direct attention to important props like a newspaper providing clues to the mystery narrative. Fog is employed to further shroud the story in mystery and engage the imagination of what may exist beyond it. Overall, the techniques analyzed in the title sequence aim to establish themes of mystery and unsettle conventions through their symbolic meanings and technical applications.

2. EDITING- FADE IN FADE OUT;
• This creates mystery in the titles as it doesn’t give off much
• The white in this also shows bleakness
• Looks like an ink stain or blood stain, and to me that means something has gone
wrong, or wasn’t meant to happen
• This is also a techniqual code because it is adding effect to the film to make it seem
more
3. EXTREME CLOSE UP;
• The blood title shows the ‘fear of the unknown’ because we don’t actually know why
there is blood or what's going to happen.
• It is also highlighted more because its on a white back ground and this makes it
stand out more which to me makes it seem significant to the film
• This is also used in twilight where it is a ECU of how the blood in her body is
changing and we can see in detail what is happening which is a bit gorey
4. LOCATION;
• Once again it is using white which represents bleakness
• the only colours they use are black and white, also known as muted colours, which
makes it seem a sparse location or isolated which means the lad isn’t used by
humans
• The location can also trigger some questions to the conventions used because if
there is isolation and no humans in sight it could be a convention of existence as
you are questioning whether there is any
5. OVER THE SHOULDER SHOT;
• Gives a sense of mystery
• It also makes us question what is reality and what isn’t reality? Because of the
reflection in the mirror
• This is one of the conventions of psychothrillers because it is questioning reality by
using the techniqual codes of camera angles
6. EXTREME CLOSE UP;
• This shows his expression and characterisation
• Gives us a sense of panic or worry
• It also shows distortion because It is mainly close up on his eyes which seem to be
dazed in some sense
• It is also a symbolic code because we can read his emotions at the time
7. PROPS;
• The newspaper gives us an insight as to what the narrative may be
• Shows us some sort of investigation, which once again links to the theme of mystery
as we do not know what the case is but gives us hints and clues as to what the story
line may be about
8. ANGLE SHOT;
• The angle shot sometimes makes us focus our attention onto one main thing about
that prop, so maybe one word or the title of it in order for us to pay attention to it
• Can show the authority of one thing whether it is significant or insignificant
9. GOING INTO THE FOG;
• Once again it shows mystery because we have no ides what may be on the other
side of the fog
• This also gets us to use our minds and imaginations to think what may be after the
fog
