Our film is called diagnosis. We chose this name because we felt that it fit well with
the storyline of the film and genre. Our film is about an extremely dangerous and
contagious disease/illness that is spreading throughout the world, causing death and
havoc. When people hear the word diagnosis they think of something bad that has
happened medically, and this is exactly what is happening in our film. Our genres are
thriller , action and disaster. Our title goes well with our film because it already shows
that something bad will happen in the film and it is a word that will get the audience
thinking. The blood shows that there will be crime and espionage involved in the plot
and will get the audience excited.
2
We decided to locate our film in an isolated room. We decided to show this by
creating this poster and getting a close up shot of it in our opening scene. Our film is
not just about the disease, it is also about a character that is forced into isolation to
resolve the world crisis. We chose isolation because it suites with the mood and
genre of the film. It creates suspense and mystery as to why mason is in there, who
put him there, what he is trying to figure out etc. Isolation is a typical thing in
physiological thrillers because it suites well with physiologically unstable characters
which is what we are trying to do.
3
Because our film is aimed at young adults and teens ranging from 16-25 our
character is dressed casually and how a normal young adult would dress. We
wanted to do this so we can relate to our target audience and give a small
message to what teenagers can sometimes go through. This is not typical in a
physiological thriller, teenagers are not normally involved. Typically you will
have a man in his 30’s or 40’s as a main character. We also used props to portray
this message, as it is aimed to an age range where they are most likely in
education we used pens and paper to relate to how stressful working can be. We
use these props to show mason going almost crazy trying to solve and figure
something out, like a teenager or a uni student will try to solve a complicated
math's equation.
4
In physiological thrillers we found that close ups are very typical. This is because the
best way to show the physiology of a person is to show what the person is doing in
every detail, for example body movements, facial expressions, what they are wearing
etc. Similarly in the opening sequence of the physiological thriller movie insomnia, it is
full of close ups of the victims crime scene shots, extreme close ups of an old mans face
and hand movements etc. This is what we have tried to do in our film. In our opening
scene we have close up shots of my face twitching, foot movements, hands tapping on
the table, close ups of all the research that mason has done etc. In this particular
screenshot is mason looking up into the mirror as the camera slowly zooms in. His plain
abnormal facial expression gives a symbolic code that he is not physiologically stable.
5
We have done some editing to the film to suite the genre a bit more. For
example we decided to make the opening scene black and white. This
suites the isolation theme, as black and white are very plain colors it
adds to the mystery and the feeling of isolation.
6
We decided to draw our title using a fake needle injector and ketchup. The screenshot
was the outcome. There are a number of things we did for our title to allow it to fit
with the genre. Firstly the prop we used was the fake needle injector, this fits in with
the whole medical crisis that is going on in the story. Secondly we used the color red
to make it look like blood, and blood gives connotations of death and harm. Thirdly
we used a white board which also shows isolation and makes the blood stand out.
Lastly we used flashing lights to create suspense and mystery.
7
There were a couple of parts in the opening scene that set the story and gave clues to
what it was all about. The first part was mason getting pushing into the isolation room.
This shows that he was forcefully put in there by a powerful force. This will get the
audience wondering who that powerful force is. The Second most important part of the
opening story that gives away hints is mason doing all that paper work. This is showing
the audience he is trying to figure out something. The audience at this point will
probably be trying to figure out what he is doing. However when things progress there
is the biggest give away in our opening scene. That is when it shows all the research
that mason has done on the disease and news articles showing havoc and panic.
8
Our character is introduced as a helpless mentally unstable guy that is being forced to
do something he is finding extremely difficult to do. In the opening scene we have
close ups, over the shoulder and lots of different shots showing the characters facial
expressions. They are dull, plain and depressing facial expression. This portrays the
character to be very unhappy. The main things we did to ensure our character was
shown to be mentally unstable is to get him to behave abnormally. He rocked back and
forth, twitched, violently kicked a chair, was very sensitive to noises around him,
moved his head and body a lot etc. These were the clues we gave to our audience to
show what type of person the main character is.
9
In this shot I throw I piece of paper on the floor out of anger and stress. As the paper
floated down very nicely we decided to create a special affect out of it to make the
scene more dramatic. We made this part slow motion to give the audience time to
think for a bit what is going on. As our transitions are very fast the audience does not
have time to think into things. Here it gives that little bit of time for the audience to
think about what type of person he is.

Our film is not just about the disease, it is also about a character that is forced into isolation to resolve the world crisis. We chose isolation because it suites with the mood and genre of the film. It creates suspense and mystery as to why mason is in there, who put him there, what he is trying to figure out etc. Isolation is a typical thing in physiological thrillers because it suites well with physiologically unstable characters which is what we are trying to do.
  • 4. 3 Because our film is aimed at young adults and teens ranging from 16-25 our character is dressed casually and how a normal young adult would dress. We wanted to do this so we can relate to our target audience and give a small message to what teenagers can sometimes go through. This is not typical in a physiological thriller, teenagers are not normally involved. Typically you will have a man in his 30’s or 40’s as a main character. We also used props to portray this message, as it is aimed to an age range where they are most likely in education we used pens and paper to relate to how stressful working can be. We use these props to show mason going almost crazy trying to solve and figure something out, like a teenager or a uni student will try to solve a complicated math's equation.
  • 5. 4 In physiological thrillers we found that close ups are very typical. This is because the best way to show the physiology of a person is to show what the person is doing in every detail, for example body movements, facial expressions, what they are wearing etc. Similarly in the opening sequence of the physiological thriller movie insomnia, it is full of close ups of the victims crime scene shots, extreme close ups of an old mans face and hand movements etc. This is what we have tried to do in our film. In our opening scene we have close up shots of my face twitching, foot movements, hands tapping on the table, close ups of all the research that mason has done etc. In this particular screenshot is mason looking up into the mirror as the camera slowly zooms in. His plain abnormal facial expression gives a symbolic code that he is not physiologically stable.
  • 6. 5 We have done some editing to the film to suite the genre a bit more. For example we decided to make the opening scene black and white. This suites the isolation theme, as black and white are very plain colors it adds to the mystery and the feeling of isolation.
  • 7. 6 We decided to draw our title using a fake needle injector and ketchup. The screenshot was the outcome. There are a number of things we did for our title to allow it to fit with the genre. Firstly the prop we used was the fake needle injector, this fits in with the whole medical crisis that is going on in the story. Secondly we used the color red to make it look like blood, and blood gives connotations of death and harm. Thirdly we used a white board which also shows isolation and makes the blood stand out. Lastly we used flashing lights to create suspense and mystery.
  • 8. 7 There were a couple of parts in the opening scene that set the story and gave clues to what it was all about. The first part was mason getting pushing into the isolation room. This shows that he was forcefully put in there by a powerful force. This will get the audience wondering who that powerful force is. The Second most important part of the opening story that gives away hints is mason doing all that paper work. This is showing the audience he is trying to figure out something. The audience at this point will probably be trying to figure out what he is doing. However when things progress there is the biggest give away in our opening scene. That is when it shows all the research that mason has done on the disease and news articles showing havoc and panic.
  • 9. 8 Our character is introduced as a helpless mentally unstable guy that is being forced to do something he is finding extremely difficult to do. In the opening scene we have close ups, over the shoulder and lots of different shots showing the characters facial expressions. They are dull, plain and depressing facial expression. This portrays the character to be very unhappy. The main things we did to ensure our character was shown to be mentally unstable is to get him to behave abnormally. He rocked back and forth, twitched, violently kicked a chair, was very sensitive to noises around him, moved his head and body a lot etc. These were the clues we gave to our audience to show what type of person the main character is.
  • 10. 9 In this shot I throw I piece of paper on the floor out of anger and stress. As the paper floated down very nicely we decided to create a special affect out of it to make the scene more dramatic. We made this part slow motion to give the audience time to think for a bit what is going on. As our transitions are very fast the audience does not have time to think into things. Here it gives that little bit of time for the audience to think about what type of person he is.
