Media Institutions
Distribution We had to choose between two distribution companies. The first is Warner Bros. It has been around for over 100 years, and so knows the market well. From it’s birth in 1903, it grew and expanded, and, over the years, a series of mergers and acquisitions have helped Warner Bros. to accumulate a diverse collection of movies, cartoons, and television programs. Examples of this collection include the Harry Potter movies, Space Jam, The Matrix films, the Batman films, Watchmen and Inception. Warner Bros, being both Horizontally and Vertically integrated, and would have been able to distribute our film to not only well known cinemas (such as Odeon or View), but to their own cinemas in the US. If the product gets turned into a DVD, Warner Bros. will be able to distribute that too, as they have done for films before. Or, we could go with a more local Distribution Company; Momentum Pictures. Owned by Alliance Films, it is one of the leading independent motion picture distributors in the UK and Ireland and releases approximately 20 theatrical films a year, with several stv (direct-to-video) releases. It has released films such as 'The King's Speech', 'The Fighter', 'Defiance', and 'District 13: Ultimatum'. In partnership with Cineplex Entertainment, Alliance Films also operates Alliance Cinemas, owner of two Toronto-area theatres. During the MPD era, all materials relating to Alliance Atlantis-distributed films contained a disclaimer stating that Alliance Atlantis was "an indirect limited partner of Motion Picture Distribution LP, not a general partner". However, in fact, the company controlled the general partner of the partnership, and hence effectively controlled the distribution unit itself.
And the victor is… After much debating, we decided that, ultimately, Momentum Pictures is a lot more local. Therefore, it would be more realistic to have a company closer to home distribute out production.  With it’s vertical and horizontal integration, not only would it help us make the product, but it could screen it in it’s own cinema and distribute it to the general public with ease.
Production Company To produce our media product, we chose DR-Entertainment, a fictional company made from the initials of my partner’s and my first names and the type of area that company would focus on if it were in the real market (entertainment media). Being a small British company, we would neither be vertically nor horizontally integrated, working on donations from the public, money raised through events and funds received from our distributors. Previously, before the Conservatives came to power, we would have recieved funding from the UK Film Council, which has recently been absorbed into the Arts Council under the new Conservative Government.
