Evaluation Question 3
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and
why?
An independent film
From the beginning of production, we definitely planned our film to be
independently produced and distributed. Therefore we feel it would be
appropriate for multiple small distribution companies to work in
corporation in order to help boost recognition for each other.
Such companies that I felt are most appropriate would include:
• Revolver Entertainment
• Momentum Pictures
Both of these companies are UK based, and have been involved with
few successful independent films previously, however are beginning to
make a name for themselves.
Revolver Entertainment is a film distribution company founded in London in
1997 by Justin Marciano. Although they have been round for a while, the
majority of the film titles they have worked on have been produced in the last
5 years.
They have worked on many popular independent thriller films, that branch
over a wide variety of subgenres, however I thought they would be specifically
appropriate for Sicarius due to their role in the distribution of House of Last
Things (2013) – a horror thriller film that gained above average ratings from
film critics, as well as the unassisted distribution of An Act of War (2015),
which received 90% positive rating on well known critical film analysis
company Rotten Tomatoes. While an act of war is an action thriller instead of
a horror thriller, it still shows the company’s recent progress over the years
and I therefore think they are suitable candidates to work on our film.
Momentum Pictures are a subsidiary of the massive film production
company entertainmentOne. Momentum only recently changed hands
to entertainmentOne in 2013, and since then have not been able to
work on the large amount of films they were working on before, as
they relaunched in 2015. Therefore I think that Sicarius could be a good
opportunity for Momentum to gain back the recognition they once
had before entertainmentOne took over.
Releases prior to their 2015 relaunch include massive horror titles such
as Sinister, The Woman in Black and Insidious. Hopefully Momentum
would be able to rekindle their forte in the distribution of Sicarius, as
they would act as the bigger company of the two (if working in
corporation with Revolver Entertainment).
Local Distribution
I deliberately chose two London-based distribution companies as this
would make communication between the two easier. This is also
beneficial as we intend to only release the film in UK to start off with,
and to see how it scores with the critics. If it goes down well, we will
then push to have it released worldwide, however as the two
distribution companies are reasonably low budget, working on a
worldwide release is not a risk the companies would be able to take for
an independent film.
Media Distribution
I personally think that the best means of distributing an independent film
like ours would be through online streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu
and Amazon Prime. The reason for this is that it would help the distribution
companies gain popularity without having to spend masses of money
marketing their film and gaining attention from the Box Office. However, the
gaining popularity of these streaming services would grant the film a large
platform to gain recognition at a lower cost.
Another way the film could be distributed would be at film festivals, allowing
large audiences to view the films for free, and therefore increasing it’s
popularity via word-of-mouth. The film would be played at film festivals
before its online release, therefore generating anticipation for it’s online
release which would overall increase the viewership.
