1. Codes and Conventions Of A Front Cover
and Contents Page Of A Music Magazine
By Annie Johnson
2. FRONT COVER
The main image of a magazine front cover is either an artist or band
which relates to the genre of the magazine. For example, the magazine
‘VIBE’ is an R & B magazine, so they use an R & B artist for the front cover.
The titles of the magazine are occasionally slightly covered by the
band/artist, this only happens if the magazine is well known and the
audience will still know what magazine it is even with part of the title being
covered.
3. On a front cover of a music magazine, the colour schemes are
usually very simple. For example the magazine ‘Music’, that colour
scheme is just red and black.
The background of a front cover is plain, this is so the writing
and image stand out to the audience more.
4. The image of the band/artist on the front cover of a music
magazine conveys the attitude of the artist/band.
This is helped to convey the attitude by the lighting and camera
angle of the front cover image.
For example, the attitude of drake conveys that
he is a ‘cool’, possibly a very laid back person
and edgy.
5. The cover lines on a music magazine often has names of
different artists which fit in with the genre of the
magazine. This makes the magazine attract a wider
audience range, for example; if the main image is of an
artist which a person doesn’t like but the cover lines say
that they interviewed an artist that they do like they are
likely to be attracted to it.
6. CONTENTS PAGE
The features in a contents page are only ‘one off’ articles,
which means they will only appear in that issue of the
magazine.
The regular content of the magazine is a small font.
7. The headings in a contents page are usually
different colours so they stand out and attract the
audience’s attention.
