Why educational institutes challenge wikipedia
Educational institutions are skeptical of using Wikipedia as a credible source for student research and learning for three main reasons: 1) Wikipedia articles can be edited by anyone, including those with biases or personal agendas, so information may not be verified or factual; 2) Important topics may be overlooked while less significant topics are overly represented based on the interests of editors; and 3) Traditional sources like encyclopedias from Britannica are seen as more authoritative since their authors are vetted experts rather than anonymous online contributors.

Wikipedia is one form of social media, and often at the bull’s eye of “new media myopia” (Obar, 2012). When asked to do research, Wikipedia is usually the first place students look. While we might want to teach students that Wikipedia is one place to start, it usually is not the one place where we want them to end. Therefore, incorporating Wikipedia into classroom instruction is a powerful way to teach students how to analyze the sources they use. This presentation will introduce educators to possible ways Wikipedia can be utilized in the classroom as a teaching and learning tool.

Since Wikipedia launched in 2001, librarians have maintained a cautious and, at times, hostile relationship with the online, crowd-sourced encyclopedia. Wikimedia’s mission is to be ‘the sum of all human knowledge’. That Wikipedia has amassed over 40 million articles in over 290 languages in its short existence is quite incredible and a testament to the dedication of its community of volunteers. Yet the distribution of articles in these different language Wikipedias is nowhere near evenly spread.
Wikipedia’s new Content Translation tool offers an impactful means of sharing open knowledge globally between languages as it brings up an article on one side of the screen in one language and helps translate it, paragraph by paragraph, to create the article in a different language taking all the formatting across to the new article so a native speaker just has to check to make sure the translation is as good as it can be.
This presentation outlines the successful models already employed in a Higher Education context where one editor was able to translate five articles on notable Women in STEM onto Portuguese Wikipedia in one afternoon and where thirty Translation Studies MSc students were able to complete the translation of Wikipedia articles of 4000 words into different language Wikipedias. In this way, sharing open knowledge between languages and improving areas of under-representation.

The introduction of DLAU and the CCB & CCX licensing model caused quite a stir in the HCL community. As a Notes and Domino customer, you may have faced challenges with unexpected user counts and license costs. You probably have questions on how this new licensing approach works and how to benefit from it. Most importantly, you likely have budget constraints and want to save money where possible. Most college papers are read by a handful of people, at most, while a Wiki entry can be read by thousands (or millions) around the world. “ It’s the ability for students to feel that their works matters, that it doesn’t get trapped in the classroom,” said Adel Iskander, a Georgetown instructor who assigned Wiki entries in his graduate-level Arab media course. “We’re kind of challenging the academic establishment, in a way.”
