Increasing OER Adoptions with the Community College Consortium for OERUna Daly
During the past few years, adoptions of open textbooks at community colleges have increased. A key component in many community college adoption campaigns has been participating in communities of practice. Members of the Community College Consortium for OER (CCCOER) will share their successful strategies and tactics for creating a community of practice nationally as well as locally.
Etienne Wenger defines communities of practice as “groups of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly.” With over 200 member colleges in 17 states and provinces, CCCOER encourages collaboration between members and invites OER project presentations at their monthly online advisory meetings. Experienced members advise those who are just getting started on OER and best practices are freely shared. Access to a community of college OER experts through the CCCOER listserve makes it easier for new members to find and adopt the highest quality OER available in their disciplines.
Monthly webinars featuring OER leaders at community colleges, universities, and educational organizations around the world keep the community informed of new research findings, OER projects, and open policies. Meetups at regional and national conferences provide an opportunity to share and promote the OER adoption successes of our members with colleagues throughout higher education.

Wikipedia: A Tool for Teaching (Skeptical) Research Elizabeth Nesius
Wikipedia is one form of social media, and often at the bull’s eye of “new media myopia” (Obar, 2012). When asked to do research, Wikipedia is usually the first place students look. While we might want to teach students that Wikipedia is one place to start, it usually is not the one place where we want them to end. Therefore, incorporating Wikipedia into classroom instruction is a powerful way to teach students how to analyze the sources they use. This presentation will introduce educators to possible ways Wikipedia can be utilized in the classroom as a teaching and learning tool.
Building Bridges Not Walls - Wikipedia's new Content Translation toolEwan McAndrew
Slides from today's presentation at the Open Educational Resources Conference 2017 held at Resource for London on 5-6 April 2017.
Wikimedia’s mission is to be ‘the sum of all human knowledge’. That Wikipedia has amassed over 40 million articles in over 290 languages in its short existence is quite incredible and a testament to the dedication of its community of volunteers. Yet the distribution of articles in these different language Wikipedias is nowhere near evenly spread.
Wikipedia’s new Content Translation tool offers an impactful means of sharing open knowledge globally between languages as it brings up an article on one side of the screen in one language and helps translate it, paragraph by paragraph, to create the article in a different language taking all the formatting across to the new article so a native speaker just has to check to make sure the translation is as good as it can be.
This presentation outlines the successful models already employed in a Higher Education context where one editor was able to translate five articles on notable Women in STEM onto Portuguese Wikipedia in one afternoon and where thirty Translation Studies MSc students were able to complete the translation of Wikipedia articles of 4000 words into different language Wikipedias. In this way, sharing open knowledge between languages and improving areas of under-representation.

Synthetic Fiber Construction in lab .pptxPavel ( NSTU)
Synthetic fiber production is a fascinating and complex field that blends chemistry, engineering, and environmental science. By understanding these aspects, students can gain a comprehensive view of synthetic fiber production, its impact on society and the environment, and the potential for future innovations. Synthetic fibers play a crucial role in modern society, impacting various aspects of daily life, industry, and the environment. ynthetic fibers are integral to modern life, offering a range of benefits from cost-effectiveness and versatility to innovative applications and performance characteristics. While they pose environmental challenges, ongoing research and development aim to create more sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives. Understanding the importance of synthetic fibers helps in appreciating their role in the economy, industry, and daily life, while also emphasizing the need for sustainable practices and innovation.

3. What we’ve done…
• As a class using Pirate Pad, a platform allowing
participants of the course to collectively edit
work together, we’ve focused mainly on editing
the Wikipedia page for the North London
Literary Festival which runs from this University
•
• As a result of the input of students on the course,
the Wikipedia page has changed from a basic
factsheet with no more than a few sentences
into a Wikipedia page filled with pictures,
detailed information and sourced facts. We’ve
transformed a ‘’poor’’ and ‘’unloved’’ Wikipedia
page into something we’ve been proud to
collectively create.
4.
5. What we’ve learnt
• We’ve learnt so many skills, from basic
WML (Wiki Markup Language) to the
creation of info boxes, to adding
pictures and adding text whilst abiding
to Wikipedia and the fellow editors
rules and expected conduct.
•
• We’ve learnt to be inspired to create our
own content off our own backs for
Wikipedia. Speaking for myself here,
I’ve had fun adding pictures from
Wikimedia and uploading them to the
Wikipedia pages of those without any
pictures in their info boxes.

15. WP and the needs of primary and secondary aged pupils
The question I intend to address is how does WP service the
needs of primary and secondary aged pupils, and how can we
harness their skills in improving Wikipedia.
We agree that we are failing them
We as a body appear to be scared of them, and initiatives will
always be greeted with-
●
thats important but maybe next year,
●
or ẃe have no way of reaching them,
●
or we should just let them use simple,
16. Needs of children
●
The teacher learns the topic- so he can set the
task.
●
The child looks at the task
●
The parents feverishly support the child- and in
the end do the task the teacher has set, writing
out the answer, which the child copies and hands
in
Vast number of social class, and work-life balance issues here
17. The partners
There are other players.
●
There is the oppressive national curriculum,
●
More benign curriculums.- Curriculum writers
●
GCSE exam boards who interpret it. - Exam boards
●
London schools were always helped by ILECC which has morphed into London Grid for
Learning. -Advisory service
●
Teachers were assisted by their professional bodies- Unions
●
and local teachers centres managed by the LEA. (some have survived)- INSET
providers
These are our potential partners.
Our approach is to let out partners list classify and list the articles that would assist
●
the teacher preparing the topic,
●
the child that investigating the idea
●
and the parents that will be supporting the learner.
We provide the means
18. Our role
●
Our role is to facilitate this by providing a portal
(or software structure that allows it to happen)
●
To provide a partnership structure to enable the
people concerned to come on board.
20. Directions
●
Listen to our new partners on the way forward- they must lead
●
Never underestimate some youngster ability to master a subject. A
good teacher may be a provisional expert- but recognises when a
focused youngster is better than them on a particular topic then
and exploits it. The same will go for some of our articles.
●
Youngsters work alongside their parents. Train the parent in wiki-
editting- and we will have two new editors. The parents are out
partners.
●
I haven't mentioned Wikidata- but surely a product tag could
become an attribute

31. Key learning points
• Creating a variety of stimulating events engages practitioners from different backgrounds.
• Working collaboratively and sharing good practice & has been crucially important.
• Once understood, Wikipedia & its sister projects offer a great deal to Higher Education and can be successfully
integrated to enhance the learning & teaching within the curriculum.
• Demystifying Wikipedia through presentations, workshops & scaffolded resources has yielded positive reactions &
an increased understanding of Wikipedia's important role in the dissemination of knowledge.
32. “Knowledge is alive and growing

used; not just static, but engaged
