Most term papers produced by students are of poor quality. However, having students create Wikipedia pages can be an engaging alternative that teaches important research and writing skills. Through workshops and feedback, the Wikipedia Education Program helps students learn how to properly cite sources, write in an encyclopedic style, and structure their work on important topics like plate tectonics. Creating Wikipedia pages requires careful planning and guidance to teach technological communication skills and turn Wikipedia from an adversary into an ally for research.

World University and School (WUaS) is proposing a grand challenge to create standardized educational materials in over 1,329 languages. WUaS was founded in 2008 by Scott MacLeod as an open online university like Wikipedia that provides open courseware. The proposed challenge would award funding to the first faculty member who creates a reasonably complex learning module and test that is translated into over 1,329 languages. Examples mentioned include translating the California driver's handbook or passages from the Bible. The goal is to advance machine translation and cognitive technologies while helping learners in many languages.

Abstract: Librarians strive to encourage students’ lifelong learning and critical thinking skills. Enhancing their awareness of Open Access resources in an increasingly complex digital information landscape furthers this objective. This session will explore ways librarians are promoting OA publications, focusing specifically on how these resources can enrich students’ lives now and for years to come.
Maker Space & Entrepreneur Incubator
A pioneer for makerspaces in academic settings shares how it is sparking imagination and innovation in many ways: from Lego and puzzle kits throughout the library, to 3D printers and laser cutters to design workshops and hack-a-thons. It shares the resources, services, and outreach services that have led students and faculty onto the path of greater innovation and scholarship. Speakers share their experiences on why and how we can get started, as well as challenges and solutions. They also share strategic vision for the future on the development of the makerspace as incubator for young entrepreneurs and how this could fundamentally change how higher education provides a new context for students gaining real-life experience, job skills, and connect what they are passionate about to what they are learning.
Contributing to the global commons: Repositories and Wikimedia
There is huge potential for universities and their libraries to leverage Wikimedia in order to expose research outputs and collections. Wikimedia comprises sixteen projects in total, including Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. At the University of Leeds, the Research Data Management Service have successfully run a project that focuses on linking research data with the Wikimedia suite of tools via a series of ‘editathons’, in order to increase the visibility of research data and enable reuse on Wikipedia and elsewhere. The project - "Manage it locally to share it globally: RDM and Wikimedia Commons" - was the winning submission to a competition launched in May 2018 and sponsored by SPARC Europe, Jisc and the University of Cambridge, called the "Data Management Engagement Award", which aimed to address cultural challenges involved in promoting effective research data practices.
The project has served as a springboard to further explore Wikimedia strategically, both at the University of Leeds and across the White Rose Consortium. For example we are collaborating on a new project looking at Wikipedia citations of research from York, Sheffield and Leeds, and the proportion of these that are open access. The long term goal might be to establish a "Wikimedian in Residence" across the consortium. In this talk, we will present the project's outputs - including a toolkit that will enable other institutions to apply the same methodology. In addition we will explore the potential of Wikidata to link up repositories and other data silos in a manner that enables reuse and increases impact.

That’s public, there’s a bit more incentive to make a quality product. So my approach has been to replace my due-at-term-end paper with a built-through-the-semester Wikipedia page project.

- How are you using Wikipedia as a teaching and learning tool in your C-I course? (consider connections to learning objectives, integration with content, assignment design, student experience, etc .)
- I was asked to tell you a little about how I work to improve students’ technological communication skills, and the honest answer is, I barely lift a finger. CxC’s Introduction to Wikipedia class – I schedule it with CxC, and I attend, but one of these good folks teaches me and my students about the basics of working with Wikipedia.CxC has us set up to work within the Wikipedia U.S. Education Program, and through those folks, volunteers attach themselves to courses they’re interested in. So for the past two years, this fellow Graeme Bartlett from Australia has been giving my students feedback through the talk pages of their wikipedia pages, helping them to improve them. Finally, there’s a lot of improvement that results from peer interaction, formalized through posts and class sessions. That tends to be the most productive avenue.
- What advice do you have for faculty considering making their courses C-I? (consider “to-do’s” and “not-to-do’s”)
