This document provides a report on the design of the main shaft and tower for a Vestas V52-850 kW wind turbine. It begins with an introduction and background review on wind turbine history, components, and design considerations. The objectives are then stated as a detailed design of the main shaft and selection of bearings and fixtures, and a detailed design of the tower. The methodology section outlines the design process flowchart. Free body diagrams are presented for the full wind turbine, tower, and shaft. Finally, stress analyses are shown in the appendices for both the tower and shaft, including calculations for buckling, bending, fatigue, safety factors, and dependent results.
