MCGREGOR’S THEORY X AND
THEORY Y
What factors determine the style of leadership that managers use?
Theory X
 View their workers as lazy.
 Disliking work and unprepared to accept
responsibility.
 Need to be controlled and made to work.
 Autocratic style of leadership
Theory Y
 Workers did enjoy work and that they found
it as natural as rest or play.
 Prepared to accept responsibility.
 Creative and would take an active part in
contributing ideas and solutions to work-
related problems.
 He does not suggest that there are two types
of workers, X andY.
 The attitudes of management to workers
could, in extreme cases, be described by
these two theories.
 Most managers have views somewhere
between these two extremes.
The ‘best’ leadership style-
it depends on many factors.
 Training and experience.
 Time
 The attitude of managers.
 The importance of the issues under
consideration.
 Highly educated
 Higher expectations
Informal leader
 Activity 8.4

 Self-management

  • 1. MCGREGOR’S THEORY X AND THEORY Y What factors determine the style of leadership that managers use?
  • 2. Theory X  View their workers as lazy.  Disliking work and unprepared to accept responsibility.  Need to be controlled and made to work.  Autocratic style of leadership
  • 3. Theory Y  Workers did enjoy work and that they found it as natural as rest or play.  Prepared to accept responsibility.  Creative and would take an active part in contributing ideas and solutions to work- related problems.
  • 4.  He does not suggest that there are two types of workers, X andY.  The attitudes of management to workers could, in extreme cases, be described by these two theories.  Most managers have views somewhere between these two extremes.
