Continuous improvement: the Deming Wheel (PDCA)encognize G.K.
To a certain extent, improving the performance of a company can be achieved through the improvement of its underlying structure, processes and organization. As part of the famous Kaizen practices, a common management method used to initiate and sustain a virtuous circle of continuous improvement is the Deming wheel, also known as the Shewhart cycle and more frequently referred as the PDCA cycle. This method simply consists in running iteratively four steps on the system to improve: Plan (define objectives, success criteria, contingencies), Do (execution), Check (analyse result against initial objectives and success criteria), Act (adjust).

Results-Based Accountability ™ is a performance management framework outlined by performance outcomes specialist Mark Friedman in “Trying Hard is Not Good Enough.” More than 600 of Vermont’s nonprofit and state government leaders have been trained to use RBA to answer these critical performance questions: How much are we doing? How well are we doing it? Is anyone better off? Learn how to promote the “culture of accountability” within your business, organization or coalition. Benchmarks for a Better Vermont offers this 90-minute RBA overview/refresher using examples from Vermont’s farm and food systems sector.
Getting to Outcomes®: Promoting accountability through methods and tools for planning, implementation, and evaluation
The Getting to Outcomes® (GTO) approach is based on traditional evaluation methods, empowerment evaluation, results-based accountability and continuous quality improvement. While traditional evaluation methods typically use external evaluators, working at an arm's length from practitioners, empowerment evaluation supports collaborative relationships between evaluators and practitioners. Empowerment evaluation is based on the notion that program success is more likely when evaluators collaborate with practitioners and provide them with the tools and opportunities to plan, implement, evaluate and develop a continuous quality improvement system themselves.
The three key features of the GTO system are as follows:
1. The GTO approach can be used at any stage of program planning, implementation and evaluation.
2. The GTO approach is not linear.
3. The GTO approach promotes cultural competence in programming.
How can the Getting to Outcomes approach help you?
The GTO approach helps practitioners improve the accountability and quality of their programs. This tool will be helpful for program planners, managers and program evaluation specialists. It can be used to assist with program planning, implementation and evaluation phases to inform continuous quality improvement strategies. For instance, tools within this resource could help users refine and shift existing programs to meet the needs of a changing demographic population in diabetes prevention.

Simplifying processes for the customers of BC Clinical and Support Service (BCCSS) team was a focal point of their value proposition. Starting with a foundation of consistent, well-documented Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and complimenting it with sound process governance the BCCSS team set out on a province-wide service mission to reduce risk, control cost and increase predictability. In the highly regulated healthcare industry, one that is experiencing significant business environment change, the need for efficiently managing and maintaining SOPs and process details is not only mission critical but also helps to drive process improvement and build employee engagement

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202
Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.

Embracing GenAI - A Strategic ImperativePeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

Editor's Notes
How are we doing?
Can we do it better?
Edwards PJ, et al. Maximizing your investment in EHR: Utilizing EHRs to inform continuous quality
improvement. JHIM 2008;22(1):32
Who contributed to the plans developed in the pilot?
How many individuals in each program? Between 1 – 48 people contributed to each of the CQI plans, about 25% of the plans were completed by just 1or 2 people, and the average number of people working on a plan for a program was 10.
ERS, SF, Arnett/CLASS
Poll here which tolls are used in your program? Have you used information from the tools in the planning process?
This is an area for any additional action steps.
Does have a rug, but does not have at least 3 or more soft toys accessible to reach a score of 3.
Sample CQI planning (using the polling tool)
This afterschool programs used their data to identify needs for improvement in furnishings for relaxation and comfort, as well as their indoor gross motor space.
This center-based program used their ECERS-R data to identify an issue with the sizes of the chairs and tables in the room, as well as the need for more materials that reflect the diversity of the children enrolled in the program.
DEVELOP a Continuous Quality Improvement Plan by completing the following steps:
Allocate administrative planning time to develop the CQIP (allow time in staff meetings to work on the CQIP, encourage ALL staff to engage in the process).
Review all QRIS required documentation (for example: your program’s policy for including parental input in progress reports).
Review the Professional Qualifications Registry (PQR) for all staff (do any staff members need required trainings or college coursework added to their IPDP?)
Review data from all of the required Measurement Tools, including: Program Administration Scale (PAS); Environment Rating Scales (ITERS-R and ECERS-R); Classroom Assessment Scoring System (CLASS) OR Arnett; Strengthening Families ; Health and Safety Self-Assessment; Staff Surveys (Level 3 and Level 4); Family Surveys (Level 3 and Level 4).
Identify the program’s areas of strength (what are you doing well?)
Identify the program’s areas for potential growth (what aspects of your program could benefit from improvement?)
Create clear action steps that will support identified areas for potential growth (prioritize the areas that are most important in sustaining your current level and/or moving your program up to the next level).
Identify team members who are responsible for the action steps (this will likely include administrative staff and educators).
Determine target dates for completion of action steps (make sure the dates are achievable, yet also hold the program staff accountable).
IMPLEMENT the program’s Continuous Quality Improvement Plan by completing the following steps:
Allocate resources to support progress on the CQIP (staff, materials, trainings, etc.)
Use classroom observation time to identify progress on the goals and action steps in your plan (encourage all staff to assist with observations)
Provide concrete feedback to educators to support their continued growth (improvement in program quality benefits staff as well as children and families!)
Keep family members informed of the steps you are taking to improve the quality of your program (invite them to participate in the CQI process)
REFLECT on progress by completing the following steps:
Review the CQIP quarterly (what are we doing well?)
Identify action steps that need continued work (what can we do better?)
Update the Continuous Quality Improvement Plan annually, or more frequently if necessary (go back to DEVELOP the CQIP).
