Over the 16 years that we've been providing support to organizations at nearly every stage of the Lean journey, leadership has consistently emerged as the single most important determinant of success. Those organizations with deep leadership engagement soar, while those who don't fail to experience significant transformation.
In this first of three webinars, Karen shares the perspective and content that she and her team use when working with executives and senior leadership teams within the firm's clients.
She review the system of Lean principles, management practices, and tools, and then focuses on 6 of the topics leaders most commonly misunderstand or are unaware of:
1. Three of the core values that underlie Lean management
2. Key performance indicators
3. Visual management
4. Work standardization
5. Go and see (Gemba) management
6. The one environmental "don't" that destroys all Lean effort

For decades now, "management" has been synonymous with managing people. Meanwhile, processes, the lifeblood of an organization, remain largely unmanaged. In this webinar, Karen shares her views on why we need to change our thinking and her practical how-to's for making this vital pivot.
The world has changed dramatically since LEAN and Six Sigma were popularized in the early 1990′s. Globalization, product proliferation, information technology, intense competition, and an activist regulatory environment have contributed to a rapid rise in complexity. As a result, many companies are finding that LEAN and Six Sigma aren’t delivering the results they expected. In this presentation, delivered by Chris Seifert at APICS 2013, we discuss a new approach that a select few companies are utilizing to achieve Operational Excellence in the face of complexity.

Lean Thinking is a philosophy of Aligning People to Process to Purpose to Prosper. A Lean leader has to be a mentor, coach and guide for his team. The focus is to minimize daily fire fighting and graduating towards an organization focusing on continuous improvement and innovation.
Visual Management is a lean communication tool to help keep focus on priority initiatives in the workplace as well as keeping your thumb on the pulse of daily operations. I will take you through the evolution of one areas visibility management system and how this has now spread through all divisions of our Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Department to become standard work. You will take away ideas and inspiration to incorporate this communication system in your workplace. Success comes from ensuring the loop of communication goes full circle from leadership to front line and back to leadership for full understanding.

When Management Asks You: “Do You Accept Agile as Your Lord and Savior?"admford
So you’ve been told that your organization is going to implement Agile methodologies across ALL of IT, and not just in development. And you’ve been given the responsibility to implement it in Security Operations, and without a clear plan or measurable objectives other than “make the team more efficient”. While one can complain that someone in the C-Suite heard of the book “Scrum: The Art of Doing Twice the Work in Half the Time”, you still have a job to do. So the basics of Project Management, Agile, Scrum & Kanban are covered and how one can shoehorn these concepts into working in an operations context. Oh, and there will also be some finagling of where DevOps stands regarding Agile and Operations.

Updated version of my original Cyphercon talk. With more useful information regarding how to enact change and better visual representation of certain concepts. This talk was given at CircleCityCon 10 in 2023
The Value Management SIG presented Chris Samson and Daniel Rahamim from London Underground who offered an insight to the organisational approach of implementing Lean principles in one of London Underground's major upgrade programmes.
Want to ensure everything you do adds value to your business? Want to make a real difference to business performance and customer satisfaction?
This challenge was taken up by London underground’s Sub Surface Upgrade Programme (SUP) 18 months ago amidst a time of cost savings, programme review and ever increasing expectations and scrutiny from our stakeholders and customers.

How Leadership Commitment and a Systematic Approach Spread ImprovementKaiNexus
Hosted by KaiNexus, presented by Karen Kiel-Rosser and Ron Smith of Mary Greeley Medical Center.
Does your organization struggle with engaging everybody in daily continuous improvement? Is it difficult to figure out how to combine formal improvement events, projects, and "WorkOuts" while engaging all employees to bring forward their ideas? Are you unsure how to spread improvement methodologies across departments?
In this webinar, you will learn:
How MGMC has combined Lean tools and methodologies with a "managing for daily improvement" approach
How leadership and technology enable and support successful improvement methodologies
MGMC's vision for leaders getting everybody engaged in improvement
How MGMC has systematically (and successfully) spread continuous improvement methodologies across the hospital over the past 12 months
Why it's important to engage leaders and to educate them about improvement and the role they need to play
Mary Greeley Medical Center (MGMC), a 220 bed acute care facility in Ames, Iowa, has received "Gold" level recognition in the Iowa Recognition for Performance Excellence (IRPE) program, the top honor in the IRPE program (the state level Malcolm Baldrige award).

Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.

These pipelines are adept at managing low-latency, high-data-volume scenarios.
Understanding Inductive Bias in Machine LearningSUTEJAS
This presentation explores the concept of inductive bias in machine learning. It explains how algorithms come with built-in assumptions and preferences that guide the learning process. You'll learn about the different types of inductive bias and how they can impact the performance and generalizability of machine learning models.
The presentation also covers the positive and negative aspects of inductive bias, along with strategies for mitigating potential drawbacks. We'll explore examples of how bias manifests in algorithms like neural networks and decision trees.
By understanding inductive bias, you can gain valuable insights into how machine learning models work and make informed decisions when building and deploying them.

Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.

Water billing management system project report.pdfKamal Acharya
Our project entitled “Water Billing Management System” aims is to generate Water bill with all the charges and penalty. Manual system that is employed is extremely laborious and quite inadequate. It only makes the process more difficult and hard.
The aim of our project is to develop a system that is meant to partially computerize the work performed in the Water Board like generating monthly Water bill, record of consuming unit of water, store record of the customer and previous unpaid record.
We used HTML/PHP as front end and MYSQL as back end for developing our project. HTML is primarily a visual design environment. We can create a android application by designing the form and that make up the user interface. Adding android application code to the form and the objects such as buttons and text boxes on them and adding any required support code in additional modular.
MySQL is free open source database that facilitates the effective management of the databases by connecting them to the software. It is a stable ,reliable and the powerful solution with the advanced features and advantages which are as follows: Data Security.MySQL is free open source database that facilitates the effective management of the databases by connecting them to the software.
3. What is Lean Daily Management?
• A system (including the structure) to
manage daily work, including
• Customer demand
• Best Practices and Standards
• Equipment & the workplace
• Improvement
• People
4. Who Does It?
• Work Teams
• Supported by supervisors and managers
• Supported by specialists
• These are not temporary project teams
• Note: Technicians and specialists may be on the
team as full or extended members
• Also Note: The team concept extends beyond front
line teams – it includes management teams
5. Time Frame
• At the speed of “now”
• Actions, information flow, measurement,
and improvement occur in the moment
(no waiting)
7. Why Lean Daily Management?
• Know the real facts
• Team members are closest to the work and
ongoing events
• Quick Response
• Team members can be fastest to respond
• Have a complete view
• Team thinking is more complete
• Create a Learning Organization
• Provides a platform for personal and
professional growth and improvement

12. Key Performance Indicators
• Quantifiable measurements
• Agreed to beforehand
• Reflect critical success factors
• Measured as summaries, over
time (trend charts)
• Linked to organizational goals
• Examples:
• # units per hour
• Cycle times
• On time delivery
• Patient wait times
• Rework time
• Lost time due to accidents
• Accounts receivable turnover

15. Work Teams: A Shift In Thinking
• The team manages daily work
• The team facilitator may be the supervisor or can be
chosen by the team
• The facilitator is an operator and also a coordinator
(spokesperson/link)
• The team receives business objectives from
management
18. What is Standardized Work?
• The most effective way for a worker to
complete their work (doing the right
work right)
• Standardized Work considers the
relationship of the worker with:
• Work flow (sequence of work)
• Time (demand and efficiency)
• Materials (parts and supplies)
• Information
• Equipment and tools
• Work space and environment
19. Purpose of Best Practices
• Perform work in the best way possible
• Define the “job” of a worker
• Create a training platform
• Determine normal from abnormal
• Establish a platform for improvement
Without standards there can be no improvement

30. Daily Problem Solving
• Small tests of change
• Every day
• By everyone
• Using a systematic method
• Standards are your platform for improvement
• KPIs provide the context
• Teams do the work
Problem Solving is a later step in building a lean daily
management system. Putting it first is like putting lipstick on a pig.

35. Two Primary Roles
Coach
Uses coaching methods to
teach Kaizen. Usually one
level up from Learner
Learner
Person leading or
responsible for a group,
team, or process
36. Coaching Cycles
• Used to guide the learner through the steps of the
Improvement Kata for a real issue
• They are a way to guide and give feedback
• They are short, to the point, with follow-up
• Assess the current status of readiness & the focus process
• Find out how much the learner knows about the current condition
• Give procedural guidance
• In addition, you are also learning and growing as a coach
Each cycle should lead to a small test of change, a
next step
38. Go to the Gemba
• Gemba means “the real place”
• Go to gemba means “go to the source”
• Go to the scene
• Report from the scene
• Talk to real witnesses

40. The 3 Actions
• The 3 Actions for Standard Work for
Leaders are:
• Find
• Fix
• Fortify
• These actions relate to standards
• Find problems or non-adherence (see)
• Fix the variation, problem (solve problems)
• Fortify, make stronger (sustain)

43. Reasons Why Attempts to Empower Fail
• Lip service but no belief
• Managers don’t really understand it
• No clear boundaries for empowerment
• Micromanagement of the work
• Second guessing
• No strategic framework (no compass)
• Lack of information & training
• Allowing barriers to exist
• Blame environment
• Overburden & underpaid
