Taking that, by definition, punishment involves inflicting some kind of pain on the offender, the
ideas of reform and incapacitation are largely seen as secondary to the main purpose of punishment
to deter. The most well known proponents of utilitarianism have almost always justified punishment
in terms of its deterrent effect. Bentham, for example, argued that apparent justice was everything,
and real justice was essentially irrelevant. And John Stuart Mill, in defending the death penalty,
stated that to deter by suffering by inflicting suffering is not only possible, but the very purpose of

namely the denial that there is any moral justification for punishment other than preventing further

of parliamentary sovereignty is simply that only parliament has the right to make or unmake law
and that no other institution can challenge that right. This also includes the rule that parliament

successful, high paying job. Yet Charles Murray, author of the article Too Many People Are Going
To College, introduces a controversial side to the argument, believing that the decision for students
to attend college is one of great importance, but the choice may be made too soon. Murray
emphasizes the reasons why this situation exists and continues to be proven true in today s society
with factors such as the misleading statements to students about college and the high academic
standards students must conform to. In discussions of Charles Murray, he expresses his opinion on
the thoughts and feelings that are being transferred to students before college, claiming them to be
misleading. Murray brings to light the problem that exists in the constant pushing of guidance
counselors, teachers, and even politicians to aspire for a college degree no matter what, treating
every failure to go to college as an injustice (Murray 48). Yet, by doing so, parents and students are
often blindsided by the overwhelming cost of college that many cannot afford, or the sheer amount
of education students would put themselves through for no reason at all. Murray observes that one
aspect of this phenomenon has been labeled misaligned ambitions, meaning that adolescents have
career ambitions that are inconsistent with their educational plans (Murray 48). Convincing
students that college is the only guiding light to a better life forces students to see college as such,
an intellectual heaven where they can become anything, such as a doctor or an attorney without
understanding the educational hurdles they must surmount to achieve their goal (Murray 48 49).
They then attend a four year universitywith the depiction of college as a place where B.A.s are
handed out fresh in their minds, thoughtless as to if that particular college they are attending even

My Experience With Multiple Sclerosis
In my everyday world I don t think twice about how I am going to get through the day. Waking
up, getting dressed, and getting to school or work are very routine for me. I have been living life
without thinking about how those with disabilities get through their day. What struggles they
might see that I over look, such as brushing their teeth or eating a meal. So given the opportunity
to experience just how these individual s daily activities are with a neurological disorder helped
me see just how lucky I am. I have always been interested in the neurological aspect of therapy,
and so I decided to experience what it would be like to be someone with multiple sclerosis, or MS. I
have never been around anyone who has multiple sclerosis, so this was all new to me. Before I
could even begin to recreate multiple sclerosis I had to do some research on what it was. I found
that multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease that disturbs the nervous system.1 Those who
have this disease have destroyed myelin sheaths, causing the brain to improperly send signals
throughout the body. Multiple sclerosis symptomscan come and go due to triggers such as

1.At first glance, the Moon and Mercury have similar surface features yet on closer inspection we
find that significant differences exist. Compare and contrast the surfaces of the two bodies and
outline their respective geological histories.
The geology of the moon and mercury are very similar due to certain key aspects, but there are
also a few qualities that differentiate the two bodies. The Moon has a radius of 1738km in
comparison with Mercury, the smallest of the major planets with a radii of 2440km. The average
density of the Moon is 3.37 g/cm3 that is consistent with basaltic silicates. Like Earth the Moon has
a layered system, consisting of a crust, mantle, and core. From the radius and the mass Mercury
has a mean density of 5.4 g/cm3 which implies a dense iron (Fe) core. Just as the Moon consists
of an iron core with a softer molten liquid iron outer core. The outer core is believed to extend
out as far as 500km. The Moons core only holds 2% of its mass. Since Mercury is low in mass
there is less heat stored from formation its core is probably sold rather than liquid. The lunar
surface of the Moon is grey and tan, with a low albedo. Albedo is the reflective properties of
planets, satellites, and asteroids. Mercury also has a low albedo, which signifies that the

The way Jeff Corwin wrote it was a mix of scientific facts and journalistic approach. It was like
reading a story and learning more than you expect. It also differs from other books that present
the same types of facts because this book is more of a wakeup call. He specified human activity as
the root of all of it and has presented actual, hard, cold facts about its effects on our own species.
Jeff Corwin s experiences were the most engaging parts of the book. He has done so much to
help save the animals and the way he tells his stories shows his passion for these animals and his
love for what he does. There were intense moments in his stories and they were very exciting as
he brought readers into his adventure. It can be seen that his facts can be verified. His sources
were specifically listed in over 60 pages of bibliography. The average global temperature rose 1.3
degrees Fahrenheit from 1906 to 2005, according to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel
on Climate Change (IPCC), which predicts there will be an increase of 3.2 to 7.2 degrees
Fahrenheit in this century, depending on how effectively greenhouse gases are curbed. He sourced
this based on a book by the World watch Institute, State of The World 2009: Into a Warming World.

The premise of the novel (Year of Wonders) could be seen as the antithesis of a journey as the
villagers voluntarily agree to undertake a quarantine, which means they literally cannot go
anywhere. In what way does this text represent a journey?
Though the characters in Year of Wonders are unable to take a physical journey due to their actions,
their circumstances cause them to embark on many spiritual, mental and emotional journeys
through the course of the novel. Anna Frith, for instance, is forced during the plague year to
overcome the deaths of her sons and family, and take upon many new roles that she otherwise

This is also shown through her learning of medicine under Elinor Mompellion, as the death and
suffering around her act as a catalyst for her to undertake these studies, so that she may fight the
plague in some way.
Anna also undertakes a spiritual journey over the course of the book. Her learning of the villages
Rector, Michael Mompellion s true thoughts near the novels end, as well as her realisations on the
nature of some of the other villagers causes her to question her Christian faith and its restrictions it
places on her in the society she lives in. This can be seen in her accepting view of the Muslim faith
in the epilogue.
Year of Wonders can also be seen as taking the reader on an imaginative journey. Through reading
the book we can imagine ourselves in the time at which the characters live, faced by their same
decisions. Geraldine Brooks has helped further this in a number of ways. The story is told in a first
person perspective, allowing the reader to understand Anna s feelings and attitudes. Period dialogue
is used to help transport the reader into the time and place in which the novel is set. Geraldine
Brooks has paid particular attention into giving the majority of the characters secret failings for
instance, the Rectors beliefs causing him to punish his wife, and Aphra, Anna s Mother s decline
into madness and superstition. This has the effect of making them seem more human
