The Giver Comparison To A Dystopian Society
Two Become One
Dystopia contains a little utopia, and every utopia contains a little dystopia. It s very true , a thought
by Margaret Atwood, a canadian novelist, stating that in every society, utopian and dystopian qualities
are seen. Margaret brings to account the controversy of how our world is a dystopia and utopia. There
is always an illusion of a utopia and dystopia in the world, without those illusions the world would not
contain the beauty it is today. In both societies there are similar and different aspects to a dystopia and
utopian world at the cause of suicide, and the abundance of individuality.
Living in today s society is similar to a dystopian world as a result of immense mental pain causing
suicide. In The Giver by Lois Lowry, Jonas mentor, explains how he once had a Receiver, who he

In the dystopian novel The Giver, by Lois Lowry, the ability to express yourself is looked upon as a
transgression. Jonas begins share his ideas with his mentor, the Giver, and complains that if everything

(Lowry 123). Personalization is important and so is social development which Jonas community lacks.
It is a way of personal freedom and self expression. Individuality in today s society allows anyone to
choose their own importance in today s world. Diversity is celebrated and helps [encourage] ordinary
people to realize their potential and their inner depths. (Koch 16). Jonas believes that without choices
life is very dull while society today has the individual freedom to express our emotion. The strict laws
created by the Elders requires their citizens to take a pill that numbs feelings and passion which
decreases individual creativity. People today value on originality and advocating people which is one

Theme Of Nature In The Scarlet Letter
Tedra Vrbka
SLEssay
English 11 Period 4
16 November 2017
Passion and Hatred
In our nature, however, there is a provision, alike marvellous and merciful, that the sufferer should
never know the intensity of what he endures by its present torture, but chiefly by the pang that rankles
after it (Hawthorne 52). As Hester Prynne, the main character, is put through hardships from her sinful
nature, she faces the rough times sin gave her and the way she endures the lives of the people closest
to her. Nathaniel Hawthorne explains how a small Puritan village gets through sin and the way it took
over their lives in The Scarlet Letter. Light and dark imagery, alluding to the larger conflict between
good and evil, is present throughout the novel in the characters of Hester Prynne, Reverend Arthur
Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth. Hester Prynne was a woman who sinned against the Puritan
way, yet got through it and was able to live a life in which her daughter learned how to be civilized
and respectable. The stigma was gone, Hester heaved a long deep sigh in which the burden of shame
and anguish departed from her spirit (Hawthorne 182). Hester was going through the sin that took over
her life and as a result, she finally decided to tell her village that Dimmesdale was Pearl s father. As
she took the A off her bosom, the sin was freed. She finally felt free from what defined her life.
Raising Pearl made Hester feel as she had a purpose and was doing a good act in life. On

Count the Cost is a Collaborative Effort to Fight the War...
Count the Costs is a collaborative project between a range of organisations that, while representing a
diverse range of expertise and viewpoints, share a desire to reduce the unintended costs of the war on
drugs. The Count the Costs project aims to highlight the negative impacts of the war on drugs in seven
key policy areas: Development and Security; Public health; Human Rights; Stigma and
Discrimination; Crime; The Environment; and Economics. The project calls upon world leaders and
UN agencies to quantify the unintended negative consequences of the current approach to drugs, and
assess the potential costs and benefits of alternative approaches. (Count the Costs, 2012)
Outlining the Problem
In 2008, the Executive Director of UNODC, Antonio Maria Costa, affirmed there is indeed a spirit of
reform in the air, to make the conventions fit for purpose and adapt them to the reality on the ground
that is considerably different to the time they were drafted. With the multilateral machinery to adapt
the conventions already available, all we need is: first, a renewed commitment to the principles of
multilateralism and shared responsibility; second, a commitment to base our reform on empirical
evidence and not ideology; and thirdly, to put in place concrete actions that support the above, going
beyond mere rhetoric and pronouncement . (UNODC, 2008)
There has been an increasing sentiment of discontent within the international community about the
ineffectiveness of global drug

Donna s Story Case Study
Part 4: Using Donna s Story, develop a discussion about child welfare.
When looking at Donna s story, one must analyze how the child welfare system and government failed
to help Donna as a child and young adult. In this part of the paper, I will also be analyzing her story
from an Aboriginal perspective. As mentioned previously, Donna might have social work involvement
in her life because someone has reported her, as a parent, to the government. In this case, the rights of
Donna are secondary to the rights of her children, and a social worker must work in the best interest of
the children as mandated by legislation. From a child protection stance, the social worker, on limited
government resources and with a heavy caseload, will put the children s ... Show more content on

I am pretty sure I watched this film before in an Aboriginal studies class in my first semester of
university, before I taken a women s studies class. Looking back, I am so proud of what I have learned
and the skills I will take to my social work practice. The first time I watched this, I felt compassion for
Donna and understood the plight of Aboriginal peoples, but did not have the vocabulary of methods of
articulating and making sense of what I saw. I have really enjoyed this class because it has taken all of
the information I have studied in other classes and reanalyzed it with a social work lens, making it
very practicum for the next stages of my career. I now am able to talk about the similarities and
differences of approaches and where it is best to apply aspects of each. Particularly, I feel drawn to an
anti oppressive, structural approach that takes the whole person into consideration but also attempts to
create larger social change. As I enter practice, Donna s Story has helped me keep in mind that my
actions as a social worker will have great impacts on people and communities and I need to be aware
of my role, especially when in a position of social control. Moreover, Donna herself has really
impacted me as well; I am inspired to look for strengths and resiliency in my future clients and to be

The Veil Of Lies On The Book Cover
A boy wandered and he came across the grapefruit tree. It was a journey of self acceptance, the
uncertainty of faith, and the crumbling American state of mind. She sang of heartache and sacrifice in
the name of god. She sang of identity. Half orange, half Pomelo, she said. Just as the boy was half
Hawaiian, half Haole, they were so sure of who they were. Yet unknowing to what it means, and to
where the boy belongs. We are all on a visual journey to our true selves, and every song and painting,
every friend every enemy, another brick on the path; another thistle in the bush. Ours is a visceral
journey, and some would compare life and it s relation to the living as to the swelling of a wave and it

Sacrificing my truth for the lie that I was willing to hold within myself in the confines of this skeletal
prison long past when this body has taken it s last breath. I find comfort in confiding in other s, my

lone space capsule is carrying a body whose soul is long gone by now, whose body has been lifeless
for what seemed to be eternities. The capsule has been hurtling through space, and it now approaches
the end of its journey. A black hole sings forebodingly at the metal casing of the astronaut s tomb. The
atoms of his coffin rattle at the prospect of the infinite darkness, the cells of his body, although long
dead, weep at the visions of coming infinite darkness, the shell of his crypt vibrates with unrequited
love. What lies beyond our journey is unknown, and nothing can stop the influence of gravity and the
inevitability of the passage of time. We can only begin to understand what life means to us, and by
then we are dead. Between the infinite darkness and our journey from the uterus, we

Essay swing kids
When three friends are pressured by the government and each other, what choices will they make to
strengthen or weaken their friendship? When people are pressured into things, does the character
change? Is it a good or bad way. In the movie Swing Kids Peter, Thomas, and Aarvid made choices
that reflect the strengths and weaknesses of their friendship.
Peter is almost the head of there little group, and the choices he makes determines what everyone else
thinks and does. For example, Peter is sent into the HJ s because of his bad behavior and not because
he wants to join. He is an individual and does not do what everyone else tells him to do just like all the

Thomas cannot remain loyal to his friends or even his own family who is closer than his friends. This
shows that he would rather go with the crowd than rather trying to be an individual like Peter. In
addition, at the end of the Movie Thomas beats up Peter because he was dancing as a Swing Kid. If
Thomas was a true friend he would have just told him to leave and nothing would have happened but
he just had to fight him. Thomas joined the HJ because of Peter but Thomas and Peter thought two
different ways and they each went there separate ways also. As soon as Thomas joined the HJ s his
look on everything changed dramatically but Peters look did not change it just made them grow
farther apart.
Aarvid is a person who speaks his mind and always tries to persuade people to think what he thinks is
true. For example, he did not like that Thomas and Peter were in the HJ, and could not understand
why they were in it. He should have listened to Peter when he told Aarvid that he had to join, Aarvid
still thought that Peter and Thomas wanted to join on there own. He was also closed minded and
would not listen to Peter even though he stuck up for him. In addition, when Aarvid comits suicide he
takes an easy way out of things instead of standing up for what he thought was right. Aarvid should
have stood up to the government and told them exactly what he thought. Aarvid, Thomas, and Peter
should have tried to stay together even through

Wuthering Heights Justice Quotes
In the novel by Emily Bronte, Wuthering Heights, one of the main characters, named Heathcliff
Earnshaw, is in search for justice and vengeance throughout his whole life. First, Heathcliff wants
justice by mistreating his brother s son the way he mistreated when they were children. Also he
searches justice by destroying his lover s husband and taking Thrushcross Grange as his property.
Furthermore, it is noticeable that Heathcliff s perspective of justice is actually revenge.
Although Hindley s son, Hareton, was not guilty for the way his father treated Heathcliff, he still took
his anger into the little child. After Mr. Earnshaw s death, Hindley degraded Heathcliff by making him
a servant just because he had always been their father s favorite

Badges of Trade
BADGES OF TRADE
Profit seeking motive
When a person enters into a transaction, we need to identify whether there is a profit seeking motive.
It is not the existence of a profit that is important, it is the motive to earn one. However, the ZRA will
really be interested in this issue if a profit has actually been earned, because then they have something
to tax. A Taxpayer may argue that they are trading in order to utilize a loss to reduce their Tax bill. The
taxpayer must however, demonstrate the motive rather than the existence of profit to establish that a
trade is being carried on.
Note:
Intention to trade clearly constitutes trading. Intention to make a profit may not necessarily be so.
In IRC Vs Reinhold (1953) the Tax payer bought ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Cape Brandy Syndicate Vs IRC (1921), three individuals in the wine trade bought 10,000 gallons of
South African Brandy. This was blended, bottled and sold to over 100 separate buyers over a period of
about 18 months. They were held to be trading. Per Rowlatt. J. They had ...bought it with a view to
transport it, with a view to modify its character by skilful manipulation, by blending with a view to
alter...
In IRC Vs Livingstone (1972), a syndicate purchased a cargo vessel with a view to converting it into a
steam drifter and selling it at a profit. They had never previously done this, but they were held to be
trading!
Circumstances giving rise to the Realization
If a taxpayer sells an asset in order to raise money to help solve some financial problems it will be
difficult to prove that he is carrying on a trade. Incidentally, there have been few cases on this point.
In Page Vs Pogson (1954) the taxpayer built a house for himself and sold it six months later after
completion. He then built another one but had to sell it when his employment moved to another part of
the Country. He was held to be trading by the Commissioners of Taxes.
In addition to the six badges of trade there additional factors which have to be taken into account.
These are:
Taxpayer s other circumstances
If other circumstances of a taxpayer indicate the existence of a trade then even the current transaction
is likely to be interpreted as an indication

Mao Cultural Revolution
A. Plan of Investigation
In 1966, Mao mobilized the Chinese youth to initiate the Cultural Revolution , a violent process
eliminating old Chinese culture, customs, thoughts and habits, purging counter revolutionary party
members, and heightening Mao s personality cult. I will summarize evidence collected from
textbooks, official documents, biographies and eyewitness reports about the events between 1959 and
1966. I will describe the failure of the Great Leap Forward, Mao s resignation as president, his power
struggle with Liu Shoaqi and Deng Xiaoping and the propagating of his personality cult. Then I will

The people s faith in the government was partially restored; Liu s and Deng s popularity grew.
Furthermore, at the Conference of 7000 in 1964, instead of supporting Mao, Liu gave a speech
suggesting that the CCP was to blame for the economic failures and forced Mao into some half

Mao.
2. Establishment of the personality cult
Mao s lack of public appearances after 1958 had damaged his image and his authority. Since 1963, the
Little Red book ( Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse tung ), compiling Mao s statements on his
views and ideology, had been a standard Chinese text, and his personality cult was systematically
fostered by Lin Biao , his faithful Minister of Defence, using various forms of propaganda and giving
him popular titles such as The red sun rising in the East . Mao re entered public life on 16 July 1966
with an appearance of him swimming in the Yangtze River, to promote his strength. He frenzied the
admiration of the Chinese youth, which he was hoping to mobilize for revolutionary purposes.

My Sacagawea Experience
Sacagawea By: Brooke I am Sacagawea and I am going to tell you a little about my lifetime. I was
born in 1788. As a child, I was a happy person, but when I was 12 I got captured. I left my family and
I was so sad. I became a slave and my life was miserable. Then I got sold to Toussaint Charbonneau.
He made me marry him. I didn t want to but I had to. I stayed with my husband. I liked to have an
adventure in my life and was brave, so I kind of was like my husband. I didn t like to just sit around I
liked to move around and face people. That is me as a child and what I am like on the inside. By that

other best part about the expedition was when I had my first child! I still went on with the expedition

but I faced it and was fine. My son also got sick, but we helped him and he got better. I also had a

Explain How Different Types of Transitions Can Affect...
There are many different types of transitions during life between the ages of 0 19. Some are common,
happening to most, if not all children. Others are less common, happening to fewer (a minority)
children. All changes can affect children and young people in some way. If children are able to be
given the opportunity to ask questions, and discuss changes and events then this could help lessen any
anxieties and negative effects on their development. Four main types of transitions are below. 1.
Emotional Transitions. Obviously children s emotions are affected by their relationships and personal
experiences, if their main relationships are unsettled then they will be wary of forming future trusting
relationships with adults, e.g. if ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even with discussion, young people may not actually want to move, they could regress i.e. revert to
bedwetting after the move, until they settle in. They could become sullen or argumentative (after all,
you moved even though they didn t want to!), tearful, emotional, angry and resentful or a mixture of
some/all of these. If things can be discussed before, they may actually move viewing it all as a new
chapter, huge adventure and really exciting event. Things such as changing activities in class can also
be explained before hand, at the start of the session to lessen the arguments, or sulks when an
absorbed child is asked to change what they are doing! 3. Intellectual Transitions. Intellectual
transitions include changes such as starting primary school, moving classes, key stages or up to
secondary school. Also leaving school and moving on to further education or employment. These can
all be very stressful changes for some pupils, others however, may be more than ready for the next big
step in their educational lives. Obviously, these transitions are all planned, and known about in
advance so parents and teachers are able to discuss any issue, and provide support to nervous children.
Our primary school has policies and procedures to make each stage less nerve wracking for children.

Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are, In the Night...
Maurice Sendak s Where the Wild Things Are, In the Night Kitchen, and Outside Over There
The three titles of Maurice Sendak s famous picture book trilogy, Where the Wild Things Are, In the
Night Kitchen, and Outside Over There, name what Judith Butler calls zones of uninhabitability,
places of abjection that form the borders of the self as both its constitutive outside and its intimate
interior. These are dangerous places in the geography of childhood, places where the child s very life
and sense of self is threatened. More frightening still, they are present places, places that exist in the
same time that the child inhabits, rather than the once upon a mythical time of fairy tales and legends.
Hence they are places that beckon the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, I would not go so far as other critics have done in claiming that this developmental narrative
is the journey of a single everychild. That is abject logic indeed, since it frames itself as a monolithic
story of what constitutes a clean and proper childhood, absent particularities. No, Sendak s characters
are individuals who experience their bodies, their drives, and their desires as their own; their
boundaries and borderlands are distinctly personal landscapes wherein they act their own particular
corporeal dramas. Nor is the lesson regarding the abject monolithic across the trilogy. Sendak s vision
in the first two books involves more than a once for all setting of the boundaries between self and
other; the children learn the possibilities and limits of embracing alterity within themselves, or at least
of mapping the space of and for otherness as part of their own psychic landscape. But in the third and
final book, the book that signaled the end of Sendak s career as a children s book writer and illustrator
and the beginning of his work in theater, Ida s encounter with abjection is more profound, less
jubilant, and more in keeping with the general logic of abjection under which the adult subject is
constituted.
In the first book, Where the Wild Things Are, Max wants to be a wild thing, that is, he wants to live
his body in a raw, socially unacceptable way. His mother is at first complicit

Looking out the window into space was truly mesmerizing. Seeing the infinite darkness with specs of

Stereotypes In Language Arts
Language arts Essay
The definition of stereotype is a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular
type of person or thing. Many characters are stereotyped in this novel because of the image of god and
the beliefs of blasphemies. Joseph is stereotyped very well, some examples are cold hearted, strong
willed and bad tempered. Joseph is David s father, is the priest of the town, he is strongly against
blasphemies.
Cold hearted describes Joseph as a very abusive father and has no sympathy for his son David. When
Sophie s secret was let out David had a huge secret to hold for everyone mainly against his father who
is against blasphemies, later in the story Sophie s 6 toes secret gets let out and her family leaves town,
David arrives late that night depressed that his friend left and Joseph questions David why he was out
and what s going on. David responds as I don t know trying to hide Sophie s secret his father then
beats David until he speaks and lets out Sophie s secret. Joseph is the religious leader of the town so
he has the final say in life or death for people, which is also cold hearted. I believe cold hearted

towards blasphemies and describes them as inhuman, so anything wishing close to be one would

Effects Of Subpopulation On Polar Bears
A primary response to change is the ability of individuals to modify their behavior patterns relation to
spatial distribution and phenological shifts. However, for species living in environmental extremes,
they have little opportunity to regulate the climate warming changes to their physical environment and
must display plasticity in their key behaviors to cope with the changes. Polar bears face the dilemma
of remaining with ice that has retreated past biologically productive shallow waters or to move away
from the retreating sea ice to the shore which can lead to inadequate resources and exposure to risk
factors. There was an investigation on polar bears from Alaska s southern Beaufort Sea (SB)

Fahrenheit 451 Language Analysis
In Fahrenheit 451 a character by the name of Montag has a job to burn books. Later in the story it gets
to him, why he s burning books in the first place. This eventually sparks his curiosity for reading
books and later his downfall in the end of the novel. Ray Bradbury s Fahrenheit 451 the overall plot
was to censure every book so that they could never cause anymore commotion and domestic actions
ever again. In Bradbury s novel, he uses tone in several ways to illustrate censorship is inappropriate
through his use of charged words, his use of historical symbols, and his ability to reflect the ideas of
historical positive role models. Bradbury s uses charged words to state his view of negative censorship
through adjectives. For example, (excerpt 1). It was a special pleasure to burn to see things eaten, to
see things blackened and changed. He uses these words here to show how Montag enjoys to burn
books and how he feels like he s helping the cause. Montag s stance changes in the second excerpt
when he starts to feel alone for example, We need not to be let alone. We need to be really bothered
once in a while. (excerpt 2). Montag wants his wife and him to be bothered because they re not
bothered enough. Bradbury shows tone through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Consequences of Eating from the Tree of Knowledge Essay
The purpose of this study will be to examine the specific fulfillment of the consequences contained in
the warning against eating of the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Before we look at that
fulfillment, it will be beneficial to note the specifics of the promise.
THE PROMISE OF DEATH
The promise seems to be quite clear as God tells Adam and Eve, in the day that you eat from it you
will surely die (Genesis 2:17). The Hebrew text literally says, dying, you will die (tWmT tAm),
though we should understand this, not as speaking of two deaths, but as a Hebraic figure of speech
indicating the certainty of that which is promised. The translators of the NAS capture this idea when
they render it, You will surely die.
Not only is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He does this because it is very evident in the subsequent chapter that when Adam and Eve ate of the
forbidden fruit, they did not immediately fall down and die. Instead we read in Genesis 5 how they
continued to live what seems to have been long lives. We are not told this in the case of Eve, but we
read of Adam living to an advanced old age of 930 years.
This brings us to the crux of our problem. It is a problem between promise and fulfillment. The
promise from God was that eating would lead to death on that very day. The fulfillment as recorded in
Genesis 3 5 sees physical death taking place only after a very long period of many hundreds of years.
The question of how we are to reconcile the difference between the promise and the fulfillment has
brought forth a variety of interpretations..
One can understand the temptation to explain away this seeming contradiction by reinterpreting the
promise of death as referring only to spiritual death. But does this particular passage support or even
allow such an interpretation? When we look into Genesis 4 and 5, each of the many references to
death refer to physical death. Cain kills Abel and is subsequently afraid that someone will find him
and kill him. Lamech kills a young man and writes a song to boast of the fact. Throughout the lengthy
genealogy of Genesis 5, we hear the constant refrain, And he died, and we understand each of these
references to speak of physical death. Nor does

Difference Between Montessori And Steiner
When comparing and contrasting two teaching approaches, it is important to remember that although
there is a myriad of different types i.e. Froebel, Montessori, Steiner etc., they all possess similarities
and differences. Each individual approach has many fascinating points, however the Montessori and
Steiner approach will be discussed in this essay. Montessori s approach is based on the understanding
that children have an inborn capacity to acquire information and to teach themselves when placed in
an environment that allows freedom and independence to work at their own pace (Miller, 2010, p.71).
Whereas Steiner s approach is based on the understanding that children learn primarily through
imitation and whatever is happening around them from ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Montessori s teaching approach aims to develop all aspects of the child mentally and socially (Pound,
2012). Montessori cautioned teachers to remember that children need to be allowed to do basic tasks
to learn for themselves (Mooney, 2000, p.28). The role of the teacher in a Montessori setting is mainly
observation of the child, encouragement, preparation of the environment, leadership, fostering the
child s independence (Mooney, 2000, p.29), and keeping a complex and delicate balance between each
role. (Miller, 2010, p.79). Both theorists acknowledged that children learn best by doing and through
repetition of tasks (Mooney, 2000, p.29). Large blocks of time for free work and play, should be
scheduled as this was part of the Montessori legacy, this can also be seen in Steiner settings. (Pound,
2012). The teacher should also give children responsibility for keeping the setting space clean and tidy
and allow the children to structure their own play. (Mooney, 2000, p.29). Steiner s role of the teacher
is comparable. Steiner wanted to create an education which gave children clarity of thought,
sensitivity of feeling and strength of will (Pound 2012, p28). Like Montessori the role of the teacher is
all about observation, the teacher needs to be both interested and observational of the child s basic
needs to fully develop the child both

Satire In A Modest Proposal By Jonathan Swift
There s a Black Friday sale on babies this weekend; eat up! Satire can point out societal inadequacy
and ridicule political policies in a way that is humorous in its absurdity while masking its true intent.
In A Modest Proposal, Jonathan Swift uses exaggeration and irony to draw attention to the
meaningless lives of the Irish poor under English rule. Thus, giving his work a wider audience while
also serving as a furtherment of Swift s typical derisiveness. A Modest Proposal comments on the
harm caused by the Declaratory Act of 1720, an act that allowed Great Britain s parliament to legislate
over Ireland with no input from the Irish House of Lords, leaving Ireland in severe economic distress.
Swift contrasts his calm, yet harsh criticism of English politics and the rich upper class with his own
passionate beliefs. Swift s satiric pamphlet was not only effective at the time it was published but also
in modernity; it remains one of the most well known satiric works in literature today. One of the
reasons Swift s writing was so popular was because he wrote in a way people were familiar. A Modest
Proposal was written as a pamphlet with the same title common of pamphlets at the time (Williams
51). Before reading through Swift s proposal the work would seem to be ordinary and tired. Swift
keeps with the familiarity of the people in his style. Swift masks his satire with a style reminiscent of
metaphysical poetry, a style popular in the late 1600s. While A Modest Proposal undoubtedly is not a
poem, it mimics the main themes of metaphysical poetry. This style starts and remains a complex
work through its entirety, relying heavily on the use of paradox and violence. These cannot be
overlooked in Swift s piece; his major plot is killing and eating infants. What separates both
metaphysical poetry and Swift s work from other works is its argumentative stance. Most pamphlets
of the time would simply offer a humble solution while Swift fights not only with the audience but
with himself to embed his main purpose into the audience s brain. When reading metaphysical poetry,
the reader is trained to think thoroughly about what is offered in the piece and moreover, the author s
true intent. In keeping with this style, Swift

Studies have also found that dropping out is more likely to occur among students from single parent
families and students with an older sibling who has already dropped out than among counterparts
without these characteristics. Other aspects of a student s home life such as level of parental
involvement and support, parent s educational expectations, parent s attitudes about school, and
stability of the family environment can also influence a youth s decision to stay in school. For
example, results from the NCES study found that students whose parents were not actively involved in
the student s school, whose parents infrequently talked to them about school related matters, or whose
parents held low expectations for their child s future educational achievement were more likely to
drop out.
Another reason why a lot of students drop out of school is simply because they don t like it. High
school, through its control over many decisions that are made for students, still seems to be restrictive.
Many aspects of a student s life are pre set and cannot be changed by the student to fit his needs. For
example, a student s time schedule is set every year. Every student must go the same amount of hours
every year. In most cases, school is from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. every day, whether he or she actually
needs all the time or not. Students have to spend more time in some filler classes that they think they

U.s. Federal Campaign Finance Reform Proposal
One main issue raised by presidential hopefuls revolves around campaign money received by
candidates, donated by multi million dollar corporations. Although it remains illegal for these
corporations to directly donate large sums of money to political campaigns and political parties, the
fear that political and judicial figures in the American political systems are being bought out by these
affluent corporations still worries an inordinate amount of people in the United States. In 2009, the
Supreme Court ruled in Citizens United v. FEC whether these wealthy companies had the

However, it is not money they seek; rather favors and special privileges earned by donating the

corporation, for instance, may have inspectors and officials turn a blind eye to human and workers
rights violations. Likewise, similar campaign finance proposals began to start limiting the regulation
of campaign financing, however, the next notable campaign act Congress enacted did not happen until
the latter portion of the 20th century.
Before 1971, political figures still had leeway in the financing of their campaigns. However, Congress
tightened down on campaign financing, and began to restrict the permissible activities candidates
could expedite in, beginning in 1971. The first component of the bill demanded that all candidates

could, for the most part, receive and spend contributed campaign money any way they seemed fit for
the success of their campaigns, though previous acts had heightened the stipulations of this money.
Furthermore, this act enacted restrictions on the permissible amounts of money candidates could

A Young Woman s Fantasy in The Turn of the Screw Essay
A Young Woman s Fantasy in The Turn of the Screw
The Turn of the Screw, by Henry James, is an odd story about a young woman who, leaving her small
country home for the first time, takes a job as a governess in a wealthy household. Shortly after her
arrival, she begins to suffer from insomnia and fancies that she sees ghosts roaming about the grounds.
James is a master story teller and, at times, the complexities of the story make it difficult to follow.
The Turn of the Screw is a story within a story, the tale of the governess being read aloud as a ghost
story among friends. Harold C. Goddard wrote a fascinating piece of criticism entitled A Pre Freudian

all her hopes of a relationship are unrealistic, as there is a vast difference in class between herself and

never trouble him (6). So we see that she is never to communicate with the object of her affections
again. At the end of her interview, after she agreed to these stipulations, we are told that when ...he
held her hand, thanking her for the sacrifice, she already felt rewarded (6). This description proves that
the new governess is in love with her employer. Later in the book, during her first encounter with the

a man in the tower was that it was not the person [she] had precipitately supposed it would be (15). It
is clear that she was hoping it would be the man from Harley Street.
According to Goddard s theory, the ghosts of Peter Quint and Miss Jessel are images conjured up in
the mind of the unstable, young governess. Goddard addresses this issue accordingly. To the reader,
this may seem like a strange notion because the governess is able to give a description of the ghosts
that seems eerily accurate, even though she never saw them before. In the case of Peter Quint, the only

all have similar characteristics, not necessarily racial but largely behavioral. To address this, the
United States Government and the Transportation Security Administration should allow profiling in
airport security throughout the country. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some experts view racial profiling as a disgrace to our civil liberties. Professor of law, Patricia J.
Williams claims that racial profiling violates our personal civil liberties and that it cannot prove itself
effective against terrorists. She argues that terrorists will do whatever it takes to ensure they cannot be
classified physically as terrorists by changing their appearance (172). As we saw in the attacks on
September 11, 2001, the terrorists modified their appearance to blend in with the average American
citizen. The New York City police commissioner, Raymond Kelly, noted Look at the 9/11 hijackers.
They came here. They shaved. They went to topless bars. They wanted to blend in. They wanted to
look like they were a part of the American dream... (Harcourt 3) That demonstrates a clear examples
of how racial profiling does not work effectively by itself. While the suspect s race may play part in
why they are detained, it should not be the reason security officers do so. Behavioral profiling may be
the solution to the problem of protecting civil liberties and successfully securing airports. Behavioral
profiling uses mostly psychological and behavioral traits in detecting abnormal demeanors. Trained
professionals observe crowds of people and watch for certain tendencies with their body language. A
person s body language can set off many red

Discussion Of Issue And Related Theory
Discussion of Issue and Related Theory Practicing medicine in the rural areas may be challenging.
Little is known if the primary care providers in the rural areas are willing to address mental health
issues on a regular basis. Addressing mental health can be as simple as completing a simple mental
health assessment during the primary care visit to setting up an area in the office to offer
telepsychiatry, e mental health services or adding a psychiatric provider to practice for hallway
consults to make this available. Opportunities can be created to assist individuals to address their
mental health care on a regular bases to prevent missing follow up appointments and allow the
specialist to address health care needs. The number of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the rural areas primary care providers may be the key for ensuring mental health services is
accessible for residents. Florence Nightingale is considered one of the first nursing theorists. Even
though she never formally formulated a theory, her scholarly writings and written opinions on
environmental manipulation for the promotion of health is well known to anyone studying nursing.
Nightingale combined spirituality with nursing to give her patients the best possible care possible.
Florence Nightingale began following her mother when she made rounds to the poor areas within their
communities (Heggae, 2013). She later professed receiving a call to serve others. As part of her
Environmental Model, she has thirteen essential points that must be addressed to promote wellness
amongst the sick (Butts Rich, 2011). These points are continually addressed in today s nursing practice
during initial assessment and ongoing assessment. Florence Nightingale points focuses on cleanliness,
food, shelter, observation, and documentation. According to Heggae (2013), Nightingale focused on
nurses being very observant and the ability to document accurately. Florence Nightingale was adamant
in nurses being willing to challenge social policies that will impede one s ability to heal (Heggae,
2013). Nightingale believed that nurses must have the ability to manipulate the physical and social
factors that affect health and illness so as to enhance patient recovery (Butts Rich,

Hospice And End Of Life Care
Hospice and End of Life Care
What is Hospice? Hospice is compassionate care provided to patients facing terminal illness or illness
for which there is no cure. These patients are diagnosed with an illness from which they will never
recover and usually have a life prognosis of six months or less (Hospice Foundation of America,
2014). The goal of hospice care is improving quality of life and managing the symptoms of disease
and the dying process. The care hospice offers is focused on pain management and emotional and
spiritual support for both the patient and family (National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization,
2012). Hospice care can be provided in many different settings, often the patient s own home. Hospice
care can also be provided in hospitals, nursing homes, long term care facilities and free standing
hospice centers and is available to patients of all ages (NHPCO, 2012). A patient receiving care in a
hospice program has a team of healthcare individuals that can consist of the patients own physician,
nurses, home health aides, clergy, social workers, and speech and physical therapists (NHPCO, 2012).
Usually, a care plan is developed by the hospice team and care of the patient is provided by family
members with the support of the hospice staff (NHPCO, 2012). Nurses make regular visits to the
patient and family and are on call 24/7. Once enrolled in a hospice program hospice covers everything
that will be needed to care for you, from medications to manage pain to

  • 2. The Giver Comparison To A Dystopian Society Two Become One Dystopia contains a little utopia, and every utopia contains a little dystopia. It s very true , a thought by Margaret Atwood, a canadian novelist, stating that in every society, utopian and dystopian qualities are seen. Margaret brings to account the controversy of how our world is a dystopia and utopia. There is always an illusion of a utopia and dystopia in the world, without those illusions the world would not contain the beauty it is today. In both societies there are similar and different aspects to a dystopia and utopian world at the cause of suicide, and the abundance of individuality. Living in today s society is similar to a dystopian world as a result of immense mental pain causing suicide. It is a way of personal freedom and self expression. Individuality in today s society allows anyone to choose their own importance in today s world. Diversity is celebrated and helps [encourage] ordinary people to realize their potential and their inner depths. (Koch 16). Jonas believes that without choices life is very dull while society today has the individual freedom to express our emotion. • 3. Theme Of Nature In The Scarlet Letter Tedra Vrbka SLEssay English 11 Period 4 16 November 2017 Passion and Hatred In our nature, however, there is a provision, alike marvellous and merciful, that the sufferer should never know the intensity of what he endures by its present torture, but chiefly by the pang that rankles after it (Hawthorne 52). As Hester Prynne, the main character, is put through hardships from her sinful nature, she faces the rough times sin gave her and the way she endures the lives of the people closest to her. Nathaniel Hawthorne explains how a small Puritan village gets through sin and the way it took over their lives in The Scarlet Letter. Light and dark imagery, alluding to the larger conflict between good and evil, is present throughout the novel in the characters of Hester Prynne, Reverend Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth. Hester Prynne was a woman who sinned against the Puritan way, yet got through it and was able to live a life in which her daughter learned how to be civilized and respectable. The stigma was gone, Hester heaved a long deep sigh in which the burden of shame and anguish departed from her spirit (Hawthorne 182). Hester was going through the sin that took over her life and as a result, she finally decided to tell her village that Dimmesdale was Pearl s father. As she took the A off her bosom, the sin was freed. She finally felt free from what defined her life. Raising Pearl made Hester feel as she had a purpose and was doing a good act in life. On ... Count the Costs is a collaborative project between a range of organisations that, while representing a diverse range of expertise and viewpoints, share a desire to reduce the unintended costs of the war on drugs. The Count the Costs project aims to highlight the negative impacts of the war on drugs in seven key policy areas: Development and Security; Public health; Human Rights; Stigma and Discrimination; Crime; The Environment; and Economics. The project calls upon world leaders and UN agencies to quantify the unintended negative consequences of the current approach to drugs, and assess the potential costs and benefits of alternative approaches. (Count the Costs, 2012) Outlining the Problem In 2008, the Executive Director of UNODC, Antonio Maria Costa, affirmed there is indeed a spirit of reform in the air, to make the conventions fit for purpose and adapt them to the reality on the ground that is considerably different to the time they were drafted. With the multilateral machinery to adapt the conventions already available, all we need is: first, a renewed commitment to the principles of multilateralism and shared responsibility; second, a commitment to base our reform on empirical evidence and not ideology; and thirdly, to put in place concrete actions that support the above, going beyond mere rhetoric and pronouncement . (UNODC, 2008) There has been an increasing sentiment of discontent within the international community about the ineffectiveness of global drug ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When looking at Donna s story, one must analyze how the child welfare system and government failed to help Donna as a child and young adult. In this part of the paper, I will also be analyzing her story from an Aboriginal perspective. As mentioned previously, Donna might have social work involvement in her life because someone has reported her, as a parent, to the government. In this case, the rights of Donna are secondary to the rights of her children, and a social worker must work in the best interest of the children as mandated by legislation. From a child protection stance, the social worker, on limited government resources and with a heavy caseload, will put the children s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I am pretty sure I watched this film before in an Aboriginal studies class in my first semester of university, before I taken a women s studies class. Looking back, I am so proud of what I have learned and the skills I will take to my social work practice. The first time I watched this, I felt compassion for Donna and understood the plight of Aboriginal peoples, but did not have the vocabulary of methods of articulating and making sense of what I saw. I have really enjoyed this class because it has taken all of the information I have studied in other classes and reanalyzed it with a social work lens, making it very practicum for the next stages of my career. I now am able to talk about the similarities and differences of approaches and where it is best to apply aspects of each. Particularly, I feel drawn to an anti oppressive, structural approach that takes the whole person into consideration but also attempts to create larger social change. As I enter practice, Donna s Story has helped me keep in mind that my actions as a social worker will have great impacts on people and communities and I need to be aware of my role, especially when in a position of social control. Moreover, Donna herself has really impacted me as well; I am inspired to look for strengths and resiliency in my future clients and to be able to learn from ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Incidentally, there have been few cases on this point. In Page Vs Pogson (1954) the taxpayer built a house for himself and sold it six months later after completion. He then built another one but had to sell it when his employment moved to another part of the Country. He was held to be trading by the Commissioners of Taxes. • 16. Explain How Different Types of Transitions Can Affect... There are many different types of transitions during life between the ages of 0 19. Some are common, happening to most, if not all children. Others are less common, happening to fewer (a minority) children. All changes can affect children and young people in some way. If children are able to be given the opportunity to ask questions, and discuss changes and events then this could help lessen any anxieties and negative effects on their development. Four main types of transitions are below. 1. Emotional Transitions. Obviously children s emotions are affected by their relationships and personal experiences, if their main relationships are unsettled then they will be wary of forming future trusting relationships with adults, e.g. if ... They could become sullen or argumentative (after all, you moved even though they didn t want to!), tearful, emotional, angry and resentful or a mixture of some/all of these. If things can be discussed before, they may actually move viewing it all as a new chapter, huge adventure and really exciting event. Things such as changing activities in class can also be explained before hand, at the start of the session to lessen the arguments, or sulks when an absorbed child is asked to change what they are doing! 3. Maurice Sendak s Where the Wild Things Are, In the Night Kitchen, and Outside Over There The three titles of Maurice Sendak s famous picture book trilogy, Where the Wild Things Are, In the Night Kitchen, and Outside Over There, name what Judith Butler calls zones of uninhabitability, places of abjection that form the borders of the self as both its constitutive outside and its intimate interior. These are dangerous places in the geography of childhood, places where the child s very life and sense of self is threatened. However, I would not go so far as other critics have done in claiming that this developmental narrative is the journey of a single everychild. That is abject logic indeed, since it frames itself as a monolithic story of what constitutes a clean and proper childhood, absent particularities. No, Sendak s characters are individuals who experience their bodies, their drives, and their desires as their own; their boundaries and borderlands are distinctly personal landscapes wherein they act their own particular corporeal dramas. Nor is the lesson regarding the abject monolithic across the trilogy. Sendak s vision in the first two books involves more than a once for all setting of the boundaries between self and other; the children learn the possibilities and limits of embracing alterity within themselves, or at least of mapping the space of and for otherness as part of their own psychic landscape. But in the third and final book, the book that signaled the end of Sendak s career as a children s book writer and illustrator and the beginning of his work in theater, Ida s encounter with abjection is more profound, less jubilant, and more in keeping with the general logic of abjection under which the adult subject is constituted. Ray Bradbury s Fahrenheit 451 the overall plot was to censure every book so that they could never cause anymore commotion and domestic actions ever again. Bradbury s uses charged words to state his view of negative censorship through adjectives. For example, (excerpt 1). THE PROMISE OF DEATH The promise seems to be quite clear as God tells Adam and Eve, in the day that you eat from it you will surely die (Genesis 2:17). The Hebrew text literally says, dying, you will die (tWmT tAm), though we should understand this, not as speaking of two deaths, but as a Hebraic figure of speech indicating the certainty of that which is promised. Instead we read in Genesis 5 how they continued to live what seems to have been long lives. We are not told this in the case of Eve, but we read of Adam living to an advanced old age of 930 years. This brings us to the crux of our problem. It is a problem between promise and fulfillment. The promise from God was that eating would lead to death on that very day. The fulfillment as recorded in Genesis 3 5 sees physical death taking place only after a very long period of many hundreds of years. The question of how we are to reconcile the difference between the promise and the fulfillment has brought forth a variety of interpretations.. One can understand the temptation to explain away this seeming contradiction by reinterpreting the promise of death as referring only to spiritual death. But does this particular passage support or even allow such an interpretation? When we look into Genesis 4 and 5, each of the many references to death refer to physical death. Cain kills Abel and is subsequently afraid that someone will find him and kill him. Lamech kills a young man and writes a song to boast of the fact. Each individual approach has many fascinating points, however the Montessori and Steiner approach will be discussed in this essay. Montessori s approach is based on the understanding that children have an inborn capacity to acquire information and to teach themselves when placed in an environment that allows freedom and independence to work at their own pace (Miller, 2010, p.71). Montessori s teaching approach aims to develop all aspects of the child mentally and socially (Pound, 2012). Montessori cautioned teachers to remember that children need to be allowed to do basic tasks to learn for themselves (Mooney, 2000, p.28). The role of the teacher in a Montessori setting is mainly observation of the child, encouragement, preparation of the environment, leadership, fostering the child s independence (Mooney, 2000, p.29), and keeping a complex and delicate balance between each role. (Miller, 2010, p.79). Both theorists acknowledged that children learn best by doing and through repetition of tasks (Mooney, 2000, p.29). Large blocks of time for free work and play, should be scheduled as this was part of the Montessori legacy, this can also be seen in Steiner settings. (Pound, 2012). The teacher should also give children responsibility for keeping the setting space clean and tidy and allow the children to structure their own play. (Mooney, 2000, p.29). Steiner s role of the teacher is comparable. Steiner wanted to create an education which gave children clarity of thought, sensitivity of feeling and strength of will (Pound 2012, p28). • 32. Satire In A Modest Proposal By Jonathan Swift There s a Black Friday sale on babies this weekend; eat up! Satire can point out societal inadequacy and ridicule political policies in a way that is humorous in its absurdity while masking its true intent. In A Modest Proposal, Jonathan Swift uses exaggeration and irony to draw attention to the meaningless lives of the Irish poor under English rule. Thus, giving his work a wider audience while also serving as a furtherment of Swift s typical derisiveness. A Modest Proposal comments on the harm caused by the Declaratory Act of 1720, an act that allowed Great Britain s parliament to legislate over Ireland with no input from the Irish House of Lords, leaving Ireland in severe economic distress. Swift contrasts his calm, yet harsh criticism of English politics and the rich upper class with his own passionate beliefs. Swift s satiric pamphlet was not only effective at the time it was published but also in modernity; it remains one of the most well known satiric works in literature today. One of the reasons Swift s writing was so popular was because he wrote in a way people were familiar. A Modest Proposal was written as a pamphlet with the same title common of pamphlets at the time (Williams 51). Before reading through Swift s proposal the work would seem to be ordinary and tired. Swift keeps with the familiarity of the people in his style. Swift masks his satire with a style reminiscent of metaphysical poetry, a style popular in the late 1600s. While A Modest Proposal undoubtedly is not a poem, it mimics the main themes of metaphysical poetry. This style starts and remains a complex work through its entirety, relying heavily on the use of paradox and violence. These cannot be overlooked in Swift s piece; his major plot is killing and eating infants. What separates both metaphysical poetry and Swift s work from other works is its argumentative stance. Most pamphlets of the time would simply offer a humble solution while Swift fights not only with the audience but with himself to embed his main purpose into the audience s brain. When reading metaphysical poetry, the reader is trained to think thoroughly about what is offered in the piece and moreover, the author s true intent. In keeping with this style, Swift ... • 33. High School Dropouts Essay High School Dropouts Entering high school is the beginning of a whole new learning experience. Transitioning from middle school, high school presents more classes, students, and a bigger campus. It brings new expectations and responsibilities to each of us. High school also offers fresh chances to make new friends, try new sports and activities, and really explore who we are as individuals. The goal is to maintain good grades, score high on the SAT test, and keep a positive attitude so colleges and universities will accept you. Of course it s not as easy at sounds, but it s achievable. Studies have also found that dropping out is more likely to occur among students from single parent families and students with an older sibling who has already dropped out than among counterparts without these characteristics. Other aspects of a student s home life such as level of parental involvement and support, parent s educational expectations, parent s attitudes about school, and stability of the family environment can also influence a youth s decision to stay in school. For example, results from the NCES study found that students whose parents were not actively involved in the student s school, whose parents infrequently talked to them about school related matters, or whose parents held low expectations for their child s future educational achievement were more likely to drop out. Another reason why a lot of students drop out of school is simply because they don t like it. High school, through its control over many decisions that are made for students, still seems to be restrictive. Many aspects of a student s life are pre set and cannot be changed by the student to fit his needs. For example, a student s time schedule is set every year. Every student must go the same amount of hours every year. In most cases, school is from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. every day, whether he or she actually needs all the time or not. Students have to spend more time in some filler classes that they think they probably did not need to take but still had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Good People, by David Foster Wallace Essay David Foster Wallace s Good People, is a very touching, powerful story about a young, unwed, Christian couple facing an extremely difficult decision and the moral and religious implications that may result. As the story begins, we are allowed into the head of Lane Dean, a college student, as he sits on a park bench with his girlfriend, Sheri. Lane and Sheri find themselves faced with an unplanned pregnancy, which causes them to battle with several moral and religious dilemmas. Both of them are devout Christians who have built their moral beliefs upon God and their religious upbringing. Although torn Sheri schedules an abortion, which weighs on Lane deeply. Wallace s precise and purposeful style of language allows us to get a true feeling for Lane, our protagonist, and the terror, desperation and nervousness he feels in making a horribly difficult decision. He hated himself for sitting so frozen. He could almost visualize himself tiptoeing past something explosive. A big stupid looking tiptoe, like in a cartoon. The whole last black week had been this way and it was wrong (1) portrays the sheer terror and desperation that Lane is feeling. Wallace tells this story from a limited omniscience point of view, only allowing us into Lane s head. This point of view complements Lane s character as well as the tone of this story as it helps to set the frightened and worried mood of the story as it permits us, as readers, to experience the inner conflict and desperation that Lane is feeling. The setting, in my opinion, has hints of foreshadowing that work nicely with Lane s inner conflict. When Wallace writes [t]hey were up on a picnic table at that park by the lake, by the edge of the lake... (1) the word edge prompts a feeling that the story is on the verge of change. • 35. U.s. Federal Campaign Finance Reform Proposal One main issue raised by presidential hopefuls revolves around campaign money received by candidates, donated by multi million dollar corporations. Although it remains illegal for these corporations to directly donate large sums of money to political campaigns and political parties, the fear that political and judicial figures in the American political systems are being bought out by these affluent corporations still worries an inordinate amount of people in the United States. Likewise, similar campaign finance proposals began to start limiting the regulation of campaign financing, however, the next notable campaign act Congress enacted did not happen until the latter portion of the 20th century. Before 1971, political figures still had leeway in the financing of their campaigns. However, Congress tightened down on campaign financing, and began to restrict the permissible activities candidates could expedite in, beginning in 1971. The first component of the bill demanded that all candidates running to fully disclose their full campaign finance report (Appendix 4). Before this, candidates could, for the most part, receive and spend contributed campaign money any way they seemed fit for the success of their campaigns, though previous acts had heightened the stipulations of this money. A Young Woman s Fantasy in The Turn of the Screw Essay A Young Woman s Fantasy in The Turn of the Screw The Turn of the Screw, by Henry James, is an odd story about a young woman who, leaving her small country home for the first time, takes a job as a governess in a wealthy household. Shortly after her arrival, she begins to suffer from insomnia and fancies that she sees ghosts roaming about the grounds. James is a master story teller and, at times, the complexities of the story make it difficult to follow. According to Goddard s theory, the ghosts of Peter Quint and Miss Jessel are images conjured up in the mind of the unstable, young governess. Goddard addresses this issue accordingly. Ten different sub questions and research instruments were used to measure growth during the process of preparing for the Veterans Day Concert. Each instrument was inserted into Google Forms and delivered to each student via Google Classroom. Pre Tests were given to students during the third week of school. Post tests were given to students two weeks prior to the final performance. Scores may have been effected by possible guessing or misspelled words in the students written responses. The data is reflective of the hypothesis in the fact that sixth grade students scored low and eighth grade students scored higher on the pretests. However, on certain pretests, the seventh grade students actually scored higher than some eighth grade students. Since that September day, security measures have heightened and extra precautions are in place to prevent something of that nature from happening again. The terrorists involved in 9/11 appeared to be shockingly similar to a typical American Citizen. However, their behaviors from that week prior were alarming. Examining the terrorists who have become more prevalent in the last twenty years, there are several things in common with all of them. Their profiles all have similar characteristics, not necessarily racial but largely behavioral. Williams claims that racial profiling violates our personal civil liberties and that it cannot prove itself effective against terrorists. She argues that terrorists will do whatever it takes to ensure they cannot be classified physically as terrorists by changing their appearance (172). As we saw in the attacks on September 11, 2001, the terrorists modified their appearance to blend in with the average American citizen. The New York City police commissioner, Raymond Kelly, noted Look at the 9/11 hijackers. They came here. They shaved. They went to topless bars. They wanted to blend in.
