In its simplest possible form, spondylosis can be defined as arthritis of the spine. It is sequelae of the aging spine. Spondylosis can affect any/all regions of the spine, determining what symptoms you have. You can have spondylosis in your neck (cervical spondylosis), mid-back (thoracic spine), or low back (lumbar spondylosis).

Back pain is a common medical condition that can affect people of all ages. It can be acute, lasting a few days to a few weeks, or chronic, persisting for more than three months. Back pain can result from various causes, and it can affect different regions of the back, including the upper, middle, or lower back.
How Can Patients Leverage Chiropractic Treatment For Spinal Stenosis?Realign Spine
Spinal stenosis can significantly impact an individual's quality of life, causing pain and limiting mobility. While there are various treatment options available, chiropractic treatment has shown promise in helping patients manage their symptoms. By utilizing techniques such as spinal manipulation, chiropractors can help alleviate pressure on the spinal cord and reduce inflammation in the affected area. Additionally, chiropractic care can provide patients with valuable education on proper posture and exercises to strengthen the affected muscles.
How to Understand Back Pain

cannot truly know anything, yet according to statistics, the majority of people in the
world suffer some degree of back pain. Some people go through pain. Yet, these people
have never survived injuries. Yet others go through pain from injuries, and feel the worst.
Ironically, however, injuries are not the only cause of back pain, rather few medical
conditions, including multiple sclerosis can cause back pain. Learn more about the

Compartment syndrome,- a detailed medical study .martinshaji
Compartment syndrome is a condition that occurs when injury causes generalized painful swelling and increased pressure within a compartment to the point that blood cannot supply the muscles and nerves with oxygen and nutrients. Muscles in the forearm, lower leg and other body areas are surrounded by fibrous bands of tissues. This creates distinct compartments. The fibrous tissue is very inflexible and cannot stretch to accommodate the generalized swelling. If left untreated, muscles and nerves fail and may eventually die.

MANAGEMENT OF ATRIOVENTRICULAR CONDUCTION BLOCK.pdfJim Jacob Roy
Cardiac conduction defects can occur due to various causes.
Atrioventricular conduction blocks ( AV blocks ) are classified into 3 types.
This document describes the acute management of AV block.
Ethanol (CH3CH2OH), or beverage alcohol, is a two-carbon alcohol
that is rapidly distributed in the body and brain. Ethanol alters many
neurochemical systems and has rewarding and addictive properties. It
is the oldest recreational drug and likely contributes to more morbidity,
mortality, and public health costs than all illicit drugs combined. The
5th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(DSM-5) integrates alcohol abuse and alcohol dependence into a single
disorder called alcohol use disorder (AUD), with mild, moderate,
and severe subclassifications (American Psychiatric Association, 2013).
In the DSM-5, all types of substance abuse and dependence have been
combined into a single substance use disorder (SUD) on a continuum
from mild to severe. A diagnosis of AUD requires that at least two of
the 11 DSM-5 behaviors be present within a 12-month period (mild
AUD: 2–3 criteria; moderate AUD: 4–5 criteria; severe AUD: 6–11 criteria).
The four main behavioral effects of AUD are impaired control over
drinking, negative social consequences, risky use, and altered physiological
effects (tolerance, withdrawal). This chapter presents an overview
of the prevalence and harmful consequences of AUD in the U.S.,
the systemic nature of the disease, neurocircuitry and stages of AUD,
comorbidities, fetal alcohol spectrum disorders, genetic risk factors, and
pharmacotherapies for AUD.

New Directions in Targeted Therapeutic Approaches for Older Adults With Mantl...i3 Health
i3 Health is pleased to make the speaker slides from this activity available for use as a non-accredited self-study or teaching resource.
This slide deck presented by Dr. Kami Maddocks, Professor-Clinical in the Division of Hematology and
Associate Division Director for Ambulatory Operations
The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, will provide insight into new directions in targeted therapeutic approaches for older adults with mantle cell lymphoma.
STATEMENT OF NEED
Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) accounting for 5% to 7% of all lymphomas. Its prognosis ranges from indolent disease that does not require treatment for years to very aggressive disease, which is associated with poor survival (Silkenstedt et al, 2021). Typically, MCL is diagnosed at advanced stage and in older patients who cannot tolerate intensive therapy (NCCN, 2022). Although recent advances have slightly increased remission rates, recurrence and relapse remain very common, leading to a median overall survival between 3 and 6 years (LLS, 2021). Though there are several effective options, progress is still needed towards establishing an accepted frontline approach for MCL (Castellino et al, 2022). Treatment selection and management of MCL are complicated by the heterogeneity of prognosis, advanced age and comorbidities of patients, and lack of an established standard approach for treatment, making it vital that clinicians be familiar with the latest research and advances in this area. In this activity chaired by Michael Wang, MD, Professor in the Department of Lymphoma & Myeloma at MD Anderson Cancer Center, expert faculty will discuss prognostic factors informing treatment, the promising results of recent trials in new therapeutic approaches, and the implications of treatment resistance in therapeutic selection for MCL.
Target Audience
Hematology/oncology fellows, attending faculty, and other health care professionals involved in the treatment of patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL).
Learning Objectives
1.) Identify clinical and biological prognostic factors that can guide treatment decision making for older adults with MCL
2.) Evaluate emerging data on targeted therapeutic approaches for treatment-naive and relapsed/refractory MCL and their applicability to older adults
3.) Assess mechanisms of resistance to targeted therapies for MCL and their implications for treatment selection

3. Lumbar spondylosis is a degenerative condition which affects the
lower spine. In a patient with lumbar spondylosis, the spine is
compressed by a narrowing of the space between the vertebrae,
causing a variety of health problems ranging from back pain tone
urological problems. In a classic case of lumbar spondylosis, the
space between discs in the lumbar spine becomes narrowed. As
result, the patient develops numbness, tingling, and pain which may
radiate out from the area.
DEFINITION | INTRODUCTION
4. These symptoms arc the result of pressure on the nerves emerging from
the spinal cord. Over the course of the development of lumbar
spondylosis, the vertebrae tend to become stiff, and they may fuse or
immobilize.
This leads to decreased flexibility and increased back pain as the
patient’s spine may become contorted or compromised by the
immobilized vertebrae. Lumbar spondylosis can also be characterized by
the development of bone spurs and bony overgrowths around the spine
which can pinch nerves.
SYMPTOMS
5. + Ageing
+ Obesity
+ Sedentary lifestyle
+ Abdominal muscle weakness
+ Psychological distress
+ Occupational-prolonged sitting or standing, Heavy weightlifting and twisting
RISK FACTORS FOR LUMBAR SPONDYLOSIS:
6. + Smoking
+ Pregnancy (in females)
+ Poor sleeping position.
+ Previous injury to the low back.
+ Poor posture - Posture inappropriate for the activity being performed
+ Congenital abnormalities in the spine
7. Due to the above risk factors, the disc may age prematurely and dries
up leading to narrowing of the disc space.
This allows abnormal
movements between vertebrae
and stresses the adjacent
vertebral bodies and facet
joints leading to a reactive hone
growth which compresses the
spinal nerve passing through
the intervertebral foramina.
PATHOGENESIS OF LUMBAR SPONDYLOSIS
8. Vertebral bodies upping and adjoining osteophyte formation
leads to spinal cord and spinal nerve compression. These
degenerative changes can occur at one level or in different levels
of the lumbar spine leading to multiple areas of spine stiffness,
pain and numbness.
10. SYMPTOMS OF LUMBAR SPONDYLOSIS
Symptoms are most severe in the
morning and again at the end of the
day and tend to improve with rest.
+ The pain may be dull or sharp and it
may be in one small area or over a
broad area.
+ Difficulty in moving that can he
severe enough to prevent walking or
standing
11. + Pain that does not radiate down the leg or pain that also moves
around to the groin, buttock or upper thigh sciatica; Pain that tends to
be achy and dull
+ Muscle spasms
+ Local soreness upon touch
+ Weakness or numbness in both legs or loss of bladder or bowel
control.
Most lumbar spondylosis is short-term (acute) and will go away in a few
weeks, It is more likely to become long-lasting (chronic) if it is not taken
care properly or do not adopt a healthy lifestyle.
12. DIAGNOSIS OF LUMBAR SPONDYLOSIS:
+ Medical history and Physical
examination for tenderness and
stiffness in low back.
+ X-ray of the lumbar spine.
+ Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
+ Computerized tomography (CT scan).
+ Myelogram.
+ Electromyogram (EMG).
13. PREVENTION:
+ Avoiding injury to the low back is a method of preventing
lumbar spondylosis. Additionally, conditioning exercise programs
designed to strengthen the lumbar area and adjacent tissues can
help to minimize risk of injury to the low back.
+ A routine of back-healthy activities may include stretching
exercises, swimming. walking, and Yoga to improve coordination
and develop proper posture and muscle balance.
+ Regular back bending exercises neutralize the stress on the
lower back and help in maintaining the normal curve of the
14. STRATEGIES TO MAINTAIN HEALTHY BACK
Don’t slouch when standing or
sitting: When standing, keeping
the weight balanced on feet. The
back supports weight most easily
when curvature is reduced.
Foot wear: Wearing comfortable,
low-heeled shoes.
15. Moving Heavy Items: Pushing
is easier on back than
pulling.
Lift right: Standing as close
to the object as one can.
Use legs rather
16. Sleep: Always sleep on the side with pillow between the knees.
Stretch out: Keeping flexible helps maintain normal joint function and a
good range of motion. It also reduces the risk of injury. Always stretch
before exercise or other strenuous physical activity.
Stay active: Staying active and keeping the body moving helps maintain
the health of the spine.
Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated to maintain soft
tissue elasticity and fluidity in joints, as the discs begin to shrink, one is
more vulnerable to painful disc conditions such as bulging or ruptures.
17. Work smart: Proper ergonomics can help to reduce stress on both the
lower and upper back, thus reducing the frequency of conditions
ranging from stiff back.
Rearranging the work space: Whether a laptop, phone, computer
desk, or even car - is set up for one’s height and functionality.
Choose chair that provides back support. Knees should be at 90
degrees and feet should rest comfortably on the floor.
18. Avoiding prolonged sitting or standing: Staying in one position for too long
will cause back muscles to tighten up and become immobile.
Reducing weight: Weight around the waistline strains the lower back
muscles.
Maintain proper nutrition: Sufficient daily intake of calcium, phosphorus,
and vitamin D helps to promote new bone growth.
Quit smoking: Smoking reduces blood flow to the lower spine and
causes the spinal discs to degenerate.
19. Recurring back pain resulting from improper body mechanics or
other non traumatic causes is often preventable.
A combination of exercises that don’t jolt or strain the back,
maintaining correct posture, and lifting objects properly can help
prevent injuries.
Treatment is usually conservative which includes
Medications: Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and muscle
CONTROL OF LUMBAR SPONDYLOSIS:
20. Bed rest:
1-2 days rest in severe pain only Billowed by exercise.
Exercise:
Exercise is the most effective way to speed recovery from lumbar
spondylosis and help strengthen back and abdominal muscles.
21. MANAGEMENT OF LUMBAR SPONDYLOSIS
NSAIDS are widely regarded as an appropriate first step in management,
providing analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. There is adequate data
demonstrating efficacy in pain reduction in the context of chronic low back
pain
Opioid medications may be considered as an alternative or augmentive
therapy for patients suffering from gastrointestinal effects or poor pain
control on NSAID management. The practice of prescribing narcotics for
chronic low back pain sufferers is extremely variable within practitioners,
with a range of 3–66% of chronic LBP patients taking some form of opioid in
various literature studies
22. Antidepressants
The use of antidepressants for treatment of LBP symptoms has also been
explored considerably given their proposed analgesic value at low doses, and
dual role in treatment of commonly comorbid depression that accompanies
LBP and may negatively impact both sleep and pain tolerance
Muscle relaxants, taking the form of either antispasmodic or antispasticity
medications, may provide benefit in chronic low back pain attributed to
degenerative conditions. There remains moderate to strong evidence
through several trials comparing either a benzodiazepine, or non-
benzodiazepine with placebo that muscle relaxants provide benefit with
regard to short-term pain relief and overall functioning
23. Epidural steroid injections (ESI) have become a common interventional
strategy in the management of chronic axial and radicular pain due to
degeneration of the lumbar spine. These injections may be performed
through interlaminar, transforaminal, or caudal approaches
