Tiered Approach
Designed to keep the
student in the
classroom!
First Step
You need to
maintain a
relationship with
the student, no
matter what. Talk
to him or her
daily, ask how he
or she is doing,
take interest in his
or her interests.
Ask about their
day, etc.
Relationship
Second Step
Ask her, “Do you need to go to
the back of the room?” Do not
sound angry or mad. Be calm
and monotone. It is her choice.
~If he or she does not want to go
to the back of the room, then
she will have to change her
behavior.
~If he or she does, allow them to
stay there until the are ready to
come back to their seat.
Relationship
Change location in the
room.
Third Step
If they continues the behavior,
or starts up the behavior again,
take them to another room (you
need to plan who this will be).
All you say is, “You need to go
to Mr/Mrs. room now.” That is it,
no other words. If he or she
starts to argue, tell them you
will not be arguing.
When you bring him or her to
the room, no words should be
said to him or her by anyone.
When they are ready to come
back, they can come back.Relationship

Fourth Step
If he or she cannot control their
behavior and acts up in the other
classroom, the teacher should
come back and get you and
watch over your class while you
escort the student to their
LD/EBD/CD room or Guidance
Office. Again, no speaking. The
second teacher does not give the
student reminders or chances. If
the student acts up, the teacher
will contact the first teacher. If
he or she argues, remind them
that you will not argue. Nothing
else.

Fifth Step
This is the step four
teacher’s decision. If the
student goes to the office,
an office referral will be
created. You and the
fourth step teacher will
work together on it.

When the student makes
us go through this
process, he or she will
have to restore the
energy that they have
taken from us. This is
something physical.
They do not just “stay in
for lunch.” They needs to
do something for you.
Ex. clean your tables
and put up chairs,
sweep your floor,
organize a cupboard,
etc.
