Essay On Alternative Fuel
Alternative Fuels America needs to free itself from oil dependency. Every day billions of dollars are
spent on resourcing oil from other countries. The United States consumes around 20 million barrels of
oil every day. In the 1970 s when the energy crisis happened, oil prices skyrocketed and the supply of
oil ceased, efforts shifted to find alternative sources of power. Although many people believe
alternative fuels are being researched and developed for environmental reasons such as reducing our
carbon emissions, they are actually becoming integrated into our lives from an economic standpoint.
Hydrogen, Electric, and Bio fueled cars are all excellent sources of Fig. 01: National Average Retail

While electric vehicles are an excellent alternative source, they do have some drawbacks. Electric
vehicles have long charge times and the infrastructure isn t fully developed all over the world. It s easy
to find gas stations along the road, but how often are electric vehicle charging stations found? The
placement of the structures is crucial because the chargers need to be in a good location. Authors of
Retailing Management Michael Levy and Barton Weitz explain that when a firm decides to open a
new station, they must make a substantial investment; either buy and develop the real estate or commit
to a long term lease typically ranging from 5 to 20 years. When companies set up a charging station its
more than just a place to refuel, it s an investment logically thought out as to where it should be
placed. Electric vehicles are an amazing advancement but some people are turned away who are used
to quick gas fill ups. Hydrogen Fuel cell is another solution to finding alternative fuel vehicles. This
technology has zero emissions, a driving range of 300 miles, and can be refueled and moving again in
minutes. Although this technology is more recent, the military has taken a liking to hydrogen powered
cars. Initially, electric vehicles were appealing to military because of how quiet they are, but setting up
charging locations is extremely difficult and the military doesn t have time to wait for their electric
vehicles to charge while in combat. The hydrogen vehicle was

How Employees Make Investment, Saving And Manage Their...
A number of aspects have emerged in the last ten years regarding the behaviors of employee in
making retirement decisions. This dissertation investigates various insights from previous studies
about how employees make investment, saving and manage their retirement plans. The purpose of this
study understands the behavior adopted by the individuals while making economic decisions and the
reaction of the market towards these decisions. Past studies demonstrate that majority of employees
make little savings towards while others make poor choices and other use their accumulated
investments quickly when they retire. The behavioral basis for these trends is overconfidence,
restricted regulation, and so forth. Providing detailed understanding on the reasons why employees do
no attain ideal results of their retirement plans, presents practical basis for policymakers and sponsors
in charge of designing, controlling an assessing organisations that offer financial security when
employees retire. In particular, literature shows that the design of pension plans should be made in a
way that it s automatic for employees unwilling to exercise control of their savings in old age. Table of

Steroid Banned
The sport of kings has been tainted by drug and steroid use long since it became popular. Although
there aren t many ways to regulate what is given to the crop of 30,000 thoroughbreds born per year,
there are efforts being made to keep steroids off of the track. Legal drugs and steroids vary from state
to state. Among the 38 states with horse racing, 28 have no rules or regulations regarding steroid use.
The remaining 10 have a partial ban that allows the use of four drugs, including the synthetic steroid
Winstrol. Some states have more lenient rules, and only apply prohibitions on race day. Anti steroid
laws are also prevalent in the United Kingdom and Australia. These bans don t make illegal steroid

The Importance Of Honor And Glory In Homer s Iliad
Honour and glory are central to the Greek character. Since heroes are the essence of the society from
which they come, Greek heroes live their lives according to honour and glory, in all their varied forms.
Honour and glory trigger an epic war that takes the lives of numerous men, and shape its development
at every stage. The fall of Troy is a thing... whose glory shall perish never (Homer, Iliad 2.324) . The
goal of the Greeks is the fame that resounds even after death, and they let nothing bar their way. The
honour of the individual, family, and community guide every action and response. Honour and glory
define the hero, and therefore are the foundations for everything that comes to pass in Homer s Iliad.
The concepts of honor and glory are critical to understanding the motivation of the heroes in Homer s
Iliad1 . Glory was gained by great, heroic actions and deeds and was conferred upon an individual by
others who witnessed and acclaimed the glorious actions. Major battles provided an opportunity for
many to find glory at once. Honor was similar to glory, but while the public had to view actions and
deem them glorious, each individual maintained their own sense of personal honor which did not
always coincide with honor as defined or perceived by the masses. Honor was gained through heroism
in battle, but also through compelling speechmaking, loyalty and other noble qualities that a person
might demonstrate. Having honor and glory allowed a Greek to gain influence in

Racial Beliefs And Its Effect On Society
As a young girl, I have always associated white people with the quality of being rude or racist. For
example, not holding doors as I walked behind them or ignoring my friendly smiles and comments. I
vividly remember several occasions where I would be walking two steps being a Caucasian person
and they would fail to hold the door open allowing it to slam in my face. There is also an uneasy stare
that is given while shopping, such as following African Americans around the store to watch them
make sure they are not stealing. The belief that white people are rude is not limited to black people,
but other minorities as well because their cultural beliefs and practices are often disrespected.
The stereotype emerged from personal experiences throughout my daily life. My mother would also
agree that most individuals who are white are rude to minorities because of their sense of entitlement.
She would often have to console me because, at a young age, I would acknowledge the difference in
treatment I received. About other cultures, their cultural beliefs are often disregarded and are not given
the time to understand. When someone is not fluent in English, they are often disregarded instead of
taking the time is comprehend their statement. Blacks are typically characterized as thieves or
hoodlums, Muslims are terrorist, and Mexicans are all labor workers, which are incorrect statements
and over generalized.
As a result, thinking that most Caucasians are rude or racists prevents me

Keats Use Of Figurative Language
In the poem When I Have Fears That I May Cease to be, John Keats reveals his overbearing fear of
dying young. What if he never gets to feel the passions of true love? What if he never gets to write the
mountains of books that he wishes to write? What if he never gets to experience the fame that he so
desires? Fear of not being able to complete our goals before we die is a fear that lurks in the dark
crevices of all of our minds. We must all find a way to fight this fear. Most people do it by blocking it
out completely, but not Keats. Keats confronts his fear full force by announcing it to the public.
Through the use of figurative language, such as repetition, imagery and personification, Keats leads us
through a daunting journey of his greatest ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Readers of Keats s story begin to realize that the fear of a young death is a demon that haunts us all.
This was Keats s goal as a romantic writer: to connect with the reader, to portray his ideas in the form
of art, and to make the reader see from his point of view. With his use of colorful figurative language,
such as repetition, imagery, and personification, Keats accomplishes his goal. The reason that Keats is
so successful in painting a clear picture is because he uses his imagination to write (King). By writing
his poem in the form of a Shakespearean sonnet consisting of three quatrains (King), Keats, like any
great artist, clearly states the point he is trying to make. Apprehension of a young demise is a plague
that haunts us all. In When I Have Fears That I May Cease to be, Keats takes our hands and reassures

achieving higher level positions in the organizations. This is called glass ceiling. In my study the Glass
Ceiling is my independent variable and I am trying to see its affect on the two dependent variables of
my study which are Job Satisfaction and Organizational Commitment . There comes a mediating
variable between glass ceiling and job satisfaction which is Job performance . Because when
employees job performance gets affected by the practices of glass ceiling in the organization badly
then ultimately their satisfaction level decreases. Glass ceiling also includes the gender discrimination

according to previous studies relating this topic of glass ceiling (Bergman Bodil 2003, Dimovski

Male Culture Family and Social Commitments as the independent variables and their affect was

was conducted on the mid aged Jordanian female managers employed in different sections of the
different organizations. Researchers received 117 useable responses of those structured questionnaires.
This research was an exploratory and analytical study. Reason for calling it an analytical study is that
its interest is finding the factors that influence women career progress. A simple regression test s
results showed that the first, second and third hypotheses were confirmed as expected earlier but when
the researcher applied a multiple regression test the results supported the fourth hypothesis of the
study. The study further shows the strong and significant relation of male culture and organizational
practices with the women career progress. Women family commitments had the weakest positive
relation with the women career progress. In this study ANOVA results confirmed the impact of glass

Media and Its Effects on Society

English 225, Section 23
Final Paper Draft 1 The media is an obvious factor in the increase of violence, risky behavior, and
obesity in kids in our society. Television programs and movies are becoming more and more violent,
and more abundant to fulfill the demand for an overly desensitized audience. For any type of
television show or movie to be considered good and entertaining it must excel in at least 3 categories:
blood and guts, curse words, and the most important element of all how believable are the scenarios.
The good guy must prevail, even if it means murdering 25 men in order to rescue the super hot
defenseless heiress. It s sad really, for some it is engaging and entertaining as long as the ... Show

A survey of 2,000 3rd graders showed that as the number of hours of television viewing increased, so
did the rates of anxiety, depression, and post traumatic stress (Rao,79). Some babysitter huh?
Television programs create false perceptions of the real world. Often times children will become
fearful of the real world and expect that something bad will happen to them (How TV Affects Your
Child, Par. 10). Many parents think that they can explain away the frightening scenes that children
watch, but unfortunately frightening TV scenes have an immediate impact on kids: 62% of parents
report that their children have at some point been scared that something they saw in a TV program or
movie might happen to them (Rao, 80). Another very sad problem that too much television is creating
is that in most cases children watch television alone. Teenagers with very few friends often create
substitute friendships, also know as parasocial friendships (71). Television does not educate children
on how to integrate and contribute to society in healthy ways. Often times children are bombarded
with messages like, its cool to smoke, its cool to drink, have sex with whoever you want as long as
their hot, and its okay to beat someone up as long as you re the good guy. How can we possibly be
creating a clear and decisive message about the types of

A Comparison of Film and Novel Versions of Frankenstein Essay
A Comparison of Film and Novel Versions of Frankenstein
The nature of horror stories gives the reader/audience a feeling of intense fear, shock or disgust. It
creates an atmosphere of tension for the reader/audience. Horror stories are designed to entertain
people by causing enjoyable feelings of horror.
The purposes of the films/novel: In James Whale version and Mary Shelley s novel the purpose was to
scare the reader/audience. In Mel Brooks Frankenstein the purpose of the film was to entertain to
create humour, to make the audience laugh. Kenneth Branagh s film the purpose was to scare and

The film Young Frankenstein directed by Mel Brooks, 1974 Young Frankenstein is a series of
hilarious humour scenes. To create humour exaggerated dialogue was used. This exaggeration made
the dialogue sound ridiculous. When Frankenstein said throw the first switch then the second and

7 Terraces In Dante s Comedy
Love, in Dante s view, is the force behind all human action (Musa, p. 112). Similarly, Augustine
believes that love is the path to happiness, stating, What was it that delighted me? Only loving and
being loved (Augustine, 2, p. 62). In Dante s Divine Comedy: Purgatory, Dante tells the story of a
pilgrim traveling through the seven terraces in Purgatory. On his journey, the pilgrim learns the
consequences of loving even good things too much. In particular, the last three terraces of Purgatory
that he visits demonstrate the dangers of loving good things with excessive zeal (Dante, 17.96). In
Augustine s Confessions, he converses with God describing his journey from being consumed with his
love of earthly pleasures, particularly sex, to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Dante sees the fire that engulfs the seventh terrance leaving only a narrow path to walk he
becomes terrified, since there was the fire, and here I could fall off (Dante, 25.116 117). The fact that
there it is so easy to fall off of this narrow path symbolizes that most people do fall into the sin of lust,
and very few are able to stay on the narrow path of not falling into this sin. Through this book, Dante
has been making this journey to finally see his lover, Beatrice, who died several years ago. Although
Beatrice symbolizes faith, she also is the object of Dante s lust. When Dante finally sees Beatrice, he
senses Signs of the ancient flame (Dante, 30.48). This flame represents the lust he had for Beatrice.
Even though, Dante has passed the seven terraces he still does not fully love God. Dante gave mind
and eye to satisfying her, over satisfying God (Dante, 32.108), and his attention is solely fixed on
Beatrice who reigned completely in [his] mind (Dante, 32.93). It is not until Dante realizes that
Beatrice represents faith in God and revelations that, What [he] had loved the most of all the thing that
were not she, [he] hated now the most (Dante, 31.86 87). Dante finally realizes that putting God above
all else is the best thing to do if one truly wishes to be

The Forgotten Legacy Of The Power Of Possession
oday, the forgotten legacy of the power of possession appears evident; however, during the time of
Christ the belief in the destructive forces of this occurrence emerges as a severe issue for the general
public. Eusebius, a Roman historian, exegete and Christian polemicist, became the Bishop of various
Christian centers in Caesarea near the year 314 A.D.; notably, an exceptional Biblical scholar of his
time. Eusebius tells of the events of Jesus ridding human life from demons of every kind, so that there
were some of them now kneeling before Him and beseeching Him not to deliver them over to the
Tartarus that awaited them. Furthermore, Eusebius specifically identifies the goat god Pan as being
overthrown by Jesus during His ministry.
If you are a true Christian, the realism of the devil and its forces manifestly stand out as crucial, for
Jesus warfare against Satan endures as critical nucleus of His teachings. Principally, one of the major
realities of Satan, devil(s) ever documented persists as that of Jesus Christ s exposure of this evil
presence in the New Testament; which occurs as a key happening within Jesus ministry (Matt 8:28,
Mark 5:15, Luke 8:36). For with the appearance of Christ, a miracle erupts, challenging among other
things, humanity s sexuality, (although the majority of people remain unaware of the true mystery that
Christ came to earth to expose concerning people s misguided beliefs regarding their sexuality).

(Walmart, 2012) The company announced a $750 million, 73 store expansion plan in early 2012. A.
Country Competitiveness A large multinational company such as Walmart experiences different
opportunities and challenges in the countries in which it does business. Walmart being the largest
retailer in the world, must adapt to varying business environments. Canada s competitiveness relative
to Walmart s expansion is viewed through Porter s diamond framework. Country Level Determinants
The passage of NAFTA represented an enticing opportunity for Walmart to capitalize on the discount
store industry, of which only Zellers and K Mart had a presence in. NAFTA also paved the road for
Walmart s expansion into Canada. The agreement had the intention of creating job and economic
growth as well as eliminating tariffs and controls on goods transported amongst the three countries.
This phenomenon of internationalization created openness and capability for Walmart to capitalize on
goods production in one country, followed by movement and sales in the other. Moreover, currency
valuation in present day represents an opportunity for retailers to expand into the Canadian market.

Mr Collins Pride And Prejudice Humor Essay
In Pride and Prejudice, humor is used to highlight absurd situations and social blunders. Austen uses
humor as a tool to show the readers what behavior is acceptable and what is not. Behaving above your

examples of how not to act. Mr. Collins is constantly trying to improve his social situation by using
his connection to Lady Catherine, Sir William takes himself too seriously, and Caroline always tries to

attempts to improve her social status have completely backfired. This irony, as well as the

LSD Synthesis Essay
Ever since the beginning of Nixon s War on Drugs, psychoactive substances have been given a bad
rap. This is especially true for psychedelics like LSD, psilocybin (the psychoactive compound found
in magic mushrooms), dimethyltryptamine (DMT), and of course the list could go on and on. But as
research has recently begun again on these compounds, scientists are finding more and more reason
for these substances to be reevaluated. In addition to helping with anxiety and depression,
psychedelics are today most well known for their effects on the brain s creativity levels. In light of
this, should psychedelics be evaluated and considered for legal use in society, as a tool for all of us,
and especially artists, to increase our creativity? The Birth of LSD Albert Hofmann was a German

Fighting Inequality and Oppression with Non-Violence Is...
An unjust law is itself a species of violence. Arrest for its breach is more so. Now the law of
nonviolence says that violence should be resisted not by counter violence but by nonviolence. This I
do by breaking the law and by peacefully submitting to arrest and imprisonment. (Mahatma Gandhi)
Since Americas independence until today people try to find different approaches to defeat the
inequality and the oppression. An old traditional thought is that violence can only be treated with
violence, there is no room left for an analysis of the situation and try to approach it differently. Yet,
there are ways like Gandhi quote states if we have to break the law and accept the consequences to
counter violence by non violence might as well accept this method; either way people suffer the
consequences for breaking the law . On the onther hand, a nonviolence movement will shift people
view on the positive side rather than the negative side; demonstrating that nonviolence method will
achieve justice in a peaceful way without the consequences of violence. The best method to advocate
justice is by fostering a Non violent character to people and to stand up against the enemy with
intelligence.
Fighting inequality and oppression with violence has being an old school thought that had been
penetrated in the people mid since they were little, and the consequences of such thought had been

The Diet, The South Beach Diet
Introduction: We live in a society that is crazed in following latest diets whether it be the
Mediterranean diet, the Atkins diet, the South Beach diet etc. Each day there are new discoveries
displayed throughout the media regarding diets and lifestyles, yet for a society so obsessed in the
healthiest trend our statistics tend to show the flying numbers at which the population is diagnosed
with chronic diseases related to nutritional factors. Thus a sound nutrition is more essential than ever.
In the United States at least 4 of the 10 leading causes of are directly linked to what we eat. Majority if
not all of the chronic diseases have a nutritional/lifestyle component that if caught in time can be
reversed. Therefore the focus of the meal plan project was to gain an understanding of one s own
personal nutritional intake by measuring calories consumed throughout the course of one week. In
doing so the individual is made aware of any nutritional deficiencies or food excesses by the choices
made when selecting food. The individual is able to fully grasp their individual needs by analyzing the
data collected over their consumption of essential nutrients such as carbohydrates, lipids, water and
proteins. In the midst of attending class, work and club schedules, as well as inadequate sleep I
hypothesize that my overall nutrition will look be a downward spiral with insufficient calories and
deficiencies in minerals.

Langston Hughes Obstacles
Despite the childhood and early life that Langston Hughes faced, he became one of the world s
greatest authors, poets, activists, and Harlem Renaissance leaders. His works reached such a prestige
as to give him awards from institutions such as the NAACP for African American Achievements and a
doctorate from Howard university. Facing oppression and problems as an early child, Langston
Hughes was born into world that was unlikely to set him on the bright path he created for his life. He
began his life on a unique path as he was multi racial being composed of African American, Native
American, and French. Born in 1902 in Joplin, Missouri, Hughes had a rare ethic background living in

extreme poverty and cried out through the form of the Harlem Renaissance. At this time, the Harlem
Renaissance was providing global influence and had spread across the world no longer through just
literature but music, storytelling, and art. The global spotlight in the city of Harlem allowed Hughes to
gain a following and expand his audience across the United States and the globe. The poem Mother to

The Heian Period Essay
The Heian Period from about 794 1185 A.D. was an impressive era in Japanese history. Considered
Japan s Classical Age, it was a period of wealth and sophistication. Peace and prosperity, high culture,
powerful clans, new ideas and relative independence of foreign influence marked this time.
The move to the capital of Heian kyō (modern day Kyoto) was motivated in large part on a desire by
Emperor Kammu to reduce the substantial influence exercised by the monasteries in Heijō kyō
(modern day Nara). Nara was patterned after the capital city of Tang, China, and its religion was based
on their brand of Buddhism. Earlier Imperial sponsorship of Buddhism had politicized the clergy,
resulting in power and corruption within their leadership. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Great care was taken in color coordination of kimonos. In addition, lavish makeup was also prized,
and women of high caste were never seen in public without it. Even among men, good taste in dress
and manner were valued more highly than skill in battle.
The Heian Period marked a newfound independence in Japanese thought and brought with it a sense
of national pride that caused its people to begin a separation from the dominant Chinese influence.
Although trade continued on unofficial levels, Japanese rulers severed official ties with China.
Big changes were taking place in Japanese writing, as well. Although Chinese remained the official
written language of the court, Kana, a simplified method of writing, was developed. Each symbol was
a simplified version of Chinese characters and represented spoken syllables used in Japanese. The ease
of learning led to broader literacy and many poems and stories being written. Many women possessed
the ability to read and write and were able to express their ideas, one of the best examples being The
Tale of Genji, by Murasaki Shikibu. Believed to be the world s first novel, it offers a detailed look at
Heian court life, rituals, and culture. Educated women such as these were often able to progress in
Heian society, with considerable rights and privileges. As such, they filled roles at all levels and were
often major players in politics and power struggles.
This period also saw the beginnings of the samurai.

The Battle Of Religion During The 16th And 17th Centuries
During the 16th and 17th centuries a series of religious wars raged throughout Europe. In the fight to
gain religious tolerance it created a split between the Catholics and the Protestants. The Dutch Revolt
in the Spanish Netherlands was part of the series of religious wars in Europe. For ten years, a civil war
raged in the Netherlands between the Catholics and the Protestants. Religion and politics were at the
center of this revolt. Calvinism was spreading rapidly and became popular among the lower classes,
lesser nobles, and town leaders. However, the strong Catholic King, Philip II desired to eliminate
Calvinism within his territories. Philip II believed if he tackled Calvinism, then it would enhance his
power in his monarchy. Therefore, politics were at the heart of this revolt since Philip II desired to
impose Catholicism in an attempt to centralize his power in the Spanish Netherlands. Furthermore,
politics and religion were also at the center of the French Wars of Religion. The religious differences
between the two religious sects, the Huguenots and Roman Catholics, reveal that religion was also
responsible for these series of wars in France. Therefore, politics and religion were both at the heart of
the French Wars of Religion because it created fractional rivalries between the major families in
France, members of the Royal Family made several attempts to sustain their power within the estate,

Over the years there has been an increased number of immigrants into the U.S. As such, it has resulted

Arguably, when the immigrants are not capable of invoking the labour and employment rights, there is
an experienced decline in the employment laws. As such, it implies that the worker may be subjected
to violations that amount from wage and hour violation. Therefore, passing essential border security,
Immigration Modernization Act will help a great deal in fixing the problem. Reforms Securing of
entry points on the border There can be no effective reforms that can be put in place if the borders are
not secured from illegal immigrants. As such, after the United States controls the borders, should the
Congress consider temporary worker initiative. Securing the border would entail various aspects that
would necessitate for additional frontline border patrol, technological enhancement, the inclusion of
fences or barriers in some locations, as well as, the U.S. military support. A plan that would not
include the legislation of border control would greatly augment the rates of illegal immigrants. This
was painfully realized from the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, where legalization
happened without securing of the borders. This was catastrophic at that time. Elimination of Social
Services and Jobs Magnet Secondly, the elimination of job opportunities for illegal immigrants should

The Central Park Documentary Analysis
The documentary The Central Park Five highlights the flaws of the American judicial system and the
ways that it directly targets African Americans. On April 19, 1989 Trisha Meili was attacked whilst
jogging in Central Park. This attack resulted in five young boys Korey Wise, Kevin Richardson,
Raymond Santana, Yusef Salaam, and Antron McCraylost losing their youth and any chance at a
normal life when they were wrongfully imprisoned for a crime they did not commit. The documentary
focuses on humanizing the five men in efforts to put a face to injustice. Their incarceration was a
result of socioeconomic factors combined with the institutional racism that is embedded not only
within our judicial system but permeates our society as a whole. By looking at the political and
economic climate of the 1970s and 1980s, the film highlights the effects of wealth ... Show more

This began the trend of an expansive penal system, one that has persisted to this day. Our judicial
system no longer holds the original purpose of prisons as a means of reforming individuals, but rather
uses them as a solution to crime. Mass incarceration has become the temporary fix for the fundamental
problems that exist within the structure of our society. The film highlights the importance of
understanding the political and economic environment of New York City during the time of the
Central Park Jogger case. It underscores the rising wealth of the city during the 1980s. This surge of
wealth was largely attributed to the introduction of neoliberalism during the late 1970s. David Harvey
addresses the urban crisis that struck New York in his book A Brief History of Neoliberalism,
emphasizing the austerity and capitalist restructuring of the city that elevated the wealthy while
casting working class citizens and immigrants aside. This greatly exasperated the effects of racism and
poverty. The economic policies during this

Acoustic Guitar Review
After a long time of sticking out on a normal guitar amp with the increase amped up and different

most clean sounds I have ever heard. It even has a couple extremely decent elements that I have not

Giving An Account Of Oneself By Judith Butler
Giving an Account of Oneself, a compelling piece of work written by Judith Butler, digs deep into
what it means to give an account of oneself and how it is nearly, if not entirely, impossible to do such
an activity without becoming a social theorist (Butler 8). Butler states the story of my origin I tell is
not one for which I am accountable, and it cannot establish my accountability, (Butler 37) since the
story is always changing. We are not able to give our accounts as the accounts we give will always be
told in different lights and we, as beings, are always changing as the norms around us change. The
sense of being ties into us not being the same person we were when we came into being, and nor are
we the same being as when we begin to tell the story of our origin of being. However, other notable
influences, such as Levinas, believe that fully exposing our origin of being would act as a sort of
surplus (Levinas 79) meaning those we expose our origin of being to will be so overwhelmed with the
situation that we would never be able to give an account of ourselves overall. Levinas views coincides
with Butlers on the topic of norms and how we will never be able to act outside of norms when he
states, the moment I realize that the terms by which I confer recognition are not mine alone... I am, as
it were, disposed by the language that I offer (Levinas 26).

The Importance Of Light And Darkness In Heart Of Darkness
Joseph Conrad uses light and darkness in Heart of Darkness to demonstrate that humans are not
innately evil but rather a mixture of the two. The good then light can be overpowered by the evil then
darkness when the characters refuse to see the value of the individual. Conrad goes on to show that
light can embody evil instead of goodness similar to how Dave Eggers uses light and darkness in The
Circle. Through this juxtaposition, both Conrad and Eggers highlight the ignorance and refusal of the
main character to see the evil within or the evil around.
Conrad focuses on the morality of man, his capability to discern right from wrong, and the actions he
makes in response to that understanding; however, there is a point where there is no longer a way to
return to the good. In conjunction with Marlow s journey in which he sees the gradual growth of
darkness, the darkness grows within the heart of those making the journey. The mutual growth is
because Africa itself, with its forests, its heat, and its mysteries, is only a symbol of the larger
darkness, which is in the heart of man ( Heart of Darkness 111). By the time a person is in the heart of
the jungle, the immorality has practically demolished any remaining good. One such person is Kurtz
who foolishly expose[s] himself to the wild irresistible allure of the jungle and lo! the darkness [finds]

Harlem And The Harlem Renaissance
The Great Migrations was the movement or relocation of over 6 million blacks from Southern rural
regions to Northern urban areas. Looking to leave behind the racial tension of the south, and with
hopes of new job opportunities in the north, many blacks moved in to urban cities such as Chicago,
Detroit, and Harlem. Out of these northern metropolises, the most popular was Harlem; here in
Manhattan (Harlem) is not merely the largest Negro community in the world, but the first
concentration in history of so many diverse element of Negro life (1050). Harlem became the mecca

men in the society. Oehlschlaeger (2013) asserts that it is difficult to comprehend the need to bring to
an end such brutal acts of celebrations, which demean the value of human life. This is the missing
discussion in the other articles and the authors were not able to prescribe a way to see the tradition die

same course of celebrations. What is not clear though is whether this lottery will come to an end

Summary Of The Movie Moana
The animated Disney film, Moana, was released in November 2016 and directed by Ron Clements and
John Musker. The thing that sets this film apart from others is that the princess, Moana, doesn t seek
romance to feel full. Instead, this film demands for young children to embrace their family and
community while remaining heroic and authentic to their culture. Moana was an original film,
emotionally engaging, and it stuck to Disney s style while following its own rules. When I first saw
this film, I was relieved by the fact that this Disney princess movie had a romance free plot, which
asserts Moana s individuality and resilience unlike any other Disney characters in the rest of the films.
The directors took the style of a typical Disney princess film and gave it its own twist. The film
consists of the princess learning to lead from her ancestors by respecting her culture and traditions,
while continuing to be a courageous young woman, to help keep the community strong. Instead of the
princess falling in love with a prince, she fights to discover her true identity throughout the whole
film. The definitive themes of cultural appreciation and female empowerment are what sets this
Disney film apart from the rest and helps it become a huge success. The striking visual imagination
and the catchy tunes, which left me humming as I was leaving the movie theatre, kept me emotionally
engaged to this film. The questionable objects personified in the film, which gave a surrealist

  • 2. Essay On Alternative Fuel Alternative Fuels America needs to free itself from oil dependency. Every day billions of dollars are spent on resourcing oil from other countries. The United States consumes around 20 million barrels of oil every day. In the 1970 s when the energy crisis happened, oil prices skyrocketed and the supply of oil ceased, efforts shifted to find alternative sources of power. Although many people believe alternative fuels are being researched and developed for environmental reasons such as reducing our carbon emissions, they are actually becoming integrated into our lives from an economic standpoint. Hydrogen, Electric, and Bio fueled cars are all excellent sources of Fig. 01: National Average Retail Fuel Prices for July 2017 alternative ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While electric vehicles are an excellent alternative source, they do have some drawbacks. Electric vehicles have long charge times and the infrastructure isn t fully developed all over the world. It s easy to find gas stations along the road, but how often are electric vehicle charging stations found? The placement of the structures is crucial because the chargers need to be in a good location. Authors of Retailing Management Michael Levy and Barton Weitz explain that when a firm decides to open a new station, they must make a substantial investment; either buy and develop the real estate or commit to a long term lease typically ranging from 5 to 20 years. When companies set up a charging station its more than just a place to refuel, it s an investment logically thought out as to where it should be placed. Electric vehicles are an amazing advancement but some people are turned away who are used to quick gas fill ups. Hydrogen Fuel cell is another solution to finding alternative fuel vehicles. This technology has zero emissions, a driving range of 300 miles, and can be refueled and moving again in minutes. Although this technology is more recent, the military has taken a liking to hydrogen powered cars. Initially, electric vehicles were appealing to military because of how quiet they are, but setting up charging locations is extremely difficult and the military doesn t have time to wait for their electric vehicles to charge while in combat. The hydrogen vehicle was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although there aren t many ways to regulate what is given to the crop of 30,000 thoroughbreds born per year, there are efforts being made to keep steroids off of the track. Legal drugs and steroids vary from state to state. Among the 38 states with horse racing, 28 have no rules or regulations regarding steroid use. The remaining 10 have a partial ban that allows the use of four drugs, including the synthetic steroid Winstrol. Some states have more lenient rules, and only apply prohibitions on race day. • 6. The Importance Of Honor And Glory In Homer s Iliad Honour and glory are central to the Greek character. Since heroes are the essence of the society from which they come, Greek heroes live their lives according to honour and glory, in all their varied forms. Honour and glory trigger an epic war that takes the lives of numerous men, and shape its development at every stage. The fall of Troy is a thing... whose glory shall perish never (Homer, Iliad 2.324) . The goal of the Greeks is the fame that resounds even after death, and they let nothing bar their way. The honour of the individual, family, and community guide every action and response. Honour and glory define the hero, and therefore are the foundations for everything that comes to pass in Homer s Iliad. The concepts of honor and glory are critical to understanding the motivation of the heroes in Homer s Iliad1 . Glory was gained by great, heroic actions and deeds and was conferred upon an individual by others who witnessed and acclaimed the glorious actions. Major battles provided an opportunity for many to find glory at once. Honor was similar to glory, but while the public had to view actions and deem them glorious, each individual maintained their own sense of personal honor which did not always coincide with honor as defined or perceived by the masses. Honor was gained through heroism in battle, but also through compelling speechmaking, loyalty and other noble qualities that a person might demonstrate. • 7. Racial Beliefs And Its Effect On Society As a young girl, I have always associated white people with the quality of being rude or racist. For example, not holding doors as I walked behind them or ignoring my friendly smiles and comments. I vividly remember several occasions where I would be walking two steps being a Caucasian person and they would fail to hold the door open allowing it to slam in my face. There is also an uneasy stare that is given while shopping, such as following African Americans around the store to watch them make sure they are not stealing. The belief that white people are rude is not limited to black people, but other minorities as well because their cultural beliefs and practices are often disrespected. The stereotype emerged from personal experiences throughout my daily life. My mother would also agree that most individuals who are white are rude to minorities because of their sense of entitlement. She would often have to console me because, at a young age, I would acknowledge the difference in treatment I received. About other cultures, their cultural beliefs are often disregarded and are not given the time to understand. When someone is not fluent in English, they are often disregarded instead of taking the time is comprehend their statement. Blacks are typically characterized as thieves or hoodlums, Muslims are terrorist, and Mexicans are all labor workers, which are incorrect statements and over generalized. • 8. Keats Use Of Figurative Language In the poem When I Have Fears That I May Cease to be, John Keats reveals his overbearing fear of dying young. What if he never gets to feel the passions of true love? What if he never gets to write the mountains of books that he wishes to write? What if he never gets to experience the fame that he so desires? Fear of not being able to complete our goals before we die is a fear that lurks in the dark crevices of all of our minds. We must all find a way to fight this fear. Most people do it by blocking it out completely, but not Keats. Keats confronts his fear full force by announcing it to the public. Readers of Keats s story begin to realize that the fear of a young death is a demon that haunts us all. This was Keats s goal as a romantic writer: to connect with the reader, to portray his ideas in the form of art, and to make the reader see from his point of view. With his use of colorful figurative language, such as repetition, imagery, and personification, Keats accomplishes his goal. The reason that Keats is so successful in painting a clear picture is because he uses his imagination to write (King). By writing his poem in the form of a Shakespearean sonnet consisting of three quatrains (King), Keats, like any great artist, clearly states the point he is trying to make. Apprehension of a young demise is a plague that haunts us all. In When I Have Fears That I May Cease to be, Keats takes our hands and reassures us that we are not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This study includes Organizational Practices , Male Culture Family and Social Commitments as the independent variables and their affect was shown on Women Career Progress which is the primary dependent variable of the study. The study was conducted on the mid aged Jordanian female managers employed in different sections of the different organizations. Researchers received 117 useable responses of those structured questionnaires. This research was an exploratory and analytical study. Reason for calling it an analytical study is that its interest is finding the factors that influence women career progress. A simple regression test s results showed that the first, second and third hypotheses were confirmed as expected earlier but when the researcher applied a multiple regression test the results supported the fourth hypothesis of the study. The study further shows the strong and significant relation of male culture and organizational practices with the women career progress. Women family commitments had the weakest positive relation with the women career progress. In this study ANOVA results confirmed the impact of glass ceiling barrier on the women ... • 10. Media and Its Effects on Society S. Jade Flewelling Ms. Melissa Hicks English 225, Section 23 Final Paper Draft 1 The media is an obvious factor in the increase of violence, risky behavior, and obesity in kids in our society. Television programs and movies are becoming more and more violent, and more abundant to fulfill the demand for an overly desensitized audience. For any type of television show or movie to be considered good and entertaining it must excel in at least 3 categories: blood and guts, curse words, and the most important element of all how believable are the scenarios. The good guy must prevail, even if it means murdering 25 men in order to rescue the super hot defenseless heiress. It s sad really, for some it is engaging and entertaining as long as the ... A survey of 2,000 3rd graders showed that as the number of hours of television viewing increased, so did the rates of anxiety, depression, and post traumatic stress (Rao,79). Some babysitter huh? Television programs create false perceptions of the real world. Often times children will become fearful of the real world and expect that something bad will happen to them (How TV Affects Your Child, Par. 10). Many parents think that they can explain away the frightening scenes that children watch, but unfortunately frightening TV scenes have an immediate impact on kids: 62% of parents report that their children have at some point been scared that something they saw in a TV program or movie might happen to them (Rao, 80). Another very sad problem that too much television is creating is that in most cases children watch television alone. Teenagers with very few friends often create substitute friendships, also know as parasocial friendships (71). Television does not educate children on how to integrate and contribute to society in healthy ways. Often times children are bombarded with messages like, its cool to smoke, its cool to drink, have sex with whoever you want as long as their hot, and its okay to beat someone up as long as you re the good guy. • 12. 7 Terraces In Dante s Comedy Love, in Dante s view, is the force behind all human action (Musa, p. 112). Similarly, Augustine believes that love is the path to happiness, stating, What was it that delighted me? Only loving and being loved (Augustine, 2, p. 62). In Dante s Divine Comedy: Purgatory, Dante tells the story of a pilgrim traveling through the seven terraces in Purgatory. On his journey, the pilgrim learns the consequences of loving even good things too much. In particular, the last three terraces of Purgatory that he visits demonstrate the dangers of loving good things with excessive zeal (Dante, 17.96). When Dante sees the fire that engulfs the seventh terrance leaving only a narrow path to walk he becomes terrified, since there was the fire, and here I could fall off (Dante, 25.116 117). The fact that there it is so easy to fall off of this narrow path symbolizes that most people do fall into the sin of lust, and very few are able to stay on the narrow path of not falling into this sin. Through this book, Dante has been making this journey to finally see his lover, Beatrice, who died several years ago. Although Beatrice symbolizes faith, she also is the object of Dante s lust. When Dante finally sees Beatrice, he senses Signs of the ancient flame (Dante, 30.48). This flame represents the lust he had for Beatrice. Even though, Dante has passed the seven terraces he still does not fully love God. Dante gave mind and eye to satisfying her, over satisfying God (Dante, 32.108), and his attention is solely fixed on Beatrice who reigned completely in [his] mind (Dante, 32.93). • 13. The Forgotten Legacy Of The Power Of Possession oday, the forgotten legacy of the power of possession appears evident; however, during the time of Christ the belief in the destructive forces of this occurrence emerges as a severe issue for the general public. Eusebius, a Roman historian, exegete and Christian polemicist, became the Bishop of various Christian centers in Caesarea near the year 314 A.D.; notably, an exceptional Biblical scholar of his time. Eusebius tells of the events of Jesus ridding human life from demons of every kind, so that there were some of them now kneeling before Him and beseeching Him not to deliver them over to the Tartarus that awaited them. Furthermore, Eusebius specifically identifies the goat god Pan as being overthrown by Jesus during His ministry. If you are a true Christian, the realism of the devil and its forces manifestly stand out as crucial, for Jesus warfare against Satan endures as critical nucleus of His teachings. Principally, one of the major realities of Satan, devil(s) ever documented persists as that of Jesus Christ s exposure of this evil presence in the New Testament; which occurs as a key happening within Jesus ministry (Matt 8:28, Mark 5:15, Luke 8:36). For with the appearance of Christ, a miracle erupts, challenging among other things, humanity s sexuality, (although the majority of people remain unaware of the true mystery that Christ came to earth to expose concerning people s misguided beliefs regarding their sexuality). (Walmart, 2012) The company announced a $750 million, 73 store expansion plan in early 2012. A. Country Competitiveness A large multinational company such as Walmart experiences different opportunities and challenges in the countries in which it does business. Walmart being the largest retailer in the world, must adapt to varying business environments. Canada s competitiveness relative to Walmart s expansion is viewed through Porter s diamond framework. Country Level Determinants The passage of NAFTA represented an enticing opportunity for Walmart to capitalize on the discount store industry, of which only Zellers and K Mart had a presence in. NAFTA also paved the road for Walmart s expansion into Canada. The agreement had the intention of creating job and economic growth as well as eliminating tariffs and controls on goods transported amongst the three countries. This phenomenon of internationalization created openness and capability for Walmart to capitalize on goods production in one country, followed by movement and sales in the other. Moreover, currency valuation in present day represents an opportunity for retailers to expand into the Canadian market. Austen uses humor as a tool to show the readers what behavior is acceptable and what is not. Behaving above your rank is one of these social faux pas. Mr. Collins is constantly trying to improve his social situation by using his connection to Lady Catherine, Sir William takes himself too seriously, and Caroline always tries to elevate herself above Elizabeth, even though they are of the same station. • 16. LSD Synthesis Essay Ever since the beginning of Nixon s War on Drugs, psychoactive substances have been given a bad rap. This is especially true for psychedelics like LSD, psilocybin (the psychoactive compound found in magic mushrooms), dimethyltryptamine (DMT), and of course the list could go on and on. But as research has recently begun again on these compounds, scientists are finding more and more reason for these substances to be reevaluated. In addition to helping with anxiety and depression, psychedelics are today most well known for their effects on the brain s creativity levels. In light of this, should psychedelics be evaluated and considered for legal use in society, as a tool for all of us, and especially artists, to increase our creativity? In the process of obtaining that status, he has put Redskins management in a difficult situation just one year prior to when he becomes eligible for free agency. At this point in the off season with just a couple of months until the draft, the Redskins need to make what figures to be its most important decision of the offseason. On the table are three options: the team could elect to put the transitional tag on Cousins and forfeit any chance of a compensation pick should he sign with another team, they could use its franchise tag and assure a compensatory pick, but put themselves in a position of upsetting Cousins because it would make him a less attractive commodity to other teams, or they could simply let him walk as a free agent at the end of the season and get nothing. Now the law of nonviolence says that violence should be resisted not by counter violence but by nonviolence. This I do by breaking the law and by peacefully submitting to arrest and imprisonment. (Mahatma Gandhi) Since Americas independence until today people try to find different approaches to defeat the inequality and the oppression. An old traditional thought is that violence can only be treated with violence, there is no room left for an analysis of the situation and try to approach it differently. Yet, there are ways like Gandhi quote states if we have to break the law and accept the consequences to counter violence by non violence might as well accept this method; either way people suffer the consequences for breaking the law . On the onther hand, a nonviolence movement will shift people view on the positive side rather than the negative side; demonstrating that nonviolence method will achieve justice in a peaceful way without the consequences of violence. Peace and prosperity, high culture, powerful clans, new ideas and relative independence of foreign influence marked this time. The move to the capital of Heian kyō (modern day Kyoto) was motivated in large part on a desire by Emperor Kammu to reduce the substantial influence exercised by the monasteries in Heijō kyō (modern day Nara). Although trade continued on unofficial levels, Japanese rulers severed official ties with China. Big changes were taking place in Japanese writing, as well. Although Chinese remained the official written language of the court, Kana, a simplified method of writing, was developed. Each symbol was a simplified version of Chinese characters and represented spoken syllables used in Japanese. The ease of learning led to broader literacy and many poems and stories being written. Giving An Account Of Oneself By Judith Butler Giving an Account of Oneself, a compelling piece of work written by Judith Butler, digs deep into what it means to give an account of oneself and how it is nearly, if not entirely, impossible to do such an activity without becoming a social theorist (Butler 8). Butler states the story of my origin I tell is not one for which I am accountable, and it cannot establish my accountability, (Butler 37) since the story is always changing. We are not able to give our accounts as the accounts we give will always be told in different lights and we, as beings, are always changing as the norms around us change. The sense of being ties into us not being the same person we were when we came into being, and nor are we the same being as when we begin to tell the story of our origin of being. However, other notable influences, such as Levinas, believe that fully exposing our origin of being would act as a sort of surplus (Levinas 79) meaning those we expose our origin of being to will be so overwhelmed with the situation that we would never be able to give an account of ourselves overall. Levinas views coincides with Butlers on the topic of norms and how we will never be able to act outside of norms when he states, the moment I realize that the terms by which I confer recognition are not mine alone... I am, as it were, disposed by the language that I offer (Levinas 26). Giving an Account of Oneself, a compelling piece written by Judith Butler, digs deep into what it means to give an ... • 35. The Importance Of Light And Darkness In Heart Of Darkness Joseph Conrad uses light and darkness in Heart of Darkness to demonstrate that humans are not innately evil but rather a mixture of the two. The good then light can be overpowered by the evil then darkness when the characters refuse to see the value of the individual. Conrad goes on to show that light can embody evil instead of goodness similar to how Dave Eggers uses light and darkness in The Circle. Through this juxtaposition, both Conrad and Eggers highlight the ignorance and refusal of the main character to see the evil within or the evil around. Conrad focuses on the morality of man, his capability to discern right from wrong, and the actions he makes in response to that understanding; however, there is a point where there is no longer a way to return to the good. In conjunction with Marlow s journey in which he sees the gradual growth of darkness, the darkness grows within the heart of those making the journey. The mutual growth is because Africa itself, with its forests, its heat, and its mysteries, is only a symbol of the larger darkness, which is in the heart of man ( Heart of Darkness 111). By the time a person is in the heart of the jungle, the immorality has practically demolished any remaining good. One such person is Kurtz who foolishly expose[s] himself to the wild irresistible allure of the jungle and lo! the darkness [finds] him out ( Heart of Darkness 109). The jungle draws out Kurtz s malice and greed until it consumes him entirely and his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Harlem And The Harlem Renaissance The Great Migrations was the movement or relocation of over 6 million blacks from Southern rural regions to Northern urban areas. Looking to leave behind the racial tension of the south, and with hopes of new job opportunities in the north, many blacks moved in to urban cities such as Chicago, Detroit, and Harlem. Out of these northern metropolises, the most popular was Harlem; here in Manhattan (Harlem) is not merely the largest Negro community in the world, but the first concentration in history of so many diverse element of Negro life (1050). Harlem became the mecca of black people, and between the years of 1920 and the late 1930s it was known as the Harlem Renaissance. The Harlem Renaissance, brought artiest, poets, writers, ... • 37. Feminism in Shirley Jackson’s “the Lottery” Essay Steven Heald Mrs. Mills ENC1102 2.18.13 Feminism in Shirley Jackson s The Lottery Modern criticism of Shirley Jackson s The Lottery has focused almost exclusively on the issues of feminism and gender roles yet some recent reviews tend to classify the writing as feminist literature. They claim the story highlights the negative aspects of patriarchal societies through the telling of the lottery ritual. However many overlook the roles that the women play throughout this story. The purpose of this paper is to examine how Shirley Jackson uses feminism throughout her story and also to show the feminist attitude the women have towards the male dominated society. Shirley Jackson s story is trying to establish the facts around ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is so apparent a character that we are getting forgetful and become stereotypes notwithstanding the fact that we are part of the truth that we condemn. Mrs. Hutchinson for instance, for quite a long time had the insight that the lottery was never the right thing to prevail but he never did anything up until when it dawn to her that it was her turn to face the wrath of lottery did she turn out a loud cry (Oehlschlaeger 250). Male domineering is very much evident in the way events are conducted and that is very clear an observation according to every writer. Women have no say in the choices men make on behalf of and upon them. However, according to Mohammed, if a feminine view is adopted while reading through this story, one would end up holding to the view that women are more powerful than men in the society. Oehlschlaeger (2013) asserts that it is difficult to comprehend the need to bring to an end such brutal acts of celebrations, which demean the value of human life. This is the missing discussion in the other articles and the authors were not able to prescribe a way to see the tradition die out. The discussion all along is centered on how this was conducted and no author has critiqued the same course of celebrations. What is not clear though is whether this lottery will come to an end someday considering the fact some neighboring communities have chosen to let go this tradition. That women ... • 38. Summary Of The Movie Moana The animated Disney film, Moana, was released in November 2016 and directed by Ron Clements and John Musker. The thing that sets this film apart from others is that the princess, Moana, doesn t seek romance to feel full. Instead, this film demands for young children to embrace their family and community while remaining heroic and authentic to their culture. Moana was an original film, emotionally engaging, and it stuck to Disney s style while following its own rules. When I first saw this film, I was relieved by the fact that this Disney princess movie had a romance free plot, which asserts Moana s individuality and resilience unlike any other Disney characters in the rest of the films. The directors took the style of a typical Disney princess film and gave it its own twist. The film consists of the princess learning to lead from her ancestors by respecting her culture and traditions, while continuing to be a courageous young woman, to help keep the community strong. Instead of the princess falling in love with a prince, she fights to discover her true identity throughout the whole film. The definitive themes of cultural appreciation and female empowerment are what sets this Disney film apart from the rest and helps it become a huge success. The striking visual imagination and the catchy tunes, which left me humming as I was leaving the movie theatre, kept me emotionally engaged to this film. The questionable objects personified in the film, which gave a surrealist ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
