18th Century Music
During the 18th century, music was used as a social enhancement on the rising middle class who
showed interest in intellectual ideals of Enlightenment. The rising middle class were people who
would come between the working class and the upper class. Such as craftsman, bankers, and
merchants. These select few decided that since they can now afford some of life s pleasures, that they
would spend it on music that aristocrats and nobility would listen to. While on the other hand, during
the 19th century, music began to develop a more story base theme with a moral lesson. Such as Ballets
and Grand Operas. So basically, during the 18th 19th century, music has evolved from just sound or
noise to a elegant and graceful story played through musical notation with different musical
instruments while advancing the growth of the middle class.
To begin with , the 18th century was the Classical era. In which music had order, symmetry, and
formal restraint. Composers such as Franz Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig
van Beethoven began creating music that pulled away from music that was mainly created for
churches. This secular music they created became entertainment for the aristocrats and the nobility. A
composer by the name of Johann Stamitz organized one of preliminary forms of the classical
orchestra. This orchestra consisted of the string section, the woodwind section, the brass section, and
the percussion section. The largest of the orchestra was called a symphony.

Sleep Deprivation In Central Park
On April 20, 1989 Trisha Meili was sexually assaulted, beaten, and left for dead in Central Park. Meili
had been jogging through Central Park around 10:30 p.m. when she was attacked. The attack resulted
in Meili slipping into a coma that caused her to have no memory of the assault. She went on to make a
full recovery from the assault. Within days of the attack, five teens were taken into custody. Antron
McCray, 15, Kevin Richardson, 14, Yusef Salaam, 15, Raymond Santana, 14, and Kory Wise, 16 all
confessed to law enforcement after hours of psychological pressure during interrogations. The police
told the press that the teens were part of a gang of young men who wilding and attacked joggers and

New York in the spring of 1989 was a city of jangling nerves and rising fears. Violent crime rates were
on an upward trend and crack cocaine was emerging as a major issue in the city. Race relations were
the subject of many of the media s big stories. 1989 was also a mayoral election year. Ed Koch s
biggest competition to win the election was David Dinkins, who was African American. The media
was consumed in racial tensions and adding to it was the mayoral race and various horrific crimes. In
August of 1989, a 16 year old African American teen, Yusef Hawkins, was shot and killed by racist
white men. While racial tensions were only becoming worse, the Central Park jogger case emerged.
Trisha, the victim, was white, middle class, and female. The accused were African American and

Locker Searches Persuasive Essay
Imagine waking up to your blaring alarm clock and getting up to brush your teeth and eat breakfast.
As you get dressed you realize something it s Monday morning and you simply cannot go to school
because you are too afraid. 120,000 kids across the country feel this way every morning. They are
afraid to go to school because they may possibly lose their life to an irresponsible child or teen with a
gun. Locker searches can help these thousands of children and teens to feel safe. Clearly, the safety
and well being of students in America should be the number one priority when considering policies for
locker searches. Everyday 100,000 students altogether in every grade bring guns, knives, and drugs
onto school grounds. Usually children don t

The Clouds by Aristophanes Essay
The Clouds by Aristophanes Relevant in Today s World
The Clouds by Aristophanes, is a play centrally concerned with education. Aristophanes employs
satire to illustrate his conservative beliefs. It is intended to show readers that in the tendency to
philosophical subtleties lies the neglection of the real needs of the Athenians. According to
Aristophanes, philosophical speculation only acts to shake the established foundations of accepted
religion, gods, and ideals of morality.
Specifically, as it was even discused in The Apology,
Aristophanes believed that philosophical attitudes held by the
Sophists enabled those who held them to convince others of wrong or weaker beliefs simply by
sounding as if they knew what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In doing some background research into why this would be, I discovered that Aristophanes religious
undertones could stem from the fact that Athenians were trying to harmonize science and religion.
When new scientific theories were starting to surface and be questioned, many people couldn t even
consider them without sounding as if they were committing treason against the state. Aristophanes
turns to religion in order to remind his audience that both religion and science have to be equally open
to questions, critique, and even in Aristophanes case, satire. This suggestion, that certain things need
to be equally suceptable to to critique and questions can also be seen through the way that
Aristophanes suggests there is both a problem with the accepted model of a well rounded education,
and the newer model brought about by such philopophers as the Sophists. Aristophanes saw the
danger in not questioning an accepted theory or belief. Despite the fact I agree with Johnson in that
Aristophanes may be a
staunch defender of old values, Aristophanes saw that if something widely accepted was left
unquestioned for too long, it would become idle. Basically, an idea that I believe should be applied

The Jilting Of Granny Weatherall Essay
Everywhere you look, our society today is stressed out or even falling into depression. Depending on

of The Jilting of Granny Weatherall by Katherine Anne Porter, Granny Weatherall presents incoherent
consciousness. Walter Mitty from The Secret Life of Walter Mitty by James Thurber, has maladaptive
daydreaming. Both stories are focused on mental illness, but each with a different cause. While the

makes him create his own life and have daydreams in which he is the opposite of what he is in reality.
On their way to town, he had his first daydream as is a brave military commander piloting a
hydroplane, but his wife interrupts by yelling at him, saying: You re driving too fast! . (Thurber,1939)
When she insists on him to make an appointment with his physician, he becomes a famous surgeon at
work, until a parking lot attendant calls his attention to come back to reality. Mitty was pissed and
thought: they think they know everything . (Thurber,1939) Mitty s third daydream is of being the
defendant in a trial, and he is woken by a mental association with dog biscuits, which his wife asked
him to buy. At that moment he gets bothered because, A woman who was passing laughed. He said
Puppy biscuit, she said to her companion. That man said Puppy biscuit to himself. (Thurber,1939) As
he waits for his wife to finish at the hairdresser, he daydreams of being a British pilot willing to
sacrifice his life for his country, and he is again woken by his wife, who was looking for him. In a
moment Walter asked his wife Does it ever occur to you that I am sometimes thinking?

The Minimum Driving Age
The achievement of a driver s license is a rite of passage for a large number of adolescents and young
adults in the United States. Societally, the driver s license is representative of a key to the outside
world, and, in some ways, it is also thought of as being one of the first steps into adulthood. This
perceived importance leads numerous fifteen and sixteen year olds to obtain their license as quickly as
they possibly can which can be dangerous. According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety
(IIHS), drivers who are between sixteen to nineteen years old are at the greatest risk of being involved
in a fatal crash, and sixteen and seventeen year olds also are at nearly twice the risk of eighteen and
nineteen year olds. This has led some experts to call for a raise to the minimum driving age. While this
is an understandable conclusion to come to, this is not necessarily the best course of action. There are
other programs which can decrease the fatal crash rate, which can alleviate the crash concern.
Otherwise, the ability to drive is, as stated above, an important step towards adulthood, and it provides
maturity. Additionally, due to the lack of public transport or other safe ways to travel from place to
place, the ability to drive provides younger Americans with mobility so that they can work, go to
school, and also be with friends. For these reasons, the minimum driving age must stay at sixteen.
In Texas and other states, the minimum age for obtaining a full

The Big Advantage
One of the big advantage is that they can be less expensive compared to other way of measuring the
pH.This means that it helps to reduce the amount of money needed to do the test. This is because you
can buy pack of them for much lower price than a Hi98103 hanna, which cost lot more money to buy
one of them compared to litmus paper. Another advantage is that it is very easy to use and this means
that you do not need a training for you to use it and because it is less complicated means that anyone
can use it without struggle.Whereas, with hi98103 the person need to ensure that they know how to
use this properly , if not there is chance of getting the wrong result. This means people that are trained
could only use them correctly and this limits people who could use whereas, litmus paper anyone can
carry out the test using them. Another advantage is that they do not require a battery and this means
that you do not need to buy a battery to make it work and you do not need to worry about battery
running out or replace the battery after it s used.Whereas , with hi98103 you need battery and this
means that you need to ensure that it is working before using and if it is not working then you need to
replace the battery too. Also if the battery run out during the test meant that you have to repeat the test
again to ensure the result is correct and this will take up time to do.Whereas, you do not have to worry
about the battery running out. Another advantage is that they are portable

The Conflict Between The United States And Other Countries...
Both Israelis and Palestinians have been fighting for the same geographical territory for some time.
Arguments presented by both groups are reasonable as to why the area belongs to them considering
they both have historical and religious foundations in the region. The question that arises from these
claims is which group is right, and what appropriate measures should be taken to resolve the conflict
between the groups. For problems such as this, the U.S foreign secretary is called upon to conduct
negotiations that relate to U.S. foreign affairs, and to promote beneficial economic intercourse
between the United States and other countries. While both Israelis and Palestine s believe they are
right in their argument for territory. Both groups need to be more committed in establishing peace in
their region, resolving their differences so they can partake in a better quality of life. It is important to
understand the underlying beliefs of both groups, in order to gain an understanding of what caused the
conflict between them, and whether there can be a resolution. The State of Israel consists of two
nationalities which are Jews and Palestinians. The Palestinians are an ethnic group made up of modern
descendants of the people who have lived in Palestine over the centuries, and who today are largely
culturally and linguistically considered Arab. The people of Israel (also referred to as the Jewish
People ) trace their origin to Abraham, who established the belief that there

Scott Michael Sander Under The Influence
Under the influence: Paying the price of my father s booze is an essay that was written by the author
Scott Russell Sanders. He expressed his grievous feeling towards his father s drinking habit and used
both comparison and allegories to explain how serious his father s alcoholism was and the negative
effects he had during his childhood. Sander described his father as a demon after he had a drink which
shows the horror that can be caused if a family has an alcoholic father. For instance, in the passage,
Sander says I use the past tense not because he ever quit drinking but because he quit living that
implies how his father s alcoholism behavior ruined his life while he was in his childhood.
Furthermore, there were a lot of disappointments going on in his family due to his father s serious
alcoholism. This is well evident when Sander articulates that He became a stranger, as fearful to us as
any graveyard lunatic, not quite frothing at the mouth but fierce enough, quick tempered, explosive;
who would ease his pain? Not mother, who fussed and pleaded but could not budge him; not my
brother and sister, who were only kids . This clearly reveals the disappointments they had towards
their father s addiction in drinking. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sander himself becomes a workaholic for he can no more save himself through work than he could
save his father. He uses the contradiction between him and his father to show the two totally different
worlds that he lived in. For now, I could not feel how hard he tried to forget the pain of not saving his
father from drinking addiction, but I could feel how he tried his utmost best to be a role model for his

Analysis Of The Man From Snowy River By Banjo Paterson
The Man From Snowy River by Banjo Paterson 1. Andrew Barton Paterson, more commonly known
as Banjo Paterson, was a famous Australian poet who was born on the 17th February, 1863. He spent
his early life at a farm near Yass, in between Melbourne and Sydney. His early education came from a
governess, but as soon as he was able to ride a pony by himself, he was taught at a school in Binalong.
At 11, Paterson went to Sydney Grammar School whilst his family was living in Gladesville. He left
SCS at 16 after failing an examination. From 1885, he started having poetry published in Australian
magazine, The Bulletin, where he first coined the pseudonym Banjo , the name of his favourite horse.
In 1899, Paterson became a war correspondent for multiple newspapers, but in 1908, he decided to
take a break from journalism writing and focus more on his poetry. In WWI, Paterson served as an
ambulance driver and returned to Australia in 1919. His third collection of poetry, Saltbush Bill JP,
was published soon after. Paterson died of a heart attack in 1941, just 12 days before his 77th birthday.
2. The Man from Snowy River tells the story of a horse that escapes from a ranch. The owner offers a
lot of money to capture the prized possession and so many drovers set off to capture the horse. The
drovers pursue the horse across the country, but are defeated by the rough terrain. Then the Man from
Snowy River steps up and charges down the slope. He is lost to view by the rest of the group, but
reappears later, tired and battered, with the horse trailing behind him. 3. The Man from Snowy River
holds plenty of language devices that help capture the mood and setting of the poem. The old man
with his hair as white as snow makes use of simile to help describe one of the men on a horse. The
simile makes the line more interesting and less monotonous by showing what he looks like rather than
straight out telling. The man is made out to be strong and fierce but the similarity of his hair and snow
juxtaposes this power as snow is thought to be delicate and beautiful. Another technique is the
metaphor And the stock horse snuffs the battle with delight. This hints that the drovers must be
prepared for the dangerous job ahead of them, if

The Use of and Elipse to Help Pool Player
Architecture, games, astronomy and medicine have something in common, even if it s not obvious at
first sight. What connects these different areas is called Conic Sections. Where do they come from?
Conic Sections are figures formed by the intersection of a plane and a right circular cone. A conic
section may be a circle, an ellipse, a parabola, or a hyperbola . They were first discovered by a Greek
mathematician, Menaechmus. He wanted to come up with a model that showed all three different
conic sections. With the help of Appollonius, they came up with the Double Napped Cone , which
clearly shows all three different shapes. In this project, I m going to study and analyze specifically the
ellipse. What is an ellipse? It s the set of points on a plane whose sum of the distance of two fixed
points is constant . The main parts on an ellipse are: center, foci and vertices. The focus is the most
important and the most used in real life. The foci determine the shape of the ellipse, therefore the
vertices, endpoints, major axis and minor axis. The ellipse is found mostly in architecture and
astronomy. For example, in London, the St. Paul Cathedral has an elliptical form. Studies have proven
that if two people stand at the two foci, and one of them whispers, the other guy can hear it clearly. In
astronomy, lots of people confuse ellipse with eclipse; THEY ARE TWO COMPLETELY
DIFFERENT THINGS! The ellipse is very useful to astronomers because it defines the distance

Impact On Technology
The advancements in technology have significantly altered our daily lives. As generations pass, it is
remarkable how technology has changed drastically as well as our behaviour towards it. On a global
scale, we are collecting many notable achievements through technology, and due to its many benefits,
our exposure to the wide variety of electronics is gradually increasing. In this day and age, we have
utilized technology more than ever before. Using these platforms more frequently has led to both
positive and negative outlooks in our lives. From using technology, we have discovered a myriad of
effective and dismissive situations regarding our lifestyle. For example, we can now conveniently
interact with each other, but at the same time, we also spend too much time being on our technology.
Although technology can disconnect us from our experiences of reality, it can also provide an
abundance of resources to obtain information from, and it unifies us through multiple forms of
mediums. Firstly, technology has detached us from our experiences with our loved ones and our
interests in the moment. By being increasingly submerged in technology, it has created a rift in our
society. Many people, as stated by Alexandra Tendler of The Odyssey Online, are becoming more and
more immersed in a digital network that is webbed into every aspect of our daily lives. In other words,
we are unaware of how much of our daily actions revolve around technology, and how significantly it

Criminal Justice Criminology Essay
Criminal Justice Theorists attempted to find out a plausible scientific explanation to crime and
criminal behavior of individuals. At the same time, criminology emerged under the impact of other
sciences, such as psychology or sociology, for example. As a result, often criminology theories are
often intertwined with psychological or sociological concepts and theories as well as concepts and
theories from other sciences. The study of key works of criminology theorists can help to understand
better criminology, crime, criminal behavior and causes of crime. In this regard, it is possible the
distinct and persisting debate concerning causes of crimes and explanation of criminal behavior, which

that suggests the notion behind the plain packaging policy is actually an efficient method for

effectiveness of plain packaging, it is crucial to have an understanding of what plain packaging is and
how it works. Harry Clarke and David Pentice s article describes plain packaging as the removal of all
aesthetic features from tobacco packages. Strictly speaking, a set of explicit specifications determines
what a package must have to be considered plain packaged. Some of these provisions include
changing brightly colored cigarette packs to packages that contain standardized drab dark brown

The Long Term Success Of German Discount Grocery Stores
The researcher examined the reasons for the long term success of German discount grocery stores.
German discount grocery stores, such as ALDI, have dominated the German retail food sector and
continue to grow. In many parts of Germany the discount grocers have been so successful that they are
becoming oligopolies. The long term success of the German discount grocers is related to the price of
products, product selection, choice of store location, and size of new stores. Jurgens gives credit to the
creation of discount stores to German discount food giant ALDI. ALDI has gone through great lengths
to standardize its stores and maintain a consistent area per store. Many of ALDI stores are 500 1000
square meters of retail space with large parking lots. The location of discount grocers was determined
to be in peripheral urban locations, on arterial roads, or in commercial business parks. Discount
grocers were also found to choose locations that increase their attractiveness in strategic clusters near
other complementary retailers.
Private label brands are a growing product offering worldwide. The researchers attempt to understand
the factors that have influence the growth and expansion of private label brands. Private label brands
are compared to national brands and the influence the private label brands have on consumers
purchase intentions. Consumers intentions to purchase private label brands are influenced by more
than just prices. The researchers found that private

Reflection Of Visual Art
1a. Central focus for the segment
The central focus of the lesson is for students to demonstrate and show use of space, contrast, and
balance while creating an original idea that displays and the use of positive and negative space in an
equal amount. The purpose is for students to understand the elements and principles of visual arts,
which are value, contrast and balance. Students also learn how these concepts are still being used in
today s society.
1b. Linking skills, knowledge, and context
This is a first year class, so many students are unfamiliar with terms, such as value, contrast, space,
and balance, in terms of art. The students are familiar with the words, but are unfamiliar with how it
pertains to art. New definitions and techniques are introduced in this lesson. Students will continue to
use these new vocabulary terms in future lessons.
In this project students are required to make a total positive space image. To complete this, students
are to use line and shape in their design. The previous projects and lessons in this course focused on
the use of line and shape, so this project reinforces those terms and techniques so students will use
them in future projects.
The last aspect of this assignment is for students to see how the use of space makes interesting
designs. I show the students images of logos and symbols that effectively use positive and negative
space. With this, students can relate to the images and see how these techniques are still being used

Analysis Of A P By John Updike
John Updike s A P , is about a young man s struggle with morality, authority, and freedom. Through a
series of events Sammy witnessed injustice in his workplace leading him to quit his job. When Sammy
quit his job he was taking a stand against authority because he longed for freedom from the A P and
his manager. Sammy made the leap from an adolescent, knowing little about life, into a man facing the
consequences from his actions. John Updike s use of language and actions reveal the internal struggles
and relationships of a young man growing into adulthood. Status is the social or professional standing
of a person, and it is often a unifying factor which John Updike uses to show comparisons of several
different characters. Through Sammy s point of view, several comparisons are shown between the
employees of the A P, even though their ages are different. Firstly, Lengel and Sammy assume the girls
are ignorant and incompetent. Sammy s demeaning view is viewed when he says, Poor kids, I began
to feel sorry for them, they couldn t help it. In Sammy s mind he saw the girls as helpless prey that had
walked into a trap he needed to save them from. The manager saw the way they were dressed and
proceeded to scold them the way a principal in a school scolds disruptive students. Another parallel
between the two men is they both objectify the girls. Lengel is shown to look the girls up and down
before he passes his judgement. Sammy s defense of the girls, while it seems honorable, has ulterior
motives. His hope is the girls hear him quit his job so that he can impress them; this action further
objectifies the girls making them passive objects of passion. In the A P there is another comparison
between some of the repressed customers; the group of women he calls houseslaves and the trio of
girls. Houseslaves are women whose only job was to cook, clean, and care for children. When the trio
passed by these women there is a moment of shock from the girl s appearance, but they look a second
time possibly out of envy for the freedom they lack. The women in this story seem to all lack a voice
and in the 1960s that was not uncommon; men in this time were still seen as the ultimate providers for
the households. Queenie, like

Coccus Shape
After allowing the two unknowns to incubate on the streak plate (Picture B), the next step was to gram

my slide underneath the microscope, it was evident that I had two microbes on my slide. One of the
microbes was gram positive with a coccus shape, while the other was gram negative with a small rode
looking shape to it (Picture A). The next step was to be able to separate them from each other using

I used a sample from that MSA streak plate to inoculate urea, glucose, and catalase. I also checked my
mannitol, galactose, and gelatin samples for my gram negative. Upon inspection, my unknown did
ferment mannitol (Picture F). So I moved onto my gelatin, which was next on my dichotomous key.
Gelatin was still present when I pulled it out of the refrigerator (Picture G). Looking at my
Dichotomous key, this told me my gram negative sample was Serratia marcescens. Galactose was not
fermented either. Using our data table about physical and metabolic characteristics of gram negative
bacteria, it helped confirm that all my tests supported Serratia marcescens as the correct gram negative
unknown. On the last day, I still needed to find my gram positive unknown. When I added H2O2 to
my catalase, nothing happened, there were no bubbles at all (Picture H). Using my dichotomous key,
that meant that my unknown was Enterococcus faecalis. Just to be sure, I looked at my table for
physical and metabolic characteristics for gram positive bacteria. Fermantation of glucose, and not
havinng a presence of urea, helped confirm a that my gram positive unknown was Enterococcus

The Ethics Of The Ethical Systems
The Ethical Systems In ethics, four systems serve as different beliefs concerning our morals:
Relativism Ethics, Consequentialism Ethics, Deontological Ethics, and Virtue Ethics. These four
theories attempt to define what right and wrong should be and how one should handle any situation.
There are many strengths and weaknesses of each view. The goal is to determine which theory is the
best by exploring real world situations and questioning the claims that just don t work out.
RELATIVISM ETHICS
There are two different types of relativistic views: Cultural Relativism and Subjectivism. Cultural
Relativism is the belief that culture defines what is right and wrong. Subjectivism is the belief that the
individual person decides what is right and wrong. Many pros and cons exist with an overall
relativistic view. First, the positive: Someone with this view will obviously be very tolerant and is not
likely to discriminate against a different culture or person. Also, morality depends on a social
experience, instead of being derived from a higher being, morality is derived from the surrounding
people. It is good to know the diversity and experience the many aspects of the world. Although this
might sound like a perfect world for everyone to be tolerant and understanding of one another, there
are many flaws to this theory. One flaw is that with this way of thinking, justice cannot exist. If
someone committed murder, they cannot be punished because they believe murder is right, which

Consequences Associated With Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
There is no consensus regarding the mechanism of manifestation of neurocognitive consequences
associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and their definite underlying process is unknown.1
However, there are some findings and theories about it. In OSA, there are different levels of hypoxia,
which are associated with many factors such as obesity and severity of upper airway obstruction.1 The
hippocampus has a region (CA1), which is more vulnerable and sensitive to the hypoxia that leads to
inflammatory responses (COX 2, TNF a),2 which can bring about endothelial dysfunctions,3
disturbances of the cerebrovascular blood flow,3 and consequently neuronal cell death.3 In addition, it

Another finding is related to Nox2 and NDPH (subtype of Nox2) which cause neural injury, and result

inducible factor 1a (HIF 1a) and increase its level, which may be responsible for the neurocognitive
disorders.2 As well as this, Nox2 affects the level of HIF 2a, which is responsible for anti oxidative
activity, and decreases it that lead to increased oxidative responses and neuronal

Mary s Submissive Attitude Towards Her Husband
Tension can be an everyday occurrence in the lives of those who are married. This tension can occur
through multiple means and can be detrimental to a relationship. For example, tension in marriage can
come from money problems, infidelity, and unexpected circumstances. However, in some
relationships the tension is caused because of a partners personality being overbearing or selfish. This
paper will look at Mary from Steinbeck s The Winter of Our Discontent , and how her lofty and
submissive attitude causes tension in her marriage with Ethan. Mary s loftiness concerning money
causes marital tension because of her unwillingness to admit mistakes. In the book Mary and Ethan

In the scene where Ethan asks Mary for money to give to Danny, she tells Ethan that she is still not
interested in business, and then she willingly give Ethan a thousand dollars from her own money to
him to use (122). Mary in this scene is very submissive to the judgement of Ethan. However, we must
understand that this submissive attitude by Mary is because she doesn t care for her husband or his
moral health. We can understand this because Ethan first asks her if she doesn t care about the
business. This is important to not because Ethan is trying to suggest to Mary that the business he has
planned could be considered suspicious. However, Mary clearly explains that she doesn t want to
know, and that she is apathetic towards her husband s dealings. This is important because this
apathetic attitude towards business reveals marital tension in that she is indifferent towards her
husband s actions. Indifference in a marriage can lead to many problems in life. For example, if a wife
didn t care where her husband was going at night, and later found he was committing adultery, this
could lead to a big fight or a divorce. Furthermore, Mary s attitude of submissiveness towards her
money shows further her indifference towards her husband and his dealings. She willingly grants a
thousand dollars with no questions asked to him. A thousand dollars back then was a lot of money, and
she clearly doesn t care what her husband will do with the money. Furthermore, we understand that
this money was for Danny, so that he could use it to kill himself. This is a serious breach in moral
conduct, but Mary doesn t care at all. She is revealing that, whether or not, Ethan commits a immoral
act, she is more than willing to let him commit that act, and understanding from the previous
paragraph she even encourages his immoral

The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie Analysis
Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad takes place on the Congo River in Africa. Alongside the Congo
River the ivory company has stations of ivory set up and has natives working at it. Kurtz is a rich
European working for the company even though he may seem out of place with the starving Africans.
In the novel The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Jean Brodie, is a teacher at an all girls, catholic private
school and does not actually belong or fit in. She believes in teaching what she wants and thinks it is
more important than learning the school curriculum. Jean Brodie and Kurtz are actually very similar in
that they are in new situations, but face them differently. Kurtz is in a place with natives. Even though
he comes in and makes himself their leader, he is still un doubtfully different then them and tries to fit
in. While Jean Brodie knows she is different and does not try to fit into her surroundings, but does
pretend to at times. When we encounter Kurtz s home for the first time we recognize that there is no
gate, but there are poles with balls on top of them. As it says on page 52 There was no enclosure or
fence of any kind; but there had been one apparently, for near the house half a dozen slim posts
remained in a row, roughly trimmed, and with their upper ends ornamented with round carved balls.
These balls are actually human heads. The natives put human body parts to use after they are dead, but

Key Results Of Testing For Ppp Essay
5.1 Introduction
Following the methodology section, this chapter is going to present the main findings of the PPP test
and relevant information, graphs and tables will be shown as well. The purpose of this part is to
provide key results of testing for PPP in order to facilitate the following detailed discussions. It is no
doubt that this section can be viewed as the core of the whole project because it depends on a variety
of econometric tools to evaluate the financial data. The findings consist of two major aspects: the one
is on the examination of the strong version of PPP, namely APPP; the other is on the test of RPPP, also
known as the weak form of PPP.
5.2 Findings of Testing for APPP
As stated earlier, the APPP is based on the law of one price, stating that the real exchange rate is equal
to one. The formula is written by: (5)
For the convenience of our research, the equation above can be simplified to: (6) where Et represents
the nominal bilateral exchange rate, Pt* is the CPI in Japan, Pt means the Indian CPI.
Before analysing, what should do is to transmute the raw data into the natural logarithm form.
According to Jia and Rathi (2008), the major cause of transformation is that taking natural logarithms
not only indicates the elasticity of economic variables, but eliminates the issue of heteroscedasticity
efficiently. If an econometric model is heteroscedastic, the test of significance for

In the Southern colonies, agriculture such as farming corn and cotton was an essential way of living,
however; the Northern colonies relied on manufacturing trade, but purchased cotton from the Southern
colonies. Although the Northern and Southern colonies had different economic plans, Martin had a
plan for the Native Americans which was to let them suffer starvation. According to Document 2,
Martin two ways to have success in his plan was to keep them from setting corn at home and fishing

Essay about Cathedral by Raymond Carver
Cathedral by Raymond Carver
In Raymond Carver?s ?Cathedral?, the conventional ideas often associated with blindness and sight
are challenged. By juxtaposing his two male characters, Carver is able to effectively explore sight and
its seemingly simplistic relationship with learning and knowledge. As well, he addresses the barriers
imposed by the human tendency to rely on vision as the sole means of experiencing the world.
At the beginning of the story, the narrator?s perception on blind people as individuals who ?moved

he is. As the night wears on the narrator challenges Robert?s blindness in all sorts of ways?drinking,
smoking cigarettes dope, and turning on the TV?which leads to their drawing of the cathedral and the

Carver develops the two main characters in his story to be completely contrasted to each other, in
these characters not only does sight and blindness become conflicted with each other but also does the
issue of knowledge. Carver uses the narrator to represent an individual who sees but cannot ?see? and
Robert as one who can ?see? but lacks the ability to see. Through the interaction between them,
Carver address societies misconception of vision and its connection with knowledge. He brings to the
foreground the idea of sight being the handicap rather then blindness. This is illustrated through the
narrator?s inability to understand his wife and her ?poems? and Roberts ability to do so. Robert?s
attitude of ?learning never ends? and his ability to fearlessly experience new things such as ?dope?
and gain new knowledge regardless of his ?disability? shows that he is not the one that is disabled
(727). Rather it is the hesitance of the narrator that is the handicap and barrier that initially lies
between them.

Impact of Children on Committed Relationships
Impact of Children on Committed Relationships
Christina Smith
Everest University Online
Most of the time, children have a great impact on a relationship. Before children, couples usually tend
to spend a lot of time together and have more energy and money (Wood, 2010). Once children turn the
relationship into a family, couples have less time together along with less energy and money (Wood,
2010). Our communications go from long and stimulating conversations about anything and
everything to mostly about the children. We all know that becoming a parent is hard, but until we do,
we never realize exactly how hard it really is (Wood, 2010). I interviewed five parents, two of them

Brad and Morgan also felt that most communication went from being about them to being about the

about finances and about our son. And we don t seem to be as laid back about situations as we were
before we had our son. We are definitely very quick to jump the gun and go off our rocker because of
so much concern for our son. It is amazing how someone you love so much can make you stress over
them so bad! (personal communication, January 9, 2012). As Wood (2010) discussed, most of the
communications became centered on the children. It seems that for the most part, the level of
communication didn t change, but the subject did. My third question to these parents was, How did
having a child affect your marriage or relationship? Michelle and Season seemed to have almost the
same view. Michelle related, Our marriage was based on a pregnancy to begin with, so after the babies
were born, it was quickly noticed that they were not the fix it to our multitude of problems. They were

Humanitarian Crisis Research Paper
When America claimed its independence from Great Britain in 1776, its founding fathers couldn t
have foreseen that their country would become involved in as many foreign conflicts as have occurred
in the past century. As America became a world power at the turn of the twentieth century due to its
military capacity and economic capabilities, the nation became involved in humanitarian crises which
even involved mass genocide. The U.S. provided aid in these international crises, sometimes even to
the point of supplying military force. Although highly controversial and continually debated, America
s position as a world power will always bring with it the responsibility to aid in humanitarian crises
when it is identified that foreign citizens are denied basic, recognized human rights.
The United States became involved in a major humanitarian crisis in 1934, when Nazi Germany began

Calcium Metabolism and Calcium Homeostasis Essays
Calcium regulation has significant effects on the human body s capacity to maintain homeostasis.
Around 99% of the body s calcium is found within the skeleton in the form of calcium salts. The
remaining 1% is found in blood and controlled within a very narrow range by an elaborate system of
controls to provide for fundamental processes (Marieb Hoehn 2010). Calcium is the most abundant
cation found in human bodies, vital to normal function of a host of processes including: nerve
excitability, hormone secretion, blood clotting, taste transduction, muscle function and cellular
adhesion (Hutchins 2014). This essay will outline some of the more important roles of calcium

A very narrow range of 9 11 mg per dl of calcium in blood is maintained by a negative feedback
hormonal loop (Formation 2013). The thyroid gland secretes parathyroid hormone (PTH) in response
to low calcium in the blood detected by the g protein coupled receptor. PTH activates bone digesting
Osteoclasts, which move along a bone surface, breaking down the matrix and in turn release Ca2+ and
HPO42 . Calcium salts are converted into soluble forms by the hydrochloric acid secreted by the ruffle
border of the Osteoclast. Bones can become so de mineralised that they develop large holes when
blood calcium levels are too low for an extended period of time (Marieb Hoehn 2010). Extracellular
calcium levels between 9 11ng or higher results in the binding of calcium to the receptor inhibiting the

  • 2. 18th Century Music During the 18th century, music was used as a social enhancement on the rising middle class who showed interest in intellectual ideals of Enlightenment. The rising middle class were people who would come between the working class and the upper class. Such as craftsman, bankers, and merchants. These select few decided that since they can now afford some of life s pleasures, that they would spend it on music that aristocrats and nobility would listen to. While on the other hand, during the 19th century, music began to develop a more story base theme with a moral lesson. Such as Ballets and Grand Operas. So basically, during the 18th 19th century, music has evolved from just sound or noise to a elegant and graceful story played through musical notation with different musical instruments while advancing the growth of the middle class. To begin with , the 18th century was the Classical era. In which music had order, symmetry, and formal restraint. Composers such as Franz Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and Ludwig van Beethoven began creating music that pulled away from music that was mainly created for churches. This secular music they created became entertainment for the aristocrats and the nobility. A composer by the name of Johann Stamitz organized one of preliminary forms of the classical orchestra. This orchestra consisted of the string section, the woodwind section, the brass section, and the percussion section. The largest of the orchestra was called a symphony. ... Violent crime rates were on an upward trend and crack cocaine was emerging as a major issue in the city. Race relations were the subject of many of the media s big stories. 1989 was also a mayoral election year. Ed Koch s biggest competition to win the election was David Dinkins, who was African American. The media was consumed in racial tensions and adding to it was the mayoral race and various horrific crimes. In August of 1989, a 16 year old African American teen, Yusef Hawkins, was shot and killed by racist white men. While racial tensions were only becoming worse, the Central Park jogger case emerged. • 5. The Clouds by Aristophanes Essay The Clouds by Aristophanes Relevant in Today s World The Clouds by Aristophanes, is a play centrally concerned with education. Aristophanes employs satire to illustrate his conservative beliefs. It is intended to show readers that in the tendency to philosophical subtleties lies the neglection of the real needs of the Athenians. According to Aristophanes, philosophical speculation only acts to shake the established foundations of accepted religion, gods, and ideals of morality. Specifically, as it was even discused in The Apology, Aristophanes believed that philosophical attitudes held by the Sophists enabled those who held them to convince others of wrong or weaker beliefs simply by sounding as if they knew what ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In doing some background research into why this would be, I discovered that Aristophanes religious undertones could stem from the fact that Athenians were trying to harmonize science and religion. When new scientific theories were starting to surface and be questioned, many people couldn t even consider them without sounding as if they were committing treason against the state. Aristophanes turns to religion in order to remind his audience that both religion and science have to be equally open to questions, critique, and even in Aristophanes case, satire. This suggestion, that certain things need to be equally suceptable to to critique and questions can also be seen through the way that Aristophanes suggests there is both a problem with the accepted model of a well rounded education, and the newer model brought about by such philopophers as the Sophists. Aristophanes saw the danger in not questioning an accepted theory or belief. Despite the fact I agree with Johnson in that Aristophanes may be a staunch defender of old values, Aristophanes saw that if something widely accepted was left unquestioned for too long, it would become idle. Basically, an idea that I believe should be applied more in the world we live in today a traditionally accepted theory ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 8. The Minimum Driving Age The achievement of a driver s license is a rite of passage for a large number of adolescents and young adults in the United States. Societally, the driver s license is representative of a key to the outside world, and, in some ways, it is also thought of as being one of the first steps into adulthood. This perceived importance leads numerous fifteen and sixteen year olds to obtain their license as quickly as they possibly can which can be dangerous. According to the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), drivers who are between sixteen to nineteen years old are at the greatest risk of being involved in a fatal crash, and sixteen and seventeen year olds also are at nearly twice the risk of eighteen and nineteen year olds. This has led some experts to call for a raise to the minimum driving age. While this is an understandable conclusion to come to, this is not necessarily the best course of action. There are other programs which can decrease the fatal crash rate, which can alleviate the crash concern. Otherwise, the ability to drive is, as stated above, an important step towards adulthood, and it provides maturity. Additionally, due to the lack of public transport or other safe ways to travel from place to place, the ability to drive provides younger Americans with mobility so that they can work, go to school, and also be with friends. For these reasons, the minimum driving age must stay at sixteen. In Texas and other states, the minimum age for obtaining a full ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. The Conflict Between The United States And Other Countries... Both Israelis and Palestinians have been fighting for the same geographical territory for some time. Arguments presented by both groups are reasonable as to why the area belongs to them considering they both have historical and religious foundations in the region. The question that arises from these claims is which group is right, and what appropriate measures should be taken to resolve the conflict between the groups. For problems such as this, the U.S foreign secretary is called upon to conduct negotiations that relate to U.S. foreign affairs, and to promote beneficial economic intercourse between the United States and other countries. While both Israelis and Palestine s believe they are right in their argument for territory. Both groups need to be more committed in establishing peace in their region, resolving their differences so they can partake in a better quality of life. It is important to understand the underlying beliefs of both groups, in order to gain an understanding of what caused the conflict between them, and whether there can be a resolution. The State of Israel consists of two nationalities which are Jews and Palestinians. The Palestinians are an ethnic group made up of modern descendants of the people who have lived in Palestine over the centuries, and who today are largely culturally and linguistically considered Arab. • 12. Scott Michael Sander Under The Influence Under the influence: Paying the price of my father s booze is an essay that was written by the author Scott Russell Sanders. He expressed his grievous feeling towards his father s drinking habit and used both comparison and allegories to explain how serious his father s alcoholism was and the negative effects he had during his childhood. Sander described his father as a demon after he had a drink which shows the horror that can be caused if a family has an alcoholic father. For instance, in the passage, Sander says I use the past tense not because he ever quit drinking but because he quit living that implies how his father s alcoholism behavior ruined his life while he was in his childhood. Furthermore, there were a lot of disappointments going on in his family due to his father s serious alcoholism. This is well evident when Sander articulates that He became a stranger, as fearful to us as any graveyard lunatic, not quite frothing at the mouth but fierce enough, quick tempered, explosive; who would ease his pain? Not mother, who fussed and pleaded but could not budge him; not my brother and sister, who were only kids . This clearly reveals the disappointments they had towards their father s addiction in drinking. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 13. Analysis Of The Man From Snowy River By Banjo Paterson The Man From Snowy River by Banjo Paterson 1. Andrew Barton Paterson, more commonly known as Banjo Paterson, was a famous Australian poet who was born on the 17th February, 1863. He spent his early life at a farm near Yass, in between Melbourne and Sydney. His early education came from a governess, but as soon as he was able to ride a pony by himself, he was taught at a school in Binalong. At 11, Paterson went to Sydney Grammar School whilst his family was living in Gladesville. He left SCS at 16 after failing an examination. From 1885, he started having poetry published in Australian magazine, The Bulletin, where he first coined the pseudonym Banjo , the name of his favourite horse. In 1899, Paterson became a war correspondent for multiple newspapers, but in 1908, he decided to take a break from journalism writing and focus more on his poetry. In WWI, Paterson served as an ambulance driver and returned to Australia in 1919. His third collection of poetry, Saltbush Bill JP, was published soon after. Paterson died of a heart attack in 1941, just 12 days before his 77th birthday. 2. The Man from Snowy River tells the story of a horse that escapes from a ranch. The owner offers a lot of money to capture the prized possession and so many drovers set off to capture the horse. The drovers pursue the horse across the country, but are defeated by the rough terrain. Then the Man from Snowy River steps up and charges down the slope. He is lost to view by the rest of the group, but reappears later, tired and battered, with the horse trailing behind him. 3. The Man from Snowy River holds plenty of language devices that help capture the mood and setting of the poem. The old man with his hair as white as snow makes use of simile to help describe one of the men on a horse. The simile makes the line more interesting and less monotonous by showing what he looks like rather than straight out telling. The man is made out to be strong and fierce but the similarity of his hair and snow juxtaposes this power as snow is thought to be delicate and beautiful. Another technique is the metaphor And the stock horse snuffs the battle with delight. This hints that the drovers must be prepared for the dangerous job ahead of them, if ... What connects these different areas is called Conic Sections. Where do they come from? Conic Sections are figures formed by the intersection of a plane and a right circular cone. A conic section may be a circle, an ellipse, a parabola, or a hyperbola . They were first discovered by a Greek mathematician, Menaechmus. He wanted to come up with a model that showed all three different conic sections. With the help of Appollonius, they came up with the Double Napped Cone , which clearly shows all three different shapes. In this project, I m going to study and analyze specifically the ellipse. What is an ellipse? It s the set of points on a plane whose sum of the distance of two fixed points is constant . The main parts on an ellipse are: center, foci and vertices. The focus is the most important and the most used in real life. The foci determine the shape of the ellipse, therefore the vertices, endpoints, major axis and minor axis. The ellipse is found mostly in architecture and astronomy. For example, in London, the St. Paul Cathedral has an elliptical form. Studies have proven that if two people stand at the two foci, and one of them whispers, the other guy can hear it clearly. In astronomy, lots of people confuse ellipse with eclipse; THEY ARE TWO COMPLETELY DIFFERENT THINGS! The ellipse is very useful to astronomers because it defines the distance between the sun ... As generations pass, it is remarkable how technology has changed drastically as well as our behaviour towards it. On a global scale, we are collecting many notable achievements through technology, and due to its many benefits, our exposure to the wide variety of electronics is gradually increasing. In this day and age, we have utilized technology more than ever before. Using these platforms more frequently has led to both positive and negative outlooks in our lives. From using technology, we have discovered a myriad of effective and dismissive situations regarding our lifestyle. For example, we can now conveniently interact with each other, but at the same time, we also spend too much time being on our technology. Although technology can disconnect us from our experiences of reality, it can also provide an abundance of resources to obtain information from, and it unifies us through multiple forms of mediums. Firstly, technology has detached us from our experiences with our loved ones and our interests in the moment. By being increasingly submerged in technology, it has created a rift in our society. Many people, as stated by Alexandra Tendler of The Odyssey Online, are becoming more and more immersed in a digital network that is webbed into every aspect of our daily lives. In other words, we are unaware of how much of our daily actions revolve around technology, and how significantly it is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With the looming possibility of the implementation of plain packaging on cigarette cases, the lobbyist involved uses certain facts to shed light on the seemingly hidden implications of the plain packaging policy. The main concern of the lobbyist and the advantage point lies within the state of unawareness the majority of the population is left in. The lobbyist essentially claims that the plain packaging policy has no proof of being an effective way of diminishing the smoking population. Though the lobbyist asserts that it is invalid, this research essay will introduce compelling evidence and experimental data that suggests the notion behind the plain packaging policy is actually an efficient method for minimizing the popularity of smoking. This paper will also include opposing point of views that argue otherwise and the issue with their allegations. Before analyzing academic sources that convey the effectiveness of plain packaging, it is crucial to have an understanding of what plain packaging is and how it works. Harry Clarke and David Pentice s article describes plain packaging as the removal of all aesthetic features from tobacco packages. Strictly speaking, a set of explicit specifications determines what a package must have to be considered plain packaged. Some of these provisions include changing brightly colored cigarette packs to packages that contain standardized drab dark brown [colors,] with trade names in a standard font (Clarke Pentice). German discount grocery stores, such as ALDI, have dominated the German retail food sector and continue to grow. In many parts of Germany the discount grocers have been so successful that they are becoming oligopolies. The long term success of the German discount grocers is related to the price of products, product selection, choice of store location, and size of new stores. • 28. Analysis Of A P By John Updike John Updike s A P , is about a young man s struggle with morality, authority, and freedom. Through a series of events Sammy witnessed injustice in his workplace leading him to quit his job. When Sammy quit his job he was taking a stand against authority because he longed for freedom from the A P and his manager. Sammy made the leap from an adolescent, knowing little about life, into a man facing the consequences from his actions. John Updike s use of language and actions reveal the internal struggles and relationships of a young man growing into adulthood. Status is the social or professional standing of a person, and it is often a unifying factor which John Updike uses to show comparisons of several different characters. Through Sammy s point of view, several comparisons are shown between the employees of the A P, even though their ages are different. Firstly, Lengel and Sammy assume the girls are ignorant and incompetent. Sammy s demeaning view is viewed when he says, Poor kids, I began to feel sorry for them, they couldn t help it. In Sammy s mind he saw the girls as helpless prey that had walked into a trap he needed to save them from. The manager saw the way they were dressed and proceeded to scold them the way a principal in a school scolds disruptive students. Another parallel between the two men is they both objectify the girls. Lengel is shown to look the girls up and down before he passes his judgement. Sammy s defense of the girls, while it seems honorable, has ulterior motives. His hope is the girls hear him quit his job so that he can impress them; this action further objectifies the girls making them passive objects of passion. In the A P there is another comparison between some of the repressed customers; the group of women he calls houseslaves and the trio of girls. Houseslaves are women whose only job was to cook, clean, and care for children. When the trio passed by these women there is a moment of shock from the girl s appearance, but they look a second time possibly out of envy for the freedom they lack. The women in this story seem to all lack a voice and in the 1960s that was not uncommon; men in this time were still seen as the ultimate providers for the households. Queenie, like ... The Ethics Of The Ethical Systems The Ethical Systems In ethics, four systems serve as different beliefs concerning our morals: Relativism Ethics, Consequentialism Ethics, Deontological Ethics, and Virtue Ethics. These four theories attempt to define what right and wrong should be and how one should handle any situation. There are many strengths and weaknesses of each view. The goal is to determine which theory is the best by exploring real world situations and questioning the claims that just don t work out. RELATIVISM ETHICS There are two different types of relativistic views: Cultural Relativism and Subjectivism. Cultural Relativism is the belief that culture defines what is right and wrong. Subjectivism is the belief that the individual person decides what is right and wrong. Many pros and cons exist with an overall relativistic view. First, the positive: Someone with this view will obviously be very tolerant and is not likely to discriminate against a different culture or person. Also, morality depends on a social experience, instead of being derived from a higher being, morality is derived from the surrounding people. It is good to know the diversity and experience the many aspects of the world. In the scene where Ethan asks Mary for money to give to Danny, she tells Ethan that she is still not interested in business, and then she willingly give Ethan a thousand dollars from her own money to him to use (122). Mary in this scene is very submissive to the judgement of Ethan. However, we must understand that this submissive attitude by Mary is because she doesn t care for her husband or his moral health. We can understand this because Ethan first asks her if she doesn t care about the business. This is important to not because Ethan is trying to suggest to Mary that the business he has planned could be considered suspicious. However, Mary clearly explains that she doesn t want to know, and that she is apathetic towards her husband s dealings. This is important because this apathetic attitude towards business reveals marital tension in that she is indifferent towards her husband s actions. Indifference in a marriage can lead to many problems in life. For example, if a wife didn t care where her husband was going at night, and later found he was committing adultery, this could lead to a big fight or a divorce. Furthermore, Mary s attitude of submissiveness towards her money shows further her indifference towards her husband and his dealings. She willingly grants a thousand dollars with no questions asked to him. A thousand dollars back then was a lot of money, and she clearly doesn t care what her husband will do with the money. As it says on page 52 There was no enclosure or fence of any kind; but there had been one apparently, for near the house half a dozen slim posts remained in a row, roughly trimmed, and with their upper ends ornamented with round carved balls. These balls are actually human heads. The natives put human body parts to use after they are dead, but the norm in Europe is not to do that. Now that Kurtz comes to the ... • 35. Key Results Of Testing For Ppp Essay 5.1 Introduction Following the methodology section, this chapter is going to present the main findings of the PPP test and relevant information, graphs and tables will be shown as well. The purpose of this part is to provide key results of testing for PPP in order to facilitate the following detailed discussions. It is no doubt that this section can be viewed as the core of the whole project because it depends on a variety of econometric tools to evaluate the financial data. The findings consist of two major aspects: the one is on the examination of the strong version of PPP, namely APPP; the other is on the test of RPPP, also known as the weak form of PPP. 5.2 Findings of Testing for APPP As stated earlier, the APPP is based on the law of one price, stating that the real exchange rate is equal to one. The formula is written by: (5) For the convenience of our research, the equation above can be simplified to: (6) where Et represents the nominal bilateral exchange rate, Pt* is the CPI in Japan, Pt means the Indian CPI. Before analysing, what should do is to transmute the raw data into the natural logarithm form. According to Jia and Rathi (2008), the major cause of transformation is that taking natural logarithms not only indicates the elasticity of economic variables, but eliminates the issue of heteroscedasticity efficiently. If an econometric model is heteroscedastic, the test of significance for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Differences Between The Northern And Southern Colonies In the Southern colonies, agriculture such as farming corn and cotton was an essential way of living, however; the Northern colonies relied on manufacturing trade, but purchased cotton from the Southern colonies. Although the Northern and Southern colonies had different economic plans, Martin had a plan for the Native Americans which was to let them suffer starvation. According to Document 2, Martin two ways to have success in his plan was to keep them from setting corn at home and fishing and keeping them from trading for corn. This plan happened before slavery started in Jamestown. With this being said, even though the Northern colonies traded raw materials; the Southern colonies had larger plantations. In contrast, the Southern colonies had indentured servants in their region, however, slaves began to rush into the southern colonies once plantations came about. However, both the Northern and the Southern colonies took advantage of indentured servants with their land. In this case, Native Americans picture their economies differently. According to Document 2, Martin said This course being taken they have no means, but must yield to obedience, or fly to bordering neighbors who neither will rescue them nor indeed are able, for they have but grounds cleared for their own use. The Pamunkey, which was part of a tribe in the Southern colonies, were greedy colonists due to the fact that they wanted power over their own land. However, in Document 3, Miantonomoh states But, brothers, since these English have seized upon our country, they cut down the grass with scythes, and the trees with axes. • 37. Essay about Cathedral by Raymond Carver Cathedral by Raymond Carver In Raymond Carver?s ?Cathedral?, the conventional ideas often associated with blindness and sight are challenged. By juxtaposing his two male characters, Carver is able to effectively explore sight and its seemingly simplistic relationship with learning and knowledge. As well, he addresses the barriers imposed by the human tendency to rely on vision as the sole means of experiencing the world. At the beginning of the story, the narrator?s perception on blind people as individuals who ?moved slowly and never laughed? reflect not only his but also the views generally shared by society (720). The uneasiness experienced by the narrator at the prospect of ?[a] blind man in [his] house? is a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... he is. As the night wears on the narrator challenges Robert?s blindness in all sorts of ways?drinking, smoking cigarettes dope, and turning on the TV?which leads to their drawing of the cathedral and the narrator?s ?awakening.? Carver develops the two main characters in his story to be completely contrasted to each other, in these characters not only does sight and blindness become conflicted with each other but also does the issue of knowledge. Carver uses the narrator to represent an individual who sees but cannot ?see? and Robert as one who can ?see? but lacks the ability to see. Through the interaction between them, Carver address societies misconception of vision and its connection with knowledge. He brings to the foreground the idea of sight being the handicap rather then blindness. This is illustrated through the narrator?s inability to understand his wife and her ?poems? and Roberts ability to do so. Robert?s attitude of ?learning never ends? and his ability to fearlessly experience new things such as ?dope? and gain new knowledge regardless of his ?disability? shows that he is not the one that is disabled (727). Rather it is the hesitance of the narrator that is the handicap and barrier that initially lies between them. • 39. Impact of Children on Committed Relationships Impact of Children on Committed Relationships Christina Smith Everest University Online Most of the time, children have a great impact on a relationship. Before children, couples usually tend to spend a lot of time together and have more energy and money (Wood, 2010). Once children turn the relationship into a family, couples have less time together along with less energy and money (Wood, 2010). Our communications go from long and stimulating conversations about anything and everything to mostly about the children. We all know that becoming a parent is hard, but until we do, we never realize exactly how hard it really is (Wood, 2010). I interviewed five parents, two of them being a married couple, on how becoming parents impacted ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Brad and Morgan also felt that most communication went from being about them to being about the baby. Morgan told me, I think our communication changed because most of our conversations are about finances and about our son. And we don t seem to be as laid back about situations as we were before we had our son. We are definitely very quick to jump the gun and go off our rocker because of so much concern for our son. It is amazing how someone you love so much can make you stress over them so bad! (personal communication, January 9, 2012). As Wood (2010) discussed, most of the communications became centered on the children. It seems that for the most part, the level of communication didn t change, but the subject did. My third question to these parents was, How did having a child affect your marriage or relationship? Michelle and Season seemed to have almost the same view. Michelle related, Our marriage was based on a pregnancy to begin with, so after the babies were born, it was quickly noticed that they were not the fix it to our multitude of problems. They were blessings to us both, but could not repair something that was bad from the beginning (personal communication, January 10, 2012), and Season said, Having a child changed our relationship. He seemed to become jealous of the baby for a while. He still got to do whatever he wanted and I got stuck at home taking care of the baby. • 40. Humanitarian Crisis Research Paper When America claimed its independence from Great Britain in 1776, its founding fathers couldn t have foreseen that their country would become involved in as many foreign conflicts as have occurred in the past century. As America became a world power at the turn of the twentieth century due to its military capacity and economic capabilities, the nation became involved in humanitarian crises which even involved mass genocide. The U.S. provided aid in these international crises, sometimes even to the point of supplying military force. Although highly controversial and continually debated, America s position as a world power will always bring with it the responsibility to aid in humanitarian crises when it is identified that foreign citizens are denied basic, recognized human rights. The United States became involved in a major humanitarian crisis in 1934, when Nazi Germany began openly discriminating against its Jewish citizens. It was only after the U.S. allocated military forces and provided 4.5 billion dollars in financial assistance to Syrian refugees that the international community became involved. European nations such as France and New Zealand are continuing to accept 24,850 Syrian refugees in the next three years. The U.S. will alone accept 10,000 refugees next year. • 41. Calcium Metabolism and Calcium Homeostasis Essays Calcium regulation has significant effects on the human body s capacity to maintain homeostasis. Around 99% of the body s calcium is found within the skeleton in the form of calcium salts. The remaining 1% is found in blood and controlled within a very narrow range by an elaborate system of controls to provide for fundamental processes (Marieb Hoehn 2010). Calcium is the most abundant cation found in human bodies, vital to normal function of a host of processes including: nerve excitability, hormone secretion, blood clotting, taste transduction, muscle function and cellular adhesion (Hutchins 2014). This essay will outline some of the more important roles of calcium metabolism. The essay will begin by discussing how calcium provides ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A very narrow range of 9 11 mg per dl of calcium in blood is maintained by a negative feedback hormonal loop (Formation 2013). The thyroid gland secretes parathyroid hormone (PTH) in response to low calcium in the blood detected by the g protein coupled receptor. PTH activates bone digesting Osteoclasts, which move along a bone surface, breaking down the matrix and in turn release Ca2+ and HPO42 . Calcium salts are converted into soluble forms by the hydrochloric acid secreted by the ruffle border of the Osteoclast. Bones can become so de mineralised that they develop large holes when blood calcium levels are too low for an extended period of time (Marieb Hoehn 2010). Extracellular calcium levels between 9 11ng or higher results in the binding of calcium to the receptor inhibiting the secretion of PTH. Without the bodies capacity to detect changes in ECF calcium concentration, voltage gated ion channels can become unstable and result in hyperactivity of muscle and nerve cells (Humoral Regualtion 2013). According to the Harvard health publication: Calcium beyond the bones, fundamental processes such as growth may be underdeveloped or calcium may be deposited in soft tissues such as the heart and lungs when there is excess or inadequate levels of calcium (Calcium 2010).
