I chose to evaluate my home congregation of Beautiful Savior in Omaha, which was an interesting
challenge. Having grown up in the church as the son of a DCE (now a pastor) there, I was already
pretty familiar with the educational opportunities provided, but it was interesting to take a much
deeper look at it and evaluate the shortcomings as well. The Dirt on Learning offered a strong basis
for the critique of educational ministry from the perspective of the parable of the sower, making
parallels with how it relates directly to education. Beautiful Savior is a unique church in the LCMS. It
is a large, contemporary, and progressive church that is pushing the boundaries of ministry in some

There are many approaches to management that organizations can use. Managerial theories are based
on historical approaches or historical theories. Many organizations use more than one approach that
may or may not be effective. Several decades ago researchers were attempting to explain the nature of
managing from six different points of view: management process, empirical approach, human
behavior, social system, decision theory, and mathematics theory.
The organization that I work for, the City of Lilburn, does not use just one approach to management.
One of the management approaches that the city uses is the social system approach. Vilfredo Pareto, a
sociologist, and Chester Barnard were the pioneers of this theory. Pareto came up with the idea that
human relationships were social systems (Koontz, 1980). His work made an impression and
influenced Chester Barnard.
Barnard, during his study, noticed executives operating in cooperative social systems that he names
organizations. Social systems are the cooperative interaction of ideas, forces, desires and thinking of
two or more people. This theory later was applied to many groups and cooperatives (Koontz, 1980).
With this approach organizations are essentially a cultural system that is composed of people who

The concept of race is an idea that has been socially and historically created. However, as we look

In the book, Tuesdays with Morrie the readers follow the lives and relationship of Morrie Schwartz
and Mitch Albom. Morrie was a professor in Brandeis University where Mitch attended. The story

strong relationship. This friendship begins when Mitch finds out Morrie is sick and his health is

about life as a young adult. As Erickson describes this stage as that of being intimacy vs isolation, a
period in life where adults seek love and companionship and begin to settle down and start a family.
This is evident as Mitch describes his life as a young adult he can relate with the feelings of isolation.
Albom states the world, I discovered was not all that interested (p.14). This is when Mitch realizes
that his life has changed as to what it was when he was in college. He has lost touch with his old
friend and now he has a variety of responsibilities. His dreams of being a famous musician have
ended. He has discovered after many years that he must move on and he decides to return to school
and eventually gets a good job. He describes meeting his soon to be wife as he associates this time
with Erickson theory of seeking intimacy and a satisfying relationship. Albom seeks companionship
