Initial Thoughts The meaning of this poem didn t immediately grab me until I read the lines Half drew
him in, half lured him in that was when I realized that Goethe was talking about being lured in by a
siren or a nixe. At first the poem speaks to me about love at first sight. That is what I pulled from it at
the beginning but as I said above, that one line threw me into it being about a siren s song. Luring you

enough to know the importance of its life cycle and the process it will undertake as it begins to perish.

Connell writes, The general was saving him for another day s sport! The Cossack was the cat; he was
the mouse. Then it was that Rainsford knew the full meaning of terror (Connell 34). This quotes
shows Rainsford being terrified by his plight for the first time. The audience is left wondering if
Zaroff s mind games will be Rainsford s Achilles heel. Knowing that Rainsford is a dynamic character
adds suspense because he has to change physically and mentally to survive, and the audience doesn t
know if he is capable of that. If a character doesn t change then the story is predictable and simple.
Dynamic characters are a necessity in creating suspense and engaging an audience. Not only do
dynamic characters create suspense, but they also make for a more complete story. Another way is that
dynamic characters make for a more complete story. Had Beatrice not had been a dynamic character
there would be no story. Once every year all sixteen year olds must select a faction in which they will
dedicate their lives to, and put faction over family. Beatrice must decide staying with her family or be
who she really is. Beatrice is also hiding a life threatening secret. What starts her change is when
Beatrice chooses to switch out of her faction, Abnegation, and into Dauntless, and when she changes
her name to Tris. In the beginning of the book Tris is dependent on others and is obedient.

Theme Between The Great Gatsby And The Truman Dream
The American Dream, a concept of which every American is granted equal opportunity allowing the
highest aspirations to be achieved and every person to live a better, richer and fuller life. Throughout
films The Great Gatsby and The Truman Show directors Baz Luhrman and Peter Weir both depict a
message to society presenting the unfulfilling reality of this pursuit. Both directors present this idea
through the use of stylistic features, film techniques and conventions including setting, costuming,
characterisation, structure, style, camera angles, sound and lighting.
When comparing settings between The Great Gatsby and The Truman Show both films are very
different however both communicate the same idea of the perfect lifestyle of the American dream.
Luhrman uses a wealthy 1920 s lifestyle set in Long Island, New York City, dividing the island into
two areas known as the west egg and the east egg which can also be represented as old money and
new money. In the 1920 s and still to this day Long Island was home of the rich and famous upper
class citizens. Early in the film the audience is presented with an establishing shot of Gatsby s
mansion. Nick describes Gatsby s mansion by saying, The one on my right was a colossal affair by
any standard it was a factual imitation of some Hotel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side,
spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool, and more than forty acres
