Masthead When looking at Mixmags title it is positioned on the top of the magazine it
(logo) is a clear and bold text . This decision is important for the magazine to make
the title eye catching and stand out at the audience in order to recognise the
text as the title which has become a logo. It is striking yet fascinating as
they are trying to sell the brand to the audience while also trying to
establish to the audience they are well-known in the dance music scene
magazine brand.
Judging by the way they are trying to attract the dance fans to the mag they
have when designing the logo for the letter “I” made what looks like a
turnaround table feel to it. By doing this they have made the logo stand out
and be attractive while also creating a trademark which has continued to be
used on Mixmag products.
They also when considering this layout for the magazine have considered
the background of the magazine. This is important because in this
particular magazine the background is Black therefore to make this
masthead standout and be attractive they have chosen white, which is the
right colour because it catches the audience’s attention. While in the
process they have created a particular theme of white, red and black which
in itself is an individual theme which the brand Mixmag have been known
to do in every edition of the magazine. This also adds to the UPS of Mixmag
as not all magazine mastheads are the same colour as they have to consider
the layout of the magazine.
Dateline Dateline again is an important feature in this magazine Mixmag and can be
seen at the bottom right hand corner. The reason why this is featured at
this position is because in this magazine they have had to accommodate
room for the cd, while placing near the barcode. This has great importance
as the dateline plays a pivotal role in the subscription service the magazine
offers, as it tells the audience the date of publication i.e. in this case the
month and year. By having this information showcased it makes this a
monthly magazine subscription. This is important because if for any reason
someone wants a specific copy of the magazine from that particular month
or year all have to do is at look at the year and month and get that copy.
Another important tool the dateline provides the cost which is £4.40 which
lets the person know how much the magazine costs.
The font is small and the colour again is white to accommodate the
background. This is also important because it can be handy if someone
wants a specific special edition as the website is also featured on the
magazine as another way of contacting the magazine. Finally the dateline
provides an overseas price which is crucial for its international audience
while also if the audience is on holiday when the new edition comes out
they can purchase the magazine there and then.
Main image The main image again is another pivotal convention within any magazine
and this magazine is no acceptation. When looking at this main image of DJ
Chuckie, the first thing you see is a huge striking image that takes up the
middle of the A4 cover with his hands folded and sunglasses on. Sunglasses
are a classic convention for the dance genre therefore this creates a persona
of someone that is cool, slick and a well-known superstar towards the
audience. Also within the main image is a feel of money and wealth because
he is wearing a luxury watch, which shows he has a lot of money, power
and influence on the audience.
2. Within the main image a theme is being created such as he is wearing a
black jacket and red top. This is relevant because this is being transferred
into their layout decision with what the colour scheme of the cover lines
will be such as the theme for the front cover is red, white and black. This
decision of theme makes the front cover so striking and this cover stands
out as he the artist is immersing himself into the cover.
Another important point to make about the main cover is that the artist
covers parts of the masthead which is their regular convention as Mixmag
have established themselves as a well-known brand and are able to make
this decision regarding this. Finally when looking at the artist within the
main image one particular thing stands out is his face is not directly facing
the camera another important decision being made about the pose which
has worked successfully as we are able establish that he seems to have a big
ego and he is too good as he wants to grab this attention which makes us
the audience talk about him which is good publicity for him.
Model credit Within the main cover line they can contain the name of the artist and
photographer. But the convention route for this is to display separately this
information such as underneath the cd position , as it is where this
information can be seen or inside the magazine.
The font for this is relevant so that the information is small but not too
small to read it. This feature has also the name and the location where they
were photographed.
Coverlines Cover lines are instrumental in any magazine as they provide a contents
style for the audience of what’s to be expected in a magazine such as
whether its competitions or latest festival news. They are influenced
through the theme being influenced by colours of the layout such as in this
case the theme is red, white and black . The effect these colours have is that
they help make these titles catch the audience attention which is the
purpose of the cover lines such as the word “Plus” is in bold print . Which
highlights the importance of the contents such as their competitions and
latest clubbing news .
As featured within the magazine style Mixmag often you find in all their
magazine covers they feature a plus cover line which covers headlining
artists within the magazine which brings more value to the magazine as
high profiles guests are being interviewed in the magazine. Again the red,
white and black theme is continuing in mixing up the tempo of the design of
the cover to add creativity and flair. One in particular example “ The
Mixmag drugs survey” is in bold print as they are highlighting the
seriousness and shocking information regarding the subject to catch the
audiences attention.
Main cover Main cover line has to be striking and catch the attention of their audience
line with this magazine and does this very successfully. When looking at the
main cover line it goes across the chest of the main artist in this case DJ
Chuckie. This is significant as it is poisoned facing the audience stating look
at me. The title continues its theme of red, black and white with the title
rather large with it being red making it eye catching and vibrant. This main
cover line is often placed central within the magazine. When looking at the
main cover line there are smaller fonts used surrounding the main title such
as “Most relentless Superstar DJ” which complements the artist while also
building up the artists reputation among the audience.
3. Left third The left third is often left blank in order to allow for full exposure of the
coverlines such as in this particular issue there is a sign saying “special
issue” which makes this eye catching to the audience as it is continuing with
their theme of using white, red and black which makes this effective. With
the cd positioned on the left third it means the room must be left for cd with
minor cover-lines featured behind the cd.
Bar code The barcode is an vital important feature to the magazine and can be found
at the bottom right hand corner and the purpose of this is that allows the
purchase of the product to go through which contributes to profits to the
magazine Mixmag while also it contributes to investment of new technology
Selling line Selling line is the most important point on the front cover as they the
Mixmag magazine needs to have a more unique selling line so it is more
popular and therefore it sells more copies. Within the magazine cover they
state “ They are the world’s biggest dance music and clubbing magazine”
which is a unique title that informs the audience they have chosen a well-
known source for dance music.
This title is featured on all of Mixmag magazines which has become there
trademark because this font is small yet visible to see and read above the
masthead. Again this continues the theme red, black and white theme, while
still trying to attract the audience to the mag.
