3. MASTHEAD
The masthead is the largest piece of
writing on the page, which is one of the
main pieces of information that should be
recognised on the front cover of a
magazine. The masthead is covered by
the main central image, this maybe due to
the magazine being popular and well-
known. Moreover, this maybe due to the
fact that the audience will be able to
recognise the magazine without needing
the full masthead. Additionally, the colour
red could indicate that this magazine is
targeted towards indie listeners. This
colour could have been used to entice the
reader, which could allow them to feel
involved within the magazine. The font
that has been used is san serif, due to
there being flicks coming off the
masthead.
4. MAIN IMAGE
The main image is the largest image
on the front cover of a magazine. A
close up shot has been captured
and the celebrity is giving off direct
mode of address. This is effective as
it makes the audience feel more
engaged and involved to carry on
reading the magazine. The main
image is covering the masthead,
which could imply that the magazine
is well known and popular.
5. MAIN COVER LINE
The main cover line is the second
largest piece of information on the
front cover of a magazine. The
colour of the main cover line is
black which could be giving off an
indication of the indie genre; this
could entice the reader. The main
cover line is big, bold and eye
catching, which is easily noticeable
towards the audience, which would
be appealing to them. This allows
the audience to be aware of what
the article is going/could be about.
Moreover, the main cover line
anchors the main image.
6. COVER LINES AND SUB LINES
The Cover Lines and Sub Lines
are on the right hand side of
the magazine allowing the
audience to be aware of
smaller stories that are issued
inside of the magazine. Each
cover line illustrates a famous
artist or a piece of information
that is well known to attract a
wider audience. These are
featured on the front cover of
the magazine, which allows the
audience to be aware that
there will be interesting stories
about these people featuring
inside of the magazine.
7. POSITIONING STATEMENT
The magazine I have chosen does not
have a positioning statement however,
most music magazine will contain one. I
have found another example from a Q
magazine which illustrates ‘THE UK’S
BIGGEST MUSIC MAGAZINE’. The
purpose of the positioning statement is to
connect a simple but memorable phrase
to the magazines brand, which
promotes/helps the magazine to be sold.
If the positioning statement is unique,
then this could help promote the
magazine for distribution.
8. COLOUR SCHEME
The colour scheme consists of being
white, red and black which could give
off a sense of an indie genre. The
colour red and white is very bright and
appealing, which could be illustrated
to brighten up the magazine and to
make it stand out more. This could
catch the audiences attention, which is
very eye catching due to the vibrant
colour. However, the colour black
could illustrate a dark side towards the
magazine which is quite unusual for
an indie magazine. This could been
seen as being unique, as this is
something that wouldn't usually
appear on a indie magazine however,
some may have the colour black on
them.
9. BUZZWORDS
Buzzwords such as ‘plus’,
‘exclusive’ and ‘free’ are used to
engage the audience. This could
entice the reader to buy the
magazine as they may feel as if
they’re getting something extra.
This could help promote the
magazine, as this could intrigue
the audience.
10. PRICE, DATE, BARCODE, ISSUE NUMBER & WEB
ADDRESS
The barcode, date, price, issue number and web address are featured
to the bottom right hand corner on the front cover however, they can
be found at the top of the page above or below the masthead. These
features are highly important as the audience need to be aware of
how much the magazine costs, whether it is outdated or the new
issue available and whether it is the correct issue. The web address is
essential as the audience can find out any further information on the
website and the barcode is another important feature as this allows
the audience to purchase the magazine. All these features are
illustrated really small as this is not the main focus on the magazine.
