This document outlines the components of a balanced literacy model, including read aloud, modelled writing, shared reading, guided reading, interactive writing, word study, and independent reading and writing. It describes strategies for each component, such as exposing students to new vocabulary during read aloud, modeling writing skills during modelled writing, and providing feedback and expanding ideas during guided writing. Recommended digital tools to support each literacy activity are also included, such as interactive writing apps, ebooks, and drawing apps.

2. Reading Aloud
•Reading Aloud is very important for a child’s
developing literacy and should be a part of every
individual or group lesson.
•Students are exposed to new vocabulary,
concepts, different kinds of story structures,
fluency and expression.
•A brief game related to the reading, or to
practice a skill (10 - 15 minutes) may be included in
the lesson.

3. Modelled Writing
• Model writing through mini lessons such as
teaching one skill at a time to help them master
and use independently.
• Pick up a sentence or short paragraph to reveal
the complex combination of processes that have
formed it.

4. Shared Reading
• Students join in or share the reading of a book or
other text while guided and supported by a teacher.
• The teacher often uses big books with enlarged
print and illustrations.
• Students can draw a scene from the book using a
drawing app or write a different story ending with a
twist using a writing app.

5. Shared Writing
• The teacher transcribes the entire text while
engaging students in a rich discussion about how
the text should be composed.
• Students can engage in adding adjectives, adverbs
etc… Taught to small groups or a whole class in
briskly paced, 5- to 20-minute lessons.
• Ask students to research information, videos
etc…. about the topic to extend their background
and language knowledge.

6. Word Study
• Knowledge of words continues to be one of the
best predictors of reading achievement, yet
vocabulary appears to be diminishing in today’s
students.
• Rather than all students learning the same words
at the same time, in the same manner, students can
be engaged in a wide variety of games that appeal
to visual, auditory and tactile senses.

7. Interactive Writing
• Interactive writing provides an active learning
experience to develop writing skills.
• The teacher talks with the students to establish
what they will write The text is constructed by
the pupils with the teacher giving help.
• Interactive writing is all in all a very effective way
for teachers to help students begin to learn to
write.

8. Guided Reading
• Guided reading gives students the chance to apply
the strategies they already know to new text.
• The text is about right for students in the group. It
is not too easy, yet not too hard, and offers a variety
of challenges to help readers become flexible
problem solvers.

9. Guided Reading
• They focus on meaning but use problem-solving
strategies to figure out words they don’t know, deal
with difficult sentence structure, and understand
concepts or ideas they have never before
encountered in print.

10. Guided Writing
• In guided writing, teachers continually provide
feedback, redirection and expansion of ideas.
• It works well to put similar needs together and
address them at the same time.
• Teacher utilizes prompts and clues to help develop
ideas and organization.

• Working with small groups works well for teaching
creative writing as so many children struggle with
formulating ideas.
• During a writer's workshop, walk around the
classroom and stop at students’ desks and have
them read what they are working on and ask what
they might be struggling with

12. Independent Reading
• Independent reading allows students the chance to
“practice” the strategies they’ve learned through
guided reading, shared reading and teacher read
alouds.
• Students can read confidently and are actually
excited about their ability to read with level
appropriate materials.

13. Independent Reading
• They have greater control over what they want to
learn as they select their reading books. Reading
becomes a priority when students have some
ownership in the reading process.

16. Independent Writing (15 – 30 mins)
• Students apply the mini-lesson writing skill or
strategy to their own writing and continue in-
process work on their writing.
• Students may engage in peer review.
• As students work independently, the teacher
confers with other students or small group for a
short targeted writing instruction.
• The teacher may also work on a piece of writing.

17. Independent Writing (15 – 30 mins)
Sharing (5-15 minutes):
•Students read their work aloud to the entire class
or to a partner and elicit feedback in the form of
praise, questions, or polish.
• Praise communicates to the writer something that
he has done well and should keep in the piece of
writing.

Sharing (5-15 minutes):
•Questions address areas of the writing that are
unclear or confusing and may lead to the polish or
recommendation for improvement.
•Offering feedback should be modelled explicitly and
offered respectfully.
