This presentation outlines an upcoming unit plan for 1st grade students focused on comprehension and singular/plural nouns. Students will work in groups to discuss stories, fill out graphic organizers, and identify nouns. The teacher will introduce singular and plural nouns, monitor groups, and mediate conflicts. Parents are expected to encourage reading at home and work with students on identifying nouns. The goals are for students to discuss story elements, use nouns correctly in sentences, and learn collaboration skills through group work.
2. OVERVIEW FOR UPCOMING UNIT PLAN
This presentation will inform you about the topics we will be covering
in class. Our project is on comprehension and singular/plural
nouns. The purpose of this project is to give students the
opportunity to experiment with group work and learn how to
collaborate together.
We will be guided by the following standards:
• Students will be able to discuss the sequence of events and
characters in a story.
• Students will learn how to correctly identify singular and plural
nouns

Essential Question: Why is it important to pay attention
while reading?
Unit Question: What senses do you use while paying
attention?
Content Question: What is the definition of "attention"?

• Fill out graphic organizer to display comprehension of story
• Students will be responsible for defining a singular and plural
noun.
• Create simple sentences with singular and plural nouns
• Discuss with group members and correctly label objects in room
as singular or plural nouns.
6. EXPECTING ROLES OF THE TEACHER
• The teacher will introduce the lesson with a fun, instructional
chart on singular and plural nouns. We will read a story and
do a quick group discussion so the students will have an idea
of how to discuss with each other and fill out the organizer.
• The teacher will also be the mediator in group conflicts. The
teacher will be responsible for monitoring the groups, making
sure everyone is participating and being included in
discussion.
7. EXPECTING ROLES OF PARENTS
• Stay positive and always encourage the student
• Work on comprehension when reading stories with
student. Focus on who, what, when, where.
• Work with student on identifying singular nouns around
the house, neighborhood, community etc.
• Work with student on identifying plural nouns around
the house, neighborhood, community, etc.
• Make sure all homework is done everyday.

• Students will be able to discuss events of a story as well
as who, what, when, where, why.
• Students will be able to form sentences with correct
use of singular nouns.
• Students will be able to form sentences with correct use
of plural nouns.
• Students will be exposed to group work

and share ideas.
