This session critically evaluates attempts that have been made to support communication and collaboration through ‘mapping’ OER focussing on The Open Learning Network (OLnet) Evidence Hub which used the concept of ‘Contested Collective Intelligence’ and The UNESCO OER Mapping Project which set out some quite specific protocols for metadata.
There will be a demonstration of the new Evidence Hub being developed as part of the OER Research Hub (OERRH) project. This hub is designed to overcome some of the issues that manifested themselves in these earlier projects, a range of different data sources, the importance of data visualization, and account for how different types of evidence might be flexibly accommodated.
There will be an opportunity for delegates to discuss the idea of ‘mapping’ the OER evidence base and what the OER community might want from such services.

The University of Denver is undergoing changes with a newly centralized IT operation and issues around legacy systems. The libraries aim to support research and teaching technologies, manage research objects and metadata, help address technical debt issues on campus, serve as a true repository, and provide expertise on preservation, intellectual property, and community values, thereby positioning themselves as a trusted citizen in the university's IT strategies. The past five years have seen a dramatic growth in interest in the emerging field of Learning Analytics (LA), and particularly in the potential the field holds to address major challenges facing education. However, much of the work in the learning analytics landscape today is closed in nature, small in scale, tool- or software-centric, and relatively disconnected from other LA initiatives. This lack of collaboration, openness, and system integration often leads to fragmentation where learning data cannot be aggregated across different sources, institutions only have the option to implement "closed" systems, and cross disciplinary research opportunities are limited. Beyond the immediate concerns this fragmentation creates for educators and learners, a closed approach dramatically limits our ability to build upon successes, learn from failures and move beyond the "pockets of excellence (and failures)? approach that typifies much of the educational technology landscape.
The potential benefits of openness as a core value within the learning analytics community are numerous. Learning initiatives could be informed by large scale research projects. Open-source software, such as dashboards and analytics engines, could be available free of licensing costs and easily enhanced by others, and OERs could become more personalized to match learners' needs. Open data sets and reproducible papers could rapidly spread understanding of analytical approaches, enabling secondary analysis and comparison across research projects. To realize this future, leaders within the learning analytics, open technologies (software, standards, etc.), open research (open data, open predictive models, etc.) and open learning (OER, MOOCs, etc.) fields have established a "network of practice" aimed at connecting subject matter experts, projects, organizations and companies working in these domains. As an initial organizing event, these leaders organized an Open Learning Analytics (OLA) Summit directly following the 2014 Learning Analytics and Knowledge (LAK) conference this past March as means to further the goal of establishing "openness' as a core value of the larger learning analytics movement. This panel session will bring together several thought leaders from the Open Learning Analytics community who participated in the Summit to facilitate an interactive dialog with attendees on the intersection of learning analytics and open learning, open technologies, open data, and open research. The presenters represent a broad range of experience with institutional analytics projects, an open source development consortium, the sharing of open learner data, and academic research on open learning environments.
Library, what's Library? Creative Library Assessment
A presentation by Olga Koz at the Kansas Library Association, College and University Libraries Section (CULS) Spring 2014 Conference. The rapid pace of change in today's higher education environment creates pressure within an academic library to implement change, new programs, strategy, and technology in order to meet the demands of its stakeholders. Studies have shown that approximately 70% of organizational innovations fail. One of the main causes for these failures is the lack of a thorough diagnostic investigation of stakeholders’ needs, university or college environment. A thorough diagnostic examination includes both an external and internal analysis using some form of assessment. The presenter, a Doctor of Management, OD consultant, and an academic librarian, briefly describes the usual library assessment tools and discuss non-traditional diagnostic methods.

OER Impact: Towards an Evidence Base
In this presentation I critically evaluate attempts that have been made to support communication and collaboration through ‘mapping’ OER. After endorsing the basic rationale for mapping evidence surrounding OER implementation I review two examples of where this has been attempted. The Open Learning Network (OLnet) Evidence Hub used the concept of ‘Contested Collective Intelligence’ to inform a discourse-centric social-semantic web application that could structure the discourses of the OER community. I provide a short critique of this approach which focuses on the data model and the metadata requirements made upon users. I go on to consider the UNESCO OER Mapping Project which set out some quite specific protocols for metadata but never got beyond prototype stage
A rationale for a new, improved evidence hub is provided along with a number of design considerations and a proposal for future development. I conclude with a brief presentation of the new Evidence Hub being developed as part of the OER Research Hub (OERRH) project. I describe the ways in which our evidence model tries to overcome some of the issues which were manifest in these earlier projects, a range of different data sources, the importance of data visualization, and account for how different types of evidence might be flexibly accommodated. Innovations in Saudi university libraries -- An insider's view
This presentation summarizes the author's experiences visiting and observing libraries in nine Saudi universities. It discusses how Saudi university libraries have undergone revolutionary changes with the enormous use of emerging technologies such as integrated library systems, RFID, digital library assistants, self-checkout machines, and discovery tools. It also describes how libraries have shifted from individual to collaborative learning and from traditional to online service models through developing library websites, e-resources portals, mobile access, and institutional repositories. Additionally, the presentation explains how librarians' roles have expanded to include teaching information literacy instruction and liaising with academic departments through programs that go beyond traditional library walls.

As an initial organizing event, these leaders organized an Open Learning Analytics (OLA) Summit directly following the 2014 Learning Analytics and Knowledge (LAK) conference this past March as means to further the goal of establishing "openness' as a core value of the larger learning analytics movement. This panel session will bring together several thought leaders from the Open Learning Analytics community who participated in the Summit to facilitate an interactive dialog with attendees on the intersection of learning analytics and open learning, open technologies, open data, and open research. The presenters represent a broad range of experience with institutional analytics projects, an open source development consortium, the sharing of open learner data, and academic research on open learning environments.
Library, what's Library? Creative Library Assessment
A presentation by Olga Koz at the Kansas Library Association, College and University Libraries Section (CULS) Spring 2014 Conference. The rapid pace of change in today's higher education environment creates pressure within an academic library to implement change, new programs, strategy, and technology in order to meet the demands of its stakeholders. Studies have shown that approximately 70% of organizational innovations fail. One of the main causes for these failures is the lack of a thorough diagnostic investigation of stakeholders’ needs, university or college environment. A thorough diagnostic examination includes both an external and internal analysis using some form of assessment. The presenter, a Doctor of Management, OD consultant, and an academic librarian, briefly describes the usual library assessment tools and discuss non-traditional diagnostic methods.

OER Impact: Towards an Evidence Base
In this presentation I critically evaluate attempts that have been made to support communication and collaboration through ‘mapping’ OER. After endorsing the basic rationale for mapping evidence surrounding OER implementation I review two examples of where this has been attempted. The Open Learning Network (OLnet) Evidence Hub used the concept of ‘Contested Collective Intelligence’ to inform a discourse-centric social-semantic web application that could structure the discourses of the OER community. I provide a short critique of this approach which focuses on the data model and the metadata requirements made upon users. I go on to consider the UNESCO OER Mapping Project which set out some quite specific protocols for metadata but never got beyond prototype stage
A rationale for a new, improved evidence hub is provided along with a number of design considerations and a proposal for future development. I conclude with a brief presentation of the new Evidence Hub being developed as part of the OER Research Hub (OERRH) project. I describe the ways in which our evidence model tries to overcome some of the issues which were manifest in these earlier projects, a range of different data sources, the importance of data visualization, and account for how different types of evidence might be flexibly accommodated. The final part of the session will be given over to group discussion about the idea of ‘mapping’ the OER evidence base and what the OER community might want from such services.
Innovations in Saudi university libraries -- An insider's view
This presentation summarizes the author's experiences visiting and observing libraries in nine Saudi universities. It discusses how Saudi university libraries have undergone revolutionary changes with the enormous use of emerging technologies such as integrated library systems, RFID, digital library assistants, self-checkout machines, and discovery tools. It also describes how libraries have shifted from individual to collaborative learning and from traditional to online service models through developing library websites, e-resources portals, mobile access, and institutional repositories. Additionally, the presentation explains how librarians' roles have expanded to include teaching information literacy instruction and liaising with academic departments through programs that go beyond traditional library walls.

Data science (DS) poses key organizational challenges for academic institutions. DS is a multidisciplinary field that includes a range of research methodologies and fields of inquiry. DS as a domain is interested in many of the same issues as libraries: data access and curation, reproducibility, the value of ontologies, and open scholarship. At the same time, identifying opportunities to collaborate and deploy unified services can be challenging. The Data Science Environment (DSE) program, co-funded by the Gordon and Betty Moore and Alfred P. Sloan foundations, provides resources to help universities develop collaborations between researchers, develop tools in DS, and create new career paths for data scientists. Working groups within the DSE focus on reproducibility, career paths, education/training, research methods, space issues, and software/tools. This program has introduced new opportunities for libraries to explore how to engage with this community and consider how to bring the expertise in the DS community to bear on library missions and goals. In this panel, program members from each of the three partner universities, the University of Washington, New York University and the University of California, Berkeley, consider the research questions of the DSE and the organizational impact of these groups in the University as a whole and for the libraries specifically. The panel will employ a case-study presentation model framed through three lenses: the role of data sciences in information science, the
potential career paths for data scientists in libraries, and the potential
amplification of information services (e.g. data curation, institutional repositories, scholarly publishing).

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
