Mary Erlain – Business Coach, Executive Vice President at Leadership Management Institute- Riverside. President at Peak Marketing & Sales. Leadership Management Institute is the oldest and largest leadership development company in the world. LMI has been working in the areas of Strategic Planning and Organizational Development for nearly 50 years.
Success story: Len Bland – looking for advisory board member for an Operations company – did a general Q&A – found several good candidates I had a former client – Patheo. Wanted to find out if old contact still there The website did not give management team info. Entered Patheo in Linked in and saw two old contacts listed and their titles so I could contact them with confidence. I was not even connected to them so I could not see all their details – but could see name and title. I will link to them in a week or so after we connect live so I don’t look like a stalker.
Used to be able to flood Internet with content and get top Google ranking – not anymore Ex. Keywords: job position, title, company, skills

Basic Questions- Not within a Group
Limit is 50 groups you can join. If you join a lot, make sure they are the right ones. Objective: If you are looking for knowledge in a certain field, look into the members’ profiles to see if they may have expertise to offer
Click on a Group name from “My Groups”
Group Discussions: Browse popular conversations within a group Can follow members: will receive all updates from them on your home page, as if they were a connection. Similar to Twitter.
Don’t post on first day: David Kunze: Figure out what’s going on first. Read past posts. Be relevant, establish credibility from the beginning. Take note of the experts in the group and what they’re saying. Only comment on what you really care about Politics- may dismiss you (Mary Erlain)
Don’t solicit business “ Me First” Approach Be informative, don’t push sales. David Kunze: Sharing knowledge for free. Advice + link. Ex. If someone wants advice on a golf spot he’ll say “I was just there a few days ago, some information on the spot, here’s a link to the website if you would like to hear more about it.” Doesn’t force golf package.
Can create groups through directory screen as well: left hand side box.
Add a logo, name and summary.
Send out Invitations. Invite many people at once. If you send out invitations outside of LinkedIn, pre-approve them on the website.
Begin discussions or asking questions.
Watch for spammers – they have zero connections and just want to spam your group
Click on drop-down menu to choose whether to search for “People”, “Answers”, “Companies”, etc.
From More tab, click on Events Browse Events from your network and RSVP or Search events on the right-hand side.
Searching for different events by keywords, date, area.
Click on Profile-> Recommendations. Click on “Request Recommendations” Tab
Can request to be recommended for current or past positions, including education.
Users with recommendations are three times as likely to get inquiries through LinkedIn searches.
Invitations go to inbox, under Invitations Tab.
Don’t link – send them a note back asking them “I noticed you send a request to link. How can I help you?” (can we phrase this better – it sounds rude) You can choose not to respond – or if you respond you might get grief – Len Bland, Concept Equity Group – capital matchmaker
If you have an interesting article, share it. What you say is online forever.
To get to the Application Directory- click on the “More” tab and click on “Application Directory”
Applications Directory. Slideshare or Google allows you to upload power point presentations for your links to browse, or view presentations by your colleagues.
