1.1: Introduction
Bangladesh is one of the most climate vulnerable countries in the
world and will become even more so as a result of climate
change. Bangladesh is among the countries that are expected to
be worst effected by climate change. Rapid global warming
caused fundamental changes to our climate (MoEF, 2008).
The Dhaka city has a population of over 18 million residents and
continues to grow at an explosive 6.9% yearly rate. It is unclear
whether Dhaka is prepared to face the impacts of climate
change. Adaptation is the process of adjustment in response to
extreme climatic events and long-term changes in weather
patterns, such as heavy storms and erratic temperatures. In
Dhaka’s context, adaptation refers to policies and practices put
in place to protect people and infrastructure from the impacts
(Dhaka Tribune, 2016).
4
1.2: Significance of the Study
This study focuses on the Knowledge about Climate Change on
the People of Dhaka City and not only the possibilities for
adaptation but also it shows from the aspect of sustainable
development in Dhaka City of Bangladesh.
The study first identifies the level of knowledge of climate
change of the people of Dhaka City and what they think about
climate change.
The study desire gives the impression of being how and from
where they get information or idea about climate change.
In addition, this research desire to make out the way to improve
the livelihood according to their judgment and what they
consider for environmental up gradation.
5
1.3: Objectives of the Study
The research work has been designed to explore the following
objectives:
 To know the level of knowledge of climate change of the
people of Dhaka City.
 To know what they think about climate change.
 To know the way to improve the livelihood according to their
judgment.
 To know what they consider for environmental up gradation.
6
2. Literature Review
 Ariel Malk, Jon A. Kroshric, Gary Langer reported in 2007 to The
Association of Knowledge with Concern about Global Warming , 33%
Americans called Global Warming the "biggest environmental problem the
World faces at this time." Up from 16%, a year earlier.
 In another study Americans Knowledge of Climate Change (Leiserowitz,
2010) was found that 63% of Americans believe that global warming is
continuing.
 About 74% of prospective teachers think that holes in the ozone layer
causes the green house effect found in a study in the Prospective Turkish
elementary science teachers knowledge level about the green house effect
by Mustafa, Hasan, Mehmet, Muhammed, Mustafa (2010) .
 SM Hossain, MA Tarafdar, MA Sheikh, S Baroi (2013) reported that from
Badda, Dhaka to assess the level of knowledge on climate change of the
people with a purposive sample size of 226. Nearly half of the respondents
heard about the global warming but 43.24% didn't.
 Previous studies have written about global warming and knowledge about
climate change but they did not mention about the improvement of
livelihood. For this perspective, this paper study on the level of knowledge
of the people of Dhaka city to consider for environmental up gradation
and advancement of living. 7
3. Methodology of the Study
 The Main Research Method:
It was a descriptive type of cross sectional quantitative study carried
out from May to August 2016
 The Research Site :
General information collected from the Uttara area of Dhaka.
 Main Data Collection Method:
A purposive sampling technique was adopted. A total of 50
participants were interviewed. The respondents belonged to the age
between 6 and 60 years. A pre-tested, modified, semi structured, self
administrated questionnaire was designed based on level of
knowledge of the people in this area to collect the information.
Samples were taken from all classes, from highly educated group to
day laborer, housewife to service holder. Data were checked,
cleaned and edited properly before entry and analysis. Descriptive
statistics were used for interpretation of the finding.
8
4. Ethical Consideration of this Study
I tried to follow ethical issues of social research. I conducted the
interview with respondents according to their favorable time, place
and willingness and I didn’t force anybody to participate in the study.
Before participate respondents in this study I gave them a brief
description on the purpose and procedures of the research and getting
permission to take interview.
In the part of building conceptual framework through the using of
literature review and secondary source of data in this research I have
some limitation in terms of ethical consideration. I didn’t able to get
permission from the main author for using his or her book and works
as a reference but we are tried to give proper credit by using citation
of their name through APA style of referencing.
9
5. Limitation of the Study
I am tried to best ensure conduct research accurately. But I am
not far from limitation.
 It was difficult to access to get information sometimes because
of giving respondents own suitable place and time.
 The respondents of sampled were not found outspoken and
failed to adequately reveal the fact lying at times.
 On the other hand, fifty respondents are not enough for
representing the actual scenario of this study.
 It is expected that the result of this research would be more
effective and widely applied if could access and implementing
areas of the Knowledge about Climate Change on the people of
Dhaka City. 10
6. Graphical Presentation of the Study

In the present study majority of the respondents agreed that the mass media is
effective for message dissemination followed by family members and
neibors. TV, Radio and Mobile were the most important source of
information of global warming and climate change. News paper and internet
also other important source for getting information. Health training could be
an effective source of transmission of information about global warming as
it has many impacts on health though it is lacking in the study.

Recommendations
Climate change is the most burning issue in our global
environment in present days. To get rid from the impacts of
climate change several policies, projects and agreements have
been taken globally, regionally and locally. We should keep in
mind about the climatic issue when we intrude any type of
development.
In the past days there were six seasons in our nature. There has
been a visible change in our seasons where six season turns in
to three seasons like summer, rain and winter. For that sack our
cities became more vulnerable in economically and so many
other ways. So it is the time to make people aware about the
impacts of climate changes and different management activities
to minimize the vulnerability of the people and the nations.
20

Nevertheless in the context of “Level of Knowledge about
Climate Change on the People on Dhaka City”, following
recommendations have been proposed:
 • Capacity building, promoting partnerships and
coordinating institutional responses to climate change
 • Different projects initiatives and budget for climate
change activities should be increased
 • Climate change science and technology need to integrate
 •Decentralization the city system
 • Regular cleaning need to regularize
 •Stop deforestation and plant a Tree
 • Switch to green power and develop the tourist spot
21
Climate change is now a global concern in present time.
Developing countries like Bangladesh have become more
vulnerable to it than developed countries and climate
change will exacerbate income inequalities between and
within countries, increase hunger, malnutrition, health
burden and social unrest. Some environmental effects due
to global warming would be irreversible; some of its
societal impacts will be unmanageable in future. Under
such circumstances global leaders should come forward
with unified opinion to reduce and eliminate the
contributing factors for global warming immediately.

Level of knowledge about climate change

  • 1. Presented by Karisma Amjad Lecturer Department of Social Work Asian University of Bangladesh 1
  • 2. Outline of the study The Study is composed of Seven points, references and appendix.  The first points deals with the background of the research, its objectives and significance.  The second point describes the literature review of the study.  The third point mentions the methodology of the research with the brief description of the study area and process of Data collection. 2
  • 3. Continue …  The fourth point explicates ethical issues of social research whatever I tried to fellow.  The fifth point clarifies the limitations to carry out the study.  The sixth point is the nucleus of the report, which represents the graphical analyses and the findings of this study.  The seven point gives some specific recommendations and gives direction about future research. The reference presents the various references used within this thesis and the appendix chapter provides the questionnaire used for primary data in this study. 3
  • 4. 1.1: Introduction Bangladesh is one of the most climate vulnerable countries in the world and will become even more so as a result of climate change. Bangladesh is among the countries that are expected to be worst effected by climate change. Rapid global warming caused fundamental changes to our climate (MoEF, 2008). The Dhaka city has a population of over 18 million residents and continues to grow at an explosive 6.9% yearly rate. It is unclear whether Dhaka is prepared to face the impacts of climate change. Adaptation is the process of adjustment in response to extreme climatic events and long-term changes in weather patterns, such as heavy storms and erratic temperatures. In Dhaka’s context, adaptation refers to policies and practices put in place to protect people and infrastructure from the impacts (Dhaka Tribune, 2016). 4
  • 5. 1.2: Significance of the Study This study focuses on the Knowledge about Climate Change on the People of Dhaka City and not only the possibilities for adaptation but also it shows from the aspect of sustainable development in Dhaka City of Bangladesh. The study first identifies the level of knowledge of climate change of the people of Dhaka City and what they think about climate change. The study desire gives the impression of being how and from where they get information or idea about climate change. In addition, this research desire to make out the way to improve the livelihood according to their judgment and what they consider for environmental up gradation. 5
  • 6. 1.3: Objectives of the Study The research work has been designed to explore the following objectives:  To know the level of knowledge of climate change of the people of Dhaka City.  To know what they think about climate change.  To know the way to improve the livelihood according to their judgment.  To know what they consider for environmental up gradation. 6
  • 7. 2. Literature Review  Ariel Malk, Jon A. Kroshric, Gary Langer reported in 2007 to The Association of Knowledge with Concern about Global Warming , 33% Americans called Global Warming the "biggest environmental problem the World faces at this time." Up from 16%, a year earlier.  In another study Americans Knowledge of Climate Change (Leiserowitz, 2010) was found that 63% of Americans believe that global warming is continuing.  About 74% of prospective teachers think that holes in the ozone layer causes the green house effect found in a study in the Prospective Turkish elementary science teachers knowledge level about the green house effect by Mustafa, Hasan, Mehmet, Muhammed, Mustafa (2010) .  SM Hossain, MA Tarafdar, MA Sheikh, S Baroi (2013) reported that from Badda, Dhaka to assess the level of knowledge on climate change of the people with a purposive sample size of 226. Nearly half of the respondents heard about the global warming but 43.24% didn't.  Previous studies have written about global warming and knowledge about climate change but they did not mention about the improvement of livelihood. For this perspective, this paper study on the level of knowledge of the people of Dhaka city to consider for environmental up gradation and advancement of living. 7
  • 8. 3. Methodology of the Study  The Main Research Method: It was a descriptive type of cross sectional quantitative study carried out from May to August 2016  The Research Site : General information collected from the Uttara area of Dhaka.  Main Data Collection Method: A purposive sampling technique was adopted. A total of 50 participants were interviewed. The respondents belonged to the age between 6 and 60 years. A pre-tested, modified, semi structured, self administrated questionnaire was designed based on level of knowledge of the people in this area to collect the information. Samples were taken from all classes, from highly educated group to day laborer, housewife to service holder. Data were checked, cleaned and edited properly before entry and analysis. Descriptive statistics were used for interpretation of the finding. 8
  • 9. 4. Ethical Consideration of this Study I tried to follow ethical issues of social research. I conducted the interview with respondents according to their favorable time, place and willingness and I didn’t force anybody to participate in the study. Before participate respondents in this study I gave them a brief description on the purpose and procedures of the research and getting permission to take interview. In the part of building conceptual framework through the using of literature review and secondary source of data in this research I have some limitation in terms of ethical consideration. I didn’t able to get permission from the main author for using his or her book and works as a reference but we are tried to give proper credit by using citation of their name through APA style of referencing. 9
  • 10. 5. Limitation of the Study I am tried to best ensure conduct research accurately. But I am not far from limitation.  It was difficult to access to get information sometimes because of giving respondents own suitable place and time.  The respondents of sampled were not found outspoken and failed to adequately reveal the fact lying at times.  On the other hand, fifty respondents are not enough for representing the actual scenario of this study.  It is expected that the result of this research would be more effective and widely applied if could access and implementing areas of the Knowledge about Climate Change on the people of Dhaka City. 10

Graphical Presentation of the Study 6.1: Personal, demographic and daily work duration information of the respondents: Source: field survey, 2016 During the study it has been seen that the male respondents were more than the number of female. On the study we can see that the male were 84% while the female were 16%. 11
  • 12. Continue … Source: field survey, 2016 The chart shows that the illiterate respondent’s percentage was 8, while literate who can sign their name only was 12%, up to class one among the respondents were 16%, from class six to class ten and class XI to class XII 20% and above this that means there found 24% respondents completed higher educations. 0% 5% 10% 15% 20% 25% 30% Illiterate literate ( can sign only) class 1-V Class VI-X Class XI -XII Higher Level of education of the people 12

  • 19. Findings of the Study  First of all, the study represents 92% respondents have heard about climate change from TV, Radio, Mobile ,News paper and internet.  The study found that respondents think that due to climate change sea level will raise, increasing worming, frequent natural disaster and decreasing rain fall is an impact of climate change.  Another outcome of this study to improve livelihood is highest support need to get from credit facility by the government, then upgrading of transportation.  Last of all, the study result stand for environmental up gradation is to do tree plantation ,need to clean regular and spread the awareness. 19
  • 20. Recommendations Climate change is the most burning issue in our global environment in present days. To get rid from the impacts of climate change several policies, projects and agreements have been taken globally, regionally and locally. We should keep in mind about the climatic issue when we intrude any type of development. In the past days there were six seasons in our nature. There has been a visible change in our seasons where six season turns in to three seasons like summer, rain and winter. For that sack our cities became more vulnerable in economically and so many other ways. So it is the time to make people aware about the impacts of climate changes and different management activities to minimize the vulnerability of the people and the nations. 20
  • 21. Continue… Nevertheless in the context of “Level of Knowledge about Climate Change on the People on Dhaka City”, following recommendations have been proposed:  • Capacity building, promoting partnerships and coordinating institutional responses to climate change  • Different projects initiatives and budget for climate change activities should be increased  • Climate change science and technology need to integrate  •Decentralization the city system  • Regular cleaning need to regularize  •Stop deforestation and plant a Tree  • Switch to green power and develop the tourist spot 21
  • 22. Climate change is now a global concern in present time. Developing countries like Bangladesh have become more vulnerable to it than developed countries and climate change will exacerbate income inequalities between and within countries, increase hunger, malnutrition, health burden and social unrest. Some environmental effects due to global warming would be irreversible; some of its societal impacts will be unmanageable in future. Under such circumstances global leaders should come forward with unified opinion to reduce and eliminate the contributing factors for global warming immediately. 22
