This document describes the radiation method for measuring liquid levels. It explains that radioactive isotopes emit alpha, beta, or gamma radiation. Gamma radiation is best for level detection because it has the highest penetrating power. A gamma source is placed at the bottom of a tank, and a detector like a Geiger-Muller tube is placed at the top. As the liquid level rises, more gamma rays are absorbed, so the detector receives fewer rays and its output decreases. Thus the detector output inversely corresponds to the liquid level in the tank.
