IMAGINARY LINESBack outline
GAME: locate places according to their
latitude and longitude.
Meridians
Parallels
Let's find places: World map.
Back
outline
The Equator is at 0º. It divides the Earth into the
Northern and the Southern Hemispheres.
Parallels are used to measure latitude (the distance to the Equator).
Tropic of Cancer is at 23º 27' N.
Arctic Circle is at 66º 33' N.
Tropic of Capricorn is at 23º 27' S.
Antarctic Circle is at 66º 33' S.

Back outline
The Greenwich Meridian is at 0º and divides the Earth into the Eastern and Western
Hemispheres.
Meridians are used to measure longitude (the distance to the
Greenwich Meridian).

GEOGRAPHIC COORDINATES
The geographic coordinates of a point are its latitude and longitude.
Back outline
For example, the coordinates of point A are 40º N, 60º E.
Because A is found on parallel 40, to the North of the Equator and on meridian 60, to the
East of Greenwich Meridian.
ZOOM
Tell me the coordinates: World map.
GAME (step 3): elements on a map
TIME ZONES ON EARTH
The Earth's surface has been divided into 24 time zones.
Back
outline
The reference is the zone which corresponds to the Greenwich Meridian.
To the West, each zone is one hour earlier.
To the East, each zone is one hour later.
