All of that change has ushered in what my boss, Tom Hood, calls the New Normal – where the only constant is change. And that change is increasingly fast and complex and life-altering.
And that leaves CPAs feeling like this. It’s getting harder to keep up, to do our jobs AND stay on top of all the changes that are sweeping through our profession.
The knowledge we need to do our jobs is out there. The problem is, there’s almost too much information. You hear a lot of folks talk about information overload these days. But Chris Anderson would say the problem isn’t information overload, it’s filter failure. We need better filters that will give us the information we need and allow us to learn what we need to know to stay ahead of the curve. My boss, Tom Hood, would put it this way: Knowledge today is inventory, but it’s a FLOW of knowledge, not an stock pile. It’s ever changing. So the question is: As knowledge moves form stocks to flows, how do we stop our inventory from becoming obsolete?
The answer is to be ever learning. And almost all learning is social. It’s informal. And that’s where social media comes into play. It has ushered in a new era that Tony Bingham and Marcia Conner call “The New Social Learning.”Tony and Marcia will tell you that nearly all learning is social in nature. In other words, most of what we learn on a day-to-day basis is stuff that we learn from our interactions with other people. THAT is where most learning takes place, and THAT is what makes social media such a compelling tool in a business sense.
It’s a different world, folks.Social media is helping us do all of that.
More to the point, though, it’s about learning – the new social learning that Tony Bingham and Marcia Conner talk about. And today, that may be the most important thing we can do.“To keep pace in your industry, let alone as a leader, requires your rate of LEARNING to be greater than, or equal to, the rate of change.
