III. Lesson Proper
A. Listening Activity
This time, we will view a short story entitled “Pliant like a
Bamboo” by I.V. Mallari. The story tells about the mango
tree and the bamboo tree both argued as to whom is the
strongest. Who do you think is the strongest, the mango
tree or the bamboo tree?
Comprehension Questions:
1. Who came to Philippines and dominated for more
than three hundred years?
2. Who came after the Spaniards?
3. How will you describe the Japanese?
4. If you will become one of the trees in the story, who
will you choose to be, why?
5. As a Filipino, will you consider yourself like a
bamboo, why? Why not?
6. What specific characteristic are you proud of that
has been influenced by your past experiences?
B. Analysis
The teacher will distribute a copy of the story to the students.
The students will point out the verbs that they can see in the
story. The teacher will ask the students to identify the tense of
the verb and write it on the board.
What is the form of the verb?
What have you notice to the verb when the action is done in
the past?
Very Good. That’s right!
*During the class discussion, the teacher will slightly
raise her hand to encourage my students to stand up and
answer the questions.
VERBS come in three tenses, Past, Present and Future.
*The teacher reviewed to the students the part of speech.
Simple Past Tense is used to describe things that have
already happened. It is used to talk about things that
happened or existed before now.
These can be in terms of:
 events in the past that are now finished
 situation in the past
 a series of actions in the past
• Verbs used are either regular or irregular verbs. To form
the regular verb, add either d, or ed to the verb.
I think, the Mango tree is the strongest because I it has a big
trunk and deep roots.
For me, Bamboo tree is the strongest because it just swayed as
the strong wind blows.
The Spaniards.
Americans
Rude, Relentless, Cruel
I would choose to be a Bamboo because like bamboo I want to be
strong.
Yes, I consider myself like a Bamboo because we are strong no
matter what problem we encounter.
Example: One of the characteristics I am proud of is being Brave.
I became a brave person when my Mom left us to go abroad to
work in order support our family. As an eldest sister, I want to
show to my younger brothers that we need to be brave.
Present Form Past Form
It is in present tense/ past tense.
The verb changes. When the action done in the past, there’s -d or
–ed in the verb.
Take a look at the following examples:
1. They called upon the wind to make the decision.
2. The Spaniards dominated the Philippines for more than three
hundred years.
3. The Filipinos learned to bow his head low, to “cooperate” with
the Japanese.
4. The wind blew the hardest.
5. The mango tree fast. Stood
6. The American took place of the Spaniards.
The Filipinos survived difficulties in the past.
I lived in Cebu for 10 years. (I don’t live their anymore).
The Filipinos fought for their freedom, built their country, and
stood on their own.
Regular verbs + d Regular verbs + ed

• Be verbs, is and are, when used in the past
tense become was and were. Was is used
when the subject is singular. On the other
hand, were is used when the subject is two or
more.
Examples:
Present tense Past tense
