What is It?
Did you get all the words with -ing form?
These words show an action or being, they are called VERBS. When the verb is in
the -ing form we call it as the present participle form. Example: passing, hearing.
When we put a “be” verb (am, is, was, are, were) before a main verb that is in the
present participle, we form the progressive aspect of verb. The progressive aspect
of verb has also three tenses (present, past, and future).
Example: I was passing by you room yesterday. (Past tense)
Your teacher is teaching very well. (Present tense)
I will be asking your teacher after classes. (Future tense)
Let us learn further. Read and understand the following lessons.
The Three Progressive Aspect of Verbs
1. The Present Progressive Aspect
The present progressive aspect is formed with the present form of the helping
“be” verb (am, is, are), plus the base form of the verb in the present tense with an -
ing ending (present participle). For verbs that end in -e, drop the -e before adding the
ing. In composing sentences using the present progressive aspect, the pattern is as
shown: (Subject) + (am/is/are + base form of the verb + ing)
Examples: I am learning the progressive aspect of verbs today.
4. 5
Ana is listening carefully to the explanation of our teacher.
We are expecting a quiz after the discussion.
Notice that the subjects in the sentences I, Ana and We are followed by the
‘be’ verbs am, is and are. The verbs learn, listen and expect were added with –ing.
This is how sentences in the present progressive aspect of verbs are formed.
subject + am/is/are + base form of verb + ing
am - is used when the subject is the pronoun, I.
Example: I am helping my groupmates in the group activity.
(subject + am + help + ing)
is - is used when the subject is a singular noun or pronoun.
Examples: Francis is taking down suggestions.
He is asking questions if it is not clear.
(subject + is + ask + -ing)
are - is used when the subject is plural noun or pronoun and the special pronoun,
you.
Examples: The members are looking for the meaning of the difficult words.
You are going to report our group output.
The Present Progressive Aspect is used to express:
1. an activity in progress.
Example: I am listening attentively now.
2. a temporary situation
Example: I am sitting with my best friend.
3. an event planned and to take place in the future.
Example: We are expecting a long quiz tomorrow.
4. emotional comment on present habit.
Example: Jacob is always attending the afternoon practice.
5. Repeated action in a series of similar ongoing actions. Example: Liza
is roaming around the room.
2. The Past Progressive Aspect
Use the past progressive aspect to show or tell an action that was happening
or was going on, at some point in the past.
The past progressive aspect is formed with the past tense of the helping “be”
verb (was, were), plus the base form of the verb with an – ing ending (present
participle). For verbs that end in -e, drop the -e before adding the – ing. Study the
pattern below:
5. 6
(subject) + (was/were + base form + ing )
Examples: I was writing my notes for the whole hour.
We were reading when the principal arrived.
In the sentences above, the subjects I and We were followed by the past tense
of the helping “be” verb was and were. Then the base form of the verbs write and
read added with the –ing ending.
subject + was/were + base form of the verb + ing
was- is used when the subject is a singular noun or pronoun
Example: I was standing when my teacher called me.
Myra was cheering for me for the entire period.
(subject + was + cheer + ing)
were- is used when the subject is plural noun or pronoun and the special pronoun,
you.
Example: My classmates were praising me after the lesson yesterday.
You were telling a story when Abe stopped you.
(subject + were + tell + ing)
The past progressive aspect is used to express:
1. an action in progress at a specific point of time in the past.
Example: The children were jogging at 8:00 o’clock in the morning.
2. past action done at the same time with some other event.
Example: Erin was eating when her classmate came.
3. repetition of some ongoing action.
Example: John was playing Mobile Legends all day long.
3. The Future Progressive Aspect
Use the future progressive aspect of verb to tell or show action that will be
taking place at some time in the future. The future progressive aspect is formed by
adding will be or shall be to the base form of the verb with an – ing ending (present
participle). For the verbs that end in -e, drop the -e before adding the -ing.
subject + will be/shall be + base form of the verb + ing
will be and shall be can be used with singular and plural subjects in sentences
Examples: The volunteers will be distributing forms during the meeting next
week.
6. 7
The barangay captain shall be monitoring the distribution of the forms.
(subject + shall + be + monitor + -ing)
The future progressive aspect is used to express:
1. action that will be in progress at a specific time in the future.
Example: The parents will be attending the meeting tomorrow.
(subject + will + be + attend + -ing)
2. duration of some specific action.
Example: My brother will be studying in Baguio City for the next three years.
