DHCP is a protocol that automatically assigns IP addresses and other network configuration settings to clients. It allows administrators to change network settings centrally on the DHCP server rather than having to configure each client individually. The DHCP server stores lease information in /var/lib/dhcp/dhcpd.leases and is configured using /etc/dhcpd.conf which defines IP pools, default routes, DNS servers and other options. The DHCP relay agent forwards requests from clients without a local DHCP server to servers on other subnets.

The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical decentralized naming system for computers, services, or any resource connected to the Internet or a private network. It associates various information with domain names assigned to each of the participating entities. Most prominently, it translates more readily memorized domain names to the numerical IP addresses needed for the purpose of locating and identifying computer services and devices with the underlying network protocols. By providing a worldwide, distributed directory service, the Domain Name System is an essential component of the functionality of the Internet.
DHCP stands for dynamic host configuration protocol. What it does is dynamically assign network settings from a server. In other words, instead of having to configure the parameters related to how your computer communicates with a network, it happens automatically.
Assigning an IP address dynamically is the most basic piece but there is a lot more to DHCP. This includes the netmask, host name, domain name, gateway and name servers. In addition, DHCP can supply other information such as a time server.
Many people are anti-DHCP, because they see it as a way that an ISP offers you an IP address that changes. This, of course, makes it difficult to advertise a server. On the other hand, DHCP can save you a lot of ongoing configuration work within your company or organization.
