It is a document prepared and published by the
Institution of Surveyors Malaysia in May 2000
It is a document that contain definition of principles aimed
at providing uniform method of measurement,
quantification and billing of building works for use by
quantity surveyors.
What is SMM ?
4
It is not an inflexible document. Quantity surveyors are expected
to use their discretion and provide more information where
necessary.
The Malaysian Standard Method of Measurement of Building Works
(Second Edition) is simply a document that describe or explain the
following:
1.1. How toHow to itemiseitemise the various works, the various works, labourlabour or materials that needor materials that need

The Malaysian Standard Method of Measurement of
Building Works (Second Edition) is divided into 20
sections with each of them representing a WORK

As we will see later, there may be hundreds or
thousands of items found in a building project. These
items are classified or grouped according to the

WORK SECTIONS.
Each Work Section is in fact a heading for the
different classes or groups of building work items.
Such an arrangement provides a uniform framework
or guidelines for the measurement, quantification
and billing of the building works.

This Standard Method of
Measurement 2 provides a
UNIFORM BASIS for measuring
building works and embodies
the essentials of good practice.
Clause A1 - INTRODUCTION
The following are some of the
works that need to be carried out
in the construction of a building
and how they should be measured
as required by the SMM

• All concrete columns,
stiffeners and beams
shall be measured in m3
• All brickwork shall
be measured in m2
• All steel reinforcement
shall be measured in kg

56
Let’s say that you have to measure the Sub-structure (the Work Below
Lowest floor Finish) of a 6 storey office block with a plan area of
100.0m x 20.0m.
The measurement include doing the “taking-off” of the column bases
made of reinforced concrete Grade 25. There are all together 8 types
of column bases that you need to “take-off”. They are as follows:
F1 – 4 nos 1.30m x 1.00m x 0.35m
F2a – 4 nos 1.50m x 1.50m x 0.40m
57
F2a – 4 nos 1.50m x 1.50m x 0.40m
F3 - 6 nos 1.80m x 1.20m x 0.45m
F4 - 6 nos 2.00m x 1.80m x 0.60m
F5 - 4 nos 2.40m x 1.20m x 0.45m
F7 - 3 nos 2.00m x 1.60m x 0.45m
F8 - 2 nos 2.40m x 1.10m x 0.40m
F9 - 2 nos 2.00m x 2.00m x 0.35m
Now please pay attention to how the taking-off is done. It involves the
writing down of many groups of dimensions on 4 pages of dimension
paper

    Let’s say thatyou have to measure the Sub-structure (the Work Below Lowest floor Finish) of a 6 storey office block with a plan area of 100.0m x 20.0m. The measurement include doing the “taking-off” of the column bases made of reinforced concrete Grade 25. There are all together 8 types of column bases that you need to “take-off”. They are as follows: F1 – 4 nos 1.30m x 1.00m x 0.35m F2a – 4 nos 1.50m x 1.50m x 0.40m 57 F2a – 4 nos 1.50m x 1.50m x 0.40m F3 - 6 nos 1.80m x 1.20m x 0.45m F4 - 6 nos 2.00m x 1.80m x 0.60m F5 - 4 nos 2.40m x 1.20m x 0.45m F7 - 3 nos 2.00m x 1.60m x 0.45m F8 - 2 nos 2.40m x 1.10m x 0.40m F9 - 2 nos 2.00m x 2.00m x 0.35m Now please pay attention to how the taking-off is done. It involves the writing down of many groups of dimensions on 4 pages of dimension paper
