1. The model teacher, Mr. Renato Valdez, views teaching as a vocation driven by his desire to sincerely serve his students and help them progress, not just for his degree or salary.
2. Two educational philosophies are discussed: Essentialism focuses on mastery of core subjects through textbooks and drills, while the teacher is the sole authority. Progressivism promotes democratic living through interdisciplinary, relevant curriculum and experiential learning centered around students' interests.
3. The author's own educational philosophy would aim to promote meaningful, discovery learning through connecting experiences, hands-on activities, integration of technology, and interdisciplinary subjects - while also developing students' values.

1. Interview your model teacher on how he/she lives teaching as a vocation, mission,
and profession.
One of my favorite instructor/teacher in my college days is Mr. Renato Valdez. He
is my teacher in two of my minor subject in college. As I ask him how he lives teaching
as a vocation, he said that his innermost desire is to sincerely serve his learners under
his fondest care to the fullest contentment and dedication. He is not just teaching for the
sake of his degree that he earned in college or for the salary he will get but for the sake
of seeing his learners progressing most specially in their lives. And as a mission, he told
me that he have to go to school to make his learners be functionally literate, equipped
with life skills and imbued with desirable values of a person as making this part in his
teaching. And lastly as a profession, he told me that he should dedicate his work
consistently and conscientiously for the success of his teaching that he will be forever in
the heart of the community, co mentors, and most especially in his students to serve
and be a good citizen in our nation.
2. 2. Name and identify the aim, curriculum, methodology, and teacher/learner
relationship. Name at least two educational philosophies.
The two of the educational philosophies are the Essentialism and Progressivism.
Essentialism aims to promote the intellectual growth of the individual and
educate a competent person. Teacher is the sole authority in his or her subject area or
field of specification as the role of education. Essential skills of the 3R’s and the
essential subjects of English, Science, History, Math and Foreign Language is the focus
in the curriculum of Essentialism. Excellence in education, back to basics and cultural
literacy is the curriculum trends. Method in teaching emphasizes mastery of subject
matter. Teachers are the fountain of fountain of information. They rely heavily on the use
of prescribed textbooks, the drill method and other method that will enable them to
cover as much academic content as possible like the lecture method. Teacher and
3. student relationship is not much emphasized because students are limited to express
themselves. Whatever the teacher imparts is the correct.
Progressivism aims to promote democratic and social living. Knowledge leads to
growth and development of lifelong learners who actively learn by doing is the role of
education. Subjects are interdisciplinary, integrative and interactive. Curriculum is the
focused on students’ interest, human problems and affairs. School reforms, relevant and
contextualized curriculum, humanistic education is the curriculum trends in this
philosophy. Teachers are more concerned with the learner’s skills to cope with change.
Instead of occupying themselves with teaching facts or bits of information that are true
today but become obsolete tomorrow. They would rather focus their teaching of skills or
processes in gathering and evaluating information and in problem solving. Teachers
expose learners to many new scientific, technological, and social developments,
reflecting the progressivist notion that progress and change are fundamental.
Methodology used is the experiential method which lets the students learned by their
own. Teacher and students relationship is much build because they are to express their
selves in progression.
3. Formulate your own educational philosophy.
If given the chance to come up with my own educational philosophy it would aim
to promote meaningful and discovery learning to the learner. This let the learner connect
his previews experiences to new experiences. I will encourage my students to recognize
relevant personal experiences. And it is discovery learning because I will give my
students the chance to learn by their own. And integrate technology as one of the thing
to be learned by my students. Through hands on activities I can have socialization one
on one to my students. Through that I will build good relationship with them. My subjects
will be integrative, interactive and interdisciplinary. This meaningful and discovery
learning will let my students do their progression and I will be there for them to facilitate.
And also I will never forget the values to be part of my educational philosophy because I
will let them also to be a wholesome individual as go through their lives.
