Language-based learning disabilities (LBLD) are heterogeneous disorders that affect academic skills like reading, writing, and math in young children. They are caused by brain damage or structural issues and are often hereditary. Specific learning difficulties include dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyspraxia, and dyscalculia. Children with LBLD have trouble expressing ideas, learning vocabulary, following directions, recalling numbers, spelling, and more. Diagnosis involves evaluating language skills by a team including parents, teachers, and medical professionals. Treatment includes special education classes focusing on language skills, developing individual education plans, and ongoing assessments.

2. Language Based Learning Disabilities (LBLD)
• LBLD are heterogeneous disorders associated with

listening, reasoning, speaking, reading, writing and
mathematic calculations.
• Associated with movement, coordination and direct
attention
• Usually not identified until the child reaches school age
• Hard to communicate and Express ideas
• Caused by brain damage or structural development of
brain usually at birth
• Often hereditary
• Associated to specific language problems

• Dyscalculia

5. Diagnosis
• Speech Language Pathologist (SLP)
▫ Team consisting of parents, care givers, teachers,
social workers, psychologists and neurologists.
▫ Work together to find the proper diagnosis
▫ Evaluate speaking, listening, reading and written
language
▫ Evaluate the comprehension skills
▫ Social workers obtain literacy history from the home
and observe child during classroom activities and
social interactions
▫ Psychologists review phonological memory
▫ Neurologists look for motor skills and brain functions

6. Treatment
• Special education classes

skills
▫ Repetition of oral, reading and writing activities

• Seize the opportunity to make an enormous difference in students’ life
• Identify where students has trouble
• Talk to specialists in your school
• Break tasks into smaller steps and give directions verbally and in written
form
• Give the students more time to finish school work
• Let the students with reading problems use textbooks on tape
• Let the student with listening difficulties borrow notes from classmates
• Let the students with writing difficulties use a computer with specialized
software
• Teach organizational skills, study skills and learning strategies
• Work with students’ parents to create an educational plan
• Establish a positive working relationship with parents
