Learning about Sex
The Gift of Human Sexuality
What is Human Sexuality?
What is Sexuality?
Sexuality is everything
in person- physical,
psycho-emotional,
relational
characteristics- that
makes us male or
female.
God and Sexuality
Our sexuality is part of
who we are and is
therefore a gift from
God,
drawing us into deeper,
fuller, and more
authentic loving
relationships with
others.
We are all sexual beings.
• We relate to the world only either as a male or
female.
Fundamental Human Dignity
• We should give equal respect to both men and
women.
• Discrimination against either one is a violation of
our fundamental sexuality and dignity.
SEX and SEXUALITY
While the word “sex”
and “sexuality” often
connote the “sexual
act”, “sex” and
“sexuality” are much
broader in meaning.
Church and Parents
Our Church teaches
that parents have
the primary right and
duty to educate their
children in matters of
sexuality and the
virtue of chastity.
End of Part I
The Virtue of Chastity
Old and New Testament
Significance
OT basis:
Exodus 20:14 and Exodus 20:17
• The sixth commandment draws out the interrelationship
of the values of family, life and chastity
• The ninth commandment completes the sixth
commandment by going to the interior source of the
disorder of the flesh.
NT basis:
Lk 7:36-50, Jn 4:4-42
The sixth beatitude
perfects the sixth and
nine commandments
by placing chastity at
the service of the
human family.
CHASTITY
• Understanding of
chastity will allow you
to master your sexual
urges.
• To grow out of
yourselves to become
better, more
integrated, more
loving persons.
End of Part II
Obstacles to Growing in
Chastity
Masturbation
It is an act of arousing
oneself by touching
one’s sexual organs
or other similar
means. It reinforces
the wrong notion of
that sex is merely for
one’s personal
pleasure.
Pre-marital sex
It is entering into sexual
union outside
marriage or even
long-term exclusive
relationship outside
marriage.
Pornography
It refers to any material
that violates the
private and intimate
nature of the human
sexual act by
exposing to other
persons.
Prostitution
It is engaging in the
sexual act for money.
Homosexual acts and orientation
It refers to the sexual attraction of a person toward
members of the same sex.
HOW DO WE FIGHT THIS?
• God created every
person precisely as
male and female in
his own image and
likeness.
What about Jesus?
• Following Jesus
entails respecting
one’s body and using
God’s gift of human
sexuality in building
loving relationships
with others.
