Layer poultry farming involves raising egg-laying chickens commercially for egg production. It is gaining popularity in India due to lower costs and growing egg demand. The key states for layer farming are Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Maharashtra, and Punjab. Layer farming provides benefits such as rapid returns, continuous income source, and use of agricultural byproducts as feed. Proper farm management is required to maximize egg production over the layers' lifespan from 18-78 weeks of age. India is the third largest egg producer globally but still has opportunities for growth as per capita consumption is still lower than developed countries.
Layer Poultry Farming Business Plan. Growing Industry for Starting a Business of Raising Chickens for Egg Production.
Layer poultry farming means for commercial egg production to raise egg-laying poultry birds. Layer chickens are such a special hen’s species that must be raised when they are one day old. They begin commercially laying eggs between the ages of 18-19 weeks. They continue to lay eggs till their age of 72-78 weeks. During their egg-laying time, they will produce about one kg of eggs by consuming about 2.25 kg of food. Note the different characteristics of cock and hen before breeding for the purpose of producing a hybrid egg sheet. There are different types of highly productive layer breeds of eggs available worldwide.

This document provides information on poultry farming and management. It discusses the main species of birds reared for economic benefits, including chickens, ducks, geese, quails and pigeons. It outlines the benefits of poultry farming such as low capital requirements and high returns. It also describes important considerations for poultry housing, drinking/feeding systems, chick quality, and brooding management. Finally, it discusses common poultry diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites, as well as deficiency diseases, and provides treatment recommendations.
- Worldwide consumption of poultry is increasing, with India emerging as the 2nd largest market growing at over 14% annually. However, per capita consumption in India remains well below recommended levels.
- The poultry industry in Jharkhand is growing at 20% annually but local production meets only a fraction of daily demand. A market study identified potential for expansion.
- A proposed commercial poultry farm in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand was estimated to generate a net profit within 6 years, through rearing broiler chickens in batches of 500 birds each week for meat production. Infrastructure, equipment, feed and operating costs were calculated.
- While demand exceeds supply locally, opportunities exist
The document provides information on the current status of the poultry industry globally and in India. Some key points:
- Globally, poultry meat production is projected to grow 2.3% annually until 2023 to 134.5 million tonnes, making it the largest meat sector.
- In India, the poultry industry contributes Rs. 11 lakh crore annually and is the 3rd largest egg producer and 5th largest broiler meat producer worldwide.
- Telangana is a major poultry producer in India, with an annual broiler production of 20 crore and egg production of 3.2 crore. The industry provides employment and economic opportunities.
This document summarizes various feed ingredients used in poultry feeds. It discusses common energy sources like maize, sorghum, and wheat. It also discusses protein sources such as soybean meal, groundnut cake, and sunflower cake. The document provides information on the nutritional composition of each ingredient. It also discusses additives used in poultry feeds like antibiotics, anticoccidials, enzymes, and probiotics. Finally, it notes standards and guidelines for broiler, layer, and breeder feeds from organizations like BIS and NRC.
This document provides information on grower and layer management. It discusses the growing period from brooding to sexual maturity (9-18 weeks) and the laying period from sexual maturity to the end of the laying cycle (18-72 weeks). Key points covered include proper housing, feeding, lighting, and vaccination recommendations for growers and layers. Optimal production is achieved through uniform growth, restricted feeding of growers, and providing the proper diet, housing, and lighting for layers to maximize egg production over their lifespan.
All of the above poultry-keeping methods are used in the developing world, but the majority of the enterprises are backyard poultry and farm flock production. The poultry and egg sectors are highly fragmented. Most of the production is carried out by a large number of farmers, each with a very small flock. The greater part of produce is sold in markets close to the farms.
Day-old chicks are usually obtained from local hatcheries licensed by international hybrid breeding companies. Farmers or cooperatives of farmers may choose between varieties of chickens for egg production and meat production.
The small chicks can be either naturally or artificially brooded. If artificially brooded, small chicks must be placed in a separate house from laying chickens and it is necessary to protect the chicks from predators, diseases and catching colds.
This stage of brooding lasts for eight weeks. In the first four weeks of life, small chicks need to be housed in a brooding box. Some typical types of brooders are shown below and on the previous page.
Typically, a layer’s production cycle lasts just over a year (52-56 weeks). During the production cycle many factors influence egg production; therefore, the cycle must be managed effectively and efficiently in order to provide maximum output and profitability.

Dairy Farming to Produce Milk and Cattle Breeding Detailed Project Report, Pr...Ajjay Kumar Gupta
Breeding to meet the demand for beef production, owners also use selective breeding to attain specific traits in their beef cattle. An example of a desired trait could be leaner meat or resistance to illness. Breeds known as dual-purpose breeds are also used for beef production. These breeds have been selected for two purposes at once, such as for both beef and dairy production.
Dairy farming is a large unorganized sector in India and a major source for livelihood in rural areas. Dairy farming is a class of agriculture for long-term production of milk, which is processed (either on the farm or at a dairy plant, either of which may be called a dairy) for eventual sale of a dairy product. Commercial and small scale dairy farming in India is no doubt playing an important role in the total milk production and economy of our country. And almost all regions of India are suitable for setting up dairy farming business.

How to Start a Dairy Farm Business in India. Production Process of Dairy Prod...Ajjay Kumar Gupta
Dairy farming is a type of agriculture that is focused on producing milk. This is different from raising animals to produce meat. Milk can be used to produce dairy products, including cheese. Species commonly used are cows (so-called dairy cows), but goats, sheep and camels are also used. Sometimes donkeys are used to produce an alternative to cows' milk for babies. Some babies can digest donkeys' milk better than cows' milk.
Producing milk has been part of farming for a long time. In the last century, farms have become more specialised. In the 20th century, some farmers started with farms that only produce milk.

Introduction
Layer poultry farming means raising egg laying poultry birds for the
purpose of commercial egg production. Layer chickens are such a
special species of hens, which need to be raised from when they are
one day old. They start laying eggs commercially from 18-19 weeks of
age. They remain laying eggs continuously till their 72-78 weeks of
age. They can produce about one kg of eggs by consuming about 2.25
kg of food during their egg laying period.
3. www.entrepreneurindia.co
Poultry layer farming is gaining popularity in India due to its lower
production cost and growing demand of eggs. India ranks third in the
world by producing 3.8 billion kilograms in shell. Andhra Pradesh,
Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Maharashtra and Punjab are the leading egg
producing states in India in the same order. There is a rise in egg
production in India owing to the growth in human consumption and
lower production costs. Poultry layer farming is given a lot of
importance in the national policy owing to which there is a lot of scope
of improvement and development.
4. www.entrepreneurindia.co
Benefits of Layer Farming
• It requires less investment compared to rearing other livestock.
While chicken will start laying eggs in 8 to 10 weeks, broilers can be
sold after 6 weeks by which time they would have grown to 1.25 kg
weight.
• It gives rapid return on investment. Chicken start laying eggs
in 8 to 10 weeks and broilers can be sold for meat between 6 and 10
weeks. The interval between generations is very small and hence,
production can be phenomenally increased within a short period.
• Broilers intake of feed is comparatively very low while it
produces maximum possible amount of food for us. Poultry is capable
of utilizing as its feed large quantities of byproducts like bran,
substandard grains, vegetables etc. which normally go as waste, thus
saving for the farmer a portion of his expenses towards poultry feed.
5. www.entrepreneurindia.co
• Poultry farming is a continuous source of income. It is not
seasonal and can produce income for the entire year. While chickens
lay eggs between 6 to 8 months, broilers take only 6 to 10 weeks to
bring in income. Meat, eggs, feathers and manure of chicken and
broilers are all saleable and income generating. Poultry farming in a
small scale requires only minimum space and they can be reared even
in the backyards of homes.
• Poultry farming requires very little water for both drinking and
cleaning. One litre of water is sufficient for 5 birds for a day.
• Poultry droppings are rich in nitrogen and organic material and
hence, are considered valuable as fertilizers.
6. www.entrepreneurindia.co
• Poultry feathers are also used for making pillows, fancy articles
and curios.
• Poultry offers good full time or part-time employment
opportunity to farmers.
• Poultry products like egg and meat have high nutritional value.
Among all edible meat, broiler meat has the least fat content. It can
also be cooked in its own fat and does not require any from outside.
Poultry meat contains more protein and essential amino acids than
other meats and are low in its cholesterol content c in comparison.
7. www.entrepreneurindia.co
Egg Production for Layer Poultry Farming:
Egg production from a Layer Poultry Farming depends on the care and
farm management.
Within the first 20 weeks of age, about 5% of hens start laying eggs.
About 10% birds start laying at their 21 weeks of age.
When they reach 26 to 30 weeks of age, they produce highly.
Although, it may be different depending on their strain.
• After laying a maximum number of eggs, they usually stop
laying for a few days.
• And after this period, their egg production might reduce slowly.
8. www.entrepreneurindia.co
• Egg laying rate and size of eggs increases gradually.
• The hens grow till their 40 weeks of age.
• Weight and size of eggs increases till their 50 weeks of age.
India is the third-largest egg producer in the world after China and the
USA and the fourth-largest chicken producer in the world after China,
Brazil and the USA. In India, the per capita consumption of eggs has
gone up from 30 eggs per annum to 68 eggs per annum, and that of
chicken from 400 gms per annum, to 2.5 kg per annum in the last 5
years. Human nutritionists recommend a minimum of 180 eggs & 10
kg chicken per annum for a healthy adult human, which means that
the Indian poultry market is laden with opportunities. Adult population
in most developed countries consume over 240 eggs and 20 kg of
chicken per annum.
9. www.entrepreneurindia.co
Poultry is the most organised sector in animal agriculture in India,
worth Euro 14,500 million. Production of broiler meat has increased to
4.2 million tons per annum in 2015-16. Demand for processed chicken
meat has been growing by 15- 20% per annum. Total layer production
in India has gone up to reach 80 million eggs per annum. Industry
sources estimate CY 2016-17 feed consumption to go from 17 to 18
million tons, which includes corn and soya bean and pearl millet.
12. www.entrepreneurindia.co
Poultry Production has three segments: 1. Layers, 2. Broilers, 3.
Backyard / Family
Layers
Some 70% of the layer birds are being raised in the states of Andhra
Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Maharashtra in south
and Haryana in the north of India.
Broilers
Feed (65%) and chicks (25%) account for 90% of the broiler inputs and
consolidation is being observed in the market. Smaller producers
engage in ‘contract farming’.
Backyard / family production
13. www.entrepreneurindia.co
At one time, 30% of the eggs produced in India were produced in the
backyards. Improved varieties of ‘Low technology input birds’, which
are dual purpose, i.e., producing eggs and meat, are new being bred in
India for the purpose of backyard/family production. The final food
products, i.e., eggs and chicken are not exported in huge quantities as
there is a huge gap in supply and demand within India.
