How Is Lucy Presented In To Kill A Mockingbird
A response to Guilt
John Maxwell Coetzee s novel showed that Lucy s rape was not a gendered crime, instead, was
considered a race and/or class crime. David Lurie and Lucie Lurie represent South Africa s white
minority, that being so, what happened to her represents the punishment to South Africa s white
community (this can be well corroborate in the text), and Lucie s decision to not report the rape and
remain on the farm represents one of the many novel s reposes to guilt.
The farm attack and the rape of Lucy is the most influential scene in the whole book. Everything
was marked up by one specific event. Wyk M. Smith, from Rhodes University, Institute for the
Study of English in Africa, points out that the central sequence of the novel, ... Show more content

Clive Barnett, from University of Reading, Department of Geography, emphasizes that Coetzee s
fiction has been inserted into dominant moral representations of apartheid (300). Where, everything
on this novel can be related to apartheid South Africa. The white professor, and his daughter
represents the disgrace and shame of whites. What happened to them, the attack and Lucy s rape,
represents the punishment to the white community for the crimes they have committed against
the black community. Also, Lucy s reaction to the event was to not press charges against the
rapists, This is my life. I am the one who has to live here. What happened to me is my business,
mine alone, not yours, and if there is one right I have it is the right not to be put on trial (Disgrace
133), and stay in her house and face the consequences. Moreover, Lucy thought that was the price
to pay in order for her to stay there, and J. M. Coetzee quoted in Disgrace:
[S]he broods a long while before she answers. But isn t there another way of looking at it,
David? What if... what if that is the price one has to pay for staying on? Perhaps that is how they

themselves as debt collectors, tax collectors. Why should I be allowed to live here

Essay The Storms of Villette
The Storms of Villette
In Charlotte BrontГ« s novel, Villette, BrontГ« strategically uses the brutality and magnitude of
thunder storms to propel her narrator, Lucy Snowe, into unchartered social territories of friendship
and love. In her most devious act, the fate of Lucy and M. Paul is clouded at the end of the novel
by an ominous and malicious storm. By examining BrontГ« s manipulation of two earlier storms
which echo the scope and foreboding of this last storm the storm Lucy encounters during her
sickness after visiting confession and the storm which detains her at Madame Walravens abode the
reader is provided with a way in which to understand the vague and despairing ending.

Because of this new companionship, Lucy is able to say that she ...had been satisfied with
friendship with its calm comfort and modest hope (304). Without Lucy s time spent at La Terrasse
because of falling victim to the storm, this intimacy may never have been reclaimed and the check
to Lucy s loneliness may never have occurred.
After many months a second tempestuous storm ravages Villette and draws Lucy into another
intimate, yet unexpected bond. Throughout most of the novel, Lucy finds M. Paul to be moody
and unreasonable. She states, even after their friendship appears tighter following the delivery
of her watchguard to him, In a shameless disregard of magnanimity, he resembled the great
Emperor [Napoleon] (436). It is not until PГЁre Silas details M. Paul s history to Lucy that she
can begin to truly understand M Paul s peculiar character. After this explanation, Lucy s view of
M. Paul is transformed. She comments, They showed me how good he was; they made of my
dear little man a stainless little hero...What means had I, before this day, of being certain whether
he could love at all or not? I had known him jealous, suspicious; I had seen about him certain
tendernesses, fitfulnesses... this was all I had seen...And they, PГЁre Silas and Modeste Maria
Beck...opened up the adytum of his heart (491).

The Lone Ranger And Tonto First Fight In Heaven Summary
In the stories that are told in The Lone Ranger and Tonto First fight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie
the author talks about the struggles and battels that Native American s are faced due to how
society has portrayed them to be which in return has in a lot of ways negatively impacted how
they view themselves and struggle with developing a sense of connection with loved ones, their
environment whether that be in school and combining different race and cultures together that
once could never happen back in the early and mid 1900 s, but is still looked down upon in some
families still today. As a native American himself Sherman Alexie really captures the pain that
Native American s feel when they are not looked as any other human being but as a color.... Show

You can t go back to the reservation. You ll die out there. (Sherman Alexie, p.241). This part of
the passage was so powerful because it just showed the frustration that Junior felt that he will
never feel fulfilled in life because he lost Lynn, the white girl he ended up getting pregnant only to
find out she didn t wanted anything long term with him. On top of that, Lynn family was not
accepting that their grandchild had Native American blood line. This caused Junior and Lynn to

make sure Sean their child knows his Native American heritage by reading him books in Junior

Factors That Affect the Academic Performance of the...
By Kirk A. Johnson, Ph.D.
Few would argue that advanced teacher training does not make a difference in student achievement.
In fact, Professor William Sanders of the University of Tennessee argues persuasively that the single
most dominant factor affecting student academic gain is teacher effect. 1 However, little statistical
research is available for evaluating which type of training and teaching degree has the best effect on
student achievement. As the demand for higher academic achievement and accountability in public
education grows, it is important to determine whether teachers who hold advanced degrees in
education as a general field are more effective than those who have degrees in specific subjects like
English or math. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As put forward by Hijaz and Naqvi, there are many ways to weigh up different factors, which can
affect performance of students. It is most likely, that there is no universally accepted method to
measure the performance of students.
Literature Review Performance of a student depends upon many factors. Nevertheless, three factors,
family, teacher, and personal profile of students are most likely critical (Diaz, 2003). Significance of
factors may vary depending upon the context, culture, level of education etc. Family interaction and
Socio
Economic Status (SES) of family can play an important role in the performance of students. As
said by Schulz (2005), The socio economic status of families has been consistently found to be an
important variable in explaining variance in student s achievement (p. 3). Schulz explains that
family can contribute in many ways, for instance; it can provide financial, moral, and other
necessary and useful support to a student. They can provide a stimulating home environment to
promote cognitive development. All the same, the personal attention of a family and its members
is a strong variable. As identified by Hijaz and Naqvi (2006), merely access to better resources
does not provide guarantee for better performance of students and have established a negative
correlation between the income of a family and performance of a student. It may vary from
situation to situation. Nevertheless, it is difficult to refute and defy the role of family in

I Am A United States Army Soldier
I have always wanted to be a United States Army soldier. The purpose of the Army is to preserve
peace and security and providing for the defense of the United States, the commonwealths,
possessions and any areas occupied by the United States. While being apart of this strong,
ambitious and motivated group, I would like to be apart of the communication and networking
field by becoming a radio operator. At the age of eleven years old, I was able to fix my radio that
had been broken with ripped wiring. That s what motivated me and made me interested in
pursuing a career in radio operating. Also, growing up as a young man, I have always enjoyed

Aptitude Battery) This is a multiple choice test broken into sections consisting of mathematics,
general science and arithmetic reasoning. Throughout the testing process, I will have to take
another course dealing with paragraph and mechanical understanding. This course and test will
help me better understand my strengths and identifying which Army jobs are best for me. The
higher I am able to score on the test, means the more job opportunities that are available for me.
When my ASVAB test is complete and I have a ship off date, I will be starting basic training.
After these requirements are met then I will have to complete basic training. Basic Training is a
course that transforms civilians into soldiers. Over the course of ten weeks, this training will
test me mentally and physically. Before basic training, it is important that I get into the process
of getting in shape. Getting in shape before the military is beneficial so that PT (physical
training) will not be as challenging. Lots of running and daily exercise will also help prior to
basic training. Towards the end of training, I will have to pass a PT test which consist of 3
categories. To pass this test I will have to complete 35 push ups, 47 sit ups and a 2 mile run that is

South Africa as a Result of Apartheid in the Film A Dry White Season Brink reaches for that
unexpected potent strand of Afrikaner thought: an almost religious repugnance toward
governmental corruption. And by using a very ordinary Afrikaner as victim, Brink proclaims that
no one in South Africa is any longer safe (Redman 5). Andre Brink s powerful novel, A Dry White
Season, was made into a film directed by Euzhan Palcy about ten years after it was written.
Euzhan Palcy did an excellent job directing her film, which was intended to open the world s eyes
to the injustices being committed in South Africa as a result of the apartheid, and it is successful
in doing so. However, it fails to reach out to the reader, as does Andre... Show more content on

When Gordon s wife, Emily, comes to Ben wanting to have justice be done for what happened to
her husband and son, Ben sends her to a lawyer, and helps her in her quest to uncover the truth.
More and more is revealed as Ben continues his search with the help of Stanley, an energetic
black rebel, and Melanie, a reporter for a British newspaper. However, as Ben probes deeper the
Secret Police turn on him and his personal life fall apart before his eyes. Although the ending is
very different in the novel than in the film, in both Ben is killed by the Secret Police.
Fortunately he has kept record of the information he has uncovered and his story gets told after
all as the reports are passed on and published. The basic story line was preserved in the making of
the film, as are the main ideas. It is the way the film presents the issues to its audience that makes
the difference. Euzhan Palcy left a lot out of the movie partially because some things are
impossible to carry over into a film, such as Ben s internal monologue and the descriptive imagery
present in the novel and partially because she had a different focus and motive in making the film.
As a result of this, she not only omits those things which are unique to a novel, but also omits some
very important characters, important character development, character s actions, and even goes as
far as to insert some actions that were not present in the novel.

Dorothy Parker s Waltz
The Waltz by Dorothy Parker, published in 1933 in the New Yorker, is a short story about a
female protagonist who describes her dance with a man through an internal monologue, interrupted
by her direct speech to her dance partner. The story broaches the issues of the female s social
position towards men and how they are conformed to society s conventions. While her thoughts
reveal in a cynical tone how disgusted and dismissive she feels about the waltzwith the man, her
external speech expresses the wish to continue dancing. This paper will analyze the narrator s
voices and on the one hand, point out her position to her dancepartner. On the other hand, it will
critically view the representation of the dance in reference to her living condition... Show more

(Parker 50) Not only does the protagonist express her feelings towards the man but she also
reveals what the waltz actually stands for in her narration. She feels to be trapped in her
position as a wife and dancing partner. The man she dances with is her putative husband and the
waltz they are dancing is a symbol for their marriage. Scared that this relationship will be going

Interactive Gambling Act Of 2001 (IGA)
In Australia, the Australian government passed the Interactive Gambling Act of 2001 (IGA) [4] to
protect its citizens, from the harmful effects of gambling. This measurement applies offense to
offshore and local remote gambling providers. If an online gambling provider is present in
Australia, the IGA treats it as an offense and legal action is followed. However, for a citizen
present in Australia, it is not an offense to play any online gamblinggames.
Canada treats online gambling in a very different way. Canada has regulations set into place that
allows individuals to participate in online gambling, but only if they are licensed by the provincial
government. [5]

Half of the revenue is generated from those who cannot control their impulses and have a much
higher risk of depression, debt, poverty and crime. So to say that there should be no regulation, by
the virtue of ethics, is unethical. It would be ethical to demonstrate compassion to those who give
into destructive impulses and have regulations on those apps that bring about that behavior. This
does not have to specifically apply to any country or region, because it applies to everyone.
5. CONCLUSION In conclusion, online gambling was once a growing concern from when it came
it fruition. However, due to an increasing number of issues dealing with mental health and crime,
online gambling has been kept in check through legislation. Each country had its own method of
dealing with the issues of online gambling, but have been able to successfully prevent it from
causing problems to increase. Freemium has now entered society with the new age of technology,
and it shares similar psychological consequences to online gambling. Growing concerns on the
ethicacy of how it is being marketed are being questioned, which ultimately leads to the question of
whether it is ethical or not to regulate it.

Data Representation
In computer terms, a bit is a numeric value either a zero or a one that holds a single unit of digital
information. Bits are usually strung together in a sequence eight bits normally equals one byte. Bits
are used to write binary numbers, which can be used to store decimal numbers such as 244 or 93 as
patterns of ones and zeroes.
ASCII or American Standard Code for Information Interchange is a computer code that was
developed to allow computers to convert human text into bits that computers could understand. In
ASCII code, for example, the letter A is 65 a number that can then be converted into the binary
value 1000001.
In the 1960 s, the 7 bit ASCII table was first adopted. Within a 7 bit number, 128 different
characters can be stored English letters from A Z (upper and lower case), numeric digits from 0 9
and special characters such as !/*+. The eighth bit was used to detect transmission errors.

Analysis Of A Christmas Story The Movie
A Christmas Story the Musical The movie A Christmas Story has always been a family favorite
and tradition, so when the opportunity came up to go and see it as a theater production, my mom
and I knew that is exactly what we wanted to see. On December 2nd, my mom and I spent the day
together by getting dinner, going shopping, and ending the night with a play. A ChristmasStory the
Musical was produced by the Morgantown TheatreCompany and directed by Hillary Phillips, both
whom did an outstanding job making sure everything was perfect from beginning to end. When I
was in elementary school every year we would go to a play produced by the same company, so
going back as a sophomore in college brought back fun childhood memories, as did seeing my
childhood favorite Christmas movie on stage. I personally believe that this production was directed,
preformed, and thought out extremely well with an overall experience of excitement, laughter, and
the Christmas spirit! The relationship and energy that the audience had towards the performance
made a large impact on my enjoyment of the play. Since A Christmas Story
is such a popular movie,
hundreds of people came out and packed the theatre! The doors to the theatre did not open until a
half hour before, so there was a large line that wrapped around the building, despite it being cold
people were very upbeat and excited; many families had on matching Christmas sweaters, children
worse their pajamas, and some people when wore Santa

Analyzing The Bystander Effect Of The Kitty Genovese Murder
Kitty Genovese was a woman from New York City who was stabbed to death three separate times
outside her apartment building in Kew Gardens. The first two times being outside her apartment,
and finally finishing her off the assailant returned stabbing her on the floor at the foot of the stairs.
Much controversy arose from the Kitty Genovesemurder, due to how public the murder was, and
how no one stood up for her, or even alerted the police. After Kitty Genovese s murder, questions
began to arise, why didn t anyone take action, how was the assailant able to stab her three times in
public, and why weren t the police or ambulances called sooner? All these questions could be
answered by a syndrome, titled after the Kitty Genovese murder, as the Bystander Effect.... Show

Moreover, these companies have often purported that Media Tek is linked with the production of
counterfeit phone chipsets. This aspect has dealt a blow to the sale and export of the chipsets from
the company. The most amicable strategy that can be utilized by the firm will be based on
convincing the consumers that the chipsets are not counterfeit (Arnold 47). This can only be
executed by ensuring that the chipsets are durable. Strategic issues in the industry: The Company
has been on the path of innovation and invention. This is evidenced by their first colonization of
CD Rom controllers. This made the company acquire 50% of the market share of CD Rom

dynamic. In fact, it has reached a point that human lifestyle is defined by the level of advancements
in technology. The most significant threat lies on the validation of the counterfeit claims. In the
event that such claims are substantiated and validated, Media Tek will lose a significant market
share. The risk and uncertainty in the industry emanates from the verity that wireless chipsets are
manmade. It is common knowledge that man is not perfect. There is bound to be some level of

The Pros And Cons Of Home Schooling
These days one of the biggest stresses resting on a parent s shoulders is finding the right school to
send their children to. What programs do the local public or private schools offer? What is the
demographic and culture of the school? Does their child have a special need that the school can
accommodate? Parents are willing to sell their dream homes to move to another district just to get
the best educationfor their child. However, in many cases parents can easily answer these questions
with one solution, home schooling. Despite much criticism, home schooling is a very flexible and
individualized solution for parents.
Home schooling is an alternative to public schooling where the student is taught at home instead of
in a classroom. Parents have the freedom in most cases to decide what curriculum their children
studies. Many parents choose to home school for religious independence or to protect them from the
public school s lack of programs and funding. It is an option that is legal to anyone in the US with
very few law restriction, in most states, and no educational background necessary from the parents.
If the child is not enrolled in a special home schooling program regulated by the state there is no
funding from the state for home schooled students and in most cases funded by the parents. There
are many resources, programs and groups available to home schooling parents. Home schooling
parents have the option to build a schedule that fits their lifestyle and adds more

WAL MART CEO LEE SCOTTPRIORITIES CEO Lee Scott announced that Wal Mart was
launching a sweeping business sustainability strategy to dramatically reduce the company s
impact on the global environment and thus become the most competitive and innovative company
in the world. He argued that being a good steward of the environment and being profitable are
not mutually exclusive. They are one and the same. Scott also committed Wal Mart to three
aspirational goals: To be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy, to create zero waste, and to
sell products that sustain our resources and the environment. To meet those goals, Wal Mart would
seek to transform its supply chain, in cooperation with suppliers and environmental nonprofit
organizations. In addition, Mr. Scott said that as the largest buyer of manufactured goods in the
world, Wal Mart has the power to encourage its more than 60,000 suppliers to adopt
environmentally conscious business practices. Our most direct impact will be on our suppliers, he
said. If we request that our suppliers use packaging that has less waste or materials that can be
recycled, everybody who buys from that manufacturer will end up using that package. As an
example of how the company can encourage better packaging, Mr. Scott said he would ensure prime

Biologics For Psoriasis Essay
Introduction
Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease in which the growth rate of skin cells is sped up by a faulty
immune system. It is a chronic, and there is no definitive cure for psoriasis. There are many
treatments available to control symptoms, and the newest treatments available are biologic drugs.
Biologics for Psoriasis work by blocking the actions of T cells or inhibiting proteins that cause
psoriasis symptoms to develop. Biologics are a promising treatment for psoriasis. However, there
are still various concerns surrounding their use. Because they are a recent development, no studies
have been conducted to uncover the long term effects of these powerful drugs.

These two proteins play a role in promoting a hyperactive immune system; inhibiting their function
reduces inflammation and leads to an improvement in psoriasis. Stelara is a biologic that targets
interleukin 12 and interleukin 23 to alleviate psoriasis symptoms.
Common side effects from using Stelara include respiratory infections, headaches, and fatigue.
Other more serious risks include life threatening infections, cancer, allergic reactions, and rare brain
diseases that may be fatal.
Worth the Risk?
Biologics are a recent discovery in the field of medicine. There is still much that is unknown
about their long term side effects. A few biologics have already been taken off the market due to
safety concerns while many others have never made it past test stages due to their risks. Raptiva
(efalizumab) was pulled off the market in 2009 due to fatal side effects and central nervous system
disorders.
Although biologics are considered to be some of the promising new psoriasis treatments, they are
not compatible with everyone. They may cause severe effects to some individuals. Due to the
serious risks, they pose, careful consideration must be taken before using them to battle

Sugar: the Sweet Poison
Contemporary Issues in Adolescent Health Wellbeing
WOOLSTON, Kristina
8/26/2014
Sugar is delicious it is a fast source of energy and sometimes cheaper than buying healthy foods. But
Australian teenagers need to wake up to the fact that they are consuming too much of it, the
consequences it is having on their lives.
Introduction
Sugar tastes good, can be used for baking and is a quick source of energy; however what is the
reality of eating sugar? In what way does it affect our bodies and minds to give a short boost of
energy? According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, in Australia, 24.9% of
adolescents between the ages of five and seventeen are overweight or obese
(AustralianInstituteofHealthandWelfare, 2013). As the number of overweight teenagers in
Australia continued to rise, researchers looked for a reason for these overwhelming numbers and
discovered that Australian teenagers were consuming over 53kg of sugar each year, which is
around 29 teaspoons of both natural and added sugar each day (Cowan, 2014).
How is sugar digested?
Sugar is a Carbohydrate and provides a source of energy in the body. It is the only source of energy
for red blood cells and the brain. It is digested quickly and broken down to form glucose and
fructose, which is used for energy (My Food Diary, 2014). Fructose,

Cruise lines accounted for only 5.2% of the $575.2 billion worth of the travel industry in 2014.
While the revenue for cruises has declined in the US, it is growing in Europe and Asia, leading to
more opportunities for Carnival to expand in these regions. Current plans calls to increase berth
capacity for the European market 30% and 20% for the Asian Market by 2016.
Customers in Asia are now looking for luxurious cruises as a vacation option. Disposable
income of the Chinese consumer has grown annually by 10% a year. The total number of
passengers sourced from China had increased steadily in the past few years so the Costa Classica
was launched specifically for this market back in 2010. Carnival is also planning to introduce a
new cruise liner Carnival Vista which will be the largest vessel in the carnival Cruise Lines Fleet by
2016.
Trends have shifted in the cruising industry towards the 45 60 year old age group. As this age
group grows in population, Carnival can take advantage of the economies of scale and offer them
the best prices.

Essay The American with Disabilities Act
As stated by the founding fathers of America All men are created equal. Black, white, brown,
short, tall, smart, and dumb, all are created equally. Therefore every person deserves fair
judgement. Unfortunately, it is a profound fact that not everyone is born normal and capable of
task typical for a common person, who is free from disability. In my opinion, the quote All men are
created equal serves to promote a friendly environment that helps encourage equality among people
and aids to recognize the similarities rather than the differences that separates men. Even so, with
this hope, the disabled community still struggles for equality. According to Legal Rights by the

Sociological Imagination In The Promise By C. Wright Mills
The term sociological imagination is the ability to recognize that as individuals we are also apart
of the large society. it also helps us to see situations socially and ways they inter and influence
each other. In the The Promise , C. Wright Mills defines sociological imagination as a individual s
ability to recognize the influence of their society of key historical happening on their own life
struggle . He conveys that an individual cannot strive if she/she doesn t recognize the history
occurring in the world them. Specifically, Mills suggests that, the sociological imaginationenables
its possessor to understand the larger historical sense in terms of its meaning for the inner life and
the external career of a variety of individuals (Mills,1959,p. 2). Ultimately what this indicates is
that in order for a individual to see the impact he/she has on the world and the impact the world has

Beyond these factors, there is evidence of a pathophysiological role for inflammation and
oxidative stress in CKD and its complications [2]. These two events are prominent features of
CKD and its complications in humans [3,4,5,6,7]. Increased oxygen radical formation was
found in CKD, in the presence of a reduced antioxidant defense [8]. Patients suffer from chronic
microinflammation and infections [9]. Gum Arabic (GA) is derived from exudates of Acacia
senegal or Acacia seyal trees. It consists of a mixture of polysaccharides (major component) plus
oligosaccharides and glycoproteins [1,2]; however, its composition can vary with its source,
climate and soil. Sudan is the world s largest producer, followed by many other African countries.
It readily dissolves in water to form solutions characterized by low viscosity. This allows its use
in various applications [3]. Gum Arabic was evaluated for acceptable daily intake for man by the
Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives since 1969 [5]; however, Sudanese people
in Western Sudan had been using it for long time without limitations. It is indigestible to both
humans and animals, not degraded in the intestine, but fermented in the colon to give short chain
fatty acids, leading to a large range of possible health benefits [6]. One of these benefits is its
prebiotic effect [7,8]. It has been claimed that four week supplementation with Gum

The Biblical and Historical Origins of the Problems in the Middle East
The present day situation in Israel may be the most difficult political situation in world history. It
dates back to thousands of years before Christ, and deals with a large number of issues including
political, religious, and cultural issues. In order to understand the current day issues, we must first
understand the Biblical and historical issues. In this paper, I will first explore what the later books
of the old testament, specifically the books of Ezra, Nehemiah, Zechariah, and Malachi, and than
talk about the modern day issues. This was an interesting part of the Bible to research, because it is

The first book that I will discuss is the book of Ezra. Ezra lived during the time several hundred
years after the return of the Jews from the Babylonian exile, which would be around 400 BC.
Ezra was a priest, who was an expert in the law of the Torah. The first six chapters of the Book of
Ezra describe the return of the Jews from the exile in Babylon, which actually happened before
Ezra was actually living. The last 6 chapters deal with the restoration of Jewish life in Israel after
the exile in Babylon.
In this time period, there were two restorations going on. The first dealt with the rebuilding of
the city of Jerusalem, even though the Temple had already been built after the return from exile.
The second dealt with the rebuilding of Jewish religious life in the postexilic period. Because he
was a priest and an expert in the law, Ezra was primarily responsible for the religious rebuilding.
A major problem of the time was that Jewish men were taking foreign wives, and at this time, Ezra
prohibited mixed marriages. The men who had married foreign women had to abandon them. There
was also a covenant renewal at this time.
The second book that I will discuss is the book of Nehemiah. It isn t known who came first of
Ezra and Nehemiah, but while Ezra was the religious leader, Nehemiah was the political leader.
Nehemiah began his work in Babylon around 445 BC,

Cates, S., Machin, L. (2012). The State of Sexual Harassment in America: What is the Status of
Sexual Harassment in the US Workplace Today? Journal of Global Business Management, 8(1),

Unwanted sexual advances are inappropriate whether or not an individual is at work. This article
speaks to the minds of people who have been sexually harassed at work in the 2000s. When written,
the article explained that in the last two years sexual harassment in the workplace had actually
increased. It also explains the difference between a minor incident that may involve an
inappropriate comment and many inappropriate comments that may begin affecting workmanship.
Previous articles have stated most of the time sexual harassment is based upon leadership and
masculinity, but Cates and Machin state there is no reason behind it. According to the article, there
are many types of sexual harassment: verbal/written, physical, nonverbal (inappropriate staring),
severe/pervasive (attempted rape). These are split, according to the EEOC (Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission) into two factions, quid pro quo and hostile. The consequences of these
actions need to be enforced by not only termination, but possible convictions, as well.

12 Minor Prophets Of The Old Testament
One of the 12 minor prophets of the Old Testament, Haggai, played an essential role in the
rebuilding of the temple of the Lord. Although we are not given the specific details about when
it is written or who wrote the book of Haggai, it is often assumed that Haggai himself wrote it.
Scholars also presume that it was written around 520 B.C. due to the specifics of the time period
given in the book itself. It is a rather short book, only consisting of two chapters, and exact dates
are given as to when the Lord spoke to Haggai regarding the rebuilding of the temple. For
example, Haggai opens up by saying that the Lord first spoke to Haggai on the first day of the
sixth month of the rule of Darius. The messages from the Lord to Haggai were directed to the
governor, Zerubbabel, the high priest, Joshua,a and sometimes to all the people of Judah. These
messages usually focus on the apathy of the people to rebuild the temple of the Lord.
The people of God during The Book of Haggai are avoiding rebuilding the temple in Jerusalem. The
first temple was built by Solomon, the son of David. David initially wanted to build the temple,
but God gave the task to Solomon. The Babylonians led by Nebuchadnezzar marched into
Jerusalem and destroyed this first temple of God. The temple was to be rebuilt, but it was being
avoided largely during the time of Haggai. Consequently, God spoke to Haggai and had him relay
messages to his people. God started by asking the people how they live in their

The main characteristic to classify crystal or glass is the content of lend in the glass. Lead that
in crystal make its more easily cut and engraved are the presence of the lead soften the glass in

glass. For the glass stemware has the lighter weight than crystal glass and light will not diffract
though the glass. Besides, lead has tendency to filter out the crystal from the lead glassware.
Nowadays, crystal glass is unleaded because its use barium carbonate and zinc and titanium
oxides to displace the lead oxide. Those glasses are similar properties as lead crystal such as
temperature control. Unleaded glass has lighter weight but its has the similar characteristic of
refractive index with lead crystal. The highest quality crystal glass can provide a better wine

Corridors of Migration, is about the odyssey of Mexican laborers during the period of 19600

the factors that influenced Mexicans to migrate to the United States as well as the factors that
pushed Mexicans out of the U.S. labor strikes and the corridors taken by Mexicans and their

occurred due to the cause and effect of reactions of social and economic issues such as the Mexican
Revolution of 1910, World World I, and mines as well as commercial agriculture. Moreover, the
book illustrates strikes from the earliest in Arizona to the 1933 San Joaquin Valley Cotton Strike. In

alienated because they aren t accepted for their differences. Horton Foote, the screenwriter, did an

How Did The Enlightenment Influence The American Thinkers

did more to change the world because their ideas and beliefs had given countries the inspiration to

was a highly influential political thinker during the Age of Enlightenment. Montesquieu was born
on January 18, 1689 in the Aquitaine region of France. Through his masterworks, education, and

best government power during his time. They made the laws, carried out the laws of the state,
and members of the parliament held legislative power. Their power of government was divided
into three branches Montesquieu called this the separation of powers. After he wrote one of his
major works, On the Spirit of Laws (1748), it went on to influence American and English
government. In this book, he talks about how the separation of powers would keep any individual

Analytic Thinking, Religion, and Prejudice
The relation between and the intersection of religion and analytic thinking are complex and
intransigently debated topic in the both social psychology and cognitive science literature for a
decade. Moreover, the idea that religions facilitate acts that cause the negative attitudes toward
especially religious out groups has relatively a long theoretical and empirical history in social
psychology(Allport Ross, 1967; Altemeyer Hunsberger, 1992; Spilka, 1986; Whitley Bernard,1999)
and is the main idea behind the evolutionary origins of religion(Atran Heinrich, 2010; Bering,
2011; Norenzayan Shariff, 2008; Preston Ritter, 2013; Rand et al., 2014; Shariff Norenzayan,

In all experiments, those who primed with analytic thinking expressed less belief in a personal God:
an average of about 41 on a 100 point scale for experimental group as compared to an average of
61 for control group. Although this finding is robust in different demographic variations, little is
known about its applicability to different religions which have Big Gods . (The term Big Gods
refer to omnipresent and omniscient moralizing agent (Shariff Norenzayan, 2007) and this is
unique to the three big religions: Christianity, Judaism and Islam). Moreover, although they noted
that the manipulations did merely a dip in religious beliefs of participants instead of an extreme
change, it is unclear whether analytic thinking can decrease religious beliefs of highly religious

ABSTRACT
Deflections of a beam are important to be able predict the amount of deflection for a given loading
situation. This experiment addresses determining the yield point for a material to fail, so the stress
in the material does not have to reach to that point. This is where understanding beam deflection
becomes a useful tool. This experiment is using beam deflection theory to evaluate and compare
observed deflection per load values to theoretical values. Beam deflection experiment done by four
parts. Part 1 Simple Supported Bean, part ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Bad News Communication
If my boss decided that I would be just the person to handle this project, I would approach the
news channels and newspaper differently. First of all, I wouldn t give out statements if I m not a
hundred percent sure because any false statement I can lose my career. Second of all, there should
only be one news reporterto reports news of information on television to receive accurate
information and not guessing on information being bought out from other reporter. I feel like
reporters back in the days feels they need to impress their employer to get promoted, so
information is being overheard and is not a hundred percent true but rumors. Third, if I m assigned
to this job I would be at the scene and see it for myself to confirm that the information I attain are
true facts or ask the officers that are in charge of the situation. I would double check the information
to make sure they are correct or wait until everybody is reveal to confirm true facts because false
information will emotionally and physically effects on the people have passed away. I personally
think that these reporters wanted to get a good promotion and got out the information too fast
which turn out so bad that it turns out false information lead by the reporters. I think these reporter
shouldn t have reports the information when there not one hundred percent sure that the
information is true. Plus they were doubting the information were true and hoping that it was true

Classifying Ancient Asia
Asian archaeology has distinct variety of hominid and hominoid from the Pleistocene, unusual
subsistence adaptations from the Holocene, and simple complex polities. Carl Sauer, an American
geographer, was one of the first scholars to note Asia as a source for the genesis of agriculture:
some of the earliest domesticated plants were found in Asia. The earliest pottery also appeared
more than 12,000 years ago Jomon huntergatherers in Japan . Yet Asia s uniqueness does not make
it incomparable to developments elsewhere in the Old and New Worlds; understanding Asia s
ancient histories is important for the elaboration of developments across the Eurasian continent.
Most Koreans (both Northerners and Southerners) believe that their people came from a first
ancestor, Tangun, who was brought to the world by a female bear and Hwantung, the son of
heaven; and the recent discovery of the eighty six bone fragments in that date to 5001 B.P. in
Pyongyang (alleged to be those of Tan gun and his queen) united and strengthened the Koreans
belief of their ethnogenesis. British and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A civilization should have cities considering their dense population. Complex religions, usually
polytheistic, is another characteristic of a civilization since religious leaders would perform
ritualistic sacrifices for the gods to insure productive harvests and the like; with these religions

central governments were needed for overseeing the maintenance of order in places. Job

Poland s Role Of The State Of Poland
The Republic of Poland, commonly referred to simply as Poland, is a unitary state that operates
with a parliamentary republic government. In addition, Poland has also been a member of the
European Parliament since 2004 in which it is the sixth largest member state with a population of
over 38.53 million as of 2013. The politics of Polandcan arguably be viewed as complex to an
outsider, such as one from the United Statesof America. Unlike the United States, Poland does not
use a two party system in elections and it also operates under a semi presidential system meaning
the country has both a president and prime minister. Poland operates with a semi presidential

Duda is an independent politician meaning he does not particularly align with any political party.
Contrarily, SzydЕ‚o is a member of the political party known as the Law and Justice party. The

governed. Poland operates under a multi party system in which various political parties compete
against one another in elections. This system contrasts from the United States in that the United
States operates within a two party system in which elections are between only two major political
parties. Poland currently has 15 political parties that hold seats in either the Sejm, Senate or the
European Parliament. These parties include Law and Justice, Civic Platform, Modern, Polish
People s Party, Union of European Democrats, Union of European Democrats, Democratic Left
Alliance, Solidary Poland, Poland Together, Liberty, Congress of the New Right, Right Wing of the

they accumulate the most seats by a plurality in the Sejm, Senate and European Parliament. Due to
their pluralities in these institutions, members of these two parties have a large impact and

The Lack Of A Central Holocaust Memorial
ecrying the lack of a central Holocaust memorial in Germany, a group of German citizens begins
a decade long campaign for a highly visible, national Memorial to Europe s Murdered Jews. The
idea for the memorial is first proposed by journalist Lea Rosh and historian Eberhard Jaeckel who
together had made a documentary about the deportation and mass murder of Europe s Jews
between 1933 and 1945.
November 1992
Key decisions
The German government decides that the memorial should be devoted only to Jewish victims of
the Holocaust and designates a prominent location in the center of the newly unified city of Berlin:
The five acre site will lie due south of the Brandenburg Gate, which until 1989 had divided East and
West Berlin. The site is also just a few steps from the buried remains of the bunker where Adolf
Hitler committed suicide. Amidst the Berlin s tremendous construction boom (which garnered it
the nickname Europe s Hong Kong ), the monument is but one of many construction projects that
anticipate the relocation of the German federal government from Bonn to Berlin by the year 2001
the same year that the monument is scheduled to be unveiled.
November 1993
Another memorial is dedicated
Germany dedicates one of its central monuments, the Neue Wache, or New Guard House, to the
victims of war and tyranny. Inside is a classical statue of a woman cradling her grown, slain son, an
enlargement of one of German Chancellor Helmut Kohl s favorite works. Critics

The Color In The Great Gatsby
YELLOW Wilson s Garage: The color yellow is considered to be the unauthentic version of
gold. As previously stated, gold is a color of richness and value which is why we it is clearly
visible in the Gatsby household. Yellow on the other hand, is quite inferior when compared to the
standards of gold. In contrast to Jordan, the golden girl, her admirers are merely, two girls in twin
yellowdresses. (Fitzgerald.47) They are so unimportant that they aren t even called by their names.
They are simply labeled as, one of the girls in yellow, (Fitzgerald.47) even though one, [plays] the

While many would connect the color grey with George, the irrelevant individual who never lived
up to the standards of the wealthy, we can also make this connection with Gatsby, who happens
to be one of the wealthiest. Even Gatsby had, foul dust [floating] in the wake of his dreams,
(Fitzgerald.4) revealing that although he might seem content on the outside, he is melancholy
and gloomy on the inside. Nevertheless, George Wilson can be best identified as grey, boring
and insignificant. When Nick first encounters George, a white ashen dust veiled his dark suit
and his pale hair as it veiled everything in the vicinity, (Fitzgerald.29) showing just how distressed
George truly was. He was surrounded by wealthy people living in the luscious lands of West and
East Egg, yet he was stuck in the middle, in a wasteland covered in ash and soot known as The
Valley of Ashes. The Valley of Ashes represents the forgotten, the, men who move dimly and
[are] already crumbling through the powdery air. (Fitzgerald.26) Every single piece of grey, the

upon those who passed The Valley of Ashes. The Valley stands for pain and destruction as it was

Rising College Tuition in America
Rising College Tuition in America College Prices Soar Again! Budget Cuts Cause Even Higher
Tuition! Higher Education Now Even Less Affordable These are all statements that have been
seen all over the media: newspapers, magazines, television, and radio. (3 SV: SV) Rising college
tuition in America has been a problem for years. Many students drop out after a single year due
to the pricey costs of tuition. The rapid rise can be attributed to many aspects of the economy, not
just a single source. There have also been some propositions of how costs could be lowered, but
these have yet to be seen. The United States has gone into a tuition crisis. Tuition rates have been
on the rise since the start of colleges. In 1988, the average college tuitionwas about $2,800 for a
year of schooling. In 2008, that number had risen 130% to nearly $6,800 for one year; according
to Annalyn Censky of CNN Money, if the average income had raised the same amount, median
family earning would be roughly $77,000 a year, instead of the current $33,000. Americans are
making $400 less on average than they did in 1988 says Censky. Over the past twenty years, college
has risen 5% of the median family income from 12% to 17%; private colleges went from 27% to
47% says Economist.com. (1 SV; SV.) Tuition isn t the only thing rising at colleges: room, meals,
books, and other fees are rising as well. (4 SV: A,B,C,D.) This also takes its toll on families as well
as the students themselves. Many students

  • 2. How Is Lucy Presented In To Kill A Mockingbird A response to Guilt John Maxwell Coetzee s novel showed that Lucy s rape was not a gendered crime, instead, was considered a race and/or class crime. David Lurie and Lucie Lurie represent South Africa s white minority, that being so, what happened to her represents the punishment to South Africa s white community (this can be well corroborate in the text), and Lucie s decision to not report the rape and remain on the farm represents one of the many novel s reposes to guilt. The farm attack and the rape of Lucy is the most influential scene in the whole book. Everything was marked up by one specific event. Wyk M. Smith, from Rhodes University, Institute for the Study of English in Africa, points out that the central sequence of the novel, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Clive Barnett, from University of Reading, Department of Geography, emphasizes that Coetzee s fiction has been inserted into dominant moral representations of apartheid (300). What happened to them, the attack and Lucy s rape, represents the punishment to the white community for the crimes they have committed against the black community. Also, Lucy s reaction to the event was to not press charges against the rapists, This is my life. I am the one who has to live here. What happened to me is my business, mine alone, not yours, and if there is one right I have it is the right not to be put on trial (Disgrace 133), and stay in her house and face the consequences. Moreover, Lucy thought that was the price to pay in order for her to stay there, and J. M. Coetzee quoted in Disgrace: [S]he broods a long while before she answers. But isn t there another way of looking at it, David? What if... what if that is the price one has to pay for staying on? • 3. Essay The Storms of Villette The Storms of Villette In Charlotte BrontГ« s novel, Villette, BrontГ« strategically uses the brutality and magnitude of thunder storms to propel her narrator, Lucy Snowe, into unchartered social territories of friendship and love. In her most devious act, the fate of Lucy and M. Paul is clouded at the end of the novel by an ominous and malicious storm. By examining BrontГ« s manipulation of two earlier storms which echo the scope and foreboding of this last storm the storm Lucy encounters during her sickness after visiting confession and the storm which detains her at Madame Walravens abode the reader is provided with a way in which to understand the vague and despairing ending. Without Lucy s time spent at La Terrasse because of falling victim to the storm, this intimacy may never have been reclaimed and the check to Lucy s loneliness may never have occurred. After many months a second tempestuous storm ravages Villette and draws Lucy into another intimate, yet unexpected bond. Throughout most of the novel, Lucy finds M. Paul to be moody and unreasonable. She states, even after their friendship appears tighter following the delivery of her watchguard to him, In a shameless disregard of magnanimity, he resembled the great Emperor [Napoleon] (436). It is not until PГЁre Silas details M. Paul s history to Lucy that she can begin to truly understand M Paul s peculiar character. After this explanation, Lucy s view of M. Paul is transformed. She comments, They showed me how good he was; they made of my dear little man a stainless little hero...What means had I, before this day, of being certain whether he could love at all or not? I had known him jealous, suspicious; I had seen about him certain tendernesses, fitfulnesses... this was all I had seen...And they, PГЁre Silas and Modeste Maria Beck...opened up the adytum of his heart (491). • 4. The Lone Ranger And Tonto First Fight In Heaven Summary In the stories that are told in The Lone Ranger and Tonto First fight in Heaven by Sherman Alexie the author talks about the struggles and battels that Native American s are faced due to how society has portrayed them to be which in return has in a lot of ways negatively impacted how they view themselves and struggle with developing a sense of connection with loved ones, their environment whether that be in school and combining different race and cultures together that once could never happen back in the early and mid 1900 s, but is still looked down upon in some families still today. You can t go back to the reservation. You ll die out there. (Sherman Alexie, p.241). This part of the passage was so powerful because it just showed the frustration that Junior felt that he will never feel fulfilled in life because he lost Lynn, the white girl he ended up getting pregnant only to find out she didn t wanted anything long term with him. On top of that, Lynn family was not accepting that their grandchild had Native American blood line. This caused Junior and Lynn to distance themselves. • 5. Factors That Affect the Academic Performance of the... By Kirk A. Johnson, Ph.D. Few would argue that advanced teacher training does not make a difference in student achievement. In fact, Professor William Sanders of the University of Tennessee argues persuasively that the single most dominant factor affecting student academic gain is teacher effect. 1 However, little statistical research is available for evaluating which type of training and teaching degree has the best effect on student achievement. As the demand for higher academic achievement and accountability in public education grows, it is important to determine whether teachers who hold advanced degrees in education as a general field are more effective than those who have degrees in specific subjects like English or math. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As put forward by Hijaz and Naqvi, there are many ways to weigh up different factors, which can affect performance of students. It is most likely, that there is no universally accepted method to measure the performance of students. Literature Review Performance of a student depends upon many factors. Nevertheless, three factors, family, teacher, and personal profile of students are most likely critical (Diaz, 2003). Significance of factors may vary depending upon the context, culture, level of education etc. Family interaction and Socio Economic Status (SES) of family can play an important role in the performance of students. As said by Schulz (2005), The socio economic status of families has been consistently found to be an important variable in explaining variance in student s achievement (p. 3). Schulz explains that family can contribute in many ways, for instance; it can provide financial, moral, and other necessary and useful support to a student. They can provide a stimulating home environment to promote cognitive development. All the same, the personal attention of a family and its members is a strong variable. As identified by Hijaz and Naqvi (2006), merely access to better resources does not provide guarantee for better performance of students and have established a negative correlation between the income of a family and performance of a student. South Africa as a Result of Apartheid in the Film A Dry White Season Brink reaches for that unexpected potent strand of Afrikaner thought: an almost religious repugnance toward governmental corruption. And by using a very ordinary Afrikaner as victim, Brink proclaims that no one in South Africa is any longer safe (Redman 5). Andre Brink s powerful novel, A Dry White Season, was made into a film directed by Euzhan Palcy about ten years after it was written. Euzhan Palcy did an excellent job directing her film, which was intended to open the world s eyes to the injustices being committed in South Africa as a result of the apartheid, and it is successful in doing so. However, as Ben probes deeper the Secret Police turn on him and his personal life fall apart before his eyes. Although the ending is very different in the novel than in the film, in both Ben is killed by the Secret Police. Fortunately he has kept record of the information he has uncovered and his story gets told after all as the reports are passed on and published. The basic story line was preserved in the making of the film, as are the main ideas. It is the way the film presents the issues to its audience that makes the difference. Euzhan Palcy left a lot out of the movie partially because some things are impossible to carry over into a film, such as Ben s internal monologue and the descriptive imagery present in the novel and partially because she had a different focus and motive in making the film. As a result of this, she not only omits those things which are unique to a novel, but also omits some very important characters, important character development, character s actions, and even goes as far as to insert some actions that were not present in the novel. ... Interactive Gambling Act Of 2001 (IGA) In Australia, the Australian government passed the Interactive Gambling Act of 2001 (IGA) [4] to protect its citizens, from the harmful effects of gambling. This measurement applies offense to offshore and local remote gambling providers. If an online gambling provider is present in Australia, the IGA treats it as an offense and legal action is followed. However, for a citizen present in Australia, it is not an offense to play any online gamblinggames. Canada treats online gambling in a very different way. This does not have to specifically apply to any country or region, because it applies to everyone. 5. • 11. Analysis Of A Christmas Story The Movie A Christmas Story the Musical The movie A Christmas Story has always been a family favorite and tradition, so when the opportunity came up to go and see it as a theater production, my mom and I knew that is exactly what we wanted to see. On December 2nd, my mom and I spent the day together by getting dinner, going shopping, and ending the night with a play. A ChristmasStory the Musical was produced by the Morgantown TheatreCompany and directed by Hillary Phillips, both whom did an outstanding job making sure everything was perfect from beginning to end. When I was in elementary school every year we would go to a play produced by the same company, so going back as a sophomore in college brought back fun childhood memories, as did seeing my childhood favorite Christmas movie on stage. I personally believe that this production was directed, preformed, and thought out extremely well with an overall experience of excitement, laughter, and the Christmas spirit! The relationship and energy that the audience had towards the performance made a large impact on my enjoyment of the play. Since A Christmas Story is such a popular movie, hundreds of people came out and packed the theatre! The doors to the theatre did not open until a half hour before, so there was a large line that wrapped around the building, despite it being cold people were very upbeat and excited; many families had on matching Christmas sweaters, children worse their pajamas, and some people when wore Santa ... Although we are not given the specific details about when it is written or who wrote the book of Haggai, it is often assumed that Haggai himself wrote it. Scholars also presume that it was written around 520 B.C. due to the specifics of the time period given in the book itself. It is a rather short book, only consisting of two chapters, and exact dates are given as to when the Lord spoke to Haggai regarding the rebuilding of the temple. For example, Haggai opens up by saying that the Lord first spoke to Haggai on the first day of the sixth month of the rule of Darius. The messages from the Lord to Haggai were directed to the governor, Zerubbabel, the high priest, Joshua,a and sometimes to all the people of Judah. The first temple was built by Solomon, the son of David. David initially wanted to build the temple, but God gave the task to Solomon. The Babylonians led by Nebuchadnezzar marched into Jerusalem and destroyed this first temple of God. The temple was to be rebuilt, but it was being avoided largely during the time of Haggai. Montesquieu was born on January 18, 1689 in the Aquitaine region of France. Through his masterworks, education, and travels, he gained much respect from his fellow philosophers ( Charles Louis de Secondat Biography ). Montesquieu believed that the country of Britain had the most well balanced and best government power during his time. They made the laws, carried out the laws of the state, and members of the parliament held legislative power. Their power of government was divided into three branches Montesquieu called this the separation of powers. After he wrote one of his major works, On the Spirit of Laws (1748), it went on to influence American and English government.
